Award-Winning

ESC Training Hub.

East Sussex College was selected to establish one of fi ve new decarbonisation academies across Sussex to support the development of skills in retro-fitting and green energy installation. Students and apprentices get to work with the latest retrofitting technology in the construction industry, gaining experience through hands-on learning.

We are ensuring the future of our construction workers, giving them the knowledge and skills they need for a net zero future.

Sustainability at ESC.

It’s not just the Training Hub that’s future-proofing our planet.

We have invested millions of pounds secured through a Salix grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to deliver energysaving projects, with the aim of becoming carbon zero by 2030.

Our decarbonisation plan includes opportunities to decrease energy consumption and heat loads, increase on-site renewable generation, and improve carbon performance across our sites.

This includes the addition of Ground Source Heat Pumps (Ore Valley, Eastbourne and Lewes) and Air Source Heat Pumps (Station Plaza and Lewes).

ESC won the Education Project of the Year award at the Energy Savings Awards 2023! Scan to read more about this story.

Green Initiative.

These trees capture CO2 at five times the rate of oak trees, significantly offsetting the College’s annual carbon emissions.

Our Carbon Offsetting Initiative:

In partnership with the United Nations Association in Eastbourne, we have launched two major treeplanting projects in Uganda and Bangladesh to combat climate change and mitigate natural disasters. We partnered with the Mvula Carbon Capture Project to plant 5,000 tropical hardwood trees in Uganda, including 1,500 endangered Mvule trees.

In Bangladesh, we committed to planting 600 freshwater mangrove trees to protect communities from severe floods. These trees, including Hijol and Karoch, stabilise riverbanks, protect livelihoods, and enhance biodiversity. Both initiatives demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, positively impacting global and local communities.

A-Levels are perfect for helping you get into university!

Level 3 of our A-Level courses achieved a 100% pass-rate in2024! 64

A-Levels are two-year courses ideal for university preparation. Students typically choose three A-Levels or a mix with BTECs/other courses. Our programme follows a linear structure, with exams at the end of the two years, not after each module.

Opportunities.

University - A-Levels are a common route to university. Choosing subjects relevant to your desired degree can help you prepare effectively. Our UCAS surgeries provide guidance on course selection and personal statement writing to support your application.

Apprenticeships - After completing A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. Higher Apprenticeships now offer opportunities to study up to degree level, providing a practical alternative to traditional university routes.

Work - A-Levels can lead directly to full-time positions. Many students have secured roles in local banks, accountancy firms, solicitors, and language schools through work experience placements related to their studies.

Apprenticeships.

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships at East Sussex College offer flexible learning options: day release (one day a week at campus), block release (one week at a time), or work-based learning with some college attendance. You’ll work at a relevant employer, applying and embedding your apprenticeship knowledge, skills, and behaviours in a real work environment.

You will learn on the job and gain qualifications at the same time.

Apprenticeships are for UK residents aged 16+ who have finished secondary education, whether they are school leavers, already employed, or adults.

School Leavers.

If you’re 16-18, an apprenticeship counts as full-time education. It allows you to break into your desired industry, gain qualifications, and get work experience. You’ll be paid for your time at work and for the time spent studying.

How do I find an Apprenticeship?

There are a few ways to find an Apprenticeship. To secure an Apprenticeship, start by finding your own employer. Offer to do work experience, which could lead to an Apprenticeship opportunity. Create a concise CV (no more than two pages) and research the manager/owner of the company for sending your details. We can provide additional information to the employer if needed.

Register for the Talent Bank and attend remote Apprenticeship Information Sessions at East Sussex College via Zoom. We’ll address any questions and keep your details on file for potential vacancies. Check our website regularly for live apprenticeship vacancies linked to real employers: www.escg.ac.uk/ apprenticeships/vacancies/.

Explore live Apprenticeship opportunities on the National Apprenticeship website www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship. Create an account to apply and complete the application form thoroughly, including your qualifications. If you’re 16 - 18, consider applying for a full-time course alongside Apprenticeship applications.

Key facts

Maths & English.

Maths and English Functional Skills will be included alongside the apprenticeship if you don’t have GCSE grades 4 or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills. You will be asked to provide certificates if you do have GCSEs so we can make you exempt. Functional Skills are practical qualifications designed to apply to both your work and personal life.

Earn a salary.

With an apprenticeship you must be paid at least the Minimum National Apprenticeship wage. If you turn 19 in the second year of your apprenticeship, you must then be paid minimum wage for your age.

How long does Apprenticeshipanlast?

College apprenticeships last 1-4 years, depending on the programme and any approved prior learning. You will be employed with a contract lasting at least the apprenticeship duration and cannot be self-employed. As an employee, you will receive holiday pay, sick leave, and statutory employment rights.

Train - debt free!

As an apprentice you will never be asked to pay towards the cost of the qualification. This means that you will never have to take out a student loan, but you will have the benefits of still gaining a formal qualification.

Off-the-job training.

If employed for at least 30 hours per week, six hours will be dedicated to training. This includes day-release to college, compiling your portfolio, written work, assessor meetings, job shadowing, mentoring, competitions, mock assessments, and industry events. You will also be paid for this training.

Gain a qualification.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll receive a certificate confirming your skills, knowledge, and behaviours for your job role. We offer apprenticeships at various levels based on your job responsibilities. Many apprentices start lower and complete multiple apprenticeships, advancing within their company and into higher education.

National Skills courses are also available for applicants who do not already hold a Level 3 qualification.
