This house was designed for a developer's family in Vadodara. The unique thing about this house is that it was going to be occupied by three generations. Being a Gujarati, the client briefed us stating that the house needed to be a reflection of their roots. It was essential for us to preserve the essence of a family dwelling and letting the home grow with them and be that integral part of their family. The house beautifully blends layers of global and local elements into a canvas that is classical in sentiment and modern in articulation. It is layered into three different levels connected through a central atrium which binds the house together forming a family sitting space.

unconstrained The integration between these spaces at each floor and with inside and outside is extremely compelling. It is a great visual delight. The external dynamics of the house in concrete and exposed brickwork continues inside with white walls and a beautiful contrast of wooden ceiling and furniture. The idea of using a natural material - brick, brought the spaces together, integrating it into one home. The composition of natural materials brought the spaces together, integrating it into one house. Sequential unfolding of spaces, rustic-earthen materials and non-glossy finishes enhance the concept of the interiors.

“The needs of each family member are completely divergent - from a carpentry workshop to a chef's kitchen but at first appearance the house looks like a warm inclusive home.

the challenges “When we got the brief from the client, we anticipated that creating this space is going to be an extremely appealing process. We actually studied some of the traditional Gujarati elements in detail to help recreate similar features to stand as highlights of the house.” - Dexter Fernandes

the influences “The rigorous studying of Gujarati tradition inspired us and gave us a clear idea about how to weave a lot of traditional and ethnic elements into this Modern Haveli.” - Shourya Patel
