Member SpotlightMarilyn Sumter
WHEN SHE BECAME A SPERO MEMBER in June of 2001, Marilyn Sumter wanted more than just savings accounts and financial services. She wanted to feel like she belonged. “Community is extremely important to me,” she shared. “Serving the community, being a part of the community, interacting with the community — community is everything.”
As Marilyn got to know the Spero team, she realized she’d found something special. “There is nothing like walking into your neighborhood branch and being greeted with a warmth that makes you feel like family, like they’re always happy to see you.” This sense of belonging gave her the confidence she needed to make a fresh start.
“Spero Financial has helped me in all aspects of my life, from buying my first vehicle and purchasing both of my homes to my personal loans and credit cards. They've helped me on a financial journey that has me settled.” Reflecting on her journey, she added, “They gave me a chance to start my life over.”
The thing that stood out most to Marilyn was the Spero team’s willingness to help, even with situations that other financial institutions tend to avoid. “Everybody messes up on their credit. Everybody doesn't get finances right. Everybody doesn't get budgeting right. Everybody doesn't get life right. But Spero Financial? They're going to stand by your side, comfort you, and help you make your situation better.”
While she’s had plenty of wonderful experiences with the Spero team over the years, Marilyn remembers one in particular that perfectly captured Spero’s commitment to improving the financial lives of its members. Facing a challenging financial situation, she discussed the details with a Spero associate who simply responded, “It’s okay. Let’s see what we can do.”
Let’s see what we can do.
With a smile spreading across her face as she told her story, Marilyn said it’s the “we” that sets Spero apart. “When they comfort you by saying it’s okay and then give you the ability and encouragement to accomplish your financial goals, it makes it easy to let your guard down and see what we can do together.”
