taster day options ART & DESIGN Art & Design - Creator, Designer and Maker

DOUBLE SESSION

Explore your creative potential in Graphics and Illustration, Fashion and Textiles, and 3D Craft, all under the guidance of expert teachers in our industry standard facilities. A-Level Photography Explore the world of photography in this fun taster session. Take a look at photograms in the dark room, Photoshop effects, how to manipulate images using the enlarger and the different chemicals that make up black and white photography.

ACCOUNTING, BUSINESS & LAW A-Level Accounting Our time, money and resources are precious! We need to make the most of what we have to thrive, not just survive. The UK as a country has important decisions to make, including what type of Brexit do we want? How can Economists address issues of poverty, obesity and unemployment? This taster will demonstrate how the study of Accounting, the “language of business�, will equip you for a future career in the business industry. Business - A-Level, & Business Studies BTEC Level 2&3 Do you have what it takes to start your own company or pursue a career within the business industry? Find out about our different courses and the interests, skills and abilities you need to become successful in the competitive business world. A-Level Law Do you have an enquiring mind? Learn more about how the legal system works and the tough issues the law deals with on a daily basis. See how judges attempt to use legal rules to arrive at fair judgements for defendants, victims and wider society.


CATERING & HOSPITALITY Catering & Hospitality Produce your very own burger to rival the professionals! Make your own patty* with spices and seasonings and get creative with additional ďŹ lling. This is a hands-on class, so long hair must be tied back and jewellery removed for hygiene purposes. *Chicken and vegetarian options are also available. For our catering session you will need to wear suitable closed in shoes, jewellery must be removed, and long hair must be tied up.

CHILDCARE/HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE Early Years Childcare / Care and Childcare Find out about the skills needed to become an effective early years educator. A taster session for those looking to pursue a career in early years childcare, teaching or social care related roles. Health and Social Care Level 3 Diplomas Would you like to study subjects such as communicating with individuals, anatomy and physiology, diversity and rights, psychology and nutrition? Explore all these areas in this fun taster session. Perfect for those looking to pursue a career in nursing, midwifery or roles as a healthcare assistant or social worker.

CONSTRUCTION & BUILDING SERVICES Brickwork Level 1 & 2

DOUBLE SESSION

Try out some basic brickwork and see the skilled trades that make up the modern construction industry. Find out about employment opportunities for qualiďŹ ed crafts people. Sessions consist of 1.5 hrs practical work, followed by theory including Maths and English used in brickwork.


Carpentry & Joinery Level 1 & 2 Diploma / Level 2 Bench Joinery Diploma

DOUBLE SESSION

Pick up basic carpentry skills in this practical workshop, perfect for those interested in a career in the industry. Construction & Architecture Your generation needs to start building housing and fast, especially as the UK has under built by 2.5 million homes. Could you help solve the crisis by designing modern homes that are stunning in looks, but also really quick to build? Come and have a go at designing your own creations using different scales and materials.

Plumbing

DOUBLE SESSION

A double taster session with everything you need to know about studying plumbing at College. Practical activities combined with the technical skills and theory behind the pipework.

Paint & Decorating Explore the painting and decorating workshops as you learn about the finishing trade of the construction industry. Find out about employment opportunities for qualified crafts people and try out some basic painting and wallpapering for yourself. Electrical Have a go at wiring up simple circuits, like the ones you would find in your home, using industrial standard tools and techniques.

For all construction taster sessions, you need to bring in the following: Old clothes and any protective clothing you may have (overalls, steel toecap boots, goggles, workshop gloves etc). If you do not have steel toecap boots, please wear sturdy footwear.


ENGINEERING & MOTOR VEHICLE Engineering: Electronics A taster session to 'spark' your interest: what would we do without electricity? No TV, Xbox, hot food, lights and many more! Electricity is an incredibly powerful thing that can be found right across the natural world from small animals to massive lightning bolts but thanks to the inquisitive nature of the human species, we have managed to learn about it, generate it and use it to make our lives easier. Learn how to harness this energy to create your own electrical business in this practical taster session.

Engineering: Mechanical Get involved in building a functioning electronic circuit that you can take away. This will involve learning some really useful skills alongside using industry-level equipment throughout the session, mixing theory, demonstration and practical activities together to produce the electronic device. If you're interested in studying electronics, then this session is for you! Motor Vehicle: Body Repair Use your imagination to design and make a metal creation of your liking. This exciting taster session features a number of demonstrations from welding materials, painting and preparing material. Motor Vehicle: Mechanical Repair See a demonstration of a repair procedure on a motor vehicle, before getting the chance to have a go yourself. The question is, can you remember which tools and equipment to use at the correct stages to complete the task?


ENGLISH & MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES A-Level English Do you enjoy exploring the world through language? Are you interested in finding out how writers influence our state of mind, making us feel happy, sad, scared or thrilled? If you like discussing, debating and analysing English Language and Literature then come along and get involved. Take part in a number of short activities designed to introduce you to our exciting English courses.

A-Level Modern Foreign Languages: French & Spanish An exciting lesson filled with conversation, songs and culture in French and Spanish. An interactive session based on courses in modern foreign languages.

HAIR & BEAUTY Beauty Therapy A practical session in our on-site beauty salon, teaching the latest industry tips and techniques, and exploring the different career paths after College. Hairdressing Have you always fancied being a hairstylist? Well, here’s your chance. Design and create a hair-up style on a tuition head during our taster session.

HUMANITIES A-Level Geography With current hot topics including climate change, migration, environmental degradation and globalisation, there has never been a better or more important time to study Geography. Come along to this informal taster session to find out more.


A-Level History Do you think history repeats itself? Do you want to know more about the key events that have shaped the last 150 years of global history? Do you like thinking for yourself and challenging opinions about the present time? Then join us for a lively investigation of the past. A-Level Politics This lively session will provide different insights into the world we live in, both past and present, and give you the chance to voice your opinions on the political agendas around us. Enjoy a range of activities to support your understanding of what it means to study politics at college. A-Level Sociology Studying sociology at college will require you to develop a critical view of the world we live in, through questioning, discussing and evaluating a range of social issues. Sociology is about understanding society in all its variety and exploring the complex relationships between us as human beings. Topics include sexism, racism, crime, religion, education, equality and a whole range of other areas of debate.

IT & COMPUTING App, Web & Games Design Explore the design process and create a series of assets for a mobile app or 2D game. This fun taster will let you practise skills to prepare you for a career in the digital industries in roles such as web based application and game design.

Computer Science A practical session where you will use some simple programming to create animations. No particular computer skills required: just be able to use a mouse and a keyboard and have a good imagination!


Software & Games Development An introduction into how computer games are designed and developed, including strategies, basic coding, and creating a basic game sequence. Plus, find out about the different courses and qualifications needed for a career in the gaming industry.

MATHEMATICS A-Level Maths Join a lively debate about controversial maths theories and application, take part in games with your peers and learn how to identify the maths behind any game or puzzle. This session also looks at how a strong mathematical mind can help you solve problems outside the classroom.

MEDIA & FILM A-Level Media Studies Never trust what you see. Explore the media’s manipulation of ideas and images to zombify your celebrity nemesis using Photoshop!

Radio Broadcasting Participate in the running of a radio station, working in a small team to compile a show consisting of music, interview and live material. Bring along a memory stick if you want to take your programme home with you.

TV Production Ever wondered how a live television studio works? This workshop gives aspiring broadcasters a chance to prepare scripts, conduct interviews, operate lights, sound and TV camera equipment as well as basic production and directing.


MUSIC Music Experience time in the Mac suite creating your own music using Logic Pro X, loops and samples. Explore our recording studios and have a go at recording and editing some live music.

PERFORMING ARTS & DANCE Dance & Drama Explore the different skills and qualities needed for these courses in our performance workshop. Trial a range of performance techniques in this fun, practical session.

PUBLIC UNIFORMED SERVICES Public Uniformed Services Are you interested in a career in the Armed Forces, Police or Fire Service? Try out our taster activities and start preparing for a career in the public services.


SCIENCE A-Level Biology Are you interested in the study of how life works? Biology is an intriguing subject which allows you to explore how living organisms function. A practical session investigating the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of a water flea. Look at their structure under the microscope and witness the effect live. A-Level Chemistry A big topic area on this course is 'organic chemistry': carbon compounds that includes petroleum fuels, food, medicines, cosmetics, clothes, DNA and life! Look at the power of O2 in explosives with some big bangs! Explore how organic molecules can flavour our food, make perfume with hands-on demonstrations, and create your own mirror using organic chemistry. If you like explosions, smelling good and looking good, we will see you there! A-Level Physics Are we alone in the universe? We cannot see planets around other stars, but we now know that many thousands exist. Discover how to find ‘exoplanets’ and figure out if they could support life. Imagine you get into an argument with a ‘flat earther’ who thinks that all photos from space are fakes. Discover how the ancient Greeks proved that the earth is a sphere with a simple experiment. A-Level Psychology Take part in activities to help you understand the anatomy of the brain. This session will also explore our memory, looking at how we can test its reliability and ways to improve it so we can remember more information - an important skill for all students!

Applied Science BTEC Level 3 Are you interested in learning how to extract DNA? If you enjoy learning through a hands-on approach involving research, practical experiments and prefer assessments through coursework, then this is the course for you! Use analytical techniques to identify an unknown chemical compound. Career paths include Forensics, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Environmental Science and Biomedical Science.


SPORT & FITNESS Sport Studies & Sport and Exercise Science Take a look at how our bodies respond to exercise, what skills are important for becoming a coach and how our mindset can affect our performance and progress. Find out about different career routes within the sport and ďŹ tness industry, and our sports academies.

TRAVEL & TOURISM Travel & Tourism Enjoy a flying visit around the world. Get an idea of the types of career you can have in the travel industry, and put your holiday knowledge to the test with our 'guess the destination' game.
