This years Funky Llama Festival kicked off in full swing with a warm-up party at Varsity Plymouth. With 30% off food and a line-up containing same of gthe festival performers, it definitely warmed us up in style. The Travelling Time-wasters, MC Spike and DJ Dolphin, among others, got everybody on their feet and the dancing didn’t stop until kicking out time! This warm-up event was also the launch of TRP's involvement with the Gig Buddy Scheme. The scheme is part of a national charity promoting the Stay Up Late Campaign. A number of people attending were paired up with a Gig Buddy, meaning that they could stay out later rather than having to fit in with changing support rotas. The pre-festival party was an ideal way for Gig Buddies to get to know each other better before the main festival in a weeks time.
The festival itself took place on Plymouth Hoe on Saturday 13th June and luckily the sun came out just in time. The day itself was a mixture of inclusive events ranging from craft, theatre, storytelling and live music. The festival was also divided into areas such as The Llama Lounge, Crafty Llama and Llama Loud to help visitors make the most of their day. Animate Theatre performed a brilliant immersive version of Alice in Wonderland, Anjali Dance from Oxford held a workshop where participants were encouraged to perform their names through Dance and the stilted ringmaster led people to attempt some tricky circus skills.
The Llama Lounge area was a hub for new and local performers to share their acts with festival goers. Particularly memorable were Miss Carroll Davids and her hilarious dinner party tips ad an excellent performance of 'Whos That Girl' from TRP's own usher Andrew. The main event was the Llama Loud stage where acts from all over the country came to rock the Hoe from 2-11pm. With sets from Cornwall's Haunt the Woods, Zuri Aura and Beat Express from London and there was dancing all day long! The day came to a close with a great set from MC Spike who really brought the day together with his excellent MC skills and his appearance with 'The Straight Jacket Legends', recently signed by Sony USA.
There were so many things going on that there was barely time to take a break, but with savoury crepes, snow cones and a licensed bar there was no need to leave the action. It was a fantastic day that really was a wonderful celebration of inclusive arts in Plymouth and beyond. The next event is on Monday 19 October Funky Llama Wild West club night! Yee-haa!

Who We Are The Special Olympics Movement The Special Olympics Movement is the ‘third arm’ of the Olympics organisation, along with the Olympics and Paralympics, and is dedicated to enhancing the lives of those with an Intellectual (Learning) Disability through training and competition in numerous sporting disciplines, in both summer and winter sports. What We Do SOPD provides a Multi-Sports Club each week for people with an Intellectual (Learning) Disability aged 16 + (if you are under 16 then please contact us via our contact page as we can give you details for opportunities for those under 16). A selection of sports from Boccia, Badminton, Short Map Bowls, Football, Tag Rugby, Kwik Cricket, Judo, Basketball, New Age Kurling, Indoor Athletics, Climbing Wall, Gym, Table Tennis are played, this is to ensure variety and gives everybody a chance to try out different sports. We always try and introduce new Sports as when the opportunity arises. In addition to this weekly Club we have teams entered into various Local Disability Leagues, we also have a weekly swimming club and offer Golf sessions.
We can also provide a pathway to Competition with Special Olympics as not all of the Special Olympics Sports available can be played/trained for on a Club night. Last week l went to the Aspire Event in Plymouth’s Guildhall. The events was for young people with learning disabilities. One of the many people l met was the Plymouth branch of the Special Olympics. The branch has been one of the most successful Special Olympic branches in the UK and has managed to gain coverage from both ITV and BBC Spotlight. So Could Plymouth follow in the footsteps of Bath and more recently Los Angeles and be a host city for the Special Olympics? Well from the information l have been told yes indeed Plymouth could follow them and hold a successful Special Olympics. The only current barrier at the moment is simply there simply isn’t enough accommodation in the city. A barrier which could easily be solved. The Special Olympics would also bring huge opportunities for the growing arts and culture sector in the city. Also it could increase the chances of the Special Olympics being shown more through Uk media, increase the awareness of disability further and strengthen the work already being done by projects such as the Funky Llama Project. All of these benefits could and probably would bring massive economic benefits to the city as a whole. So Plymouth what are we waiting for?

Animate Theatre is a wonderful theatre company for people with or without disabilities. This bespoke theatre group, fronted by professional practitioners Michelle and Anna, aims to enable all within the group to learn various skills and techniques associated with theatre production, both on stage and behind the scenes. Animate provides an accessible and enthusiastic environment where people can learn new skills and increased their personal confidence and development.
For several weeks, Animate attendees from I Grow Care and Support, and elsewhere, diligently practised their lines, created beautiful scenery and made their stunning costumes in preparation for the Theatrical event of the summer! All the audience had to do on July 24th and 25th was to ...'Follow the Yellow-brick road, follow the yellowbrick road'...all the way to the Plymouth School of Creative Arts for an amazing production of, yes you guessed it, The Wizard of OZ.
I was lucky enough to attend one of the performances, along with other I Grow staff, and we were all in agreement that all production members did a sterling job and created a wonderful experience. The costumes were fantastic, the scenery looked amazing and everyone did an extraordinary job remembering lines and song lyrics. Claire played a thoughtful and caring Dorothy, Rory's mimicry of a monkey surpassed our expectations, all Sam's efforts during the weeks of preparation were in evidence and David's Wicked Witch cackle was something to behold and to be incredibly proud of. It really was a great production, full of drama, fun and a few fairy lights thrown in for good measure. It has been a pleasure to see the group progressing over the last few weeks and to experience such a wonderful performance by all the cast.
We are all looking forward to finding out what Animate will be presenting during the Christmas season...will there be a 'Bar Humbug'? We'll just have to wait and see! By Dave Aiken and Nicola Vine
