INTRODUCTION
To tell the truth, before applying for “CJK VENTURE PROJECT”, I had thought of this project as one of investigation contents of “Fuji Award”. So I thought that “All I need is only the evidence of my attendance, so all I should do is only the minimum communication!!“ In short, I was going to cut corners moderately in this project. However, I had to change my mind on opening ceremony. “opening” means not only a beginning of this project, but also our communication with foreign scouts. We were required for English communication anywhere. It was very hard but excited my curiosity. Now, looking back upon those days, I get three points on this project. 1. COMMUNICATION 2. PROGRAM 3. HOMESTAY I want to make my statement of these points generalization of CJK VENTURE PROJECT.
1.
COMMUNICATION
My communication skill must be the worst of all participants. “Communication skill” means not only English speaking skill, but also Japanese. Maybe I don’t have interest in other people. So I couldn’t talk to foreign scouts by myself. Nevertheless, they talked to me many times during programs. They might have regard me as shy or strange, but they tried to talk to me!! Every time they talked to me, I was so moved that I couldn’t think about next words. In mumbling, I was very ashamed but my heart was full of thanks to them. I won’t forget Japanese fellows’ and youth stuffs’ helps. They were worried about me, and push my back to communicate with foreign scouts through encouragement and their active attitude of communication. I couldn’t live up to their expectations enough, but I was given great deal of energy. I really thank all of you!!
2. PROGRAM I hear the programs of this project had been planed minutely by youth stuffs in so many meetings, and prepared for smooth management long time ago. I know that their efforts and helps are so great and thankful, and following suggestions will make
14
them anger. Nevertheless, as I want this project to be more beneficial and effective, I suggest only two points! u Lack of contact means. I think that this problem is only among Japanese participants. That is because it affected only Japanese participants’ assembly and “Japan night”. For contact with each other, we used mainly SNS, LINE and Facebook. This was decided on the beforehand meeting. But how to use these contact means for different ways was not decided. That was why; we were confused about where the information of “Japan night” and the necessary data was. So I think we should have used LINE for usual contact and Facebook (I recommend other online strange?) for sharing the necessary data. Furthermore, we should have shown each other our cell phone number for an emergency contact.
Nature program I was the most disappointed at this program in all programs of this project! Why? First, transportation was very very very bad! Except weather in those days wasn’t suitable for outdoor activity, I felt pain to walk too long distance to make the established line without rest. We participated to have exchanges with each other, NOT to be on a diet!! I think the location of Nojima and Kamakura camp site was a primary factor of this problem. The distance between Nojima and Kanazawa Hakkei station is very long, and there is no object which interests us and be topics. Kamakura camp site and Kamakura station too. I think the distance between the base and the activity place should be much nearer. Second, I wonder why we volunteered for boy scouts group. I think that “Volunteer activity” must be for society. So I was surprised when I found myself volunteering in boy scouts camp site. Exactly, foreign scouts might be satisfied with “labor”, and Japanese scouts might be satisfied with testing their English skill. But I’m sure that our “ Volunteer activity” was not true. The “labor” without feedback should be replaced by true volunteer activity to society.
3. HOMESTAY I didn’t know I should have stayed with host family, so I was puzzled at first. But, as I talked to Tony, my strain was disappearing. After we noticed that each other like railway, I show him the railway map of the Tokyo metropolitan area and taught him which train we were using, and he gave me the railway map of Taipei city and taught me his common used line! I learned the common hobby connect with even foreign people!! Last night of home stay, he gave me his uniform (he said “because my baggage won’t close with this in”?)! As the return, I gave him neckerchief. In this way, we made sure our friendship and promised to meet again and stay at Tony’s home at next time. Homestay is very meaningful for those who do and accept, I understand. This is the most effective way of mutual understanding and the international
15
friendship.
4. CONCLUSION At first, I told that I had been going to cut corners. But, actually, I should have thrown myself completely into the communication with foreign scouts. Finally, I got that this attitude is important to make international friendships. Those days in CJK VENTURE PROJECT 2013 may become experiences or memories in the past, but a fact that foreign scouts and we understand and make friends with each other will have to be our confidence and support in the future.
