What Is Bioluminescence? Bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism. It’s found in everything from jellyfish to fireflies and shrimp. It makes nighttime kayaking in Havelock island that much more awesome. The bioluminescence is caused by single-celled organisms, that is called dinoflagellates, which are common in water bodies around coral reefs and are usually only visible under water after dark (see, not all night life is on land!). Bioluminescence occurs when these organisms produce excess amounts of light as an example of defense against predators or to find prey. Either way, they use their own bodies as flashlights to lure unsuspecting creatures toward them; it’s not unlike catcalling on city streets.
