Keep Yourself Informed
by Jane Fairchild
I have observed, as a new board member, that there is a lot of misinformation being passed around our community. I have spoken with many of you and the questions I get indicate that you are trying to form opinions without all the facts.
I was in the same boat until recently. I had not attended board and committee meetings because it seemed they were already doing a great job managing our projects and finances. As an Ambassador, I happily share this positive aspect of our community with potential residents. However, when I became a candidate for the Board of Directors, I was encouraged to attend board and committee meetings during the election period. It was a real eye opener for me.
Now, having seen how the Board operates and the great work being done in the various committees, I feel that I would have benefitted by participating more. It has been gratifying to hear residents’ comments, different opinions, and discussions in these meetings.
We have many knowledgeable residents who volunteer and care deeply about SCOV. You don’t have to commit large amounts of time to attend any of the open Association meetings, and they are posted in each "This Week in SCOV" for the following week. Attending a few of these meetings a year will help you to understand and appreciate current SCOV issues and get the real facts from their sources, rather than from our ever vibrant rumor mill. Keep yourself informed.
We Accomplished a Lot
As we wind down another fiscal year, I can’t help but look at all that has been accomplished by our Board and staff. Let’s take a look back. This past year we didn’t start any major projects, but we were able to nearly finish up a significant one.
• The Activity Center was opened after a long time of being closed for renovation. The facility is beautiful, and I’ve heard so many positive comments from residents, the Mayor and other elected officials. We added three restrooms and expanded another as a part of this project. The Kiva Room is a wonderful addition that allows for large gatherings in a setting that lends itself to the beauty of the outdoors. Talking about outdoors and gathering space, the completely redone Kiva patio is a great place. With the shaded area that includes a gas fire pit, it will serve the residents well year-round.
• The Bistro Coffee & Wine Bar is a great addition to the Activity Center. It is comfortable, a nice place to relax and gather with your friends in an environment that is inviting.
• Thanks to a lot of people, SCOV passed a vote to purchase the Copper Health Building. The purchase is completed and the Association now holds title to the property at 1119 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. It has been renamed the Copper Center. The Board of Directors is in the process of taking the proper steps to determine how the building will be used and how this will impact the use of the current Welcome Center.
I would like to thank all of you who shared your wisdom and knowledge that helped us to accomplish so much this past year. All of this was accomplished without a special assessment, which is even more amazing. Kudos to all involved. You are all superb.
