Step One: IMAGINE Step Two: DO You’re future has never felt closer. You’ve got big plans. Right? Maybe you’ll create the next big thing. Rewrite history. Develop new industries. Or upend the status quo. But where to start? Here’s an idea. Start here . . . at the University of Utah. Success requires two things: figuring out what you want to accomplish and then digging in and making it happen. With the right tools, experience, and dedication, anything is possible. Great institutions are defined by their ability to imagine what might be, and the resources they dedicate to making that happen. They’re places where innovation and creativity live, research and artistry aren’t polar opposites, and every student has the opportunity to define themselves and set their stage for future success.
Whatever you’re seeking...a job, a career, a calling...opportunity awaits and all things are possible at a place we call Imagine U.

IMAGINE
A pristine desert valley surrounded by towering mountains and a shimmering lake to the west. Up until the first settlers arrived in the mid-1800s what came to be known as the Salt Lake valley was untouched, save for the Ute Indian tribes that called the region home and the occasional trappers and explorers that journeyed through. After arriving, those settlers took that blank canvas and set about building Salt Lake City from the ground up using their imagination, dedication, and rugged individualism. Their hard work and vision turned the desert valley into a lush and vibrant community. Once established, their first priority was to create one of the oldest universities west of the Mississippi river—the University of Utah. Now over 150 years later, the U (as it’s often called) embodies that same spirit of imagination, discovery, and dedication. It’s practically in our DNA. And as a new member of the Pac-12, there’s a momentum and excitement at the University of Utah you can feel. It’s in our academic programs, student resources and support, cutting-edge research, and rising along with the new facilities and programs that are transforming our campus today.

From small beginnings, Salt Lake has grown into an impressively cosmopolitan and diverse place to live. Over 1 million residents live in the valley and enjoy the vibrant culture and downtown city center, distinctive neighborhoods, and a reasonable cost of living. With the Farmers Market, festivals and concerts, bustling restaurants, active social scene, and thriving arts community, the city offers something for everyone.

Utah With mountains, lakes, deserts, and national parks to explore, Utah’s yearround recreational opportunities are world-renowned. When class is out, so are our students—out skiing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, kayaking, snowshoeing, golfing, you name it. We have seven ski resorts within 30 minutes of campus! There are also five national parks within a five-hour drive, perfect for weekend road trips. And you can rent bikes, tents, rafts, sleeping bags, and just about any other outdoor recreation gear you need at Campus Recreation for cheap. If you’re interested in sticking around after graduation, you should know about the high-tech business corridor that is quickly expanding in the northern Utah area. In fact, Forbes magazine recently ranked Salt Lake City No. 2 in the nation for college graduates to find work.

Campus Life There’s so many ways to get involved, meet new friends, and explore all the things the U offers when you’re not in class. Join 6,000 of your classmates at Crimson Nights—one of the countries largest campus parties, discover student groups and programs at PlazaFest, or explore the beauty of Red Butte Gardens & Arboretum. With museums, concert venues, theaters, student programs, and exciting Pac-12 athletics and game day events, you’ll want to join in the fun as soon as you get here.
Student Involvement ASUU stands for Associated Students of the University of Utah, and as a registered student, you’re automatically a member. Getting involved with ASUU will make college life engaging and more enjoyable. Throughout the year ASUU hosts free concerts, food, movies, dances, and parties for students. With over 500 student groups on campus you’re sure to find something that interests you. From the traditions of the Greek system to groups focused on academics, service, and social clubs, we encourage all of our students—undergrad and graduate— to get involved. To make it easy to search, join, or create a club, visit ASUU’s site at asuu.utah.edu and search the “Community” section.
Living on Campus Located in and around historic Fort Douglas on the east side of campus, our modern apartmentstyle residence halls were built to house the athletes for the 2002 Winter Olympic games. The beautiful grounds have a small “liberal arts college” feel with close proximity to classes, easy access to mass transit (campus shuttles, UTA buses and TRAX trains), and hiking and biking trails literally right outside your door.

The U Student Experience At the U we know that your education is based on more than just the classes you take or the grades you receive. Our programs and curriculum are designed to be hands-on, engaging, and collaborative to allow you to discover more about yourself and the world around you. We’ve made student success a key component of the Utah undergraduate experience because we see it in action every day and know that it will help open you to limitless possibilities. Through seamless navigation of subjects and coursework, tailored programs and educational tracks, and a respect for diversity and ideas, the U offers many choices and opportunities that will shape you personally and prepare you for your future career. Imagine being involved in undergraduate-level research at one of the top research universities in the country. With UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program), you can join faculty and other students to work together on research initiatives.
UNIVERSIT Y OF UTAH
Or join our Learning, Engagement, Achievement, Progress (LEAP) or BlockU programs, where in your first year at the U you’ll earn credits and work as part of small classes of students and helpful advisors. These great programs help you focus on subjects like service, leadership, and education while also spending time in social activities outside of class. Do you remember those moments when a teacher or mentor had a great impact on your life and intellectual growth? You can be part of the MUSE Project (My Utah Signature Experience) where students connect with faculty, mentors, and community leaders to make those signature experiences happen on a daily basis. As part of the MUSE network, MURE (My Utah Research Experience) actually allows you to create you own research experience, taking your idea or theory and developing it with the help of professors and mentors. A well-rounded education benefits from viewing life through different perspectives—so we encourage all of our students to experience learning outside the classroom. Perhaps a semester or more studying abroad and immersing yourself in other cultures and viewpoints. Or stay close to campus and get involved in the many community service and learning projects we offer and benefit from helping others by making a difference in their lives— and yours. We’ve designed the Utah undergraduate experience to help you graduate with the tools, knowledge, and skills critical to making you a success both during your time at the U and in your career. With so many choices and opportunities from which to choose, we know you’ll receive a deeper and more meaningful educational experience that will prepare you for wherever life takes you.

Global Engagement What is it like attending one of the top 100 ranked universities in the world? It means having the resources and connections to recruit top faculty to campus while also branching out into the community, state, and world to offer unique learning experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Learn about building environmentally conscious and sustainable dwellings at Rio Mesa, a plot of red rock desert donated to the U near Moab and Arches National Park. Benefit from U partnerships with Salt Lake arts programs like Ballet West or local business incubators. Or learn to excavate and catalog recently revealed ancient Indian dwellings at Range Creek, under the Natural History Museum of Utah’s conservatorship of land recently given to the U in central Utah. For a truly international experience, the Center for Learning Abroad offers hundreds of opportunities to spend a semester or more studying and immersing yourself in the culture and customs of cities across the globe. These exciting and challenging times are some of the most rewarding experiences you can have during your academic career. And with new opportunities to study in , Korea at the U’s soon-to-open satellite Asian campus at Songdo, we’re getting closer to our mission of serving not just the people of Utah but the world.

Deferring Your Admission to a Later Term We know that school sometimes takes a temporary back seat to other things in life, and there may be a need for newly accepted freshman, transfer, or readmitted undergraduate students to defer their start date to a later semester. The University of Utah allows students to apply for an admission deferment once they’ve been admitted. Deferment requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may be granted for reasons that include, but are not limited to, illness, military service, and humanitarian or religious service. Supporting documentation must be provided with the application for deferment, and admission can be deferred up to a maximum of seven consecutive semesters (including summers). For more details and information about deadlines and other requirements, visit the deferment policy website at admissions.utah.edu/deferment
