Performing & Visual Arts: Lewes is all about the creative industries. We excel in performing and visual arts thanks to our purpose-built Performing Arts Centre, which is home to our Music, Dance, and Drama subjects. If you study one of these courses, you will have the opportunity to excel and collaborate with the likes of the Royal Opera House, the Theatre Royal Brighton, and Brighton Dome and Festival. We are constantly building new partnerships. Recently, we placed over 15 Health and Social Care students into local hospitals so they can get first-hand experience in operating theatres.

Our Childcare students enjoy first and second-year placements in local schools and nurseries across the region to understand what it takes to become a practitioner. Our Sports students take advantage of our partnership with neighbouring Wave Leisure to help run fitness classes and achieve lifeguard qualifications, while our Uniformed Protective Services students help organise and run Safety in Action week. Animation & Illustration and Art & Design students had the opportunity to develop ideas for the redevelopment of the Phoenix industrial estate in Lewes. They came up with 3D models, designs for ‘parklets’ (small green spaces that include seating and bike parking) and presented their ideas to a live audience before the best ones were selected and built over the summer.

We have a strong student voice at our Lewes campus. Student council members are determined to make our college a better place and frequently come together to celebrate success and positive changes. You will have the chance to join one of our number of clubs and societies, including our Debate society, Film club, LGBTQ+ group and ESC Book Club. When you join ESC, you will also have access to the ‘Student Portal’, a digital platform to share ideas and get involved with other aspects of student life. We often celebrate key awareness days, join open days at universities, and have fun at nearby theme parks. We’re really proud of our academic and vocational success. In recent years we celebrated winning the last two WorldSkills competitions in 2017 and 2019, and for the past nine years, our students have won top awards Royal Opera House Design Challenge.

We regularly welcome special guests to host workshops and events throughout the year. These include inspirational alumni such as Rob Stevens, who now runs his own successful business, Sussex Vegan. He worked with us to host the first-ever Sussex Vegan Festival. Former Performing Arts student, Amita Suman, shot to stardom in 2021, appearing in the Number 1 rated Netflix fantasy series, Shadow and Bone. Amita praised her college tutor, saying she gave her the courage to pursue an acting career without being limited to stereotypical Asian roles. Fashion Textiles alumni, Katie Jones, is now a successful designer, having worked with Selfridge’s on two campaigns - Material World and Bright Young Things. Her designs are all about promoting individuality and sustainability. We’re lucky to have welcomed Katie back to college on numerous occasions for special events, and she now teaches at our Station Plaza campus in Hastings.

New for 2021/22, we are delighted to be working with the Turing Scheme, the UK’s global programme to study and work abroad. It was recently announced that 40,000 students will receive funding to study and work abroad on the scheme, and this includes ESC students! We are proud to be one of the 363 successful applications made by universities, schools, FE and training providers across the UK, to take part in the scheme. The Turing Scheme gives participants the opportunity to benefit from working and studying abroad, inspiring students to pursue their career goals, develop new skills and gain international experience. What’s more, nearly half of the places are allocated to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students will be inspired to achieve their career goals as they develop their soft skills, language skills and get a better understanding of other cultures.  We are excited to offer students this enriching and exciting opportunity, and with the easing of lockdown restrictions both at home and abroad, we hope to be offering our students more in the way of international trips very soon!

Our membership to the Creative Industries Federation, combined with a strong relationship with local and national creative outlets gives our students the opportunity to flourish in this area. In 2021 we became a member of the Creative Industries Federation (Creative Industries Federation & Creative England). We are the only FE college in the South East and outside of London to become a member! The Creative Industries Federation is the membership body which represents, champions and supports the UK’s creative industries. As an ESC student, you will benefit from free individual membership, which grants you access to exclusive tools, tips and resources on starting a career in the creative industries. You will be able to attend events and workshops, access the Educations and Careers Working Group, get peer-to-peer coaching and discover job opportunities in the creative sector! We are extremely proud of our strong creative offer across the college group and our new membership with the CIF means our students have the upperhand in getting started in the industry. Historically, we have celebrated multi-award winning and significant achievements across our creative departments, and this is set to continue.

Creative Outlets We’re excited to collaborate with leading creative venues to offer our students some of the best opportunities. Theatre Royal (Brighton)

Secondary school students from around the district are invited to spend a day with the Theatre Royal Brighton technical team, ESC tutors and students. Tutors led masterclasses in drawing techniques, set design, and theatrical and special effects make-up. Our students get involved and gain valuable work experience by helping to run the masterclasses and capture the day on film.

Royal Opera House Design Challenge

The annual competition invites students from colleges and universities across the country to compete in four categories; Set Design, Costume Design, Hair, Wig and Make-up Design, and Marketing Strategy and Design. East Sussex College has entered and won awards for nine consecutive years!

Brighton & Hove Music & Arts (BHMA) is part of Brighton Dome & Festival and provides high quality and inclusive music and arts education and performance opportunities for all young people. BHMA works in partnership with a range of organisations including Glyndebourne, AudioActive, University of Sussex, Royal Pavilion and Museums and now East Sussex College! Our partnership aims to engage young people from all backgrounds, with high quality music opportunities. We know that music is an educational building block, fostering teamwork, better behaviour and social development.

We also have our own theatre, which allows our budding actors the opportunity to put on a grand performance at the end of the year.

We’re really fortunate in Lewes to be able to utilise the fantastic facilities that we have on our doorstep. Our Sports and Uniformed Protective Services students are able to train on the Lewes Football Club 3G allweather pitch, use the gym and swimming pool at Wave Leisure, and boost their CVs with leisure centre management and lifeguard qualifications. Over the next few years, we will start on our multimillion-pound project to improve our campus. We have submitted a £9m funding application to the Government to refurbish current buildings and construct a new three-storey building at the heart of the campus. Our future estates plan means a better education and overall student experience.

Our Evolve Salons hold eco status, which means we are fully committed to looking after the environment and reducing our waste. We have secured a £3.9m grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to support us in achieving net-zero carbon, reducing our impact on the environment. This includes a £1.3m spend on Ground Source Heat Pumps, solar, LEDs and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMs).

MVULA CARBON CAPTURE PROJECT In 2020, we signed up to the Mvula Carbon Capture Project, run by United Nations Association, where we pledge to offset our carbon emissions by planting a mixture of 3,000 of tropical hardwood trees in Uganda each year. The Mvule tree can capture an exceptional amount of CO2 over 80 years. As a college group, we produce 5,800 tonnes of CO2 per year, so our yearly plantation of trees will comfortably offset our carbon emissions each year. As of 2021 we are planting an extra 750 trees per year to offset our historic carbon emissions at a rate of 25% per annum! Along with offsetting emissions, we are taking significant steps in reducing the amount of energy we use.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE What is Further Education (FE)?

Choosing the right course

Your young person is about to enter FE and you’ll probably hear this term a lot as they work through their final year of school. FE simply stands for Further Education, as that is exactly what they are doing after school. This is their chance to specialise in the area or industry that most interests them. This can either be through vocational courses such as Diplomas and T-Levels, a more hands-on approach through an Apprenticeship or three A-Level subjects. All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university.

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. There is plenty of help at hand so students can make the right choice. You can book a meeting over the phone, video call, or drop in to see us. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests and future goals. Our careers advisors are also on hand to guide and recommend next steps after college.

Come and Visit

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. When your young person starts with us, they will be allocated a personal tutor who will be their go-to person for any questions, concerns or problems. Our dedicated Safeguarding teams ensure that your young person is safe and protected. Our Well-being mentors provide a safe space to seek advice and support about any issues they may be facing, whether it’s college related or something more personal.

We host a number of open evenings throughout the year at each of our campuses and online! This is a fantastic chance for you to visit with your young person, have a look around, chat to our tutors and get to know us a little better. Additional Learning Support

We’re really proud to hold a number of industry-leading quality marks for our excellent support to our students. Matrix Standard – our highly trained careers advisors have been recognised as providing excellent Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) and Careers support to new and existing students. Investors in Diversity – we are committed to improving Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) practices throughout our college. WorldHost Employer - By training 50 per cent or more of our front-line staff using the WorldHost customer service training programmes. We are committed to providing excellent customer service to all our current, future and past students and businesses that we work with.

English and Maths If your young person didn’t manage to achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE maths or English then they will be able to re-take them at college. Depending on their grade and the outcome of a short assessment, we’ll be able to enrol students onto the right level of course so they can work towards gaining either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification. YOUR EDYOUCATION... YOUR WAY... Most students choose to study three A-Levels or equivalent (such as a combination of A-Levels and BTECS/other vocational programmes). If you have not achieved the required grades in GCSE English or maths, these subjects can be re-taken alongside your chosen courses. University A-Levels are the most common way of getting into university. If you want to study a degree, it is useful to look ahead at the courses that you are interested in as this often helps you figure out which A-Levels to take. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to give course advice and help you with writing your application and personal statement.

APPRENTICESHIPS Once you have finished your A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. The introduction of Higher Apprenticeships a couple of years ago, means that you will now have an opportunity to study up to the equivalent level of a Degree.

WORK Students may be able to find full-time positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject they have studied, thanks to their work experience placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, accountancy firms, solicitors,

If you are curious, inquisitive and enjoy learning, then the Academic Enrichment Academy is for you. Explore new and interesting ideas that broaden your knowledge and supplement your college studies.

Enrichment activities are set up to encourage development and excellence. Whether your interest is sporting, academic or artistic, we have created programmes and support to help you excel. The skills you acquire will stay with you as you progress to university, a career and into life as an enriched individual. Enrichment activities are included into your timetable, enabling you to access as much as possible without interfering with your studies.

What can I expect? A programme of lectures and discussions designed to stretch, challenge and provide support for students who want to apply for selective universities or enrich their programme of study. It is open to all students and taken alongside a full-time programme only requiring a commitment of one hour a week. The programme is fun, exciting and aims to increase your intellectual curiosity and confidence in ways that will support applications to the most competitive universities and careers.

We’ll introduce you to fresh ideas and new ways of looking at the world. Every Wednesday afternoon you will have a lecture from a guest academic or public figure. The academy also provides support for any students who wish to apply to selective universities.

Sports Academies Our Sports Academy programme aims to provide opportunities at the highest level of sporting performance for learners. The Academies enable talented athletes to receive high level coaching and competition alongside their academic and vocational studies and our learners have access to the best facilities in the local area. Our Sports Academies include football, netball, athletics, basketball, tennis, gym and badminton. We encourage and support athletes to compete regularly in national competitions. We have a number of high level sports performers who attend the college. Notable alumni include Hastings Football Academy stars, Benn Ward, who signed a deal with Premier League side, Burnley in 2021, and Davide Rodari, who signed with League 2 side, Crawley Town, also in 2021.

Industry Placements, Talks & Trips Your learning will also take place outside of the classroom, with a number of planned industry placements, guest talks, and trips. Each year, you’ll be able to take advantage of our excellent links with local and national employers to gain valuable work placements in an industry related to your studies. In the past, students have worked for accountancy firms, marketing departments, local hospitals, local news outlets in print, TV and radio, and lawyers and solicitors. These opportunities not only give you valuable hands-on experience, it also looks great on your CV and UCAS application. We often welcome university lecturers and industry experts into the college to give talks about their jobs, their industry, and to give you an insight into what the industry might look like in the future. We also give you the opportunity to get involved with lots of trips throughout the year. We put on coaches to the UCAS fairs in London and Brighton so you can chat to Universities and find out more about courses up and down the country. Our hair, barbering, beauty and make-up courses will teach you the essential skills you need to succeed in these industries. CARE The Health and Social Care sector is one of the largest employment sectors in the UK and includes a wide range of roles, taking place within hospitals, care homes, nursing homes, hospices and dental practices. UCAS identified that applications for nursing courses rose by almost a third in 2021, with students keen to embark on a career in the healthcare sector after COVID highlighted the need for frontline healthcare workers. During our courses, you will learn key knowledge, practical skills, and behavioural qualities that will prepare you for a wide range of careers. You’ll be able to put these into practice as you complete up to 200 hours of work placement in an industry setting, such as day-care centres, GP surgeries, and care homes. You will also have the opportunity to see your theoretical learning come to life during a range of industry trips, visits, and talks. In the past, our students have visited the Body Works exhibition in London to enhance their knowledge in anatomy and physiology and learnt more about the legal framework of Care during a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

A-Level Pathway

AFTer you’VE MADE YOUR application: Can’t make up your mind?

Course cancellations

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can apply for more than one course on your application form. You will have the chance to discuss your options with us at interview. We also offer bookable careers guidance appointments for you to explore your options. The most important thing is you enrol on the course that’s right for you we are here to help you.

In the unlikely event that your course is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account.

Interviews If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter/email telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time. As a general rule, interviews are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents /carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers After your interview, you will be given written confirmation of your offer and exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once you have an offer, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin. After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.
