Abstract Engagement is necessary in the creation of place. The act of engagement brings together the three seemingly disparate topics of digital gaming, wellness, and phenomenology. The foundation of this thesis lies in phenomenology; this philosophy of experiential meaning and engagement forms the connective tissue between digital gaming and wellness. Research into digital gaming and wellness, specifically the engagement of nature, provides the remainder of this thesis’s analytical body. Using the knowledge derived from digital games and guiding strategies for engaging nature, the research culminates in the architectural design of a wellness retreat and its surrounding grounds in Tampa, Florida. The design employs the engagement techniques of digital gaming as seen through the lens of phenomenology to capture the healing presence of nature. The ultimate purpose of the center is to dissolve and bring users into intimate contact with nature.

TAMPA BAY WELLNESS R

RETREAT CENTER The master’s thesis project seeks to implement principles derived from research into digital gaming, phenomenology, and wellness. The Wellness Retreat Center design employs the engagement techniques of digital gaming as seen through the lens of phenomenology to capture the healing presence of nature. The ultimate purpose of the center is to dissolve and bring users into intimate contact with nature. This dissolution increases with each programmatic wing; from east to west, the center transitions from opaque, orthogonal entry, administrative, and public education areas to transparent, organic residential and dining areas. The journey culminates in the pier resting in the site’s lagoon protected by a verdant ring of mangroves.

radiant daycare center

The Radiant Daycare project called for a site analysis based design. The design is based on sound site analysis and precedent studies, and aims to meet the programmatic needs of the administration, parents, and, most importantly, the children. Nearby traffic patterns, site contours, and the local zoning were major contextual design drivers. The precedent studies yielded an especially meaningful focus: interactivity and play. Children learn through play and interaction. These two qualities are valuable desires of the client, the church group, whose philosophy intertwines them into formalized preschool education principles. The design separates the children into two age groups: two to three and four to five years. The center’s layout reflects their different needs for security and exploration. The younger group resides on the first floor, partially tucked securely into the earth at the northwest. The older children’s area soars from the second level, engaging the surrounding context emulating the children’s growing desire to look outward.

mixed use development The radially organized site and building design of this mixed-use development is driven by the seven principles of design and Le Corbusier’s five points of architecture. Transformation, hierarchy and rhythm are found in both the masses and envelope. Pilotis, the free plan and roof garden exemplify Le Corbusier’s influence. Additional site analysis further informed the design approach. The context, particularly the site’s high visibility, nearby historic neighborhood, and location atop a raised elevation, informed the mass shaping and puncturing transparencies to capture views of the city. From various vantage points in the building and courtyard, the user can watch Tallahassee unfold along its seven hills. The development’s program consists of a ground and second floor retail space, commercial spaces in the top three floors, and a two hundred space parking garage.

st. marks history museum NORTH ELEVATION

This design creates a new museum and educational complex that both respects and complements the site’s history and existing structures, and a plaza to unite them. Initially known only to Native Americans, the site also became home to Spanish, French, British and other Americans in turn. A fort, originally built by the Spanish, watched many come and go. Like all individualized history, each group’s claim to San Marcos faded passing the perceived ownership to others. It is from every history’s inevitable end that the seed for this design was drawn. The new museum and classroom buildings’ forms focus the site toward the preexisting cemetery near the northern edge of the site where a number of Andrew Jackson’s troops are interred. Sloped roofs and radiating forms actively direct perception toward the cemetery symbolically embodying history’s unstoppable march toward death. A regiment of columns, visually punctuating the sloping rooflines, stand guard around the cemetery. Silence and the interred are protected by these sentinels.
