Technical and Professional Education (TPE) will play a key role in increasing the UK’s productivity and bridging our skills gap. We currently lag behind our European neighbours and require more skilled workers in key upcoming specialist fields of employment. TPE has been reorganised into 15 clear routes or ‘T’ levels, including work experience, technical qualifications, and any additional requirements agreed by employers. What are Professional & Technical courses? Professional and Technical courses are ideal for learners who want a more hands-on approach to learning, which includes work experience and employability skills. Assessment is based on coursework and practical work, with some formal assessment. Sussex Down College has a fantastic vocational offer, with a purpose-built Brickwork centre, alongside a motor vehicle workshop and construction centre (Eastbourne campus). Also on site are the Evolve Hair & Beauty Salons (Eastbourne and Lewes), Floristry (Eastbourne) and Kings Restaurant & Bistro (Eastbourne). Open to the general public, these establishments give learners real experience in the industry they are working toward a qualification in. Vocational & Professional course grades (Pass, Merit or Distinction) can be transferred into UCAS points, just as A Level course grades.

Learners have a voice The Students’ Union enables all learners to have a voice. We recognise that learner’s opinions and experiences must be heard at the highest level, which is why we employ a Sabbatical Officer from the SDC student body. Ideas and suggestions are listened to and taken on, promoting a happier environment across College. 4

Our learners succeed in local and national awards, including the popular WorldSkills and UK Skills competitions for vocational subject areas. Other previous award winners include subject areas including Law, Film, IT and Music. Former Beauty Therapy student Kaiya Swain was chosen to represent the UK in the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi, October 2017.

Learners are given the chance to participate in trips, both locally, and abroad, whether it’s through their course or the Students’ Union, providing memorable life experiences outside the classroom. In 2016/17, learners visited Bruges and Uganda to name just a few!

All the feedback collated at The Student Council meetings are presented to the Principal and Senior Leadership Team in the form of our ‘You Said, We Did’ campaign, which is circulated to all curriculum areas and gives each department a better understanding of learner’s needs. As well as the Student Council there are lots of opportunities for learners to get involved in student activities! The Students’ Union offer a calendar of enrichments societies and social activities such as trips abroad, BBQ’s, live bands during lunch times, quiz nights and much more…. We are the only Students’ Union in the country to have achieved the NUS Quality Union kite mark, usually awarded to university Students’ Unions. This remarkable achievement is due to the commitment and hard work of our Students’ Union Team. As a result of this, we have been invited by the NUS to help develop a specific quality standard for other Colleges to follow.

ROYAL OPERA HOUSE DESIGN CHALLENGE 2017

STEVEN TATE Steven Tate, from Eastbourne, won gold in the SkillBuild Brickwork regional heat, which took place at East Kent College, Folkestone, in Spring 2017. In an impressive medal haul for the College, six other Construction learners from Sussex Downs won awards in the same competition:

The Creative Departments at SDC have evolved with the Royal Opera House Design Challenge from its inception, with learners winning awards in the Challenge for five years running. 2017 saw their greatest triumph to date, with SDC learners scooping three of the top five prizes, as well as a highly commended award.

Pascal Bailey, from Polegate, won the award for Best Set Design prize. Rhiannon Field, from Eastbourne, won the award for Hair, Wigs and Make-up Design. Chase Hayden, from Rye, won the Director’s choice award. Anne-Marie Leadbetter, from Hurstpierpoint, was highly commended in the Set Design category.

ZOE GRIMES Level 3 Hairdressing student, Zoe Grimes, from Eastbourne, represented Sussex Downs College in the WorldSkills UK Hairdressing competition in London (July 2017), coming first in the live round. The talented hairstylist submitted a creative cut and colour for the WorldSkills judges in April. Her asymmetric ‘lob’ with a full fringe and on-trend dark peach hue impressed the judges and she advanced to the live rounds of the competition, ranking number one in her field out of all the competing colleges. She now advances to the next stages of the competition!

Zoe is currently studying a Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing and Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management at Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne. In Beauty Therapy, three learners from Lewes The Challenge is embedded in the teaching programme of Production received training from College Alumni Kaiya Swain in the summer Arts (year 1 BTEC Certificate), Art of 2017 (see ‘Alumni’ for Kaiya’s & Design Double Award (year 2) story). The hard work, attentiveness and the BTEC subsidiary diploma and the assistance from a in Digital Design (year 1). Phil Rose, WorldSkills finalist paid off, Head of Production Arts, and James DiBiase, Head of A Level Art as the learners advanced in the first live rounds of the competition held & Design Double Award, at Sussex in London. Danielle Grayson won Downs College coordinate the first place in Level 3, Polly project. Phil Rose comments: Wood won first place in Level 2, “The Royal Opera House Design Challenge is an incredible opportunity and Alexandra Pattenden was awarded second place for Level 2, for the learners to engage with a live a wonderful outcome for the brief, a real client and design for the most prestigious stage in the country. College and testament to the high quality of teaching learners receive. Our learners rise to the challenge year after year, setting the bar higher and higher.”

MEET THE NEW APPRENTICES University isn’t the only route our learners are taking. Luke Emsley (pictured above), studied a BTEC in Sport Community & Higher Sports Leader award alongside an A Level in Business. He found out about apprenticeships through the College and decided to forgo university and pursue this route. He has just started an apprenticeship with Healthcare Management Ltd, who have a local office in Ringmer. Luke said: Uni versi ty isn't for e veryone. I wa sn't sure wha t subjects I wan t ed to study and didn't wan t th e studen t deb t .

Earning while I learn is fan ta stic and I can progress and train wi th a company while I study. Th ey ha ve big names a s clien ts including EE, Virgin and th e Home O ffice. This is an exci ting opportuni ty for me.

BTEC SUCCESS Grace Rolls-King (pictured above) received a Triple Distinction* in BTEC Health & Social Care Extended Diploma. She is now embarking on a mentor role before attending Roehampton University in 2018. She says: “The College helped me get a mentor role with Willingdon School, where I will be working with students, helping with their learning or any needs that they may have. I’m really excited about that. Then I’m going to study Primary education at Roehampton University. The College prepared me for my next step by arranging UCAS drop-ins where they could check over personal statements and things like that. That was really helpful to make sure they were as good as we could get them and give us the best chance of progressing. I’m really happy and really excited for the future! Going to University is something I’ve always wanted to do.” The class of 2017 includes BTEC Art & Design Extended Diploma student, Jade Earley (pictured on opposite page), who was the youngest competitor and finalist on The Great British Sewing Bee in 2016. Jade finished her time at SDC and is already working with a Brighton fashion house, alongside writing a monthly magazine column, creating her own fashion designs and being an ambassador for young adults suffering with Dyslexia. Jade says, “It was so exciting to get the certificate through. It means I can go on to University if I wanted to with the grades that I got, but I decided I’d rather go straight into work at a fashion house and work my way up. I actually work for a fashion company at the moment in Brighton. The College have helped amazingly; when I finished school I didn’t get the GCSEs that I needed to so I was worried that I couldn’t get onto my course, but they were really helpful and told me that I could go on to Level 2 first and then progress to Level 3, which I did. KAIYA SWAIN The most headline dominated College stories of recent times is that of 22-year-old Kaiya Swain from Eastbourne, who is representing the UK in the WorldSkills finals in Abu Dhabi in October 2017. Kaiya says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started this journey by competing in the college heats, Regionals and National Finals, which culminated in competing for one of the top two places in the country.â&#x20AC;? Kaiya achieved her goal of reaching the final two in 2016, competing against a learner based in Glasgow. The competition has seen Kaiya win regional heats, a national final, European finals and, in spring 2017, jump the final hurdle, reaching the most testing international standards at a team selection showdown. Talking about the competition, Kaiya says:

Hard work is a given, but it’s not all about studying. Sussex Downs College has a wide range of activities and social events, so there’s something for everyone, whatever your interests and ability. College is a chance to try something new and you have the freedom to choose from so much at Sussex Downs College. Come to our Freshers’ Fair at the start of term to see what you can get involved with!

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an exciting opportunity for learners to get involved in a self-development programme. Throughout the programme applicants commit to learning a new skill, taking up a new physical activity, volunteering in the community and undertaking expeditions in unfamiliar territory. The College is proud to be offering this programme to its learners, especially as it is so highly valued and sought after by universities and employers.

You can take part in loads of sporting activities, join the gym or use the sports park. We offer new sports and courses depending on learner interests, and have a dedicated Sports Maker who will listen to what you want to do and help make it happen. You can apply to join our sports academies in football, tennis, rugby or golf, in addition to your normal programme of study; or you may wish to opt into our enrichment offer as part of the cross-college healthy lifestyle initiative. STUDENTS’ UNION Run by the students for the students, The Students’ Union (SU) ensures the views of all learners are represented. It means you get everything you expect – and more – from your College. The SU also arranges a calendar of events for you to get involved in. See more on the Student Council, p. 5.

LIVE PERFORMANCE & SHOWS More than 40 spectacular shows a year are held in our studios and theatres and at a variety of professional venues. SPORTS ACADEMIES The College seeks to identify elite sportsmen and women to offer additional training and fitness opportunities and to represent the College at British Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sports events. We encourage and support these athletes to compete regularly, with the prospect of competing in national competitions if successful in regional heats. Sussex Downs College has a number of high level sports performers who attend the College, some of whom are active within the College Academies and Sports Performance options. These include regional and national representation in sports such as football, taekwondo, sailing, mountain biking and karate. We also have a number of learners who have trained for and represented Great Britain in international competitions. The Sports Academy programme at Sussex Downs College aims to provide opportunities at the highest level of sporting performance for learners. The Academies enable talented athletes to receive high level coaching and competition alongside their academic and vocational studies. Our learners have access to the best facilities in the local area, including Eastbourne Sports Park, Eastbourne athletics tracks, College gyms, Lewes Leisure Centre and Southdown Private Sports Club. Each Academy trains three times a week with fixtures taking place on Wednesday afternoons. ACADEMIES FIVE FOCUSES 1. Development of individual and team skill 2. Enhancement and knowledge of personal fitness and nutrition 3. Understanding of strategies and tactics of the game 4. Competing and performing at the highest level possible, both individually and as a team 5. Understanding and practising the basic principles of coaching sport ACADEMY REQUIREMENTS All learners who join are expected to have high levels of attendance and performance in the classroom, attitude to learning and personal presentation. Eastbourne Campus Academies FOOTBALL ACADEMY The Football Academy comprises of a men’s U19 team competing in the Sussex County College League and English Schools and Colleges Cups. Each learner will receive four hours of skill and match development training per week, in addition to strength and conditioning training from a qualified personal trainer. EASTBOURNE BOROUGH SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL ACADEMY Eastbourne Borough Football Club (FC) offer opportunities for both men’s and women’s U19 football, competing in the Conference Youth Alliance League (the highest level of non-league football), and the Ryman Youth League. The primary goals for this Academy programme is to firstly provide its players with the opportunity to develop their footballing abilities through the Academy’s holistic, multidisciplinary approach, with a view to progressing the club’s young, homegrown players into the Eastbourne Borough FC 1st team squad. And secondly, on an educational level, to give learners the opportunity to study a broad choice of A Level subjects and/ or BTEC courses alongside their full-football programme to provide players with the academic qualifications required to follow the preferred future educational pathways. All Academy scholars will be coached by the club’s carefully selected coaching team and will train regularly alongside the Eastbourne Borough FC 1st team squad. TENNIS ACADEMY The Tennis Academy offers each learner four hours per week of skill and match development training, delivered by a Level 3 Lawn Tennis Association coach. They also

receive one and a half hours’ fitness training from a qualified personal trainer. They will take part in matches for the Aegon League and British Colleges Sports events.

GOLF ACADEMY This course has been specifically designed to give recognition to talented golfers, as part of the England Golf Partnerships vision of being “The Leading Golf Nation in the World by 2020.” It aims to support young male and female elite golfers (aged 16-18 at the start of the programme) who can demonstrate the necessary talent, commitment and skill to achieve excellence in golf and who possess a realistic chance of making a career from playing golf. The Golf Academy team runs an order of Merit for our players each week and the team for the national Intercollegiate Golf Tour is selected from this. Through this event, players get to play on different courses throughout the country.

Lewes Campus Academies MEN’S RUGBY UNION ACADEMY Over 50 learners make up the Men’s Rugby Academy at the Lewes campus. Each year, the academy enters competitions including the Natwest Cup, British Colleges Cup, British Colleges Elite League, Sussex League, Sussex Cup and various 10’s/7’s competitions. Ed Chrusciel studied A Levels in PE, Biology, Business & Psychology (2014-16) and was part of the Rugby Academy during his time at Sussex Downs College. He said, “I have really enjoyed being a part of the Rugby Academy this year. I feel my game has improved a lot since I started and I feel this is down to the highly competitive environment that has been established. I would highly recommend being a part of the

The Men’s Football Academy in Lewes takes around 30 learners and enters competitions including the British Colleges Cup, ESFA Cup, Sussex League, Sussex Cup and various 5-a-side competitions. Paul Woods studied BTEC Sport Diploma, A Level Human Biology, Community Sports Leader & Higher Sports Leader, 2014-16 and joined the Football Academy. He said, “The Men’s Football Academy has been great over the last year. I have been able to play football at a high level while still focusing on my academic studies. We enter many competitions which provide us with regular matches that are all highly competitive. If you play football you should definitely choose the men’s football academy whilst studying at SDC.” WOMEN’S NETBALL ACADEMY Around 20 learners join the Women’s Netball Academy at the Lewes campus. Learners are entered into competitions including British Colleges Cup, Sussex League, Sussex Cup and various mixed and Fastnet competitions. Elizabeth Noakes studied BTEC Sport Diploma, A Level English Language, Community Sports Leader & Higher Sports Leader (2014-16), and joined the Netball Academy in Lewes. She said, “I have loved being a part of the Netball Academy this year. I have made loads of new friends and have been able to continue playing netball at a high level inside and outside of College. The facilities we use and level of competition we face are really high and this has helped me improve as a player and the whole team as well.”

At interview, we make sure your child has chosen the right course for them and help them with details about the course or programme. We encourage parents to attend. Your child will be invited to attend an Introductory Day at the end of the summer term. These days will enable your child to attend classes in the subjects they have chosen. ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMES

Aiming for a vocational course, but missing the grade profile you need for a Level 2 programme? You can still come to College to study a range of vocational courses at Level 1, to ensure you are prepared for the next steps. The Explorer programme offers units in a number of vocational areas which are combined to enable you to achieve a Diploma or Certificate in Vocational Studies, and provide you with a chance to try out a subject before applying for a full programme in that area. Units include sport, public services, health and social care, IT, administration, retail, music, art, carpentry, brickwork, motor vehicle, catering and hairdressing. You will also study Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT if you have not already achieved these at GCSE level, or you may complete GCSE retakes to help you achieve a ‘4’ in English and/ or Maths.

If you don’t think a full-time course is your immediate starting point, we offer a range of part-time and intensive programmes that might be. With various start dates throughout the year, these programmes support your next steps towards full-time learning or an Apprenticeship. Tailored around your needs, our Engagement programmes offer exciting and life-changing experiences that develop skills in confidence, self-esteem, leadership and personal resilience. Through team building, community projects and vocational skills training, alongside Maths and English skills our passionate and specialist staff will work with you to achieve your goals and aspirations. THE PRINCE’S TRUST: TEAM PROGRAMME 2017/2018 Eastbourne Start dates: September, January, April Lewes Start dates: September, January, April Our unique 12-week programme is designed to support 16 to 25 year olds who are not in education or employment on a personal development journey. The programmes are based at both our Eastbourne and Lewes sites and give anyone the opportunity to improve confidence, uncover hidden talents, gain new skills through community involvement and achieve a qualification. The course is completely free and shouldn’t affect any JSA. Taster Day: Meet new people Don’t worry about turning up on your own – there will be about 12 people joining and everyone will be in the same situation. It’ll be informal and there will be plenty of activities so you’ll soon feel part of things. Week 1: Get settled Over this week, you will start planning for the weeks ahead – setting out what you want to achieve and finding out how to get your qualifications. Expect lots of icebreakers and interactive activities.

Week 7-8: Work placements This is the time to see how the skills you’ve developed so far can help you in the workplace for what you would like to do. It’s also a great chance to try out a type of work, or company, to see whether you like it. Week 9: Plan for the future You’ll get help to write a fantastic CV, practise your interview skills and make applications. Week 10-11: Meet the challenge You and your team will take on a challenge to help others in the community. This is when you get to test out all the skills you have worked on so far. Week 12: Have your say In your final week, you will deliver a presentation with your team to an invited audience. This is your chance to show off the talents you’ve discovered! This may sound scary now, but after 12 weeks on the team you will be surprised at how far you’ve come.

LEVEL 2 PROGRAMMES Level 2 Programmes are for learners to gain or improve GCSE and complete vocational Level 2 qualifications. For many of our learners, the Level 2 programme is a year to build a firm base from which to take further study or move into employment. The programme will support you in developing a wide range of skills and knowledge and in building your confidence. Learners will study a full-time vocational programme, while improving their skills and qualifications in Maths and English. The programme that you choose to follow will be discussed at interview and is tailored to your career aspirations and interests.Many learners progress to Level 3 courses or apprenticeships.

Week 2: Residential: Activity Centre You will spend this week away – trying new things and learning how to work with others. This gives you a chance to break away from your current situation. The sort of things you could do include canoeing, climbing, raft-building and much more! Week 3-6: Something to talk about As a team, you will decide on a project to benefit your local community and carry it out. This gives you a great experience to talk about at future interviews. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS MANAGE YOUR TIME At College, there is no bell to signal the start and end of class. You are independent and entrusted with managing your time effectively. This includes arriving to class on time, using gaps in your timetable wisely, and completing projects to deadlines. Most technical study areas have entire half days or days devoted to the subject, as opposed to A Level classes. This means time can be spent on your individual coursework or group activity as appropriate. KEEP YOUR WORKPLACE TIDY Be aware of the space youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working in and sharing with other learners. Be respectful of each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work space and keep your station clean and tidy after each session. ATTEND ALL YOUR LESSONS If you are unable to make a class, report your absence using the College Absence Line. BE A COMMITTED AND DEDICATED LEARNER Get the most out of your learning by participating in lessons. There are lots of opportunities for discussion and creative input. Your time at College will be more rewarding if you have given it your all. Only use your mobile phone and other electronic devices as part of learning, and only when agreed by the teacher. KEEP SAFE Follow health and safety policies at all times. This includes wearing the correct uniform or protective clothing for your subject. For example, wear steel-toed boots in the construction department; keep long hair tied back in Beauty Therapy; keep your midriff covered in Catering. Also, be sure to wear your College lanyard at all times, so you can be easily identified around campus. RESPECT THE COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT Look after borrowed equipment and resources, correctly dispose of your rubbish and recycling and conduct yourself in a sensible and polite manner. 24

At Sussex Downs College, we recognise that when recruiting, higher education academic institutions and employers are looking for much more than great qualifications. We know these so called ‘soft skills’ can be difficult to evidence, so we have worked with over 400 businesses and HE providers to build an Employability Passport and a Passport to HE. TIPS FOR GETTING INTO WORK OFFER YOUR TIME Take the time to contact employers in the industry you’re studying. Ask them for advice on progressing in the industry and, if your timetable allows for it, take on any work experience, as who knows what doors this may open for you? CONSIDER AN INTERNSHIP OR APPRENTICESHIP Studying a technical subject at College can lead to Higher Education (HE) at University, but it can also take you straight into the workplace via an internship or apprenticeship. During your course, you will be on the receiving end of training advice and seminars from industry professionals. Maximise the opportunities given by these introductions and seek out internships or work experience with these companies over the holidays. The workplace is competitive and any experience you can add to your CV puts you ahead of another candidate finishing College. 26

WORK EXPERIENCE Work experience is an integral part of our learners’ study programme. It provides an insight into working for a local or national business and gives learners a glimpse of the real working industry outside of what is taught in the classroom. All subject areas at Sussex Downs College include a work experience placement from vocational subjects such as Brickwork and Hairdressing, to subjects such as Law and Business. Each year, our Business students have the chance to complete a work experience placement with Badische Anilin & Sodafabrik (BASF), the world’s largest chemical manufacturing company, based in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Sam Alvarez, Raising Standards Manager of Academic Studies at Sussex Downs College, says: “This exchange proved to be hugely beneficial on so many levels, from developing knowledge of different cultures in terms of business and every-day life to experiencing the duty and satisfaction of supporting the community you live in. I took an enormous amount of pleasure from watching the learners grow in confidence every day. They were quick to find their way around the local area and showed huge resilience and adaptability, especially in their work placements where many of them were working in challenging environments with limited knowledge of the German language. I can’t wait to run this trip again.”

Callum returned from the trip feeling stronger, wiser and uplifted. “It is certainly a trip I won’t forget for a long time to come,” he says. “I learned so much seeing BASF. I doubt anyone has ever seen a factory so big with so many employees [35,000] on one site.” Industry experience comes in many forms at Sussex Downs College. In 2016, Law students had the chance to compete in the Bar National Mock Trial Competition. “This was the first time that Sussex Downs College has entered the competition, and I am pleased that our learners have acquitted themselves in the very best manner possible,” says Fritha Watson, Law Course Coordinator at the College. “They were excellent barristers and witnesses, court clerks, ushers and members of the jury, and displayed a professional, respectful approach to the competition and their competitors.” The Sussex Downs College learners were presented with trophies and a cheque for £100, provided by the Senior Judge at Maidstone Crown Court. The Hubs, based at both the Eastbourne and Lewes campuses, provide information to learners on employability skills and work experience opportunities. Teaching staff also have industry contacts, creating work experience opportunities for a large number of our learners. On placement, the same classroom expectations apply. Learners are expected to arrive on time, dress appropriately for the work they will be doing and be polite and courteous at all times. You are representing the College and yourself, so make sure you are promoting your skills and knowledge in the best possible light. Digital Design students produced two installations for the Lewes Light Festival in 2015 and have been involved in the annual community project ever since. The event saw learners take over public areas and illuminating them with an artistic light projection accompanied by classical music. Phil Rose said, “This event has turned into the most amazing community project and would not have happened without the overwhelming support of College learners and staff, Lewes Youth Theatre and Lewes community. The support of lighting professionals and lighting designers from all walks of life was staggering and the learners liaised directly with them over all things design and all things production. They were like micro apprentices that worked way into the middle of many dark and damp nights. We toured approximately 600 people over the two nights.” ROYAL OPERA HOUSE DESIGN CHALLENGE The College’s links with the creative industries don’t end with Lewes Youth Theatre. For the past few years, our learners have been celebrating success in the Royal Opera House Design Challenge, which invites submissions from learners across the UK. Whether you’re hoping to get a job after College or go on to further study, your Maths and English results determine the level at which you start studying at College. These are essential skills, highly sought after by employers and universities. It’s therefore vital that you achieve the best level of Maths and English you possibly can before you come to College. If you haven’t achieved a grade 4/C or above in Maths and/or English from school, then we will design a learning programme to support you in improving these skills. NEW GCSE GRADING STRUCTURE Reformed GCSEs have been introduced gradually over 3 years from September 2015. They are being graded from 9 to 1, instead of A* to G.

Learners awarded GCSEs in 2017 and 2018 will therefore receive a mixture of 9 to 1 and A* to G grades. Learners will not lose out as a result of the changes. Ofqual will use a statistical method (known as comparible outcomes) so that: • broadly the same proportion of learners will achieve a grade 4 and above as currently achieve a grade C and above.

Your GCSE results will determine your initial level of study post 16. As you complete each level of education you can progress to the next. To see how qualifications compare and our standard entry requirements, see the table opposite. If studying a practical vocational subject, it is likely that learners will enter at Level 1. Learners with some experience in their chosen subject, or who display skills and aptitude, may be able to fast track and enter at Level 2. Planned skills development is vital to ensure learners build expertise and confidence in their vocational specialism. There may be flexibility around these entrance criteria, depending on your individual situation. Please contact our Admissions Team if you need any further information, advice and guidance. WHY SHOULD YOU STUDY ART & DESIGN? Careers in art and design are all about creating things which are appealing to the eye. Art is traditionally created purely for its aesthetic appeal, whilst design tends to revolve around a product. You might even say that design is art with a function. The two different areas may seem worlds apart in their purpose, but the people who work in art and design all tend to have an essential mix of practical skills and a talent for using colour, space, shape and form. In order to be successful you must have the ability to know what looks good, to come up with new ideas and to develop your own style. However, creative flair alone is not enough. Working independently as a freelancer is common, but many artists and designers don’t actually work entirely on their own. When working as part of an art collective or for a design agency, it is essential to develop excellent communication and teamwork skills.

What will I study? The Level 2 Diploma is designed to provide learners with an interest in art and design an opportunity to explore some of the materials, methods and processes of many art and design activities. This qualification will also help learners begin to develop related technical skills and build a portfolio of art and design work. Learners will learn through practical activities and projects.

What will I study? This intensive course, for those considering careers in art and design, begins with diagnostic study where you develop your skills in research, drawing, making, thinking, problem solving, and working with new materials and processes. You will study and specialise in one of a range of art and design areas, including textiles, fashion, furniture, product, crafts (wood, metal, plastic, ceramics, glass, etc.), jewellery, architecture, theatre, costume, graphics, illustration, animation, photography, film, printmaking, painting, sculpture and fine art. Your studio practice will be supported by contextual studies, and the course will fully support you in your choice and application to further study.

What will I study? This is a practical course divided into two units. On this course you will undertake three practical projects where you will learn about different aspects of photography using both film based and digital technology. You will learn how to shoot, process and print photographic film as well as develop some picture editing skills in Photoshop. You will explore composition, visual communication and develop your ability to analyse what makes images effective.

What can I do after this course? This course can provide a pathway on to the Extended Diplomas in Art and Design or Creative Media, or other appropriate vocational programmes. Past learners have progressed successfully on to courses in photography, media and games design, illustration, furniture design, product design, graphic design, design crafts, textiles and fashion design.

What will I study? On this course you will advance your knowledge of all aspects of the electrical installation industry. You will develop your understanding of the principles of electrical science and learn about regulatory requirements related to renewable energy. You will develop skills in fault diagnosis of complex systems and know how to carry out inspection and testing procedures safely. The course also includes an understanding of electrical systems design. In addition, you will study 17th Edition Wiring Regulations to aid your progression within the industry assessed by online exam.

What will I study? On this course you will gain the knowledge and skills to eventually become qualified within the painting and decorating trade. You will learn how to prepare surfaces for decoration, apply paint by both brush and roller, produce specialist decorative finishes and hang foundation and plain wallpaper. You will also learn how to erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms. All of these tasks will be carried out in our specialist painting and decorating workshop under expert tuition of our skilled lecturers.

What can I do after this course? You can progress to the Electrical Installation Advanced Apprenticeship if you successfully complete this course and show an aptitude for further study and obtaining employment. Learners who are over 24 years old can progress onto the Competent Person Scheme. Progression to HNC is also possible. We will discuss these options with you as your course progresses.

What will I study? The Personal Progress programme focuses on developing independence, personal and social development, in addition to Maths and English Language skills. Learners benefit from a project based approach, developing skills through planning and taking part in events, Horticulture, Media, Arts and Crafts, and Catering and Hospitality projects. What will I study? This Level 2 Diploma is seen as the first step towards a career as a professional Beauty Therapist. On this course you will develop beauty therapy skills in areas such as basic manicure, pedicure, make-up application, nail art, face painting, salon reception, health and safety, and creating retail displays. What will I study? The Digital Design Subsidary Diploma is a two year course that is the equivalent of a full A Level. There is no exam and all work is assessed at this centre. You will develop skills in pre-production planning together with still and moving (animation and video projection) and graphic layout. This is a course for all creative elements of design work with digital platforms. We work with images in industry leading software. We make interactive documents and graphic novels for print, the web and tablets. We produce moving image and special effects in video and help you develop your creative style and identity. This course can be taken in combination with other courses, including the Double Award in Art and Design.

What will I study? The one year Level 2 UAL Music Production Diploma is equivalent to taking four GCSEs. It is designed to prepare you for employment in the music industry, self-employment or for progression to our Level 3 UAL Music Production Diploma. You will undertake a wide range of practical project work to establish your interests and strengths, before progressing to either a performance based specialist pathway, or a production (recording, producing, engineering) based one. There are no examinations on this course. Practitioners in the industry need to be multi-skilled, with the ability to draw upon a wide range of different fields in order to have a long lasting and rewarding career in the industry. This course has been designed to help you accomplish this.

What will I study? The two-year UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production is equivalent in size and value to three full A Levels. It is designed to prepare you for employment in the music industry, selfemployment or for progression to higher education. Year 1 comprises the Diploma, and most learners progress to the Extended Diploma in Year 2. You will undertake a wide range of project work to establish your interests and strengths, before progressing to either a performance based specialist pathway, or a production (recording, producing, engineering) based one. What will I study? The course is designed to be as practical as possible and is delivered through workshops, rehearsal and performance. On this course you will participate in acting, movement and voice workshops and must be willing to attempt all three skills to pass the course.

What will I study? On this course you will study the core aspects of Stage Management and Technical Theatre structured around the creation, production and support of specific projects and the development of your vocational skills. During the course you will explore and develop your creative production skills in stage management, mask and prop-making, stage design and construction, and lighting, sound and video.

What can I do after this course? This course can provide a pathway to Level 3 courses and provide excellent training for vocational progression in performing arts and other related industries. If you do not yet have GCSE Maths or English Language at grade C or above, you will be required to study these subjects alongside your main programme.

Entry Requirements Entry requirements are normally: GCSE grade C/4 or above in Mathematics, English Language and Science (3 sciences or double award).

What will I study? This course is a one year course which leads to two GCSEs. It comprises of the three areas of science: biology, chemistry and physics. They are taught and examined by the Board in two separate sections: Life Science and The Environment, which covers biology and some chemistry topics and Physical Science, which covers physics and the other chemistry topics.

What will I study? The Foundation Diploma in Applied Science is the core qualification studied in the first year of a Level 3 Programme of Study in Applied Science. It is the perfect qualification for learners who want to continue their studies in science beyond Level 2 or GCSE and provides a solid foundation of learning across all science disciplines before an optional pathway is chosen in year two. The Foundation Diploma combines the key areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics to give you a well-rounded practical and theoretical understanding of the Applied Sciences. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a varied programme of activities that can be undertaken by anyone aged 14 to 24 regardless of their ability. An Apprenticeship is a real job with training so you can earn while you learn, and pick up some nationally recognised qualifications as you go. There are two types of Apprenticeships that the college delivers: • Day Release • Work-Based Day release involves attendance at college for one day a week and on average four days in the workplace. Most Apprenticeships are however work-based which means that they are entirely delivered in the work place, and there is no college attendance. Apprenticeships take between one and five years to complete, and cover around 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries. HOW TO APPLY FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP Option 1: Find an Employer You may decide to generate your own Apprenticeship, after researching the college offer. A full list of these Apprenticeships can be found opposite. To help you to generate a job offer we can send you a CV template, an example cover letter template, and tips on how to gain an Apprenticeship. If you already have a job contact, we can support you into turning this into an Apprenticeship. Option 2: Register with the Employer and Recruitment Advisor If you are interested in gaining an Apprenticeship from the age of 16 then you can register your details on the Apprenticeship Talent Bank. If a vacancy meets your designated sector, location and wage it will be sent to you via email along with a link to apply. Suggestions will be made if areas need to be improved. COMMON APPRENTICESHIP MYTHS APPRENTICESHIPS ARE ONLY FOR PEOPLE WITH BAD GRADES Apprenticeships are simply an alternative route into employment and offer the chance to learn and earn at the same time. As employees, apprentices need to be reliable, committed and motivated, and the best learners are picked. I WON’T BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT/I WON’T BE PAID Your employer will cover your wage and Apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Apprenticeship Wage, which is currently £3.50 per hour, for the first year of the apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over in their first year. However, many companies across different sectors pay more than this. APPRENTICESHIPS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IN CERTAIN SECTORS The days where apprenticeships were only available in certain industries are long gone. Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of industry sectors with employers from large, national companies to smaller, local companies. Apprenticeships are available at Intermediate, Advanced, Higher and Degree Levels, covering more than 170 industries and 1,500 job roles.

APPRENTICESHIPS WILL NEGATIVLY AFFECT MY FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS Employers increasingly value consider apprenticeships as a viable career route as it means applicants will have experience of the workplace and a qualification.

I NEED EXPERIENCE TO GET AN APPRENTICESHIP Apprenticeships provide the opportunity for people to gain first-hand experience and to develop workplace skills. Employers recognise applicants won’t necessarily have previous work experience and are more often looking for motivation, reliability and a real desire to learn. BUSINESSES ARE NOT HIRING APPRENTICES Apprenticeships are a national government priority, and the number of apprentices that businesses are hiring has increased. In fact, we often find that good vacancies are not being filled due to lack of suitable applicants.

I WON’T GET A GOOD QUALIFICATION

ONCE I HAVE FINISHED MY APPRENTICESHIP I WILL BE OUT OF A JOB

There are many types of apprenticeships, providing different levels of qualifications – Intermediate, Advanced and Higher. The formal qualification that you undertake will go along-side the industry experience you will gain, which will prove to be invaluable.

You may be offered the chance to stay with your employer following your apprenticeship – in reality, 71% of apprentices do just that. If not you will have the increased work experience and confidence to progress in your career.

IF I DO AN APPRENTICESHIP I’LL GET STUCK IN THE SAME INDUSTRY Apprenticeships aren’t just available in a variety of industries but, different areas of the business too. Many offer transferable skills, and most importantly first-hand experience of day-to-day work life, which will stay with you throughout your career. APPRENTICESHIPS ARE ONLY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16. There is no upper age limit.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING AN APPRENTICESHIP? • You will earn money – you will receive a wage from day one of your apprenticeship • You won’t rack up debt – there are no tuition fees for apprentices to pay • You will receive practical and relevant experience, training and gain a recognised, relevant qualification • They will build your confidence – if you are already in a job, an apprenticeship cannot only provide you with a nationally recognised qualification, it can also improve your skills and build your confidence • This is the start of your career – 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their apprenticeship (includes 2% self-employed) and 71% of apprentices stay with the same employer • 82% said their apprenticeship had improved their ability to do the job and 79% said that their career prospects had improved
