.Welcome
News, events, and interviews from East Sussex College, the world of FE, and beyond... I joined the College Group in 2018 as Principal of the Eastbourne campus and took over as Acting CEO in late February…. Just as a global pandemic struck! I have been absolutely blown away by our students, staff and community partners for the resilience and flexibility they have shown to help others. This issue celebrates these endeavours and the partnerships and people that enabled them to shine. As we enter into the next phase of these extraordinary times I also want to reaffirm East Sussex College’s commitment to supporting our communities. In June we are launching two initiatives to support different groups affected by the pandemic: Any Year 11 student will be able to access a wide range of resources that our colleagues have developed to help them prepare for their progress to our college or any other provider.
www.escg.ac.uk
As part of the wider economic recovery plan for East Sussex, we are pledging to commit £1m of our funding to support adult skills retraining in the area. We will work with a range of stakeholders including Jobcentre Plus, Local Authorities, Chambers of Commerce and employers to ensure that we deploy this funding to meet the needs of individuals and businesses. Our East Sussex College Group Board, chaired by David Smith, who took on his role at the same time as I did, is in key dialogues with local authority leaders at borough, district and county levels to ensure that the college fulfils its role as an ‘anchor institution’ at the heart of the challenge to protect, renew and rebuild community life, wealth and welfare. This magazine is a testament to the work we already do across the wider
East Sussex landscape, and we aim to be a fully engaged and reliable partner in coping with and emerging from the COVID crisis.
A huge thank you to our students and staff for their support and continued hard work over these challenging few months. Please take care, stay safe and continue to look after yourselves and loved ones.

‘MY TOWN’ ART COMPETITION “This is a great way for young people to develop their creativity.” College teams up with world-renowned architectural artist, Stephen Wiltshire, for the ‘My Town’ art competition. East Sussex College is all about opportunity, and our new joint venture with worldrenowned architectural artist, Stephen Wiltshire, MBE, gives creative schooland college-age students the chance to show off their artistic talents. The ‘My Town’ art competition was developed by East Sussex College and Stephen Wiltshire, as schools and colleges were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition brief called
for artists to recreate an iconic landmark or building from their hometown, recalling all its details from memory, just as Stephen does with his stunning city landscapes. Young artists and illustrators, aged 11-19, have until Friday 19th June 2020 to submit their masterpiece, be it in pen, pencil or ink. The artwork will be judged by a panel of creative experts from the college, as well as Stephen, to decide a winner and runner up in each age group (11-13, 14-16, 17-19). Six lucky students will travel to London to meet Stephen at his gallery, enjoy some lunch
and receive a signed copy of his book, See The Bigger Picture. The three winners from each category will also receive a £100 gift voucher and the three runners up will receive a £50 voucher. Stephen Wiltshire said: “I wanted to do something a little different to celebrate my birthday this year and teaming up with the college to launch this unique competition seemed like the perfect thing. This is a great way for young people to develop their creativity over the next few weeks and for them to hopefully produce a piece of art that they can be proud of.”

.TUTORS MAKE PPE FROM HOME TO HELP THE NHS
East Sussex College staff have been working together to create protective headwear for NHS staff. One of the things to transpire out of the COVID-19 crisis is the urgent need for more personal protective equipment and clothing. Members of the college, like Wellbeing Mentor Pauline Greig, have been doing everything they can to help answer these calls by creating a range of protective wear. She says, “As a wellbeing mentor, being told to stay home for 12 weeks was gutting as my default position is ‘how can I help?’. Making these items to support our frontline staff meant I could help from
6
home while keeping myself and everyone else safe.” The first batch of headbands and wash bags were distributed among staff at the Conquest. Pauline then took to social media to ask friends and colleagues to donate materials including elastic, 1-inch buttons and pillowcases. It wasn’t long before Pauline received donated materials and had colleagues from our Eastbourne and Lewes campuses helping her sew. “I’ve also had some pretty material donated,” Pauline continues. “The midwives loved the Disney Aristocats headbands made! A midwife at Hastings Conquest said, “Pauline’s idea is ingenious. Without the headbands, our ears are
so sore from wearing the masks, so we are all grateful to have them. All the coloured patterns brighten up the wards - and even the patients compliment us on them!” Pauline’s charitable work is ever-growing, with headbands being distributed to Eastbourne DGH and local care homes. Pauline concludes, “Keeping busy and supporting the local NHS during this crisis has been great for my own wellbeing too.” If you can donate materials like buttons or pillowcases, please contact Pauline directly on pauline.greig@escg.ac.uk.

3D printing PPE Julian Kupper, Engineering tutor from our Ore Valley campus, has been producing hundreds of protective visors for NHS staff to use on the frontline. At the very start of lockdown, while continuing to support and teach his students, Julian set up a production line from home and has been using 3D printers to create the face masks. The first batch of 150 visors were delivered to Eastbourne District General Hospital on 6th April. The shortage of PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic has been widely reported. If you know of any healthcare or essential services who would benefit from personal protective equipment (PPE) then please contact, Julian.Kupper@escg.ac.uk.
Sewing scrubs Fashion Textiles staff and students from the Lewes campus have been getting creative to support the NHS. Tutors, including Cynthia De Wolfe, linked up with Lewes sewing community group, Dolly’s Scrub Hub, and have been making scrubs during lockdown to support the NHS.
Students respond to lockdown A-Level Photography and UAL Photography & Filmmaking students have been recording their responses to being in isolation in a variety of ways: Emily Wood’s hot cross bun reflects on missing out on one at Easter due to lack of supply in the shops; Mya Mariette shows how the world through her phone is more colourful than the outside world, and Sophie Jones photographed her dad gardening - a sight she is seeing daily instead of just at weekends. These works will join others in an end-of-year digital showcase celebrating our students’ amazing achievements this year. Watch this space! www.escg.ac.uk

.KINGS BUILDING BECOMEs CHEMOTHERAPY UNIT East Sussex College has opened up its Eastbourne campus to help support the NHS in delivering key services to patients. “We have been working closely with our friends and neighbours at Eastbourne District General Hospital to see what resources they can make use of during this time of National Emergency,” says Tim Hulme, Executive
Director of Resources & Organisational Development at East Sussex College. “Discussions took place to allow the Chemotherapy Unit to be relocated to the college’s Kings Building from 31st March. This will really support the hospital’s vital work during this pandemic.” Furthermore, the
© FE Week
college has enabled NHS staff to utilise college parking during this time and stepped up its community efforts by asking staff, particularly those with a background in Health & Social Care, to volunteer to deliver services to the community.
Chasing rainbows When a nurse from Eastbourne DGH put an appeal out on Facebook, it wasn’t long before students and local children responded. The aim: to adorn the space in Kings acting as the temporary Chemotherapy unit with bright pictures to boost morale. This is yet another example of the community and college working together to deliver during these challenging times.

.FOOD DONATION
Back in April, food from the Buttery, restaurant and coffee shop at our Station Plaza campus was sorted through and donated to the Matthew 25 Mission. Members of the Estates, Catering and Commercial teams, accessed the campus to round up food stock with an end of May expiry date, as well as frozen meals, to ensure the stock didn’t go to waste. The Matthew 25 Mission expressed their gratitude on Facebook, saying “We are now regularly serving over
200 meals a day and served over 1,400 meals this week. East Sussex College made an amazing delivery to us of 600 pre-cooked meals, and plenty of carrots and potatoes for our volunteers to cook up some delicious meals, plus crates of drinks and large boxes of crisps, which we are giving out to those who have no access to food in the evenings. The college wanted to be able to bless their local community – which they definitely have!”
.Student care package Over 10,000 personalised care packs have been sent to students (Year 11 applicants and current cohort), as part of the Marketing Team’s annual ‘Keep Warm’ campaign. Previous incarnations of the care pack have included revision tips and an invite to ESC Minifest. It will come as no surprise that 2020’s version has been adapted: it’s a reassurance to students that their college place is safe and is packed with wellbeing tips and links for life during lockdown. The ESC website is being developed to create a resources hub for Y11 applicants to help them prepare for starting college. A second care package for students is also in production.

Craig Ottley, Curriculum Leader for Sport and Public Services at East Sussex College Hastings said, “NHS staff and key workers are doing an incredible job and we want to
show our appreciation and support by raising as much money as we can. “Anyone can take part, whether they would like to run outside or at home on a treadmill, they’re taking the dog for a walk or mowing the lawn. We’re aiming to raise £1,900 by completing 1,900 miles which is essentially a virtual lap around the UK.

.HIGHER EDUCATION ESC Higher Education courses are getting a big push in college marketing right now (online and with More Radio) alongside our offer for 16-19 year olds. Over the years we have built up an excellent reputation with our awarding bodies for outstanding delivery and support for our students.
At this time, where students might be feeling anxious about travelling far away to study for a degree, we can offer our students the security of studying close to home and receiving excellent tuition. Here’s a few HE highlights that have come out of lockdown:
Future mapped out HE students have been putting their time in lockdown to good use, generating contacts and work beyond their degree courses. Els Christenson is in the third year of her BA Hons Illustration degree, and has been showcasing her professional website, which demonstrates how her studies have prepared her for the work environment. Els has been commissioned to produce client work, including illustrated maps for the Priory Meadow Shopping Centre. Visit www.elschristensen.co.uk
Working with Prof. Elemental Shane Le Mar (third year BA Animation Art & Practice), has been commissioned to create the latest music video for Professor Elemental. This is a huge undertaking which involves live action, green screen technology, as well as 3D and 2D animation. The video will form his final major project. He has been working extremely hard throughout the lockdown to finish this video, which will have an air date of late Autumn.

.ADULT PART TIME COURSES East Sussex College offers free short courses through its online training centre, Grasp Learning, enabling adults (aged 19+) to train or upskill during lockdown and beyond. Rebecca Conroy, Acting CEO at East Sussex College, says, “Grasp free short courses support those who are furloughed, have been made redundant, or are self-isolating. Our online training is easy to access and is a great way to upskill or get into work. Health and Social Care courses are always popular with our learners and we are pleased to be offering courses to train adults before they volunteer or work in a Health and Social Care setting. These individuals
are needed in abundance right now, and to help prepare them for the work is a way we can give back to the community.” In the very first week, nearly 250 people expressed an interest in the short courses on Grasp Learning, and over 50 had enrolled, having supplied the relevant documentation and completing the Maths and English assessment. A massive thank you to Sussex Skills Solutions and everyone involved in fulfilling this online offer as we support those who are staying home but looking to train or upskill. Learners receive a nationally recognised qualification in courses such as Digital Skills for Work, Understanding Safeguarding and Prevent, Understanding
Children and Young People’s Mental Health, Customer Service, and Principles of the Prevention and Control of Infection. .Humans of ESC Rebecca West DAn Stratford Beauty Therapy alumni and WorldSkills gold medallist
Inclusive Pathways tutor completed Hastings Half Marathon at home
Korea finished third, which left me and the girl from China. We looked at each other and had no clue what was about to happen next. They called China and I stood there on my own. Suddenly it hit me… I was world champion! I’m Rebecca West and I’m the world’s best beauty therapist for 2019. It is an amazing feeling, but still hasn’t quite sunk in, even two months after winning. My journey [to becoming world champion] started while I was at college. I was given the opportunity to compete at the regional heats of the UK Skills competition. From there I got through to the national finals and after that, I went through to compete for a place on the GB Team.
Like most runners who take part each year, I was really sad when I heard the half had been postponed. I completely understood, given the circumstances, but I was determined to run, raise money and awareness for the hospice and have a bit of fun. St Michael’s Hospice is a charity that is close to my heart and I also wanted to show my support for all the key workers out there doing an amazing job right now. It was really surreal running on the treadmill. It was a different beast compared to running outside on the road. I didn’t have the crowds lining the street to push me on so I imagined familiar points around the course and used them as milestones. It wasn’t about the time, I didn’t care about that, it was all about finishing the race and raising as much money as I could for the hospice.

Hairdressing students take part in a Lockdown Hair Competition! Hairdressing students from the Lewes campus have been putting their time at home to good use, creating ingenious styles for a Lockdown Hair Competition. Hairdressing tutor, Emma Hawkes, devised the competition, and entries were judged by Jody Brooks, International Artistic Director of Haus of Brooks. Cardine Phillips won first place (and received an Amazon voucher), showcasing a style suited for her work as a carer and as a tribute to NHS staff. Cardine says, “My idea was to push the hair into a bun situation at the bottom of the head because as a carer we have to have
www.escg.ac.uk
our hair off our face. On the crown I created an NHS sign using black hair grips to symbolise the deaths that have occurred because of Covid-19. Next I adorned hair with green leaves and flowers coming out of the bun towards the NHS lettering to symbolise hope and a new lease of life when this pandemic is over. The flowers are also there as a gift to NHS staff.” Jody Books commented on Cardine’s design, saying, “What a great mood board with links to her personal experience and this translates well to her desired plan. I loved the NHS embellishment too.”
Styling with the stars Level 2 and Level 3 Hairdressing students have been encouraged to tune in to renowned stylist, Patrick Cameron, as he hosts live hair demonstrations every Monday. Level 2 Hairdressing Co-ordinator Clare Ferguson shared this stunning look, created by her student, Danielle Piazza (Level 2, Part-Time Hairdressing) who practised this style after Patrick Cameron’s live demo. The stylist is now following the team on Instagram and gave a shout out to East Sussex College in a recent demo! Visit www.patrick-cameron.com.
