Will Duan, violin Will Duan, 20, from Andover, Massachusetts, is a violinist and composer studying mathematics and music at Emory University. He has been playing violin for 16 years and currently studies under Jessica Wu. Duan has also been a composer for five years and he studied under Derek Jacoby at Phillips Academy. Duan serves as the assistant principal second violin in the Emory University Symphony Orchestra and he served as concertmaster in the Phillips Academy Chamber Orchestra. He is an avid participant in all things music at Emory, including chamber music and an improvisation ensemble. Duan is a champion of Baroque music and his compositions often carry contrapuntal sophistication and finesse inspired by that era. Today, Duan is premiering his work, Suite for Violin in Baroque Style, which serves as a spiritual sequel to the popular Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin by Bach. In his free time, Duan enjoys recreational mathematics as well as playing contract bridge. He would like to thank his parents for their love and support; his past teachers, Holly Barnes, Derek Jacoby, and Akiko Hirose Silver, for their unending encouragement; and his friends for their kindness.
