Eastbourne is known as the ‘Sunshine Coast’, as it regularly tops the charts as the UK town with the most sunshine hours in any given year. And given that sunshine equates to Vitamin D - the happy hormone - we’re always cheerful and smiling. Just like Eastbourne town centre, we’re undergoing somewhat of a resurgence. We’re investing in our campus facilities, we’re improving our equipment and machinery, and focusing on innovation. Expert tutors Our staff are fully-trained in their subject area, often with an exciting work background in the industry they teach. This provides contacts and links to the industry, meaning you get the chance to work with employer-led briefs and get valuable work experience (More on that to come later on!) Our Art students have designed marketing material for Medi Tech Trust, held exhibitions at Charleston Farmhouse, and submitted work in the annual Royal Opera House Design Challenge, with winning entrants in each of the past six years! As well as giving you the best learning experience our tutors are also able to help you get your foot in the door with potential new employers and line up interviews once you finish college.

We are an important part of the community We love our community and like to think that we play an important role in making Eastbourne a great place to live, study, and play. We often host or support a number of community events such as awards nights, Christmas markets, gala dinners, SciFi conventions, and political debates. Each year, our catering students select a local charity to support and raise money for throughout the year. In the past, fundraising activities have included cream tea afternoons, Christmas dinners, and seven-course Valentine’s Day meals. Other things in the area we’ve been involved in that you may not know: Eastbourne’s town centre Christmas Market features log cabins built by our construction students and our Catering department provides pancakes at the annual Charity Pancake Race! We can also be found at Eastbourne’s International Air show, Airborne, albeit on the ground. The start of this summer event often ties in with A-Level Results Day for students.

Sporting excellence

Our fantastic facilities in Eastbourne make our sports courses a popular choice. Indoor sports such as Tennis, Badminton, Basketball and Netball, and coaching sessions are run in the sports hall which is owned and run by Wave Leisure. Other facilities include a healthy complement of track and field facilities such as a 400metre running track, long jump, and discus net. We also have sports fields for competitive football and rugby, and a 3G all-weather pitch.

We have a whole building dedicated to our Art, Design and Creative subjects. We have an array of equipment and materials for you to use including printing presses, pottery wheels, and photography studios. Our Macs and PCs are installed with the most up to date adobe software, and 3D digital design software.

Industry placements

The perfect location

Gaining experience in the workplace is an integral part of our courses. This hands-on experience helps to bring your learning to life and demonstrates to employers that you are able to carry out the tasks that you’re being taught in class. We work with some amazing local and national employers (see page 20 for a full list!).

It’s not just our Media students who use the seaside town for their film projects. Eastbourne is a popular filming location, having featured in blockbuster movies including Harry Potter, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Pearl Harbour, and TV shows including Top Gear and That Mitchell & Webb Look.

Award-winning students If you dream it, then you can be it. This is the college ethos and something our tutors are here to support you with. You will be encouraged to take part in local and national competitions relevant to your course. Our students studying construction or beauty therapy vocational courses are often entered into - and win competitions including WorldSkills and UK Skills.

Our Creative Media students have assisted on video shoots with artists including chart-topping band Toploader, broadcast their own radio shows, received newsroom training with BBC reporters and showcased their work in local cinemas. Student artwork and photography has also been displayed at local venues including the railway station and Towner Art Gallery.

Beauty Therapy alumni Rebecca West competed in the WorldSkills competition, and represented Great Britain in the finals held in Russia 2019!

Since merging to become East Sussex College we have been able to offer the widest range of academic and vocational courses in the whole of the South East. As we mentioned earlier, Eastbourne is the place to go if you’re looking to study vocational and technical qualifications. If you have an idea about the types of subjects you’d like to explore further at university or start to work in, then you’ll be able to do that with us. We have a range of artistic and creative subjects such as Art and Design, Creative Media, Computing, and Music. You will be able to learn the key skills you need to be able to care for people or educate the next generation with our Health, Child, and Social Care courses. You’ll be able to explore health, exercise, fitness and the protective services with our range of Sport and Public Services courses. You can learn the skills you need to start your career in the construction, engineering or motor vehicle industries. Or you can explore the world of business, commerce, and consumer services by studying Business, Travel and Tourism, Hospitality and Catering, Hair, Beauty, or Make-Up Artistry.

Our campus shot... in a snap A huge LRC Sometimes you just need a quiet space to buckle down and focus. That’s why we have designed our campus to have accessible Learning Resource Centre and this one is huge. There are literally thousands of books, magazines, and journals in there so you will always be able to find the information you’re looking for. There are lots of computers and quiet study pods, as well as friendly and super helpful staff who are on hand to point you in the right direction for assignment research, referencing and proofreading.

Our students always tell us how our campus gives them the freedom and independence to learn and it gets them ready for their next steps into employment or university. A pioneering Creative Hub After the successful launch of our Creative Hub at our Lewes campus, we will be developing a Creative Hub in Eastbourne. The Hub will give ‘Creatives’ the opportunity to work on live briefs from real clients to enhance their learning. Students from across a range of the college’s subjects, which could include Art & Design, Computing & IT, Business, and depending on the brief may include others, are able to come together to work and create products and services for our local business partners. This could range from a website to the promotion of a sports event.

Eastbourne campus is really easy to get to...

Hampden Park train station is the closest train station to us and is about a 10-minute walk away. Direct trains pass through Hampden Park very regularly from Brighton, Lewes, and Polegate and come from Ashford, Rye, Hastings, Bexhill, and Pevensey and Westham.

There are also plenty of direct buses that arrive on campus from Eastbourne town centre and the surrounding areas. We have plenty of parking spaces available for cars, mopeds and push bikes.

Students’ Union

College will be a very memorable and important part of your life. You’ll spend two or three years working towards gaining your qualification(s), however, college isn’t just about studying. You’ll be able to develop yourself as a person, gaining all the soft interpersonal skills you need in order to succeed by getting involved with activities outside of the classroom- you’ll also develop your social skills and have loads of fun too!

Run by the students, for the students! Our Student Union is run by our elected Student President who partakes in committee meetings with our Governors and Principal. The Union works to improve all aspects of college life for all students. Whether that’s through social events, political campaigns or raising awareness for local or national issues. If you feel you want to be more proactive within the Union, then you could stand for an executive role on the committee, including Student Governor. This is a great opportunity where you get to build up confidence and develop various skills in teamwork, leadership and organisation. You will help our students have a great time at college, giving a first-hand insight into the experience of being a student.

Sports Academies If you love to play sports then we have a thriving sports academy in Eastbourne. You’ll be given plenty of time outside of you lessons to train and practise, then have Wednesday afternoons for competitive matches. We offer men’s and women’s football, rugby, and netball. So no matter what subjects you’re studying, you can join one of our academies. Popular extracurricular activities also include windsurfing, sea swimming, paddle boarding, hill walking and cycling, thanks to the seaside location and nearby South Downs.

Things happen all-year-round We have a jam-packed calendar of events once you become an ESC student. During the first couple of weeks of term we have our freshers events giving you the chance to get to know your fellow students, sign up for the sports academies and societies, and have some fun at our freshers welcome party. Various events take place throughout the Autumn up until Christmas such as Vegan Festival and Christmas markets. Then into the new year we regularly host fundraising and charity events, relaxation and stress busting days. After your exams have finished and you’ve handed in your coursework, we throw the biggest end of year party in the form of our smash-hit college festivals. UK rapper, EO; X Factor’s Amelia Lily; and Love Island duo Sam Bird and Adam Collard, have all performed in Eastbourne helping students to start their summer in style.

Working abroad

In 2017, we secured funding to enable our students to undertake a four-week industry experience trip in Seville, Spain. Ever since, we have been sending groups of students from across our college curriculum to the sunny Spanish city to work as chefs in tapas bars, reception staff in hotels, and giving tourists guided Segway tours of the city.

What is Further Education (FE)? FE refers to post secondary school education and encompasses A-Levels, BTECs, apprenticeships and other vocational courses as well as Foundation Learning.

How can I help my child decide on the right course for them? There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College and we can help your child with that choice, looking at their predicted grades, their interests and preferred ways of learning. Can I visit the college before my child applies? We hold a number of open evenings throughout the year at each of our campuses. This is your chance to explore the college, check out the facilities on offer and meet course tutors and current students.

How does my child apply to college? Your child can easily apply to ESC online, by post (application form included in this prospectus) or in person. We accept applications until September. Your child can apply for more than one course and have more than one interview. On receipt of your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s application, an interview date is sent out. At the interview, we make sure your child has chosen the right course for them and provide details about the course or programme. Parents are encouraged to attend.

What happens at the start of college? The induction period is there to make the transition from school to college as easy as possible. It ensures your child is on the right programme, settling into college life and creating excellent relationships with their peers and tutors. For term dates please visit www.escg.ac.uk

What support is available for my child at college? When your son/daughter starts college they will be allocated a personal tutor. This will be the key contact for you and your child during their time at college. Many students require additional support while they study with us. Our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team helps students with learning difficulties and disabilities, and can assist with the transition from school to college, in-class support, assistive technology and more.

Usually an offer is made with conditions such as GCSE grade requirements. Occasionally a referral will be made to consider alternative options. Instructions, learner support and enrolment details will be sent to you during the summer holidays about what to do on and after GCSE results day.

What financial support is available? Tuition and exam fees are free for learners aged 1618. However, you may need to pay for equipment and materials relevant to the course. If you are aged 19 and over, there will be a course fee. Financial help is available including bursaries, travel grants and discounts, Care to Learn grants and Discretionary Learner Support. What are A-Levels?

Tutorial System

Advanced Level qualifications, better known as A-Levels, are two year courses that are perfect for helping you get into university. You’ll be able to choose three subjects to study and you will usually be assessed by exams. Our A-Level programme follows the linear structure which means your exams will be at the end of your two years, rather than at the end of each module or year.

A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work and we realise that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When you enrol with us you will be assigned a tutor. They will be aligned with the subject you have chosen and be able to give you expert support and guidance with those subjects.

Academic Support We can provide academic support in the form of study and revision workshops. These enable you to focus on developing your skills and knowledge of your subject and take place throughout the year and more regularly as we approach exams season.

UCAS Application Support If your goal is to head to university after A-Levels then we’ll be able to support you with your UCAS application. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to help you with each step of the process, from setting up your account to writing and refining your personal statement.

Outstanding Opportunities... We also offer you the chance to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ is a Level 3 qualification that is worth half an A-Level and will help to boost your UCAS application and develop your knowledge in a particular area of interest. You can choose a topic, carry out research, and then write either a 5,000 word essay or create a ‘product’ and write a 1,000 word essay, followed by a short presentation. The skills you’ll develop as a result of doing an EPQ, such as project planning, decision making, record keeping, evaluation, presenting are invaluable in most jobs and uni courses. As a guide an A* in the EPQ is worth roughly 70 UCAS points, an A 60, B 50 and so on.

Learn outside the classroom Your learning will also take place outside of the classroom with a number of work experience opportunities, guest talks, and trips. Each year you’ll be able to take advantage of our excellent links with local and national employers to gain valuable work experience in an area related to your studies. In the past, students have worked for accountancy Work firms, marketing departments, in experience, local hospitals, with local news outlets guest talks and in print, TV and radio, and worked industry trips with lawyers and solicitors. These opportunities not only give you valuable hands-on experience, it also looks great on your CV and UCAS application. We often welcome university lecturers and industry experts into the college to give talks about their jobs, their industry, and to give you an insight into what the industry might look like in the future. We also give you the opportunity to get involved with lots of trips throughout the year. We put on coaches to the UCAS fairs in London and Brighton so you can find out more about university courses up and down the country. Our subject areas also organise course related trips throughout the year. Our students often visit the capital to experience the Law courts, parliament, banks, marketing agencies, and tourist attractions.

We’re all in it together We have a cosy little sixth form that has fantastic progression rates - giving our students the opportunity to move onto the things they want to do next - including their first choice university, starting an apprenticeship, or venturing off into the world of work. Our students always tell us how friendly and welcoming our sixth form is. It is a place where they’re able to meet new life-long friends and they are able to mature and gain independence. The feel of the large, modern building, the interaction with the tutors, and the in-depth subject knowledge is the perfect stepping stone to university.

It’s not all work, work, work! As we mentioned earlier, there are plenty of activities for you to get involved with outside of the classroom. Whether it is joining one of our sports academies, becoming a student rep, or starting your own club or society there is plenty to keep you busy.

So how do you choose your A-Level subjects? Some of the best advice we’ve ever heard is to plan backwards. Work out a rough plan of what job you’d like to have in ten years. From there you can look into the details of whether you’d need a degree to do this, and the subjects you need to study at A-Level to get you onto that degree.

Play to your strengths There is nothing wrong with studying the subjects your good at. If you’re predicted 8s and 9s in English, then perhaps consider taking A-Level English Language & Literature.

Don’t get bored The linear structure means that you’ll study A-Levels for two years. So it’s sensible to choose three subjects that you’re going to enjoy and maintain your interest in right up until the end.

Do your uni research As well as researching the courses you want to study at uni, find out about the courses they offer and discover what entry requirements you’ll need to get in. You’ll also be able to find out what facilities they have, what the student lifestyle is like, and whether you’d like to study there.

Facilitating subjects If you’re the type of person that likes to keep their options open, then perhaps facilitating subjects could be a good option. Many of the top universities look for facilitating subjects such as Geography, History, Physics, or French, because they equip you with critical thinking skills, the ability to research data, analyse data, and you are able to demonstrate your ability to learn and retain information.

During this two year course you will be encouraged to develop a critical view of the world and question some of the opinions and stereotypes that exist in society. After Your A-Levels University The popular route for many students after completing their A-Levels is to study at university. Students go on to study subjects that are related to the ones they have studied at college, or take the opportunity to specialise in a subject, for instance Sports Journalism, Architecture, or Sound Production. Once you have applied, the university will make you a conditional offer to their course, based on your predicted grades at the time you apply. Once you have opened your A-Level results, and you meet the conditional offer, you will then be able to accept their offer.

Employment You may feel that you’re ready to start earning a salary and begin working full-time after A-Levels. Lots of our past students have opted for full-time work rather than uni or an apprenticeship, and this may be right for you too. You will have gained Advanced Level qualifications in three subjects, showing that you are able to learn and retain information. You may be able to find fulltime positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject you have studied, even thanks to their work experience placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, galleries, accountancy firms, solicitors, and language schools.

Apprenticeship You may decide that university isn’t for you, but you’d still like to learn more about a particular subject, gaining valuable work experience in that area. Since a few changes were made to apprenticeships, more students are finishing their A-Levels and are turning to this work-based qualification.

What are T-Levels? T-Levels are brand new technical study programmes and are set to become one of the three major options available to you after finishing your GCSEs, alongside A-Levels and Apprenticeships. Just like A-Levels, you will study your chosen T-Level for two years and at the end of the course, you can achieve the equivalent of three A-Levels. T-Levels offer you the chance to study one subject in detail, focusing on core elements that will underpin your knowledge, concepts and skills in your chosen industry. You will then have the opportunity to study a specialised set of skills, before undertaking an industry placement with an employer, which will last for a minimum of 315 hours, which is roughly 45 working days. T-Levels have been developed by the government, alongside employers, to teach you the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours to get you ready for work in the roles and positions that employers need you to fill.

The Design, Surveying and Planning T-Level will develop your knowledge and understanding in a range of core elements that will underpin your learning in this industry. You will be given a context to the industry, learn the key concepts and theories in design, surveying and planning, and develop the skills you need to do the job. You will then have the opportunity to specialise in one of these areas depending on your interest: â&#x20AC;˘ Surveying and design for construction and the built environment

Digital Technology - You will learn about existing and new digital technology and how it can be used in construction such as computeraided design, simulation, and animation. Relationship Management - You will learn the importance of creating good working relationships with others which includes teamwork, methods and styles of communication, and customer service principles.

â&#x20AC;˘ Building services design You will undertake your industry placement and be given an employer-set project to work on which requires you to demonstrate your learning in response to an employer-set brief. Your English, maths, and digital skills will also be enhanced throughout the two years. Design - You will discover the benefits of good design, not only whether the product is fit for purpose but also with budgetary constraints. The Digital Production T-Level will develop your knowledge and understanding in a range of core elements that will underpin your learning in this industry. You will be given a context to the industry, learn the key concepts and theories in digital production, design, and development, and develop the skills you need to do the job.

Digital Environments - You will learn more about computing systems including physical, virtual and cloud, you will understand the landscape of network connectivity, and understand concepts such as SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (platform as a service) and IaaS (infrastructure as a Service).

You will then have the opportunity to learn more in-depth knowledge and skills within the subject to help specialise in a number of areas including troubleshooting, how to design, implement and test software, and how to change, maintain and support software.

Security - You will learn about the importance of maintaining privacy and confidentiality, understand processes and protocols used to ensure internet security, and gain an understanding of threats and vulnerabilities such as Botnets, Hacking, Malware, Phishing, and Spam.

You will undertake your industry placement and be given an employer-set project to work on which requires you to demonstrate your learning by combining your core knowledge and skills to develop a substantial piece of work in response to an employer-set brief. Your English, maths, and digital skills will also be enhanced throughout the two years. Core elements you will learn include: Business Context - You’ll be able to understand and learn the value of Digital to businesses, understand technical changes to digital systems and these may affect a business, and understand the risks including privacy, non-compliance, and security. Apprenticeship You may wish to continue learning in which case an apprenticeship would be a seamless transition. Our courses are endorsed by local businesses! We have fantastic links and relationships with lots of local businesses who have endorsed our courses. We have been working closely with them to ensure the knowledge and skills we are teaching you are the ones that they are looking for.

You may hear many different terms or names used to describe vocational qualifications, such as professional and technical, but essentially they are more hands-on and usually very practical.

Within each family you will be able to find your specialism. One of the key benefits to this structure is that you will be able to learn core skills that are transferable across the whole career family - no matter what specialism you choose.

They will involve learning in real situations, such as cutting real client’s hair in the college salon or cooking for paying customers in the college restaurant, all helping to get you ready for a specific job.

Business Level 2 Course Code: E6475/010 To join this course you will need to have a minimum four grade 3(D) to 9(A*) at GCSE. This course will give you a solid overview of how businesses operate. You will study business functions such as marketing and communications, finance for business, and customer service. It will help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to work in the business sector. Once you have completed this course you can progress onto Level 3, start an apprenticeship or move into employment.

HAIR & BEAUTY COURSES There are over 42,000 hairdressing, barbering, and beauty businesses in the UK, employing around 260,000 people. In 2016 the industry generated almost £7.5bn for the UK economy. Our hair, barbering, beauty and make-up courses will give you the opportunity to learn the essential skills you need to cut hair and perform beauty treatments. You will be able to gain valuable experience in our commercial hair and beauty salons as we welcome real paying clients in for treatments. Our brand new salons, situated in ECAT House, are fitted with styling

If you get below four grade 3(D) - 1(G) at GCSE or didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get any formal qualifications after leaving school you can start a Level 1 course. If you enjoy making people look and feel great, have a creative flair and enjoy meeting and working with people then this is the course for you. This course will introduce you to the basic elements of hair and beauty including hair styling and dressing, braiding, manicure and pedicure, skin care and make up application. Beauty Therapy Level 2 Course Code: E5034/020 To join this course you will need to have a minimum four grade 3(D) - 9(A*) at GCSE. If you love the idea of making people feel good and look their best, a job in the beauty therapy industry could be perfect for you. During this course you will be given a thorough introduction to the industry and learn all about the latest beauty treatments, including manicures, pedicures, make-up application, and waxing. Our beauty salons are open to the general public, so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get first-hand experience of working with real clients using industry standard products and equipment, as well as developing your customer service and teamwork skills through reception duties. Once you have completed this course you can move onto the Level 3 Beauty Therapy course or join our Complementary Therapies course.

Building on your knowledge from previous study you will be able to go deeper into the theory behind beauty treatments and be introduced to more advanced techniques. You will be able to understand the ageing process and learn how to perform anti-ageing face and body treatments, you will be able to care for certain skin conditions, and learn more advanced hair removal techniques. You will train in a range of body massage techniques, how to carry out spray and cream tanning, and gain a commercial understanding for running a salon, including planning and implementing promotional events. I’ve learned how to work under pressure in a professional kitchen and create dishes in my lessons. During our restaurant opening hours I’ve also had the chance to see what it was like working in a real business. I very much enjoyed working in Front of House too. General Vehicle Maintenance Entry Level Course Code: E5703/040 If you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get any formal qualifications after leaving school to start this course. The motor trade is huge diverse industry with a wealth of opportunities and employment options; you may want to be a motorsport engineer, working for a race team; or a motor mechanic involved in diagnostics, or electronics. You could be a light service technician, a fitter or a breakdown engineer. You could work in sales or in design, testing, production or restoration. The choice is yours! Preparation for Motor Vehicle Industry Level 1 Course Code: E6298/010 If you get below four grade 3(D) - 1(G) at GCSE or didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get any formal qualifications after leaving school you can start a Level 1 course. During this course you will gain a thorough introduction to the motor vehicle industry. During this specialist course you will be able to learn and develop practical skills in removing and fitting motor vehicle body panels and minor body panel repairs. You will learn how to weld, MIG braze and use plasma cutters to industry standards. You will broaden and deepen your knowledge of metal finishes, health and safety, and good housekeeping in the automotive environment.

You will enhance your knowledge in areas such as braking systems, engine servicing, suspension operation, and checks for condition and operation. Once you have finished the course you may start working full-time in the industry or other popular routes include starting an apprenticeship.

We have a whole building dedicated to our creative subjects, In Eversley house you will find spacious art studios, equipped with everything you need to explore your subject. We have printing presses, a broadcasting desk, and the latest adobe software for digital work. I was able to focus on an area of design that really interests me, learning more about how customers interact and understand a product you are selling. During my time at ESC I have had several on and offsite work experience opportunities. I have been a part of the college fashion show, for 2 years in a row, as the photographer. I have run workshops for students in schools to learn professional media equipment and I was an onstage photographer for ESC MiniFest where I was able to photograph EO and Reggie Yates. Work experience is an important aspect of this course and so for my first year I spent 6 weeks at The Graphic Design House in Portsmouth where I learnt how the print industry is run and redesigned some of their previous work using new techniques I had learnt. The music department features a range of recording studios, Mac Suites and a Live Performance space which are all jam packed with industry standard equipment enabling you make and create your own music as part of your course. This course is designed to enable access to Level 3 Music Performance and Production by offering a variety of experiences in music performance, music recording, song-writing and music business. This is a very practical course where you will get to perform songs, record a variety of instruments and sounds and create your own music. The wider skills that you will be developing will also help you progress and be successful in further study and work. You will be working with other people so will develop communication skills, time management skills, ICT skills which are vital within this sector. Once you have completed this course you will be ready to progress onto the Level 3 course.

This advanced course will prepare you for employment in the music industry, self employment, or progression to higher education. CARE COURSES The Health and Social Care sector is one of the largest employment sectors in the UK and includes a wide range of roles, taking place within hospitals, care homes, nursing homes, hospices and dental practices. The industry contributes £46.2 billion to the economy and represents 6% of total employment in the UK. Our Care Services pathway consists of courses in Health and Social Care which gives you the opportunity to learn a diverse range of skills in one of the most important industries in the country. You will learn key knowledge, practical skills, and behavioural qualities that will prepare you for careers in roles ranging from youth work to dentistry. Practical learning is a key part of our Health and Social Care courses which is why we give you the chance to undertake meaningful industry placements. There is the

opportunity to complete up to 175 hours worth of work placement within a huge range of industry settings such as Special Educational Needs Schools, Day-care centres, GP surgeries, Care homes and residential homes. We work very closely with our neighbours, Eastbourne General Hospital, to provide you with work experience opportunities within one of the UK’s biggest employers, the NHS. You also have the opportunity to see your theoretical learning come to life during a range of industry trips, visits, and talks.

For example you will be able to visit the Body Works exhibition in London to enhance your knowledge in anatomy and physiology. Our classrooms are comfortable and well resourced with a range of subject specific equipment for you to learn with. Our tutors are highly qualified and have years of experience in the industry. Some have practised in health, some psychology and others specialise in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

The industry is dominated by women and it is thought that men only make up 2% of the workforce. I love passing on my experience and testing boundaries. Each year we travel to Budapest to see the practises over in Hungary. We went to the famous (PETO) institute that cares for children with Cerebral Palsy, went to a Mental Health Institute that believes in communities helping with mental health illness, and went to an orphanage that I had been following for over 30 years - the students were blown away by it!

PUBLIC SERVICES COURSES The Public Services play a vital role in the welfare and safety of people here in the UK and abroad, on the front-line and behind the scenes. There are 5.36 million people employed in the public sector across the UK. Of this figure, there are 122,000 Police Officers, 146,000 people in the Armed Forces, 30,100 Firefighters and 26,000 Paramedics. Our Public Services courses will teach you everything you need to know about the uniformed public services and help you to become an independent thinker and problem solver - two skills that are vital for this industry. We have a fantastic range of purpose-built facilities on site and we’re surrounded by a stunning natural landscape. We have sports pitches, a sports hall and running and athletics facilities which you’ll be able to use to learn more about exercise, fitness requirement, and health and lifestyle. We’re very active in the community too. We often visit local schools

to help with their events and we manage Safety in Action Week. We go to RAF stations, take part in adventure activities, and experience custody centres and Police stations in the town. You will also have the opportunity to be part of training sessions with local public services such as Police riot training, and climb ladders and use the blackout equipment to simulate a real fire at the East Sussex Fire and Rescue. Your learning will also be enhanced during visits and talks from local organisations and personnel such as the Navy

Police who are able to talk about what it’s like to be on a ship or the police officer of a naval base. We also travel abroad each year so you can experience different cultures. In the past we have been to the AuschwitzBirkenau concentration camps in Poland. All of our tutors are experts in the public services and can teach from direct experience in the police force, emergency services, military and air force. This means they done the job and know what it takes to make it in the industry.

During this course you will study units incorporating both practical and theoretical elements. During this advanced course you will build your practical skills and theoretical knowledge of the public services through a range of classroom study, activities and field trips. This will include topics such as government, policies and the public services, citizenship, and health and fitness. You will also build on your interpersonal and communication skills and learn how to be an effective team player - an essential skill in any public service. The Public Services are really stressful jobs and you need to be able to respond in a crisis! You will need to respond and not react. Managing your own state is key, which is why we will teach you to be brave and courageous. If you’re planning on joining one of these services and you are the first on scene, you’ll need to be able to think quickly and keep calm under pressure.

We have a range of specialist courses that have been designed to help you gain the qualifications you need to progress on to our college courses, help you re-engage with education, or help you to build confidence and independence - gaining some valuable skills for life. Personal Progress Course Code: E3796160 Our Personal Progress programme focuses on developing your level of independence, personal and social development, as well as Maths and English skills, to help you work towards living independently, making a contribution to the local community, and supported or paid employment. You will benefit from a project based approach, developing skills through planning and taking part in events, Horticulture, Media, Arts and Crafts, and Catering and Hospitality projects. You will be able to take part in trips out into the local community, using local facilities such as public transport, leisure centres and supermarkets. Project Search Course Code: E5459010 Project Search is a supported employment initiative for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. There is an emphasis on collaboration between the college and networks of tutors, job coaches, job developers and business leaders who all help you to gain paid employment. The course is based at The Eastbourne Hospital which will give you the opportunity to complete three 10-week rotations in different hospital departments so that you can explore a variety of job and career paths. During the 30 weeks you will be able to gain a range of key employability skills, as well as independence, confidence, and self esteem, to help you progress into paid employment after the course.

We are a supported employment project for those who want to find paid work, are aged 18-24, and have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).

Prince’s Trust Course Code: 4690/030 Our Prince’s Trust ‘Team’ Programme is a 14week personal development course perfect for you if you are aged between 16-25, and not currently in full-time employment, education or training. The course is designed to build your self-confidence, independence and skills, along with CV writing, interview and employability skills. You will also be given support and guidance during, and after the course, to help you find opportunities in work, education and training. You will also get to go on an action-packed residential week, participate in work experience and are given the chance to take part in community projects. During two of the weeks you will complete a work experience placement, giving you valuable experience to put on your CV and talk about during job interviews.

We pack a lot into our Team programme, designed to help you uncover your hidden talents and improve your confidence, as well as gain a nationally-recognised qualification, while developing your English and maths skills. As part of the course, we also spend some time developing your interview and CV skills to ensure your confidence is sky-high when taking the next step. It’s completely free and won’t affect your Jobseeker’s Allowance.

The most important thing is you eventually enrol on the course that’s right for you - we are here to help you.

Interviews If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time, as a general rule, these are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject (s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents/carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers At the end of your interview, you will be given written confirmation of any exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once your place is confirmed, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin. After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student!
