Our Health, Care and Sport courses, based at Station Plaza, are some of the best in the South East. Our expert tutors have an incredible amount of knowledge. Some still work in the industry, which means their knowledge is always current and up to date. When you combine that with our pioneering and exciting industry placements, like working in the operating theatres of the Conquest Hospital, you will be able to learn all the key knowledge, skills, and behaviours you need for a successful career in the industry.

Our outstanding facilities at Ore Valley and the Automotive Training Centre make it the obvious choice if you’re looking to study Construction, Engineering, or Motor Vehicle subjects. Ore Valley features 7,000sq ft of realistic working environments, with livebuild areas and workshops that mirror those you will find out in the industry. We’re really lucky to have some of the best engineering workshops in the area, packed with lathes, milling machines and welding bays.

Our Creative courses have everything you need to explore your subject and let your creativity flow. Facilities include printing presses, pottery wheels, kilns, metal workshops, photography studios, a darkroom, sewing machines, and the latest Adobe software for animation and digital work. We’re really proud of our long and successful history of Art and Design courses in Hastings and give you the chance to stay with us for another three years to gain BA (Hons) degrees in creative subjects.

We have hundreds of contacts across a multitude of industries, so you can ignite your imagination and be well on your way to starting that dream career.

Are you ready to create new ambitions?

We are constantly building new partnerships. Recently, we placed over 15 Health and Social Care students into local hospitals so they could get first-hand experience in operating theatres. Our Make-Up Artistry students fine-tune their talents in our salons and then provide hair and make-up for touring actors at the Stables Theatre and Arts Centre. Our Uniformed Protective Services students work with local services such as Hastings Fire Station to learn more about their roles and responsibilities. Each November, they work very closely with local war veterans to arrange and host Remembrance Parades. Construction students enjoy lots of industry placements, including on-site work with huge housing developers like Barratt Homes. Our Creative Media students often get stuck into creating promotional and factual videos for local clients such as Hastings Borough Council and the Hastings Independent Press newspaper. We are proud to have hundreds of contacts across a multitude of industries, allowing you to complete meaningful industry placements and igniting a spark to help you progress to your dream career. ...And saving the best until last, our football academy, which is open to all, gives you the chance to be scouted by professional clubs.

Earlier this year we celebrated the success of Benn Ward and Davide Rodari. These two talented footballers signed contracts with Burnley FC and Crawley Town FC, respectively. Benn and Davide were part of our Football Academy, in partnership with Hastings United, and helped the college team secure promotion to the top level of college football. We celebrate footballing excellence throughout the college, so no matter which subjects you study, there is the potential to break into the Hastings United first team - for both men and women. Our Art and Design students celebrate the end of each year with a week-long art show, where classrooms are transformed into stunning pop-up galleries. This year saw us celebrate the graduation of 96-year-old Art student Archie White, who proves you’re never too old to learn!

They also strive to make college an inclusive and enjoyable place to be. When football player Marcus Rashford became involved in the campaign for free school meals during lockdown, Hastings Chef de Cuisine, Robert Donachie, shared budget-friendly recipes, which included everyday ingredients found in the cupboards at home, with students and their families. Performing Arts alumni Amita Suman says encouragement to achieve without limitation is what spurred her to carve out a successful acting career. “My teacher told me I could play whatever role I wanted, without being limited to a stereotypical Asian character.” She now stars in the No.1 Netflix series, Shadow & Bone. Alumni Josh Babarinde, joined the ESC College Board in 2021, after running an award-winning business and volunteering as a youth worker. He now strives to support young adults in the area, saying, “At ESC, I had great teachers who believed in me. Since college, I’ve been to the US Embassy, met entrepreneurs, and even had the chance to work with ex-gang members in L.A. I grew up in Hampden Park, an underestimated part of town. But it’s packed full of great people, innovative businesses and a strong community spirit. I want to build on this and help to create opportunities for more local folk to thrive.”

THE LEARNING THAT YOU experience OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM... We know that the learning you do outside of the classroom can be just as important as the things you learn in it. Industry trips, workshops and guest speakers create valuable experiences for our students.

New for 2021/22, we are delighted to be working with the Turing Scheme, the UK’s global programme to study and work abroad. It was recently announced that 40,000 students will receive funding to study and work abroad on the scheme, and this includes ESC students! We are proud to be one of the 363 successful applications made by universities, schools, FE and training providers across the UK, to take part in the scheme. The Turing Scheme gives participants the opportunity to benefit from working and studying abroad, inspiring students to pursue their career goals, develop new skills and gain international experience. What’s more, nearly half of the places are allocated to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Our membership to the Creative Industries Federation, combined with a strong relationship with local and national creative outlets gives our students the opportunity to flourish in this area. In 2021 we became a member of the Creative Industries Federation (Creative Industries Federation & Creative England). We are the only FE college in the South East and outside of London to become a member! The Creative Industries Federation is the membership body which represents, champions and supports the UK’s creative industries. As an ESC student, you will benefit from free individual membership, which grants you access to exclusive tools, tips and resources on starting a career in the creative industries. You will be able to attend events and workshops, access the Educations and Careers Working Group, get peer-to-peer coaching and discover job opportunities in the creative sector! We are extremely proud of our strong creative offer across the college group and our new membership with the CIF means our students have the upperhand in getting started in the industry. Creative Outlets We’re excited to collaborate with leading creative venues to offer our students some of the best opportunities. The Depot (Lewes)

Students get the chance to develop ideas and projects with the award-winning arts and culture venue in Lewes, making use of three cinema screens, exhibition facility and generous outdoor space.

Theatre Royal (Brighton)

Secondary school students from around the district are invited to spend a day with the Theatre Royal Brighton technical team, ESC tutors and students. Tutors led masterclasses in drawing techniques, set design, and theatrical and special effects make-up. Our students get involved and gain valuable work experience by helping to run the masterclasses and capture the day on film.

DE LA WARR PAVILLION PARTNERSHIP HASTINGS The De La Warr Pavilion is a pioneering centre for the arts, where everyone can experience contemporary exhibitions, events and entertainment in an iconic Modernist building. We are excited to be working with the popular seaside venue to provide creative opportunities for students in the very near future. Hastings Old Town

We are also excited to be working with Hastings Contemporary, a gallery attracting 65,000 visitors every year. The gallery showcases an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions including work by modern British artists, internationally celebrated artists, and emerging practitioners. Since opening (as Jerwood Gallery) nine years ago, the gallery has developed a reputation for its focus on painting and on Modern British art. The gallery sits among Hastings’s famous net huts, overlooking the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe.

Our modern and impressive Plaza Hair and Beauty Salon helps you get ready for a career in the industry. We have an abundance of styling tools and products, comfortable styling chairs, manicure stations, and massage beds. The best bit - we have our own luxury spa, complete with a sauna and Jacuzzi. You won’t find these facilities at any other college in the South East!

Over at Ore Valley, the construction trades come to life with 7,000 square feet of live-build areas and workshops. Our engineering students are able to fine-tune their skills in milling, turning, and welding while also enhancing their Computer-Aided Design skills. The Automotive Training Centre is our third campus and home to our Motor Vehicle courses. Here, you will have the opportunity to repair cars and work on exciting projects like the Pavestone Rally. However, in our new exciting plans, our ATC campus will be moving to Ore Valley and become a new Green Technology Training Centre. This will provide new space for local people to gain skills in emerging technologies linked to retrofitting in construction, green energy generation, and electric vehicle technology. Our future estates plan means a better education and overall student experience.

Our college is a mature environment where you will be responsible for your own learning. What you put in will be what you get out. College is very different from school; you’re now in control of what you want to study and how far you push yourself. You’re in control of where you go after college. You are our number one focus, but we’re also passionate about doing our bit to protect the planet. Over the past few years, we have increased the number of recycling points across campus for you to recycle, and we are committed to reducing the amount of single-use plastic in our canteens and coffee shops. Our Ore Valley campus roof has solar panels to harness the power of the sun to produce 70% of its electricity.

We’re also working towards a greener future. We have secured a £3.9m grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to support us in achieving net-zero carbon, reducing our impact on the environment. This includes a £1.75m spend on Ground Source Heat Pumps, Air Source Heat Pumps, LED replacement, chillers and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMs).

MVULA CARBON CAPTURE PROJECT In 2020, we signed up to the Mvula Carbon Capture Project, run by United Nations Association, where we pledge to offset our carbon emissions by planting a mixture of 3,000 of tropical hardwood trees in Uganda each year. The Mvule tree can capture an exceptional amount of CO2 over 80 years. As a college group, we produce 5,800 tonnes of CO2 per year, so our yearly plantation of trees will comfortably offset our carbon emissions each year. As of 2021 we are planting an extra 750 trees per year to offset our historic carbon emissions at a rate of 25% per annum! Along with offsetting emissions, we are taking significant steps in reducing the amount of energy we use.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE What is Further Education (FE)?

Choosing the right course

Your young person is about to enter FE and you’ll probably hear this term a lot as they work through their final year of school. FE simply stands for Further Education, as that is exactly what they are doing after school. This is their chance to specialise in the area or industry that most interests them. This can either be through vocational courses such as Diplomas and T-Levels, a more hands-on approach through an Apprenticeship or three A-Level subjects. All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university.

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. There is plenty of help at hand so students can make the right choice. You can book a meeting over the phone, video call, or drop in to see us. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests and future goals. Our careers advisors are also on hand to guide and recommend next steps after college.

We host a number of open evenings throughout the year at each of our campuses and online! Travel Getting to us is really easy. Our Station Plaza campus is right next to Hastings train and bus stations. Our Ore Valley campus is a very short walk from Ore Valley train station and our Automotive Training Centre is on the main bus route along the ridge. If you travel by train then you can purchase the 16-17 save card for £30 per year. This card saves you 50% on all travel. UNIVERSITY A-Levels are the most common way of getting into university. If you want to study a degree, it is useful to look ahead at the courses that you are interested in as this often helps you figure out which A-Levels to take. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to give course advice and help you with writing your application and personal statement.

APPRENTICESHIPS Once you have finished your A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. The introduction of Higher Apprenticeships a couple of years ago, means that you will now have an opportunity to study up to the equivalent level of a Degree.

WORK Students may be able to find full-time positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject they have studied, thanks to their work experience placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, accountancy firms, solicitors,

Enrichment activities are set up to encourage development and excellence. Whether your interest is sporting, academic or artistic, we have created programmes and support to help you excel. The skills you acquire will stay with you as you progress to university, a career and into life as an enriched individual. Enrichment activities are included into your timetable, enabling you to access as much as possible without interfering with your studies.

What can I expect? A programme of lectures and discussions designed to stretch, challenge and provide support for students who want to apply for selective universities or enrich their programme of study. It is open to all students and taken alongside a full-time programme only requiring a commitment of one hour a week. The programme is fun, exciting and aims to increase your intellectual curiosity and confidence in ways that will support applications to the most competitive universities and careers.

We’ll introduce you to fresh ideas and new ways of looking at the world. Every Wednesday afternoon you will have a lecture from a guest academic or public figure. The academy also provides support for any students who wish to apply to selective universities.

Sports Academies Our Sports Academy programme aims to provide opportunities at the highest level of sporting performance for learners. The Academies enable talented athletes to receive high level coaching and competition alongside their academic and vocational studies and our learners have access to the best facilities in the local area. Our Sports Academies include football, netball, athletics, basketball, tennis, gym and badminton. We encourage and support athletes to compete regularly in national competitions. We have a number of high level sports performers who attend the college. Notable alumni include Hastings Football Academy stars, Benn Ward, who signed a deal with Premier League side, Burnley in 2021, and Davide Rodari, who signed with League 2 side, Crawley Town, also in 2021.

Industry Placements, Talks & Trips Your learning will also take place outside of the classroom, with a number of planned industry placements, guest talks, and trips. Each year, you’ll be able to take advantage of our excellent links with local and national employers to gain valuable work placements in an industry related to your studies. In the past, students have worked for accountancy firms, marketing departments, local hospitals, local news outlets in print, TV and radio, and lawyers and solicitors. These opportunities not only give you valuable hands-on experience, it also looks great on your CV and UCAS application. We often welcome university lecturers and industry experts into the college to give talks about their jobs, their industry, and to give you an insight into what the industry might look like in the future. We also give you the opportunity to get involved with lots of trips throughout the year. CARE The Health and Social Care sector is one of the largest employment sectors in the UK and includes a wide range of roles, taking place within hospitals, care homes, nursing homes, hospices and dental practices. UCAS identified that applications for nursing courses rose by almost a third in 2021, with students keen to embark on a career in the healthcare sector after COVID highlighted the need for frontline healthcare workers. During our courses, you will learn key knowledge, practical skills, and behavioural qualities that will prepare you for a wide range of careers. You’ll be able to put these into practice as you complete up to 175 hours of work placement in an industry setting, such as daycare centres, GP surgeries, and care homes. You will also have the opportunity to see your theoretical learning come to life during a range of industry trips, visits, and talks. In the past, our students have visited the Body Works exhibition in London to enhance their knowledge in anatomy and physiology and learnt more about the legal framework of Care during a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

SPORT & FITNESS The Sport and Fitness industry is booming. Predictions from a couple of years ago suggested that the industry would now be worth £23 billion. You can be part of this thriving industry once you have gained Sports qualifications with us. Not only will you have the chance to study exciting practical courses, you’ll be able to do it in our modern facilities at Station Plaza. We have an on-site gym featuring running and rowing machines, as well as weights. You will also have exclusive use of the facilities at nearby Horntye Sports Park and Summerfields Leisure Centre, where you can play team sports and swim. The opportunity to play team sport really steps up a level with our sports academies. We offer football for men and women with our extremely successful partnership with Hastings United. A high number of students have played academy football and then gone on to break into the Hastings United men’s first team. Two former academy players recently made their footballing dreams a reality when they signed professional contracts with Burnley FC and Crawley Town. Competitive sport isn’t the only way you can make a name for yourself in the sports industry. We can also provide you with opportunities to gain handson experience in a number of sports roles such as personal training, fitness instructing, and sports massage.

UNIFORMED PROTECTIVE SERVICES The Uniformed Protective Services play a vital role in the welfare and safety of people in the UK and abroad. There are over 5 million people employed in the public sector across the UK.

Our courses will teach you everything you need to know and prepare you to join the uniformed protective services. We have a fantastic range of facilities on-site and nearby for you to test your physical and mental fitness. Our gym is packed with modern fitness equipment, Horntye Sports Complex and Summerfields Leisure Centre boast an astroturf and swimming pool, and our natural surroundings of the East and West hills provide a challenging workout. We regularly trek across the Seven Sisters, camp, canoe and rock climb at local outdoor activity centres, and towards the end of the year, we climb Mount Snowdon. We play an active role in the local community by visiting local schools to help run their events, we work closely with local authorities to help with their training, and each November, we organise a Remembrance Parade to commemorate British soldiers who fought in the wars.

All young people in our local communities have the right to a good quality of life and to join a college course which will give them the skills, knowledge, behaviours, and support to successfully progress into a more independent adulthood. The Inclusive Learning team will work closely with each young person and their family to plan an individual pathway and set aspirational goals for achievement, which will be celebrated throughout the year. Most young people on an Inclusive Learning course will have an Education Health and Care Plan and some of them will require support and therapy which is written into their EHCP. Our specialist team of curriculum, therapy and support staff will celebrate and build on the strengths of every young person whilst ensuring that all support aims to increase independence and confidence. You will then be able to search for the course or courses that you’re interested in and then click ‘apply’. Make sure you select your course at the right campus. 3. You’ll then be taken to another page where you will be able to fill in an application form. 4. You will receive an automated email to say that we have received your application within 5 working days. Course cancellations

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can apply for more than one course on your application form. You will have the chance to discuss your options with us at interview. We also offer bookable careers guidance appointments for you to explore your options. The most important thing is you enrol on the course that’s right for you we are here to help you.

In the unlikely event that your course is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account.

Interviews If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter/email telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time. As a general rule, interviews are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents /carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers After your interview, you will be given written confirmation of your offer and exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once you have an offer, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin. After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.
