Art & Design Why should I study Art & Design? Choosing to study Art & Design means you are a creative thinker. It offers a diverse range of subjects, makes you think ‘outside the box,’ and above all is fascinating. Career paths in

Art & Design are exciting and varied. It is also

multifaceted in employability skills as you will gain skills such as working independently, learning to adapt and problem solving.

Creative art students from East Sussex College are regular winners at the Farley Arts Trust Awards. Last year saw Tia Allen, 18, win the Level 3 Textile award. The College also holds an end of year showcase which displays students’ works in fine art and digital media. This past year, fashion students took part in Eastbourne’s Enterprise Centre Fashion Festival and at the Towner Art Gallery, where they showcased their creations on catwalks. With purpose-built studios and top of the range equipment, we make sure our students

have everything they need to flourish. For photography students, there is a dedicated photography suite with dark room and professional photography studio. Spaces and equipment provided for areas of study such as textiles, furniture design, costume design, printmaking and sculpture are just a few more examples.

MEET BISMA: Bisma Oppal’s end of year arts project stood out for students, teachers and members of the public. Her illustrated account of an immigrant mother’s survival of domestic violence and change was a bold and heartfelt topic.

The art foundation course has given me the chance to fulfill my ideas in the way I wanted them to be. I feel I have become mu more self-confident and have a clear idea about my future.

Business & Law Why should I study Business & Law? Good managers, consultants and administrators are highly sought after in many industries. Hospitals, banks, manufacturing companies and television production (to name a few) all need these types of brains. People who work in these fields think logically, have strong organisational skills and can communicate clearly. Sharpen these skills at college and you will be set to succeed. Our classrooms are comfortable and equipped with all the resources you need to make your learning as clear as possible. And for those days when you are feeling the pressure, stretch your legs out on our campus - with gorgeous surrounding views of the South Downs, what better way to unwind?

MEET JOSH: After undertaking A-levels in Politics, Law, Sociology and AS in Economics, Josh Barbarinde went on to study at the London School of Economics. In 2016 he came up with a successful social enterprise which trains ‘at risk’ youths with employable skills, such as smartphone screen repair. Cracked It Ltd was awarded Social Enterprise of the Year 2018 by the Centre for Social Justice. Josh was also appointed as a trustee on The Shackleton Foundation board.

Care Why should I study Care? Health and social care is an especially broad career sector. Lots of different career paths are available for people from all kinds of academic backgrounds. From nursing and social work to early-years teaching, this industry covers a wide range of vocations and skill-sets.

Our Care students regularly learn outside the classroom. The College has strong links with the District General Hospital, local schools, nurseries and playgroups. On campus, our classrooms are equipped with all the resources you might need - but most importantly with friendly tutors. This past year, among other achievements, a group of East Sussex College Care students volunteered at a local children’s play scheme. Our students organised a healthy eating and themed activity, centered around Eric Carle’s The Hungry Caterpillar story.

MEET OUR STUDENTS: Health & Social Care students took part in a taster day at Eastbourne DGH. Hospital staff were impressed with the capability and pleasant manners of our students and described the event as a ‘huge success’. Our students had an interactive day experiencing midwifery, the skills of a scrub nurse and learned about pathways towards careers in adult nursing. They learned what life is like on a real hospital ward by handling authentic surgical instruments; learning to scrub down and taking part in a realistic mock birth on the maternity ward.

Computing Why should I study Computing? Careers in IT and telecommunications can be incredibly challenging and rewarding. One of the most exciting things about these careers is that they offer employees continuous opportunities for learning. As technologies advance, there are always new skills to acquire. It is also worth noting many IT consultants get the opportunity work remotely from home or in different locations across the world.

Our IT rooms are equipped with the latest technology and plenty of computers to choose from. The College also has a Mac suite, ideal for graphic design students and other digital media studies.

MEET JOSH: Josh Salvage is a SEO Analyst. After completing his BTEC National Certificate at East Sussex College, Josh has had a successful career working for companies, like Brightonbased digital marketing agency, Jellyfish. He now works freelance providing advice, audits and progressing e-commerce revenue for companies in many industries such as in travel, automotive, entertainment and more.

Lukas Ondrej is a former East Sussex College A level student, who went on to graduate with a BSc in Computer Science from King’s College London. He has created and developed a number of education technology ideas, language learning software and apps. In 2016, Lukas won a grant from the JISC Summer of Student Innovation competition which enabled him to create and develop Lingoflow, a web app which helps students learn foreign language vocabulary.

Construction Why should I study Construction? Without the essential work of architects, builders, painters, plasterers, surveyors, plumbers and electricians, we would have nowhere to live, work, watch sporting or music events or be able to cross rivers. Construction industry jobs are plentiful with opportunities for work for local authorities, infrastructure providers, even historic properties.

For each field (carpentry, brickwork, plumbing, painting and decorating and electrics) our students learn in purpose-built workshops. This gives students the room and freedom to practice their trade safely and effectively, as well as prepare them for the real world.

Suki-Rose Stewart (left) won her regional heats and left with a gold medal at the SkillBuild 2018 competition, held in Brighton. Suki, a level 1 learner studying painting and decorating at the Eastbourne campus, took part in the junior competition which consisted of 3 modules which needed completing in 4 hours (each module being marked for accuracy, finish and overall measuring quality) and won gold.

18

MEET BEN: Ben Skinner has always had the travel itch and decided to study carpentry as a means of acquiring a useable skill that he can practice around the world.

I’ve found the course to be a really good experience. You make new friends too when you’re working together.

On the course, Ben helped to build a model home out of wood as well as the huts for Eastbourne’s Christmas market.

Engineering Why should I study Engineering? There are many different areas of engineering to practice, but most engineers tend to specialise in one area, such as chemical, automotive or robotics. Engineering careers are constantly varied in terms of their job responsibilities, but also in their working locations. As an engineer you could be working in an office, in a laboratory, or on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean!

Theory lessons are held in comfortable classrooms while purpose-built workshops which house equipment for mechanical, electrical, electronic and software engineering are a key draw for students interested in studying these subjects.

Motor Vehicle lecturer, Michael Poil, has come up with an ingenious way to showcase the many skills students can learn here at College – he built a Dalek! The shiny black motorised robot was built with trade skills used in fields such as engineering, carpentry and motor vehicle maintenance. The makings of the Dalek began with a wood skeleton, then into a mould to create a fibre glass body and it is soon to become remote control.

English & Languages Why should I study English & Languages? The skills you gain through studying English are marketable in many career areas. Employers such as law firms, banks, schools and advertising companies all require excellent English skills. And if you study a second language, you are hands down much more employable in any industry. Being able to speak a second language also enables you to work abroad.

Our campus has a very inclusive feel, where students and tutors can easily converse on subject matter and mini intellectual debates from classroom to canteen! Fantastic resources and study areas make learning all the more fluid. After completing her A-levels, including English Literature, BelĂŠn Bale (pictured far left of image on the left), went on to study at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. Alongside her studies, BelĂŠn also writes for a number of publications.

MEET IZZI: After college, Izzi Howell (pictured far right) graduated from university with a joint Honours in French & Spanish and is now an editor at a publishing company which produces fact books for children. She is so passionate about the subject, she even came back to East Sussex College to give a pep talk to students on the importance of studying a modern foreign language.

Foundation Learning Why should I study Foundation Learning? Foundation learning offers courses for students who need more individual support to achieve an Entry and Foundation Level qualification. These courses allow students to build on essential skills and general education as well as gain experience in vocational areas.

These courses are great preparation for students who are not yet ready to commit to a full vocational course or to go into employment. Students who feel they have not got the grades they needed at school will be able to take further development in English, Number and Information Technology with different forms and qualifications.

Example project: A recycling initiative visited the college to work with our Foundation Learning students. After discussion and a collaboration of ideas, our students went on to create recycling collection points on campus. Their ideas were put to good use and the scheme has been copied on all of the college campuses.

I chose to come to East Sussex College because I have difficulty in writing and I can get support here. I really enjoy my link course. I attend ‘create your own website’ and hope to work in IT and editing.

Hair & Beauty Why should I study Hair & beauty? This sector is very appealing for those who want to be self employed, perhaps wanting to own their salon, run a freelance business, work overseas or on cruise ships. Many jobs in Hair & Beauty require vocational qualifications or on the job training such as apprenticeships. A creative flare is needed, while at the same time having a head for business.

MEET REBECCA: Rebecca West studied Level 2 in Hair & Beauty and Level 3 Beauty and Make-up Artistry. During her time at College, Rebecca won the UK Skills Level 2 Regional Competition and Silver in the National Final. The following year Rebecca won the Level 3 Gold medal in both the Regional and National Final of the competition. Following her time at College, she now work in a five-star spa as a senior therapist.

26

Our Evolve hair and beauty salons are not just for training purposes, but also working environments with paying clients who come in for beauty treatments, haircuts and hair styling. Students are provided with all the tools and kit they need, such as industry standard sinks, mirrors, dryers and products to develop beauty therapy, hairdressing and grooming skills.

The end of year sees Hair & Beauty students showcase their skills at an annual college show. It is a fantastic opportunity to let students’ talent shine. Last year’s underwater theme wowed the audience. After the showcase, an awards ceremony is held to recognise the top makeup and hair stylists of the class.

Hospitality & Catering Why should I study Hospitality & Catering? Jobs in the catering and hospitality trade are all about providing friendly, efficient and attentive customer service. Consequently, excellent communication skills, patience and a friendly nature are essential for you to thrive in these industries. Careers can vary greatly, for example you could go on to become a chef, event manager, baker, bar person or catering manager.

We make sure that our catering students train in a real life working kitchen, with all the requisite cooking utensils, machines and gadgets. Our dedicated Catering & Hospitality centre boasts an industry standard working kitchen, real restaurant, Italian coffee machines with cafe and bar, plus lockers, showers and change rooms.

During his Level 2 course Ben Addems competed in several cooking competitions, including the 2018 Tabasco Hot Chef Challenge where got to through to the finals and cooked on a stage at Hotel Olympia. He has gone on to work at Heston Blumenthal’s leading restaurant, The Fat Duck, and now cooks fine dining dishes in Portugal.

MEET JACOB: From a young age Jacob was interested in food, helping his mum with baking and watching cooking programmes. At secondary school he chose to do Food Tech GCSE which led to his Level 1 at East Sussex College. Jacob has now completed Level 1 to 3 in cookery.

“I’m very happy wit my training from East Sussex College. It was a natural progression for me from Level 1 to 3. Learning the basics is so important. I love cooking complex dishes, but chefs have got to learn the basics. What happ ens if your fancy equipment breaks down? You need to know how to use a whisk and bowl.”

Jacob plans to work full time as a chef this year with intentions to go to France to gain more experience in the patisserie trade.

Humanities Why should I study Humanities? Humanities courses aim to provide a varied approach to understanding people and the world around us; they do this through the study of art, social structures and other forms of cultural expression. Practically every field, from art to management contains people whose background is in humanities.

Whether inside the classroom, out on field trips or on a trip abroad, Humanities subjects are taught in engaging and exciting ways - with real world examples and plenty of discussion! Bring your curiosity and imagination and see the world through the eyes of great philosophers, explorers, historical figures and politicians.

M E E T N ATA S H A : Alumna, Natasha Colyer launched her online lifestyle guide, seeninthecity.co.uk in 2014. Her website has become a ‘go to’ site for the latest reviews on style, travel, Brighton and London city life. With a team of 12 contributors, Natasha covers stories on trends in fashion, fitness, travel, new restaurants and more. The business has allowed her to meet interesting people including fashion designers, West End stars and singers.

MEET JAMES: Maths is, among many other fields, an integral part of architecture. James Thompson is an East Sussex College alumni and now a successful architect. In 2015 he was honoured by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) by winning the RIBA South/ South East Award.

Mathematics Why should I study Mathematics? Studying maths helps us find patterns and structure in our lives. It helps you develop skills in logical thinking, problemsolving and decision-making, which are valued by employers across many job sectors, for example, the petroleum and nuclear industries, medicine and health, IT, business consultancy and operational research.

Our classrooms are equipped with all the resources students need to learn effectively. For private study, our learning centres provide quiet spaces for study as well as provide easy access to resources and research materials. Understanding maths is beneficial for you even if you do not see yourself as a maths-minded person. Many students find that when they study maths alongside their chosen field, their comprehension of other subjects is better. For example, fashion design

Call 030 300 39699 to chat to someone about your options

requires a healthy dose of maths, particularly geometry, algebra and arithmetic for pattern cutting and scaling sizes. Carpentry is another profession which requires a solid understanding of maths. Maths is also essential for all branches of science. And on a practical level, we want our students (who will all be entering adulthood) to feel confident in maths for daily life such as affordability of lifestyle, rent, car fees – being able to balance your in goings and outgoings is very important!

Media & Film Why should I study Media & Film? Studies in this sector can open many doors. A mix of creativity and technology is present in most careers, with constant opportunities to develop trends, practice visual arts and create new ideas and themes. The sky’s the limit when it comes to the opportunities available in the media sector.

MEET OSCAR: For digital studies, it is important to learn on the latest technology. This is why the College frequently upgrades equipment. Our Mac suite is a favourite learning space for digital media students, which is located in Eversley House. Studying Media, Film and Digital Media can lead to an exciting career. Alumnus, Troy Hyde is now a successful graphic designer who has worked as head graphic designer at Ted Baker, senior designer for Nokia, and as a graphic designer for Dalziel And Pow.

Whilst studying Media Production at college, Oscar Williams particularly enjoyed the challenge of working with business clients on live briefs as it made projects more relevant and useful. These projects included the College produced TAG Magazine and Eastbourne Youth Radio. Oscar says:

Knowing that people in the real world are going to see your work is always really atisfying.

Since leaving college, Oscar has gone on to study Television Production at Southampton Solent University and has been working at music festivals filming bands such as Kaiser Chiefs, Paloma Faith and M.I.A. He is working towards the goal of working in outside broadcasting for live events and sport. Photo credit (above): Kirsty McKeon

MEET LYNDON: Alumnus, Lyndon Robertson now works for Rolls Royce UK. He returned to our motor vehicle workshops last year to chat to current students about what the job entails and how they should prepare for a career in the Motor Vehicle industry. He brought along a very shiny Rolls Royce Wraith as well!

Motor Vehicle Why should I study Motor Vehicle? Working as an automotive engineer means you will be responsible for the mechanical, electrical, electronic and software engineering aspects of motor vehicles. It is a varied line of work and a good trade to have for those who wish to be self-employed.

The setting for this area of learning is our purposebuilt motor vehicle workshop which houses equipment for all autobody work. Theory lessons are held in comfortable classrooms.

36

The automotive industry is a fun, fast and challenging line of work. And it is not just for boys. There are now more female automotive learners and apprentices in a traditionally male-led workforce than ever before. With each year, more women join this industry, with many working up the ladder to land management jobs at some of the top automotive companies around the world.

Performing Arts & Music Why should I study Performing Arts & Music? Many different skills are needed for all the careers found in music and performing arts, but you can’t do it without passion. If you love the arts there are jobs for you out there. Keep in mind that having a passion and using intelligent thought to make something visible or audible means you have abilities and skills which are transferable and sought after in many industries, not just the arts.

Our specialist facilities for the arts and music include 8 professionally equipped recording studios, Mac computers, a performance stage, cutting edge audiovisual technology and ICT facilities. Our black-box theatre space and large dance studio are ideal for your ideas to come to life in practice and production.

East Sussex College musicians also performed at Ardingly’s agricultural show, Spring Live. Over 16,000 people visited the two-day event, many stopping to watch performances by acts such as singer songwriter Jack Buster Weston; Pianjo & Co; soon-tobe pop sensation, Morgan M James and soulful songstress, Cat Rose.

Pianjo & Co, made up of six students studying the PreProfessional Music course run by East Sussex Academy of Music, played at the Music for Youth School Proms at the Royal Albert Hall last November.

Our students are encouraged to showcase their work and often feature in productions and concerts throughout the year on campus and off campus.

Science Why should I study Science? Careers in science are genuinely some of the most exciting, interesting and significant out there. Jobs in science stretch to many areas with niche specialisms: astrophysics, marine biology, zoological sciences and pharmacology. Expertise in science gives you the ability to work in industries which help people and improve people’s (or animals’) lives - think cancer research, prosthesis engineering and genetic studies.

Clean and well-equipped labs are essential to develop your understanding of biology and chemistry. Our classrooms and laboratories are spacious and tidy, perfect for developing your scientific thought. Many of our science students progress onto prestigious Russell Group universities and often even further onto Masters and PHD programmes covering a wide range of subjects from Molecular Biology to Criminal Psychology and Forensic Science.

From sports coach to physiotherapist, studying sport and fitness can be very beneficial for those with a keen interest in this field. You can make a huge difference to people’s lives, whether with young athletes, or adults needing health advice.

The facilities for sports studies are some of the best in the region. Sports students will have access to our custombuilt sports hall, full use of our 400m athletics track and all weather sports pitches. Tennis courts, astro-turf, football fields and gym are also on site.

Work Experience Work experience is an integral part of our study programmes. It provides an insight into working for a local or national business and gives students a glimpse of the real working industry outside of what is taught in the classroom.

All subject areas include a work experience placement from vocational subjects such as Brickwork and Hairdressing, to subjects such as Law and Business. Industry experience comes in many forms, for example Law students will have the chance to compete in the Bar National Mock Trial Competition and Health & Social Care students will spend a week in placements at hospitals, nursing homes, primary schools or day care centres.

Our campuses have helpful staff on hand to provide information on employability skills and work experience opportunities. Teachers also have industry contacts and will create work experience opportunities for keen students. Course leader in Health & Social Care/Early Years, Carol Tompsett, explains how invaluable work placements are:

Call 030 300 39699 to chat to someone about your options

“Work placements bring the theories we learn in class to life and enable students to use and apply practical ‘real life experiences.’ One of my students recently completed a work placement in a hospital and has secured a coveted place on the new nurse associate course at Brighton.”

SKILL UP; MATHS & ENGLISH You may think that you’re done with Maths and English once you’ve finished your GCSEs, but your results in these subjects will determine the level at which you start studying at College. High grades in these two subjects are also highly sought after by employers and universities. If you haven’t achieved a grade 4/C or above in Maths and English, then you will study these subjects alongside your College courses. Exactly how much you study will depend on the level of your course, previous experience and qualifications, as well as any support needs you might have. Maths and English are relevant to all courses and future employment opportunities.

SHORT SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

EXPLORER Aiming for a vocational course, but missing the grade profile you need for a Level 2 programme? You can still come to college to study a range of vocational courses at Level 1, to ensure you are prepared for the next steps. The Explorer Programme offers units in a number of vocational areas which are combined to enable you to achieve a diploma or certificate in vocational studies, and provide you with a chance to try out a subject before applying for a full programme in that area.
