Product Review - Couture Creations Anna Griffin Mix & Match Pigments

Mixed Media is the 'IT' phrase in scrapbooking and crafts right now. This is a process that I enjoy immensely. I use texture paste and/ ink and watercolours on most of my layouts and chippies. When I saw the Pigment Powders I was very excited to play with them. Pigment Powder can mixed with texture paste, embossing powder, various liquid inks, glaze and even water to create different colours and finishes. You can control the intensity of the colour by adding more or less. The powders have a brilliant shine.

How to use the Product by Jowilna Nolte To create a coloured embossing paste to apply through a stencil I used about 2 teaspoons full of texture past and then added half a flat teaspoon of pigment powder to the paste. Mix it thoroughly together for the pigment to colour the paste. Then apply the paste using a palette knife through your stencil. The pigment can be mixed into texture paste, embossing paste, gesso, embossing powder, mists, liquid inks etc. The pigment gives a beautiful shimmer to whatever medium it is mixed into. The pigment can also be applied to embossing ink like Versamark. For the arrow I added a layer of Versamark ink by tapping the ink pad lightly onto it. Use a small soft paint brush and dip it into the pigment powder. Pounce the powder onto the

inked arrow to transfer the pigment powder. Continue until the entire arrow is covered in pigment. Use a soft large paint brush and lightly dust off the excess pigment. Seal the pigment in by adding a layer of glaze to the arrow and leave to dry. Adding pigment to Versamark ink can also give you different looks and effect. By stamping onto black cardstock in Versamark and then applying the pigment to the ink on the black gives an amazing effect. The pigment really comes to life on black and dark backgrounds. TIP: The dimensional glaze has a really amazing effect on the pigment powders in that it seems like the pigments floats in side the glaze.

Product Review - Penelope Dee

Tips on getting the most out of your stencils 1. Start working from the outer edges of the stencil, working towards the centre. Unless required, stay away from applying product over the entire stencil, creating a blocked area. This draws your eye to one area and prevents a flow in the design. Rather apply in the shape of rounded letters as a reference, such as C, U, S, Q.

2. Don't apply too much product as it'll seep under the stencil. You will achieve better results by applying two thin layers rather than a thick one. 3. If you want to repeat the design, wash or wipe the stencil before using. The Penelope Dee stencils have an 'open' side to enable you to flip the stencil to continue and matching the design. The designs on the open edge can also be used as a decorative strip for doodling and decorative lines. The Distress Markers are perfect for this as they have a plastic nib which remains fine when used with a stencil. 4. Regularly wash the stencils in warm water, dry carefully and store flat. THIS ISSUE'S FEATURED DESIGNER

I started scrapbooking on 20 July 2007. I had a very stressful job and a friend recommended that I join her doing Scrapbooking. I thought she was crazy. It looked like “spoeg and plak” to me and I could not imagine why anyone would want to do it. But I knew I needed a hobby that was totally unrelated to my job – and I took the plunge and walked into a local Scrapbook Shop and said – here I am, I want to scrapbook – what do I need? Well, they saw me coming

03

SCRAP AFFAIRS ISSUE 51

and of course I left with LOTS of stuff I did not need – but who cares! LOL! That Saturday a lady at the shop showed me heat embossing – and oh my! When that powder melted – that was me hooked on Scrapbooking and of course in love with Heat Embossing! I was drawn to Scrapbooking because it involves preserving memories and telling stories. I studied journalism and have always loved telling stories and taking photos.

Scrapbooking was the perfect hobby for me. Of course I had no idea of design, but I realised quickly that it was important to me to understand why certain “things” just did not look right to me and others did. I bought Cathy Zielske’s book – Clean Line Design – and honestly, that book taught me so much about design. Of course I just love paper, but altering elements, making them work for my layout is what I love most about Scrapbooking.

I don’t spend any time on Pinterest and I don’t visit blogs anymore or watch Youtube – but when I started (before Pinterest and Facebook!) I did – I was like a sponge! My style... hmmm. I don’t know if I have one. I like everything. Some days I just like a plain white paper with some stamping and inking, other days I just feel like using pretty papers to tell a story. I believe Scrapbooking is intensely personal – although, when we create, it is meant to be shared. Yes, I am sure sometimes you just create for your own personal enjoyment, but as God displays His Glory in His Creation and in each of us - as we are created in His Image - so do we need to be uplifted by sharing our 'creations". We are preserving your memories for future generations and we should be happy and satisfied with what we do! There is no WRONG thing to do in Scrapbooking. When I teach classes, I often see and hear how stressed people get. It makes me very sad. I think sometimes we miss the point of scrapbooking – it is supposed to relieve stress, not add stress to your life. It is supposed to be an outlet and therapeutic.

It is not a competition. We are all different – we have different memories and we see things differently. I LOVE seeing what people create and feel very honoured when they share their precious memories with me. Scrapbooking changed my life - I love teaching and sharing. The people I meet and the friendships that I have made over the past almost 10 years have been priceless and I am so grateful to my friend for insisting I try scrapbooking… Just by the way – she also still scrapbooks! Dankie, Donsie. Xxxx

THIS ISSUE'S FEATURED DESIGNER

Hi, I’m Michelle, or as my family and friends call me “Shells”! It’s not often that one gets to write about themselves, and sitting at my desk, my initial thought was “Piece of Cake”… right? Well, actually, NOT!! So after some more thought, here I go… It was a year before my Dad’s 60th birthday and I was helping my late Mum plan a special birthday party for him. I was at a complete loss as to what to give him. I wanted something different, something from ME, something from my heart, in other words something SPECTACULAR! After doing a little research, I came across Scrapbooking, and it was one of those light bulb moments! PERFECT … all that creativity was me to a “T”! Well, that was twelve and half years ago now and I haven’t looked back. Actually, I do look back at that first album, the one I created for my Dad, and quietly think to myself, oh dear did I really “do that”! I have always been into arts and crafts, and have had a go at just about every hobby under the sun. I enjoyed them all but nothing really grabbed me… until scrapbooking!

07

SCRAP AFFAIRS ISSUE 51

I love absolutely everything about this craft; the products, the creative processes and the way it has evolved for me. For me, it’s the most wonderful incorporation of all my favourite mediums, drawing, sewing, painting, but with no restraints or rules to hold back my creativity. Regrettably I don’t always have as much time to scrap now-a-days – we all know that “A mother’s work is never done”. Being Mum’s Taxi to two active (and wonderful) teenagers fills most of my time, as well as two Rottweilers, a Schnauzer, numerous birds and of course a husband! BUT, when I do, they all know… it’s my time, my escape, a wonderful place to relax, reflect and let my creative juices flow. I have created albums, cards, tags and mini albums and still do scrapbooking pages but for me, at this moment … I absolutely love mixed media. It’s everything in one page - canvas, creating texture, dimensions and moreover experimenting with colours, sprays, flowers and embellishments. As a Penelope Dee brand

ambassador, I use Glenda Viljoen's lovely range of products, as well as Prima Marketing art products (Finnabair) any and all sprays, as well as the Tim Holtz product range, and I am excited by new products and ideas. I find inspiration from all over, everyday life… a celebration or milestone, maybe a photo or memory, finding “that” paper, perhaps even something I see on social media. Then there are all the talented artists out there such as Finnabair; Stacey Young and Di Garling, (just to mention a few!) who inspire me.

“I scrap therefore… my husband’s broke!”

SCRAP AFFAIRS ISSUE 51

Sometimes the ordinary, dull roads we take all the time, reveal something so beautiful – so out of the ordinary – that you just need to stop and be amazed. September 2015 – Priscilla and I were on our way to Bloemfontein to teach classes. We were on the road we always take – between Uitenhage and Jansenville – when suddenly we were surrounded by fire – fiery flowers! WOW... it was absolutely amazing! Both Priscilla and I are avid photographers, so we started snapping away... (remember what I said in the previous issue about taking photos... you can never take too many photos!) Celebr8 asked me to use one of their stencils in a few different ways... and needless to say, I got carried away!

The steps in this lesson focus on the techniques used on the page. Use the photo of the layout to recreate the page in your style with YOUR memories – I am just here to help you get started!! Mix All Purpose Vegas Gold Ink with Clear Crackle Paste and apply to edges of page through stencil. Blend over it with your Pearlescent Beige Brilliance Ink (or mostly any other dye or pigment ink) to create a resist effect. You can also achieve this effect using Couture Creations Liquid Drops or Liquid Pearls – or really, any product with the same properties!

Use various Brilliance and Memento Inks to add colour to a stamped image. Create focal areas on a blank background. In this instance – I did it with the dandelions in the centre of the page as well as the flourish corners. If you don’t own Memento or Brilliance inkpads – try any of the inks you own!

Spotlight

Cover plain paper with book paper and die cut elements using a manual die cut machine. Ink the elements using a dabber – in this layout I used the technique on the leaves.

• Create more technique pieces than what you need. You never know when you might need an extra one. • Don’t be scared of inks. You probably own most or ALL of the inks you need to do most techniques. • Try techniques on a piece of scrap paper first before you do them on your main project. • Never be afraid to experiment! • HAVE FUN FUN FUN!! Punch several circles from a large circle punch. Use a patterned pair of scissors to cut a spiral into the circle. Use a quilling tool to created rolled flowers. You can also use a rolled flower die (or two) if you own such dies and cut it using your GoCut and Emboss Machine/Cuttlebug.

Use a ruler and draw a border around your page. Use a watercolour pencil and a Fantastix tool/brush to blend the crayon to add interest to your layout.

Sprinkle the image with embossing powder. Use a combination of white, silver and clear embossing powder for variety. Shake off the excess powder and return to the container. Use a heat gun and heat the powder to melt the granules to a smooth raised effect.

buttons, ribbons, thread, beads and cord. TIP: To create a tone on tone look, emboss black stars onto black paper, brown stars onto the Kraft paper and white stars onto white cardstock.

Use Kraft Essentials and Onyx Black patterned paper to create your boxes. The sample boxes measure 5x5cm. Score, fold and assemble the boxes.

Alternate black and Kraft coloured boxes for variations and interest. To create your own coloured embossing powder to match your patterned paper, colour your embossing powder or mix a variety of embossing powders together for a unique colour option. With these beautiful, versatile, and proudly SA Lady Pattern Paper products, it’s easy to decorate your home stylishly for the festive season!

Stamp more star images onto black paper and some on the Metallic Silver Little Star Kraft Essentials paper. Emboss the stars. Combine small, medium and large stars in different colours for dimension and texture.

To add some shimmer to the stars paint a layer of Platinum All-Purpose Ink onto the black embossed stars. Spread the ink over the surface using your finger or a sponge dauber. Cut out the stars using scissors or a craft knife. The Platinum AllPurpose Ink leaves a beautiful shiny layer on top of the black paper while it will wipe off of the embossed lines easily.

To thread the boxes, cut 3 strips of cardstock 4cm wide and 30.5cm long. Adhere the strips of cardstock together to form one long strip. Thread the strip of cardstock through the assembled boxes to create the wreath. The lids of the threaded boxes face inwards and the rest of the boxes form the wreath on the outside. Thread the boxes onto the paper strips and adhere the strips together at the end. Adhere the embossed stars to the inside of the wreath. Overlap the stars onto each other and onto the boxes for support. Decorate some of the stars using brads and then decorate your box wreath with embellishments like brads, SPONSORED BY LADY PATTERN PAPER

Inspired by the 'Believe' journal card, I wanted to create a page as a reminder of why we really celebrate Christmas. Yes it is about Santa, Christmas trees & sharing gifts but more importantly it is about the gift of life & forgiveness given to us in the form of Jesus. His love and promise to be with us always, is the greatest gift one could ever wish to receive.

This layout was our little Mila's first Christmas that she actually got all excited with the other kids about Christmas morning and opening presents! We had such a special time and the little doll that she is hugging and squeeeezing so tight was one that MY granny knitted for her... and she loved it from the first time she saw it. During the egg hunt, I was able to capture loads of super cute photos which I really wanted to include. The best way to use multiple photos, is by creating a grid style collage. The repeated sizes & white borders help the collage breathe, allowing the reader to take in each photograph. The title I used was the phrase the kids were using to tease each other. The most "egg-citing" time of the year! When the bunny is in Town, our favourite place to be is at the beach, Once in a young lifetime one should be allowed to have as much sweetness as one can possibly want and hold" -Judith Olney

MATERIALS: Bazzill Cardstock, Celebr8 Patterned Paper, Ranger Inks, ribbons, rick rack, butterflies, circle photo frames, Stamp, Cricut, Punch (Martha Stewart)

The photos of baby Karmi, taken when she was only 3 days old, was my inspiration for this Layout. I had the beige flowers in my stash and it resembled the fringing on the pillow. The cardstock, patterned paper, ribbon and the embellishments I also found in my scrapbook stash. This just shows that sometimes we strike it lucky and do not have to buy any additional stock!! Every year, December, something magical happens. It is not just something in the air, it is something in our hearts. We celebrate the miraculous birth of Jesus that changed the World forever. I love Christmas because for once the world stops and suddenly we see what it is all about‌ love, togetherness, sharing, caring.

MATERIALS: Bazzill Basic, Simple Stories Patterned Paper and Sticker Sheet, Fancy Pants Patterned Paper. Hand writing with a white gel ink pen on black cardstock.

Happiness starts here. Happy 4th birthday AJ! Your wish was for toys and a red dinosaur cake. My wish for you: Be so happy that when others look at you, they become happy too. Hip hip Hooray!

This memorable occasion inspired me to scrap this amazing layout. Our family are very close knitted. We share values that are irreplaceable by modern day living standards. On this special occasion we celebrated my father's 60th birthday. We hosted a surprise party and what a joyous occasion it was! When it comes to family the question should be, “How do you spell LOVE? You don't spell it you feel it.”

MATERIALS: Bazzill, Vintage Emporium Range (Prima), Prima Flower, Prims Resin Clock Face, Prima Glass Glitter, FabScraps chipboard title

My husband and I celebrated 25 years of marriage in December ’15. This is just one of the many photos from a photo shoot we did to mark this milestone in our lives. I used Heat embossing, paper tearing, layering.

My son turned 14 recently, and being a typical teenager all they want is money for their birthdays. Rather than just give him notes, I decided to make him a Money Tree by using a branch and then rolling notes and tying them to the tree. He loved it! I used some gloss to outline elements and added stickles to add bling to the layout. I also created a mini booklet to include more pics and a small pocket too for extra journaling.

The theme of my granddaughter, Amelie’s third birthday party was – Sweet shop. The decorations were so colourful, as was her dress. And she was so excited and bubbly and she looked lovely. I just had to make a bright layout about the event!

MATERIALS: Papers, gesso, flowers, mists, modelling paste, magic powder, splashes, stencils by 13arts.

My daughter had the opportunity to celebrate her 17th Birthday with her friend in Paris. Couple days in the Capital of France was filled with walks, museum visits, good food and shopping. I wonder what we will do next year!
