Adventure like a local in SISKIYOU COUNTY!

Siskiyou County, with its unforgettable and uniquely untouched landscapes, lies just an hour north of Redding. Siskiyou’s four geographically unique regions offer a variety of vacation opportunities, from high desert to mighty forests and pastoral valleys, with the mighty Mt. Shasta watching over it all. This itinerary takes you off the beaten path into Yreka and Scott Valley.

1 Start your day off with a locally roasted coffee in Yreka’s Historic Miner Street District. Wander around West Miner Street, a nationally registered Historic Place and home to an art gallery, eateries, and unique shopping and dining opportunities in Gold Rush-era buildings.

2 Next, take a stroll around the reservoir at Yreka’s Greenhorn Park. This park is the largest in the city of Yreka and features a rolling hillside with miles of hiking and biking trails, a disc golf course, picnic tables, and recreation areas. History buffs can get their fix by exploring a ghost town which once used to be a settlement based around mining.

3 After stretching your legs at Greenhorn, take the 15-mile drive from Yreka over Forest Mountain into Scott Valley, where the pastoral valley, views of majestic Marble Mountain Wilderness will captivate you. Grab lunch in the town of Fort Jones or continue along CA Hwy 3 to historic Etna where a brewery and distillery await. Scott Valley is a rich agricultural and ranching community known as the gateway to the Marble Mountains and the Klamath National Forest, both with trails to explore.

4 Ten miles past the tiny incorporated community of Callahan on Callahan-Gazelle Rd, turn onto Rail Creek Road into the Klamath National Forest and make your way on the paved road to Kangaroo Lake. This popular 25-acre mountain lake has a campground overlooking the lake, a paved trail to the lake, accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

5 Finally, head back west and catch the sunset atop Etna Summit. In the summer, through-hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail exit here to head into town to resupply and to get a taste of a small town full of history and charm. Grab dinner in downtown Etna before heading back to your hotel in Yreka!
