A look behind the Scenes at some of the Teams working in the background to make Jamboree 2008 run smoothly! Beg, borrow, but they do not steal! Procurement Team When we caught up with Brenda Corbally head of the Procurement Team for Jamboree 2008 she was in the middle of negotiating - trying to convince a company to donate items to the Jamboree cause. The Procurement Team aims to ‘beg, get best prices and or items sponsored’ she said. ‘The Jamboree procurement list is an input of all items needed by individual team members and from there (behind the scenes) it is broken down into categories, for example: tools/machinery, marquees, household equipment such as; fridges, kettles, microwaves, wood, site safety equipment, building materials etc etc. After items are broken down, it leaves us in a better position approaching companies for quotes as they are getting a large order. However, the first thing that Procurement would try to do is to get companies to donate items directly to us. If this doesn't work, we will then look for items at cost or try and get a good discount.

Céad Mile Fáilte Romhaibh The International Team Sue Thomas, head of the International Team, looks forward to welcoming over 1000 international scouts and leaders to the Jamboree next August. Scouts will be traveling from all parts of the globe including America, Canada, Asia, Europe and Australia. They will come from a variety of different cultures, backgrounds and religions making Jamboree 2008 a truly international experience. We hope to have a profile of some of the groups attending in the next issue. Céad mile fáilte romhaibh means 100,000 welcomes in Irish.

Procurement needs a lot of contacts in many different areas; a lot would firstly be done by phone. If we can get a meeting then normally the company is interested and will have further talks with you. Really it is a bit of an ‘Arthur Daly’ task. You need good persuasive skills sometimes to get to the person you need.’

Park Over There Love! Security Team Scouters, If you’re over 21 years of age and haven’t already signed up to staff on this years Jamboree in Punchestown, the Security/Stewarding team would love to hear from you. We are looking for Scouters who are available from the 2nd – 10th August, are customer-care orientated, health & safety conscious, team players, willing to do some shift work and most importantly will lend a hand to make this Jamboree grrrrreat! Full training and the necessary equipment will be provided. For further info contact: media @jamboree2008.ie and we will put you in touch with Mark Flynn, heading up the Team. Ph: +353 1 4956300

Wrap the Green Flag Round Me Boys! Environmental Team Hugh Mc Lain is Team Leader with the Environmental Team. He explains to the Media team what his task is:

Ready Steady Cook!!! Staff Catering Crew Hi my name is Annette Byrne, team leader with the Staff catering crew. At the moment we are meeting with various catering companies, looking at menus and tormenting the Procurement team! There are 22 of us on the crew. Our journey is only beginning and hopefully by the time the Jam comes around we’ll be well acquainted. We’ll be the jam & ham of your Jamboree - making sure that staff are well fed and in fine fettle for the challenges that lie ahead! If you have any special requests please contact me: annettebyrne@jamboree2008.ie

Any Chance Of A Marquee?! Quartermaster Team Our Quartermaster Team assembled for the first time on Sunday 13th in Maynooth. Various roles & duties were allocated to team members. Our team head is Willie O Connor, Deirdre is our Sec/ PA, Jimmy Adams and Brendan Martin are in charge of equipment hire and procurement. Helen Lynch and Christine O'Keeffe are looking after equipment for international groups and Jason Olivieri is doing all our IT stuff. Its full steam ahead… we are currently working closely with all teams to provide a smooth running Jamboree.

‘In a nut shell I was appointed as Environmental Team Leader to reduce the carbon footprint for the Jamboree. After some initial investigation it became clear that a negative carbon footprint would be achievable. The Environmental Programme is two fold - there is an Environmental Awareness Programme that is being run up to the Jamboree which if the section implement they will receive a Green Flag award. It is hoped that this programme will be renewable each year as well. Secondly, to reduce our carbon foot print, we are asking each section to take part in National Tree week and plant trees.’ Hugh says that Environmental issues are close to the core of what Scouting is all about and urges all groups to take part. We will have further information on this in our next issue.

Where It All Happens... The Sub Camps! There are nine sub camps on Jamboree 2008: Giants Causeway, Dun Áilinne, Hellfire, Newgrange, Sceillig, Crúacháin, Tara, Tír Na nÓg and the Staff Sub Camp. The Sub Camp names are based on Irish geographical or heritage sites.

Keeping her Lit on Hellfire! Hellfire Subcamp: Weather Forecast Hot, Hot, Hot! “It’s going to be one ‘Hell of a Time’ for anyone lucky enough to be camping on the Dublin Metropolitan Scout Province Sub Camp—better known as Hellfire” says Sub Camp Chief Darragh O Briain. Darragh and his assistants, good time veterans Colin Corcoran & Susie Lynam, and their super talented team reckon they are pulling out all the stops so that each and every cub, scout and leader from Ireland and abroad have a not-to-be-forgotten Hellfire fun- filled Jamboree experience. When the Sub Camp Chiefs were asked to pick a name for their sites they were asked to consider names that made reference to a geographical or heritage feature in their Scouting Province. We jumped at “Hellfire”, the local name for the infamous ruined hunting lodge on the crest of Mont Pelier Hill overlooking Dublin City. It’s just a stones-throw from Larch Hill, our National Campsite and Scouting & Jamboree office. The name has a great ring to it, it’s the venue of many cub and scout hikes for Dublin based Groups and it is steeped in sizzling mythology which suits the devilment planned for the Sub Camp. The team has been flat out coming up with ideas, activities and features of the site to make sure you all have a brilliant time... Just like the original Hell Fire Club the emphasis is on fun and having a

“wickedly” good time. PL’s can expect a jamboree-length game where they lose their souls, Patrols will be challenged to sleep off the ground for a night and keep watch for a band of devil night raiders. Among other things troops can compete for the Hellfire Gate Design Trophy and get stuck into some flaming good programme. Cubs can expect to be run off their feet, get wet, hear some chilling tales and have fun, fun, fun. Visiting Beaver Wizards can expect to come face to face with a hellish creature! There will also be something for leaders: our volunteer programme, a hammock park and a dedicated Scouter Support team to provide everything from information to newspapers, massages & a nice cup of tea. The Hellfire Sub Camp team are a ‘workhard, play hard’ bunch of misfits from Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Slovakia, Kildare, Antrim, Monaghan and Tyrone who can’t wait to get stuck into some serious carry on and mayhem with the Hellfire campers. The staff will be based and fed in “Hells Kitchen” and look forward to welcoming and working with all who pass through Hell’s fiery gates.

Dun Áilinne Sub Camp It’s all Happening down in the South East When the media team got talking to Jo Coy Sub Camp Chief for the S.E. Sub Camp we asked why they picked the name of Dun Áilinne. Jo said that all Sub Camps where asked to pick names based on a geographical or heritage feature in their Scouting Province. Dun Áilinne is unquestionably Kildare's most important heritage site, being as it once was, the Royal Site of Leinster and was probably constructed during the late Bronze Age about 2,500 years ago. It was the scene of a lot of celebrations, clan gatherings, meetings and elections of chieftains. It will now be the scene of the gathering of all scout groups in our Sub Camp where all celebrations will be held. It is also one of Ireland's most important pre-historic sites. It is for example, the largest man-made pre-Norman earthen feature in the country covering forty four acres. It is also the best preserved - indeed one of the best preserved in all of Western Europe. Dun Áilinne was recognized in 1837 by John O'Donovan a folklorist working with the Ordnance Survey, when they were carrying out the first mapping of Ireland. “I think John was doing some training in mapping hoping he could join Scouting”. Knockaulin, on which the enclosure stands, rises to 601 feet and the earthen

ditch that forms the perimeter of the site is almost a mile in circumference and reaches a depth of fifteen feet. “The design of our gateway will be nearly as big”. It involved the excavation by our early ancestors of some thirty thousand tons of rock and soil to gouge it out of the hill slope. Our Sub Camp logo will be based on a plan of Dun Áilinne We are currently working on our programme and have some very interesting stuff for all our groups to get involved with. When we get the names of all groups in our Sub Camp we will be writing to you to all to fill you in on what’s happening. The site of Dun Áilinne is located about 10 or so miles west of Punchestown.

I'm a Mammy Get Me Out Of Here! Tír na nÓg—the Staff Family Sub Camp - booking now taking place Gerry Finnegan and his team have been hard at work putting together plans for the Staff Family Sub Camp to be called after a special place in Irish legend—Tír na nÓg—the land of youth! For some staff these 10 days are their annual holidays from work so the Jamboree team have set up a separate Sub Camp where families of staff can come along and spend their days and nights together taking in the special atmosphere that only a Jamboree brings. Gerry says that the Staff Family Sub Camp is open to families of all staff members and is located close to the other Sub Camps. Camper Vans & Caravans are welcome. The Sub Camp will have its own entrance and exit allowing for greater movement to the independent family. Bookings are now taking place via the website, and numbers are limited. The cost is €120 For the Camping pitch including 1 adult. There will be an extra cost of €10 for every person over 6 years for the week, who also stay at that pitch. All kids under 6 years of age are Ph: +353 1 4956300

Fax: +353 1 4956301

free. The fee includes a welcome pack, camp fees and administration. It also covers all electrics, waste, facilities etc. Family members will have access to all Jamboree events, (programme excluded). It is a self catering site—no food is included in the fee - catering facilities must be brought by families. The Sub Camp has its own central hub area for information & relaxation and will have its own excursions and day trips, these are optional extras.

Jamborius! Calling all Scout Wizards!

Breaking News! IF YOU’RE AGED 6 – 8 THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE: PUNCHESTOWN NAAS CO KILDARE WENDESDAY 6TH AUGUST 2008 THEME: SCHOOL OF WIZARDRY AND MAGIC SUB THEMES: AIR, WATER, SPIRIT, EARTH, FIRE ‘IT’S GOING TO BE GREAT!!!’

We nabbed Fiona Finn, Team Leader for August 6th 2008 back in early January... ‘Hi guys, hope you’ve all recovered from unwrapping all those Santa pressies. I have parked my broom and only have a 10 minute parking disc so I’ll be brief. I am so excited, my Core Team and I are working away and planning the best day possible for 6– 8 year olds. The 6th of August is the day to be at the Jamboree. We have plenty of ideas, energy, and willing participants - we have decided to use the theme of Wizardry and Magic for our action packed day – get those costumes and wands ready. Registration will commence soon, so get ready to enrol at the School of Wizardry & Magic. We are hoping that the majority of Beavers in each

Scout County will enrol. We don’t want our costumes crushed, so we will stagger the arrival times. Don’t worry there will be more details set in our prejamboree programme pack. Junior Wizards will have to undergo lots of home tuition to prepare for the day: spells, potions and magical mayhem - have your wands at the ready… We’ve developed a School of Wizardry and Magic with programmes to suit everyone! We have whisked up a special goodie pack for all Wizards to take home with a very special necko and badge. We can guarantee the bag will be as jam packed with tricks and treats as the day itself – you wouldn’t believe half of it if I told you its just amazing – but you’ll have to wait for the magic to be unveiled. My team will assign a prefect to lead groups on the day (they will also be collecting your lovely lunch) and your leaders can both keep a watchful eye and learn wild wizardly ways… Before I forget, some of the bases refuse to stand still for long. I’m hoping to have them trained before the 6th of August but they are an unruly bunch and you will have to keep a watchful eye out - or before you know it they will have caught up with you. The programmes are bursting with fabulously exciting challenges and best of all you will learn some new skills – and get the chance to get wickedly messy. Yes, that’s right you will need spare clothes… I have organised with the Camp Chief to get special passes to visit the main camp. You’ll need comfy shoes for walking and plenty of energy to complete the breathtaking trail, visit the Sub Camps and not only see what the Cubs, Scouts and Ventures have been up to – you’ll get to try some of the activities too!!! Oh my dear, my broom – it’ll be clamped, I’d better dash – more news in the next newsletter…’

Name the Newsletter Competition The result is in...

As you will see from our Newsletter cover we have a winner of the naming competition. The winner is Gerry Moan who is Group Leader with the Dunshaughlin Scout Group in Co Meath. Gerry’s entry of ‘The Jam…’ was the one chosen by the media team from over 50 entries. The rationale behind the name in Gerry’s own words: “The Jam…” the dot dot dot suggesting there is more to come! Congratulations to Gerry who will receive his prize in the next few days. We would like to thank all the people who entered the competition.

Listen to Us!!! Young Correspondents We are still looking for Scouts or Ventures to take part in the Young Correspondents programme. We have people from some of the Sub Camps but are still looking to appoint from the others. This programme is limited to allow all of the members to get their interviews, written pieces etc published. If you want to get involved send your details along with a short piece to media@jamboree2008.ie

Media starts to take an interest in Jamboree2008... Jamboree 2008 got various national media coverage in the last month. The first mention was in the Irish Catholic Newspaper when Dermot Lacey, former Mayor of Dublin city and member of Scouting Ireland, wrote a piece on youth work in Ireland... ‘Perhaps above all we need a significant shift in the media’s attitude to young people and so-called ‘celebrities’. We need to value and laud the good work and community endeavour carried out by so many and recognized by so few. We must begin to confer the celebrity tag on the Youth Club Leader, the local Football, Hurling or Hockey Club Managers and the young people involved in environmental, cultural and community work throughout our country. The young people who give of their time working in their communities or simply enjoying the normal pursuits of the young deserve our support and our praise. We need new role models for young people and we need those who work with young people to be acknowledged as having a role to play and that their voice will be heard. We need to see the President of the National Youth Council or the Head of the Girl Guide Movement to be as regular a panelist on Questions and Answers as Nell McCafferty or Eamon Dunphy. We need to see the World Scout Jamboree that will take place in Ireland next August to be covered, not in terms of the ‘ten miles of sausages’ type approach so beloved by the media but by reporting on the adventurous engagement in activities by ten thousand young people in a spirit of Fun, Friendship and Challenge. In the immortal words of Bill Clinton, ‘I still believe in a place called Hope’. I Ph: +353 1 4956300

Fax: +353 1 4956301

still believe in young people. It is the adults who worry me.’ The other major article appeared in the UK Scout Association Magazine where they listed the top 10 things to do in 2008. One of them was to attend the Jamboree2008 in Ireland. This has been reflected in the amount of UK Groups who have booked into the Jamboree. On a recent Ryan Tubridy Show on Radio 1 they were reviewing the top events to take place in Ireland this year and one mentioned was the Jamboree. Two scouts who took part in the recent Young scientist Exhibition where interviewed on the Gerry Ryan Morning Radio Show on 2fm. When Gerry heard the girls where doing a Scout project he asked them a few questions on the big Jamboree taking place in Punchestown in the summer. He seemed to know a great deal about Scouting and especially about the Jamboree. He called it ‘Oxygen For Scouting’. E-Mail: info@jamboree2008.ie

various teams to meet. He also unveiled the outline staff programme for the duration of the camp. A lot of teams spent the afternoon over at the Punchestown site organising their area. As a certain well known politician once said: ‘A lot done, but more to do…’

The meeting was opened by Christy McCann Camp Chief. He urged all teams to keep up the work rate and finished it of by saying that the Jamboree was going to be great! Jamboree 2008 Gifted World Jamboree Equipment Jamboree 2008 have been gifted the remaining equipment left over from the World Jamboree 2007 that was held in the UK. The WSJ ’07 team needed the equipment to be moved out of the warehouse they had it stored in by the end of 2007. We took delivery of this equipment just before Christmas. It was a joint effort between a number of the teams involved in Jamboree 2008. We sent a few of our leaders over to help with the loading of the equipment. Cathal Yates from the venue team, Stephen Reilly from procurement went over along with John Moran who is a leader in Celbridge. We contracted 4 trucks to go over and bring back all the equipment. The only item left in the warehouse when we were finished was the forklift which we didn’t take as we couldn’t fit it on the truck. The equipment was then delivered to Brian Gray, Venue Team Manager, where it will be sorted through and got ready for the Jamboree. There is a large amount of equip-

ment which has been given to us including marquees, dining shelters, patrol boxes & benches. This equipment will be very useful for us at the Jamboree and now that we have it we can get it all ready in advance. We were also given the main gateway into WSJ ’07 and some of the Eurojam gateways too. The gear was all unloaded in one day led by Cathal Yates and helped by a number of Ventures and other leaders on the day to make the job that bit easier—Ventures Shane Hayes and Conor Lawlor were part of the team we assembled on the day to unload the gear. See picture. We have a lot of work to do before the Jamboree but this is the start and it is now work in progress. We’ll keep you right up to date over the next few months.
