Collaborated with Lizy Heard, the graphic designer, and the editor, Stacy Smith when creating the magazine. New attempt at a style inspired by printmaking and contemporary illustration.
After attending the Creative Works Conference in downtown Memphis, this piece was created and became a turning point. It’s reminiscent of Terrance Osborne, a popular New Orleans artist.

In order to make good, quality art, you must find something in your work that you can put your heart into. Because I’m personally attached to this topic, it was easy to produce a cohesive body of work.
Technique- I would select an area with the polygonal lasso tool, swipe the area with a textured brush, deselect, then move on to the next shape, allowing a smidge of irregular space between each shape. Each shape appears as though they could be pieced together like a puzzle.

I attached a pencil to the end of a yardstick, found the center, and swung the pencil around to make a perfect circle. Then masked the circle and wedges with tape.
For the text and icons, I printed them out, rubbed graphite on the back of each sheet of paper, placed the paper against the mural where I wanted them (graphite-side down), then traced over the text/icon with a pencil. This is called a graphite transfer.

Final Illustrations
This map was created, using Adobe Illustrator, for the Scholar Handbook. It’s meant to be fun and gives Scholars an idea of where different areas of Memphis are. The map is not to scale.
