Project Description The new César E. Chávez Campus will be a 67,924 square foot facility with 22 classrooms for vocational training, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, General Education Diploma preparation, Business Information Technology, Parent Education and Emeritus (age 55+) programs. It will become the Campus of Excellence for Allied Health Career Training. The facility will include a multi‐purpose room, administrative offices and a Small Business Incubator. Underground parking will provide 149 parking spaces, including preferred parking for carpools and high fuel efficiency vehicles. An adjacent parking structure will provide 320 spaces. The building design is on track to obtain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
Project Status The design of the new campus was approved in June 2012 by the Division of the State Architect (DSA) which must approve all designs for community college district construction. Because of the project’s proximity to the waterfront, the District is required to provide parking for the campus so we are not competing for the public parking currently available near this site. We have proposed the construction of a parking structure on our current Cesar Chavez site on National Avenue, and are awaiting formal review by the City of San Diego. A review of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is also being completed for the selected site. We expect this review to be completed and our requested Coastal Development Permit approved and issued by the end of December. Should approvals be received as currently anticipated, bid packages for the classroom building would be advertised in the first quarter of 2013, with a construction started targeted for mid‐to‐late April. Bid packages for the parking structure would be advertised in August of 2013, with a construction start targeted for late September 2013.
