HELP WITH FEES & PAYMENT
As an adult learner, you will most likely have more financial responsibilities than a younger person. There are several ways in which you may be eligible for financial support. Listed to the right are typical examples of criteria which you might meet.
ENTITLEMENTS FOR STUDENTS AGED 19-23
If you are a student aged between 19-23 and studying for your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, then you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived. The waiver is also available for students who are studying an Entry Level or Level 1 course, where the qualification is essential to continue study at Higher Level in the same or a related subject.
FREE GCSE MATHS & ENGLISH
If you are 19+ and do not already have a C/grade 4 (or above) in Maths or English GCSE, tuition fees for these courses will be free.
GRANTS & BURSARIES FOR ADULT LEARNERS
There are government grants and bursaries available for adult learners to help pay for courses and training. For up-to-date information, visit: gov.uk and search 'grants and bursaries'. Additionally, if you are a parent, you might also be able to get help with childcare costs while you study. See: gov.uk and search 'support while you study'.
LOAN BURSARY FUND
This loan is to help with costs while studying, such as for childcare and travel. For more information, visit: gov.uk and search 'advanced learner loan'.
CONCESSIONS FOR LEISURE COURSES
Concessions are available on many of our leisure courses. For instance, if you are aged 60 and over at the start of the course, you may be eligible for a 20% reduction in course fees.
IF YOU ARE IN RECEIPT OF BENEFITS
If you are unemployed, you might be eligible for free training or a reduction in course fees. You will need to be in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance, enrolled in an Employment and Support Allowance work-related activity group, and be required to do training as part of your Universal Credit claim.
FEE PAID BY YOUR EMPLOYER?
If your employer is paying your course fees, please ensure they have filled in the Employer Sponsorship section of the enrolment form. Your employer will also need to sign the form and provide a Purchase Order number. It is advisable that you do this to avoid any delay in your ability to start the course as scheduled.
STAGED PAYMENTS
If your course fee is over £100 and the duration is 12 weeks or more, then you can arrange to pay in stages using the College Staged Payment Scheme or FlexEd, an external payment scheme. Please visit us in person to arrange a payment plan.
More information about government grants and schemes can be found here: gov.uk and search 'further education'. All current course fees, enrolment forms and concessions can be found at: escg.ac.uk and search 'adult part-time fees'. For any specific questions, please call: 030 300 39699.

YOUR LOAN ENTITLEMENT
The minimum loan amount you can take out is £300 and the maximum loan you can get depends on the course type and course fee. You don’t have to borrow the full cost of your course. The loan will be paid directly to the college once you have attended your course for two weeks or more.
If you want to study but are worried about the financial aspect, don’t fret because there is help at hand. The government currently offers a loan for students who are aged 19 and older. Advanced Learner Loans are another way to cover the cost of your course if you are over 19 and planning to study any Level 3 to Level 6 qualification that will give you a qualification at the end of it. The Advanced Learner Loan is paid by the Government and is not dependent on your income and there are no credit checks.
IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR THE LOAN:
• You must be 19 or older • Your course must be a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification • You must be a UK resident and have been living here for three years before starting the course • You must be a UK national or have a ‘settled status’
Apply online or download the application You can download your application from at: gov.uk and search 'advanced learner loan' To help you complete the application you will need your ‘Learning and funding information letter’ from the college, your National Insurance number, and proof of identity such as your UK passport or birth certificate.
PAYING THE LOAN BACK
You pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earn more than £25,725 a year. You can make voluntary repayments if you want to pay off your loan more quickly. If you are self-employed, you will make repayments as part of your self-assessment tax return.
IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND
If you leave or change your course after the initial two weeks, you will be liable to pay any money back (plus interest) that has been paid to the college by your Advanced Learner Loan.
ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION The outstanding balance of your Advanced Learner Loan may be written off if you continue to pursue and complete a Higher Education course at college or university. For more information visit: gov.uk and search 'advanced learner loan' or call us on: 030 300 39699 to discuss your options further.

UNDERSTANDING LEVELS
LEVEL ONE Functional Skills Maths and English ESOL NVQ Level 1 Awards
We offer a wide variety of programmes. Some lead to nationally recognised qualifications at different levels, the details of which can seem complicated. For a brief overview of how qualifications compare, take a look at the chart, to see the different levels and what they can lead to. In some cases you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to ensure you gain the background knowledge and skill required. In others, as long as you have achieved a certain level of qualification, e.g. GCSE at grade C, you can go on to Higher Level study. If you are employed in a role that requires Higher Level skills and competence, you may be able to ‘jump’ up a level.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) OUR COURSES CONSIST OF SEPARATE SPEAKING AND LISTENING, READING AND WRITING COURSES. Before you start your course, you will do an assessment to determine your level of reading, writing, speaking and listening. From this assessment we will discuss which classes are best for you. When you start your course, your teacher will continue to assess you to find out more about your language needs. Your teacher will help you to decide on targets and what you want to be able to achieve by the end of the course. During the course, you will review these targets and discuss your progress with your teacher. You will learn and practise all four language skills: speaking, listening, writing and reading.
DO YOU NEED ENGLISH FOR WORK, STUDY OR EVERYDAY LIFE?
You will also practise grammar and pronunciation. At the end of the course, all students will take an exam (except for PreEntry classes). You must come to the exam. When you have finished your course, you can take another course in a different skill at the same or a different level.
DO YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR READING, WRITING, SPEAKING AND LISTENING SKILLS? DO YOU WANT TO MEET NEW PEOPLE AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS? If yes, come and study English for Speakers of Other Languages at our Eastbourne, Hastings or Newhaven campuses. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are for adults who are not fluent in English and want to improve their language skills for work, study and life in the UK. We offer a range of part-time ESOL courses for every level, available to study in the daytime or evening. Our experienced teachers use the most up-to-date materials and approaches to make sure each class is interesting, motivating and effective. Classes include group, pair and project work as well as computer-based activities.
WHY STUDY ESOL?
Our ESOL courses are designed to help you to improve your English language and your awareness of British culture and British values. We can also support you in successfully gaining positive progression into work, an apprenticeship, another college course, volunteering, or any other programme that would benefit you.
