FAMILY ORIENTATION GUIDEBOOK
Why Join Scouting As a parent, you want your son to grow up to be a self-reliant, dependable and caring person. Scouting has these same goals in mind for boys. Scouting teaches first aid, swimming, outdoor skills, hiking, camping, and many other skills—life skills they will take with them into adulthood. These hands-on learning activities help boys realize their own potential for learning and mastering new skills, that builds the resiliency and confidence to handle challenges that cross his path. Scouting builds young men who are competent to handle the tough questions. While every skill Scouting teaches is important, the self-confidence, fun and sense of accomplishment boys get from skill-building activities are key. Each Scouting activity has the basic goal of building character. In Scouting for today and tomorrow, character counts.
SCOUT LAW A Scout is, Trustworthy, Loyal Helpful, Friendly Courteous, Kind Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent

Notes
According to the C.A.M.P. Study at Tufts University, Cub Scouts have been shown to have increased "cheerfulness, hopeful future expectations, helpfulness, kindness, and intentional self-regulation." And youth that stayed in the cub scout program for as little as two years showed a marked difference in prosocial behavior. Researchers asked, what's most important, their peers would more likely to say "winning", "being smart", playing sports." Cub Scouts would say "Helping others" or "Do the right thing". What would you want your son to say is most import? (Please Choose Below) ____ ____ ____ ____
WINNING. PLAYING SPORTS. BEING SMART. OR... DOING THE RIGHT THING!

How Do I Sign Up My Son for Scouting Step 1: Organize Dens
Your pack will create dens by forming groups of boys by grade

It helps to group boys by neighborhoods and/or friendships
Encourage your son to bring his friends along. He will have the opportunity to share and experience the excitement with his buddies.
What Do Cub Scouts Do? Some of the best things about Cub Scouting are the activities you get to do: camping, hiking, racing model cars, going on field trips, or doing projects that help your hometown and the people who live there. Cub Scouting means "doing." Blue and Gold Banquets In February, when Scouting celebrates its "birthday," packs across the country hold blue and gold banquets. In nearly all packs, the banquet is a very special event. Cub Scout Camping Learn to live in the outdoors. Camping takes you on exciting adventures into the natural world. Cub Scout Derbies Racing in a Cub Scout derby is great fun. You'll get to design your racing vehicle, work with a parent to build it, and see it perform on race day.
Step 2: Recruit Leaders (Boys or Books?)
Outings and Field Trips "Outing" is a big part of Scouting. Cub Scouts get out and about with many kinds of outdoor fun, such as field trips, hikes, nature and conservation.
Decide as a parent, would you rather help the pack by working directly with the boys or by working with the “books”
An adult application needs to be completed for all new leaders
Boys—Each organized dens needs 1 parent to volunteer to be the den leader and at least 1 parent to be an assistant den leader
Cub Scout Day Camp and Resident Camp
Books—The other parents will be asked to volunteer to help on the pack committee as an event chair, secretary, treasurer, advancement chair, etc.
Camp offer opportunities for scouts to shoot b.b. guns, archery, swim, hike, learn about nature, build confidence, and get outdoors.
Service Projects Doing service projects together is one way that Cub Scouts keep their promise "to help other people."

Cub Scouting is a home and neighborhood-centered program designed to support family life for boys in second through fifth grades. Each Cub Scout learns to respect his home, country, God, and other people. The program also helps boys this age to:

WEBELOS & ARROW OF LIGHT When a Cub Scout has completed the third grade (or becomes 10 years old), he transfers to a Webelos den. Led by an adult Webelos leader, the boy works on 7 adventures for the Webelos badge and then in those who complete their 4th Grade year may join the Arrow of Light (the highest award in Cub Scouting). Camping and outdoor programs are an important part of the 18 month Webelos program. In the Spring of a Webelos Scout’s 5 th grade year, he graduates from Cub Scouting into the adventure of Boy Scouting at an impressive graduation ceremony.
