We have expert teaching staff focused on this industry area, and we are pleased to offer even more courses than ever before, including A-Levels and T-Levels in these subjects. We work closely with the NHS and Wave Leisure to provide you with meaningful industry placements. These successful programmes also give you the opportunity to study Health Sciences, up to Level 5, working in partnership with Eastbourne District General Hospital. You could also study Sports Sciences, up to Level 4, in partnership with Wave Leisure, Eastbourne Borough Council and the Clinical Commissioning Group.

Our Eastbourne campus has a specialist construction hub featuring dedicated workshops and live-builds mirroring the industry environment. We have a brickwork centre, plumbing and gas workshops, painting and decorating bays, and fullyequipped engineering workshops. The automotive crash repair training centre is an IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) approved centre - the only one of its kind at an FE college locally!

Eversley House is home to our popular creative subjects. Along with our incredible art facilities, which feature printing presses, pottery wheels, kilns, and photography studios, we boast eight incredible music recording studios. Each studio features industry-standard mixing desks and sound equipment. What’s more, you can study foundation and top-up degrees in Music Production, making it the perfect progression route once you finish college.

Our Catering students gain valuable experience in busy hotel kitchens, helping to feed visitors from all over the UK as the town is one of the nation’s favourite stay-cation destinations. Our Hair and Beauty students attend workshops with leading hairstylists, including Jal Clarke, and receive insightful tips into the industry. What’s more, our students have the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills to the test, competing in national competitions. Our Music students gain a real insight into the gig industry as they plan, set up and perform at their own end-of-year concert at Concorde 2 in Brighton. Our Creative Media students jump into the world of media as they work alongside local organisations to host Youth Radio, produce TV programmes, and create their own magazine. Uniformed Protective Services students put their knowledge and abilities to the test in a wide variety of placements with local police stations, the ambulance service, and fire stations - all thanks to our tutors’ fantastic contacts.

Enjoying your time at college is important for your wellbeing and an essential ingredient to your success. Positive experiences enhance learning, so when you’ve done something you’re proud of, give yourself the recognition you deserve and share these experiences with others.

Each year, our Catering students choose a local charity to support through fundraising dinners and special themed events. Recent beneficiaries include Raystede Animal Welfare (who were so impressed with the food that they then chose to host their annual awards at our Kings Restaurant) and Warming Up The Homeless. Our Art and Design students celebrate the end of each year with a week-long art show, utilising our Eversley House space. Classrooms are transformed into pop-up galleries where family, friends and local artists are invited in to marvel at their work.

Alumni Josh Babarinde, joined the ESC College Board in 2021, after running an award-winning business and volunteering as a youth worker. He now strives to support young adults in the area, saying, “At ESC, I had great teachers who believed in me. Since college, I’ve been to the US Embassy, met entrepreneurs, and even had the chance to work with ex-gang members in L.A. I grew up in Hampden Park, an underestimated part of town. But it’s packed full of great people, innovative businesses and a strong community spirit. I want to build on this and help to create opportunities for more local folk to thrive.”

MINDFULNESS AND Well-being PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN KEEPING YOU MOTIVATED. We are here to look after you and support you. Your safety and overall well-being is our top priority, which is why we have dedicated teams to help you cope with college life and remain motivated throughout your studies.

Our highly trained team meets the Matrix Standard for providing excellent Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) and Careers support. We’re serious about mental health and wellbeing and want you to feel good. We host a range of events, such as our Stress Awareness Month activities, to help you relax and focus before busy revision and exam time.

On the surface level, support comes from your tutor and peers (your own group of friends or your Students’ Union). If you require additional help with literacy or numeracy, need some 1-to-1 support or any extra resources, then our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team is here for you. Our Well-being Team is also on hand to provide confidential help and support with any struggles you may have with college work, college life, or your personal life.

Most recently, Uniformed Protective Services tutor, Zoe Carroll, who is also a fully qualified NLP practitioner, offered Maths & English students an insight into mindfulness and life coaching to help them prepare for their exams. So whatever you’re thinking of doing after college, we’ll be able to help you find the thing that is right for you.

THE LEARNING THAT YOU experience OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM... We know that the learning you do outside of the classroom can be just as important as the things you learn in it. We are delighted to be working with the Turing Scheme, the UK’s global programme to study and work abroad. It was recently announced that 40,000 students will receive funding to study and work abroad on the scheme, and this includes ESC students! We are proud to be one of the 363 successful applications made by universities, schools, FE and training providers across the UK to take part in the scheme. The Turing Scheme gives participants the opportunity to benefit from working and studying abroad, inspiring students to pursue their career goals, develop new skills and gain international experience. What’s more, nearly half of the places are allocated to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students will be inspired to achieve their career goals as they develop their soft skills, language skills and get a better understanding of other cultures.  We are excited to offer students this enriching and exciting opportunity, and with the easing of lockdown restrictions both at home and abroad, we hope to be offering our students more in the way of international trips very soon!

Our membership to the Creative Industries Federation, combined with a strong relationship with local and national creative outlets, gives our students the opportunity to flourish in this area. In 2021 we became a member of the Creative Industries Federation (Creative Industries Federation & Creative England). We are the only FE college in the South East and outside of London to become a member! The Creative Industries Federation is the membership body which represents, champions, and supports the UK’s creative industries. As an ESC student, you will benefit from free individual membership, which grants you access to exclusive tools, tips and resources on starting a career in the creative industries. You will be able to attend events and workshops, access the Educations and Careers Working Group, get peer-to-peer coaching and discover job opportunities in the creative sector! We are extremely proud of our strong creative offer across the college group and our new membership with the CIF means our students have the upperhand in getting started in the industry. Historically, we have celebrated multi-award winning and significant achievements across our creative departments, and this is set to continue.

Creative Outlets We’re excited to collaborate with leading creative venues to offer our students some of the best opportunities. The Depot (Lewes)

Students get the chance to develop ideas and projects with the award-winning arts and culture venue in Lewes, making use of three cinema screens, exhibition facility and generous outdoor space.

Theatre Royal (Brighton)

Secondary school students from around the district are invited to spend a day with the Theatre Royal Brighton technical team, ESC tutors and students. Tutors led masterclasses in drawing techniques, set design, and theatrical and special effects make-up. Our students get involved and gain valuable work experience by helping to run the masterclasses and capture the day on film.

The annual competition invites students from colleges and universities across the country to compete in four categories; Set Design, Costume Design, Hair, Wig and Make-up Design, and Marketing Strategy and Design. East Sussex College has entered and won awards for nine consecutive years!

TOWNER ART GALLERY PARTNERSHIP EASTBOURNE Towner Eastbourne was designed by Rick Mather Architects and sits in Eastbourne’s cultural centre, the Devonshire Quarter. The gallery’s collection of almost 500 works is best known for its modern British art, including the largest and most significant body of work by Eric Ravilious (1903–1942), and a growing collection of international contemporary art, including works by Dineo Seshee Bopape, John Akomfrah, Grayson Perry and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Exhibitions all held all year round

Exciting opportunities soon to arise include the chance to attend talks and workshops with featured artists and Towner staff. We are also excited to offer students the chance to complete industry placements at the leading arts venue, which includes setting up shows and contributing to the gallery’s website. Students may also work toward fulfilling employer-led briefs and see their own work showcased at the award-winning gallery (Towner was named Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2020).

We’re one of the select few colleges in the country to offer T-Levels.

Our incredible music facilities feature eight recording studios with industry-standard mixing desks (the same ones that Ed Sheeran has at home). We also have our own performance space, perfect for working on performances, recording albums and shooting music videos. Our Construction Centre is a real-life working environment and set up just like the environments you will find out in the industry. We have a dedicated Brickwork Centre, workshops for Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting and Decorating, and Engineering. Our facilities for Motor Vehicle are some of the best in the South East. Our Eastbourne campus is the only place where you can study a Body Repair course and perfect your painting skills in our purpose-built spray booth.

We are leading the way in a new era of education! We have evolved and developed our courses and now our estate too so that you can learn the essential skills you need for your future. Everything we do is to make sure you get the knowledge and skills in your chosen subject, because this is our passion. We maximise these possibilities with our exceptional facilities - which will get even better over the next three years. Our classrooms, workshops, kitchens, studios, and salons all mirror real-life working environments, which means you will be able to learn and hone your skills. Eversley House is the place to be if you have a creative flair. The building is set up to offer you everything they need to explore and experiment. In the art studios, you’ll be able to work with a huge range of resources to create paintings, pottery, or clothing.

Our facilities are already improving following a £1.2m investment earlier this year. We are relocating our A-Level courses to buildings at the heart of the campus. We are also investing in the redevelopment of the Eastbourne Sports Park where you will be based if you study Sport or Uniformed Protective Services with us. You’ll also have exclusive access to our 400-metre athletics track, a huge indoor sports hall, approved by the Lawn Tennis Association, and a 3G all-weather pitch. We will also be moving our Hair and Beauty salons to the main building at the front of the college, making the commercial venture easily accessible and visible to clients. Our future estates plan means a better education and overall student experience.

...AND BE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE THINGS YOU BELIEVE IN. We’re passionate about empowering you so you can take action, stand up for the things you believe in, and strive to be the best you can be. We’re also passionate about doing our bit to protect the planet, and we’re grateful to have proactive students, striving to do the same. In 2020, we signed up to the Mvula Carbon Capture Project, run by United Nations Association, where we pledge to offset our carbon emissions by planting a mixture of 3,000 of tropical hardwood trees in Uganda each year. The Mvule tree can capture an exceptional amount of CO2 over 80 years. As a college group, we produce 5,800 tonnes of CO2 per year, so our yearly plantation of trees will comfortably offset our carbon emissions each year. As of 2021 we are planting an extra 750 trees per year to offset our historic carbon emissions at a rate of 25% per annum! “This is a really exciting and important step for the college group as we take action to reduce our carbon footprint.” - Rebecca Conroy, CEO & Principal. Along with offsetting emissions, we are taking significant steps in reducing the amount of energy we use.

We have secured a £3.9m grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to support us in achieving net-zero carbon, reducing our impact on the environment. Our de carbonisation plan includes a range of opportunities to decrease energy consumption and heat loads, increase on-site renewable generation, and improve carbon performance across our estate. We are committing £1.25m for new windows and roof insulation, Ground Source Heat Pumps, solar, LEDs and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMs).

PARENTAL GUIDANCE What is Further Education (FE)?

Choosing the right course

Your young person is about to enter FE and you’ll probably hear this term a lot as they work through their final year of school. FE simply stands for Further Education, as that is exactly what they are doing after school. This is their chance to specialise in the area or industry that most interests them. This can either be through vocational courses such as Diplomas and T-Levels, a more hands-on approach through an Apprenticeship via theoretical and typical classroom based learning or three A-Level subjects. All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university.

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. There is plenty of help at hand so students can make the right choice. You can book a meeting over the phone, video call, or drop in to see us. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests and future goals. Our careers advisors are also on hand to guide and recommend next steps after college.

Safety and Well-being

Come and Visit

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. When your young person starts with us, they will be allocated a personal tutor who will be their go-to person for any questions, concerns or problems. Our dedicated Safeguarding teams ensure that your young person is safe and protected. Our Well-being mentors provide a safe space to seek advice and support about any issues they may be facing, whether it’s college related or something more personal.

We host a number of open evenings throughout the year at each of our campuses and online! This is a fantastic chance for you to visit with your young person, have a look around, chat to our tutors and get to know us a little better. Travel Getting to us is really easy. Our Eastbourne campus is on Cross Levels Way and has regular buses coming from Eastbourne town centre. It is also a short walk from Hampden Park train station. Students travelling by train can purchase the 16-17 save card for £30 per year. This card saves 50% on all travel. University A-Levels are the most common way of getting into university. If you want to study a degree, it is useful to look ahead at the courses that you are interested in as this often helps you figure out which A-Levels to take. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to give course advice and help you with writing your application and personal statement.

APPRENTICESHIPS Once you have finished your A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. The introduction of Higher Apprenticeships a couple of years ago, means that you will now have an opportunity to study up to the equivalent level of a Degree.

WORK Students may be able to find full-time positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject they have studied, thanks to their work experience placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, accountancy firms, solicitors,

What can I expect? It is open to all students and taken alongside a full-time programme only requiring a commitment of one hour a week. We’ll introduce you to fresh ideas and new ways of looking at the world. Every Wednesday afternoon you will have a lecture from a guest academic or public figure. The academy also provides support for any students who wish to apply to selective universities.

Sports Academies Our Sports Academy programme aims to provide opportunities at the highest level of sporting performance for learners. The Academies enable talented athletes to receive high level coaching and competition alongside their academic and vocational studies and our learners have access to the best facilities in the local area. Our Sports Academies include football, netball, athletics, basketball, tennis, gym and badminton. We encourage and support athletes to compete regularly in national competitions. We have a number of high level sports performers who attend the college. Notable alumni include Hastings Football Academy stars, Benn Ward, who signed a deal with Premier League side, Burnley in 2021, and Davide Rodari, who signed with League 2 side, Crawley Town, also in 2021.

Industry Placements, Talks & Trips Your learning will also take place outside of the classroom, with a number of planned industry placements, guest talks, and trips. Each year, you’ll be able to take advantage of our excellent links with local and national employers to gain valuable work placements in an industry related to your studies. In the past, students have worked for accountancy firms, marketing departments, local hospitals, local news outlets in print, TV and radio, and lawyers and solicitors. These opportunities not only give you valuable hands-on experience, it also looks great on your CV and UCAS application. We often welcome university lecturers and industry experts into the college to give talks about their jobs, their industry, and to give you an insight into what the industry might look like in the future. We also give you the opportunity to get involved with lots of trips throughout the year. Not all types of crime are alike. What different types of crime take place in our society? How do we decide what behaviour is criminal? An understanding of criminology is relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, including police officers, probation and prison officers, and social workers. With their critical thinking, analytical and communication skills, criminology graduates are also attractive to employers outside the criminal justice sector in areas such as social research and politics.

This course is aimed towards students that enjoy Science but want to continue learning in more of an applied way. Students can choose to obtain a Forensic Science Qualification as part of the course. You will develop skills in independent learning, practical ability, research and active group work. This engaging and practical course provides progression from the Level 2 Diploma. It will extend your skills as a beauty therapist by introducing you to a larger range of specialist beauty face and body treatments, including body massage, analysis enhanced with the use of mechanical massage, electrical face and body treatments incorporating advanced skin analysis and individual eyelash extensions. You will develop skills and knowledge in running a beauty business, including retailing and promotional activity, health and safety, and client care and consultation.

Explore and develop the well-established therapy treatments of reflexology, aromatherapy and remedial massage. CONSTRUCTION Construction in the UK is worth more than £110 billion per year and accounts for approximately 3 million jobs, 10% of total UK employment. Approximately a quarter of construction output is public sector and three-quarters is private sector. Our construction courses will give you the opportunity to study a whole range of construction disciplines such as Bricklaying, Carpentry, Electrical, Painting & Decorating, and Plumbing. You will learn the essential skills you need for your industry in our purpose-built construction facilities. On this course you will advance your knowledge of all aspects of the electrical installation industry. Develop your understanding of the principles of electrical science and learn about regulatory requirements related to renewable energy. The course also includes an understanding of electrical systems design. You will also study 17th Edition Wiring Regulations to aid your progression within the industry, assessed by online exam.

This course includes theoretical learning on scientific principles, and on health and safety requirements. CARE The Health and Social Care sector is one of the largest employment sectors in the UK and includes a wide range of roles, taking place within hospitals, care homes, nursing homes, hospices and dental practices. UCAS identified that applications for nursing courses rose by almost a third in 2021, with students keen to embark on a career in the healthcare sector after COVID highlighted the need for frontline healthcare workers. During our courses, you will learn key knowledge, practical skills, and behavioural qualities that will prepare you for a wide range of careers. You’ll be able to put these into practice as you complete up to 175 hours of work placement in an industry setting, such as day-care centres, GP surgeries, and care homes. We also work closely with our neighbour, Eastbourne District General Hospital, to provide you with work placements with one of the UK’s biggest employers, the NHS. You will also have the opportunity to see your theoretical learning come to life during a range of industry trips, visits, and talks. In the past, our students have visited the Body Works exhibition in London to enhance their knowledge in anatomy and physiology and learnt more about the legal framework of Care during a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

All young people in our local communities have the right to a good quality of life and to join a college course which will give them the skills, knowledge, behaviours, and support to successfully progress into a more independent adulthood. The Inclusive Learning team will work closely with each young person and their family to plan an individual pathway and set aspirational goals for achievement, which will be celebrated throughout the year. Most young people on an Inclusive Learning course will have an Education Health and Care Plan and some of them will require support and therapy which is written into their EHCP. Our specialist team of curriculum, therapy and support staff will celebrate and build on the strengths of every young person whilst ensuring that all support aims to increase independence and confidence. Our courses are intended to prepare young people for adulthood and start them on a pathway to life, independence, and the world of work.

Sensory Learning for Life and Independence

Step Up Level One

Sensory Learning for Life and Independence supports and challenges young people with a diverse range of inclusion needs who benefit from a sensory approach to learning. Students are supported by a dedicated team of specialist staff in a safe learning environment and will have opportunities to achieve a qualification, make friends, develop relationships and engage with the community.

Step Up Level One supports and challenges young people who are not yet ready to access a full-time vocational study programme at college due to a diverse range of learning, social, emotional and inclusion needs. Some students will have an education, health, and care plan, require wraparound support or small group teaching to successfully prepare for progression onto a full-time level 2 course, an apprenticeship or the world of work. Students will have the opportunity to experience learning in different vocational subjects, as well as community projects and work placements.

Supported Learning for Life, Independence and Work Supported Learning for Life, Independence and Work supports and challenges young people with a range of inclusion needs such as learning difficulties, disabilities, and Autism Spectrum. Students are supported by a dedicated team of specialist staff in their own learning environment which has the additional benefit of being based on and having full access to a college campus.

Project SEARCH Project SEARCH is a one year supported internship programme for young people aged 18 to 25 who have an education, health and care plan. The course is based at The Eastbourne Hospital which gives the young people the opportunity to gain and develop work related skills, knowledge and behaviour whilst they are on placement in three different hospital departments. Job coaches and work mentors ensure that any barriers to accessing a work placement are removed and that the learners receive the right balance of support and challenge which they need to get ready for employment. On graduation, some students have been successful in gaining paid employment at the hospital whilst others find work in their local community.

Each student will be supported to make decisions and develop skills for adult life such as going shopping for food, using public transport, and managing money. Each student will achieve a qualification and will have opportunities to take part in enterprise events, a work placement and or voluntary work in the local community. Through the combination of practical activities and classroom learning our students will develop their communication and teamwork as well the skills, knowledge, and behaviour which they will need for the world of work. At the right time, young people are will be supported to think about their future and choices after college.

All learners will be supported to improve their maths and English skills as part of their programme and will be able to take a Functional Skills qualification if it is right for them.

The quickest and easiest way to apply to us is through our E-Prospectus.

Pull out and fill in the application form opposite, using a black pen and writing in capitals. If you have any problems please contact our friendly admissions team on 030 300 39699, who will be happy to help.

Visit careerseastsussex.co.uk to set up your profile, search for East Sussex College and your perfect course, then submit your application.

Through our website You can apply to us online via our college website. 1. Visit www.escg.ac.uk 2. You will then be able to search for the course or courses that you’re interested in and then click ‘apply’. Make sure you select your course at the right campus. 3. You’ll then be taken to another page where you will be able to fill in an application form. 4. You will receive an automated email to say that we have received your application within 5 working days. If you have any problems please don’t hesitate to call and speak to one of our student advisors.

Once you have completed the form, hand it to your current school or college for completion. Your School will have to fill out the reference form part of the application for you. Check with your school whether they want to send it back to us, along with the application form, or if they expect you to. AFTer you’VE MADE YOUR application: Can’t make up your mind?

Course cancellations

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can apply for more than one course on your application form. You will have the chance to discuss your options with us at interview. We also offer bookable careers guidance appointments for you to explore your options. The most important thing is you enrol on the course that’s right for you we are here to help you.

In the unlikely event that your course is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account.

Interviews If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter/email telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time. As a general rule, interviews are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents /carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers After your interview, you will be given written confirmation of your offer and exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once you have an offer, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin. After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.
