BUILDING BUSINESS VALUE THROUGH SUSTAINABILITY The world seems to grow smaller by the day. The pressures of population growth, poverty, resource constraints, pollution and climate change challenge each of us, every day, to identify better ways to manage our businesses. Our growing interdependence makes sustainable business practice not simply a choice, but an essential feature of the 21st century economy. As a sustainability-driven benefit corporation, SCS Global Services (SCS) works across the natural resource, product manufacturing, green building, food and agriculture, and energy industry sectors to develop leadership standards and provide rigorous third-party auditing and certification. This cross-disciplinary work has given us unique insights into the challenges faced by companies in achieving their sustainability goals, as well as the latest innovations in operations and technology to overcome these challenges. Sustainability has a way of organically, if not virally, embedding itself into the business culture. Whether embraced as a top-down core business philosophy, or adopted tentatively at the periphery, sustainability can quickly seed itself into the very fabric of a business. One success opens doors to the next experiment, allowing managers, employees, suppliers, partners and customers to reimagine the entire business enterprise from top to bottom. And once adopted, it is difficult to retreat back to old ways of doing business. Metrics are key to assessing the tangible benefits of increased operational efficiencies and lower environmental impacts, which in turn can lead to lower costs, improved employee morale and more effective brand risk management. In this world of increasing dependence on analytics to drive business decisions, it is critical to get these metrics right. We are pleased to provide a full suite of corporate sustainability services to help companies navigate this complex terrain.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Climate change, population pressures, and conflicts are creating unprecedented stresses on our air, water, food, health, and livelihoods. In a world confronted with so many environmental and social challenges, it is reassuring to see leaders in the business community step forward to help drive the sustainable development agenda, alongside government and stakeholder entities. From our vantage point, 2017 represented a steady continuation of this trend. The emergence of new standards for water stewardship, mined materials, and agricultural products, along with advanced technological innovations making it possible to more effectively track progress, were emblematic of this shift toward sustainability practices. The demand for third-party certification of environmental, sustainability, and food quality and safety claims has never been higher. The challenge is to keep it real. To ensure that we are truly helping companies “build business value through sustainability, we maintain a systems perspective, focus on the full value chain, apply appropriate metrics to capture the improvements achieved as well as potential trade-offs, and maintain a consistent third-party viewpoint to provide our clients with objective, unvarnished observations and recommendations.

upon the following foundations:

§§We are financially independent from our clients, and have no financial backing from any institution with an interest in representing our clients or their products.

§§We operate on a fee-for-service basis, providing transparency and ensuring that our fees are not attached to sales volumes.

§§We engage independent laboratories when product testing is required, enabling split samples and anonymity for quality control, while assuring customers that we have no interest in excessive testing.

§§Our Quality System policies insulate our findings from commercial, financial and other pressures as SCS managers document and analyze potential conflicts of interest for each project.

Health Product Declaration® (HPD) Collaborative Announces Third-Party Verification Program Advancing Capabilities for Product Reporting and Transparency in the Building Industry “Health Product Declaration users and manufacturers have been requesting a third-party verification program for HPDs from the outset of the Standard. We deliberately have waited for the Standard to mature and a critical mass of HPDs to be created (over 3,100 now published) so that we can ensure that the verification program has a strong and stable foundation of practice behind it.” John Geyer HPDC Program Director

Indoor Air Quality “By partnering with SCS Global Services, we can provide our customers with a means of reaching an even broader constituency with their healthy indoor air achievements and claims. Our extensive capabilities in VOC emissions testing services perfectly complement SCS’ IAQ certification programs, and provide added value to manufacturers in this crowded market.” Dr. Marc Lor Project Manager, VITO regarding its partnership with

SCS to conducting VOC emissions testing in Europe .

New Study Reveals Lighter Environmental Footprint for Fibers Sourced from Flax and Recycled Clothing. Peer-Reviewed LCA Commissioned by Global Fashion Pioneer Stella McCartney Compares Ten Different Fiber Inputs for Manmade Cellulose Fiber “This rigorous study provides important new insights into how the choice of fiber source determines the impacts of man-made cellulose fiber on the world’s species, forest ecosystems and freshwater, as well as our global climate and human health. For Canopy, these findings reinforce the need to prioritize and advance commercial-scale production of fabrics made from closed-loop fiber solutions such as agriculture residues and recycled fabrics.” Nicole Rycroft Executive Director, Canopy

Numi Organic Tea “Numi has worked with SCS Global Services across a variety of programs, from assurance for our own Fair Labor Practices supply chain program, to Non-GMO verification, and, most recently, as the certification partner for a new Fair Trade USA supply chain. Through our participation with the OSC2 packaging collaboration, we’ve also had the opportunity to work with SCS’ LCA team as a service provider for packaging LCA and marine degradation studies. Across each of these program areas, we are always impressed by the professionalism, expertise, and impeccable customer service delivered by SCS staff. Reports and other deliverables are on-time, well substantiated, and clear in presentation. SCS is truly a trusted partner and valuable resource for any brand seeking to measure and validate their sustainability claims.” Jane Franch Director of Quality, Sourcing and Sustainability
