They are very modern campuses that are designed to help you excel in your studies. Station Plaza has five floors of classroom and work space and is dominated by the central atrium. Thriving Arts Community Hastings has always had a great reputation for the arts and the college has played a significant role in that for a number of years. We have a whole floor dedicated to art, design and craft. We have an array of equipment for you to use including printing presses, pottery wheels, a kiln, photography studios and a darkroom. We also have Macs and computers with the most up to date Adobe software, and 3D digital design software. Our University Centre, which sits proudly on the fifth floor, also boasts 6 full BA (Hons) in the arts providing exceptional progression routes for you.

We’re going green! We’ve made positive changes to our campuses to help reduce our carbon footprint and protect our environment. Towards the end of 2018 we installed 900 Solarworld PV panels to the roof of our Ore Valley campus. The solar panels generate an estimated 237,500kwh of solar energy per year, providing over 70% of our electricity needs. Our coffee shops and canteens at Plaza and Ore are plastic free. We don’t use out plastic straws or cutlery which means we are not contributing to the amount of single-use plastic going landfill.

Our supported education students lead the way with recycling their food waste and look after our ecofriendly composter. We are replacing old, traditional light bulbs with more energy efficient LED bulbs and our atrium has a Ground Heat Source System installed to help keep the space cool or warm, depending on the time of year, which helps to slash our heating and energy bills.

Ore Valley is perfectly set up for students who want to learn the construction trade, no matter their gender. The workshops are big enough for you to work comfortably, there are always plenty of tools, and the tutors are great! Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m up with the high flyers in the class and my grades are really good. I want to have my own plumbing business in the future after I have built-up my experience and knowledge in the industry.

Sport and leisure

Station Plaza is home to our Coast Restaurant and training kitchens where our hospitality and catering students are able to learn their culinary craft. Coast Restaurant has a 5 out of 5 rating on Tripadvisor! This is because of its cosy and friendly setting, fantastic food and popular themed menu evenings.

On the first floor at Plaza we have our fullyequipped fitness suite.

Our students are able to practise their dinner service, bartending and barista skills. Next door in the training kitchens our students are able to prepare, cook and serve three course meals. Our kitchens are modern and spacious and are fitted with high-tech commercial computer controlled rational ovens, vacuum packers, and sous vide water baths - the types you’d expect to find in high quality restaurant kitchens.

Science labs Our third floor is dedicated to our A-Level subjects. We have an A-Level common room for you to spend free periods, as well as modern science labs with well stocked equipment.

Coffee shops, canteen, and Subway There are plenty of places for you to grab breakfast, lunch, snacks, or a cup of coffee before or after lessons. At Plaza and Ore Valley we have Coast Coffee which serves Costa coffee and a selection of sandwiches and paninis. Our college canteen, Coast Kitchen, serves freshly cooked hot meals. We also have an on-site Subway at Plaza, meaning you can still enjoy your sub of the day!

Sports and Public Services students are able to train, exercise, and learn using the equipment and machinery. The gym is also open to members of the public who pay monthly or annual memberships. As a sport or public services student you will also have access to Horntye Sports complex, featuring an indoor sports hall, astroturf and cricket pitch. All of our students also have free access to the swimming pool at Summerfields Leisure Centre before college starts. Both Summerfields and Horntye are just a short walk along Bohemia Road.

Art shop We also have a fully -stocked art shop so you’ll be able to purchase all kinds of equipment and supplies to help you create your masterpieces. What makes it even better is the student discount.

LRC Sometimes you just need a quiet space to buckle down and focus. That’s why we have designed our campuses to have accessible Learning Resource Centre. Both LRCs feature lots of computers, plenty of books, and quiet study pods, as well as friendly and super helpful staff who are on hand to point you in the right direction for assignment research, referencing and proofreading.

Each year our students succeed in and win lots of local and national awards. We regularly compete in UK Skills competitions and have helped our students gain valuable experience in their industries, setting them up for their careers.

Since merging to become East Sussex College we have been able to offer the widest range of academic and vocational courses in the whole of the South East.

We’re an important part of the community We love our community and like to think that we play an important role in making Hastings a great place to live, study, and play. Our Plaza atrium is the perfect venue for a number of community events such as Gin festivals, awards nights, Christmas carol concerts, gala dinners, and political debates. Our Public Services department also work very closely with Hastings War Veterans to host an annual Remembrance Day service. Early in 2019 we took over the day-today running of two popular community venues in the town, the Stade Hall and the Classroom on the Coast. We’ve since been able to offer community based events such as cooking demos and literacy festivals.

Hastings is the place to go if you’re looking to study vocational and technical qualifications. If you have an idea about the types of subjects you’d like to explore further at university or start to work in, then you’ll be able to do that with us.

Location, location, location! Our Station Plaza campus is a 30second walk away from Priory Meadow, five-minute walk to the beach and a ten-minute walk to the park. This means that you have lots of options at lunch time, or even during your free periods! Hastings is full of local businesses who actively look for students to fill job roles for part-time work, and work placements! Hastings is a great place to study and work, and with Ore Valley a ten-minute bus journey away there is nothing stopping our students reach their full potential.

You’ll be given plenty of time outside of your lessons to train and practise, then have Wednesday afternoons for competitive matches. We offer men’s football, in partnership with Hastings United Football Club, as well as rugby, and netball. So no matter what subjects you’re studying, you can join one of our academies.

Things happen all-year-round We have a jam-packed calendar of events once you become an ESC student. During the first couple of weeks of term we have our freshers’ events giving you the chance to get to know your fellow students, sign up for the sports academies and societies. Various events take place throughout the Autumn up until Christmas such as Vegan festivals and Christmas markets. Then into the new year we regularly host fundraising and charity events, relaxation and stress busting days.

Industry placements are an integral part of our courses. This hands on experience helps to bring your learning to life and demonstrates to employers that you are able to carry out the tasks that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re being taught in class. We work with some amazing local and national employers.

Placements All subject areas include an industry placement from vocational subjects such as Brickwork and Hairdressing, to subjects such Business.

Our campuses have helpful staff on hand to provide information on employability skills and work experience opportunities. Teachers also have industry contacts and will create work experience opportunities for keen students.

Industry experience comes in many forms, for example, Health & Social Care students will work in hospitals, nursing homes, primary schools or day care centres.

How does my child apply to college? Your child can easily apply to ESC online, by post (application form included in this prospectus) or in person. We accept applications until September. Your child can apply for more than one course and have more than one interview. On receipt of your child’s application, an interview date is sent out. At the interview, we make sure your child has chosen the right course for them and provide details about the course or programme. Parents are encouraged to attend. Usually an offer is made with conditions such as GCSE grade requirements. Occasionally a referral will be made to consider alternative options. Instructions, learner support and enrolment details will be sent to you during the summer holidays about what to do on and after GCSE results day.

What financial support is available?

The induction period is there to make the transition from school to college as easy as possible. It ensures your child is on the right programme, settling into college life and creating excellent relationships with their peers and tutors. For term dates please visit www.escg.ac.uk

Tuition and exam fees are free for learners aged 16-18. However, you may need to pay for equipment and materials relevant to the course. If you are aged 19 and over, there will be a course fee. Financial help is available including bursaries, travel grants and discounts, Care to Learn grants and Discretionary Learner Support. Students may also be eligible for a Further Education Free Meal. What support is available for my child at college? When your son/daughter starts college they will be allocated a personal tutor. This will be the key contact for you and your child during their time at college. Many students require additional support while they study with us. Our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team helps students with learning difficulties and disabilities, and can assist with the transition from school to college, in-class support, assistive technology and more.

What are A-Levels?

Tutorial System

Advanced Level qualifications, better known as A-Levels, are two year courses that are perfect for helping you get into university. You’ll be able to choose three subjects to study and you will usually be assessed by exams. Our A-Level programme follows the linear structure which means your exams will be at the end of your two years, rather than at the end of each module or year.

Why should you study A-Levels with East Sussex College? You’ll have everything you need! The third floor at our Station Plaza campus is home to our Sixth Form. Our modern building means you’ll have the luxury of learning in clean and comfortable classrooms, all fitted with interactive white boards. Our modern science labs are well stocked with equipment and materials, and our A-Level art students have the freedom to use all of the art facilities on the fourth floor which include a photography studio, dark room, and printing presses.

There are lots of quiet spaces for you to work outside of class as well.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is a popular spot as it has thousands of books and journals, access to lots of computers and quiet study pods. Our friendly LRC team are always happy to help you with finding the right book for your essay research and they’ll also be happy to proof-read your work before you hand it in.

We also have an A-Level common room; a dedicated space for our sixth form students to relax and socialise between lessons.

A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work and we realise that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When you enrol with us you will be assigned a tutor. They will be aligned with the subject you have chosen and be able to give you expert support and guidance with those subjects.

Academic Support We can provide academic support in the form of study and revision workshops. These enable you to focus on developing your skills and knowledge of your subject and take place throughout the year and more regularly as we approach exams season.

UCAS Application Support If your goal is to head to university after A-Levels then we’ll be able to support you with your UCAS application. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to help you with each step of the process, from setting up your account to writing and refining your personal statement.

Outstanding opportunities... We also offer you the chance to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ is a Level 3 qualification that is worth half an A-Level and will help to boost your UCAS application and develop your knowledge in a particular area of interest. You can choose a topic, carry out research, and then write either a 5,000 word essay or create a ‘product’ and write a 1,000 word essay, followed by a short presentation. The skills you’ll develop as a result of doing an EPQ, such as project planning, decision making, record keeping, evaluation, presenting are invaluable in most jobs and uni courses. As a guide an A* in the EPQ is worth roughly 70 UCAS points, an A 60, B 50 and so on.

Learn outside the classroom

We’re all in it together

Your learning will also take place outside of the classroom with a number of work experience opportunities, guest talks, and trips.

We have a close-knit sixth form that has fantastic progression rates - giving our students the opportunity to move onto the things they want to do next - including their first choice university, start an apprenticeship, or go off into the world of work.

Each year you’ll be able to take advantage of our excellent links with local and national employers to gain valuable work experience in an industry related to your studies. In the past students have worked Industry for accountancy firms, worked in placements, marketing departments, worked in local hospitals, worked with local news guest talks and outlets in print, TV and radio, and industry trips worked with lawyers and solicitors. These opportunities not only give you valuable hands-on experience, it also looks great on your CV and UCAS application.

Our students always tell us how friendly and welcoming our sixth form is. It is a place where they’re able to meet new life-long friends and they are able to mature and gain independence. The feel of the large, modern building, the interaction with the tutors, and the in-depth subject knowledge is the perfect stepping stone to university.

We often welcome university lecturers and industry experts into the college to give talks about their jobs, their industry, and to give you an insight into what the industry might look like in the future. We also give you the opportunity to get involved with lots of trips throughout the year. We put on coaches to the UCAS fairs in London and Brighton so you can chat to and find out more about university courses up and down the country. Our subject areas also organise course related trips throughout the year. Our students often visit the capital to experience the Law courts, parliament, banks, marketing agencies, and tourist attractions.

It’s not all work, work, work! As we mentioned earlier, there are plenty of activities for you to get involved with outside of the classroom. Whether it is joining one of our sports academies becoming a student rep or starting your own club or society there is plenty to keep you busy.

So how do you choose your A-Level subjects? Some of the best advice we’ve ever heard is to plan backwards. Work out a rough plan of what job you’d like to have in ten years. From there you can look into the details of whether you’d need a degree to do this, and the subjects you need to study at A-Level to get you onto that degree.

Play to your strengths There is nothing wrong with studying the subjects your good at. If you’re predicted 8s and 9s in English, then perhaps consider taking A-Level English Language & Literature.

Don’t get bored The linear structure means that you’ll study A-Levels for two years. So it’s sensible to choose three subjects that you’re going to enjoy and maintain your interest in right up until the end.

Do your uni research As well as researching the courses you want to study at uni, find out about the entry requirements you’ll need to get in. You’ll also be able to find out what facilities they have, what the student lifestyle is like, and whether you’d like to study there.

Facilitating subjects If you’re the type of person that likes to keep their options open, then perhaps facilitating subjects could be a good option. Many of the top universities look for facilitating subjects such as Geography, History, Physics, or French, because they equip you with critical thinking skills, the ability to research data, analyse data, and you are able to demonstrate your ability to learn and retain information.

Employment? “I wanted to have a gap year so decided to get a paid job as the Student President - it’s a great way to save up for uni and get experience!”

The popular route for many students after completing their A-Levels is to study at university. Students go on to study subjects that are related to the ones they have studied at college, or take the opportunity to specialise in a subject, for instance Sports Journalism, Architecture, or Sound Production. You will be able to apply to university in your second year of A-Levels, but there is no harm in looking at courses and universities you’d like to study during Year 11 or in your first year at college. You will give yourself plenty of time to get an idea of what the university is like, to research the types of courses that are out there, and to discover what types of jobs the course can lead on to. Our advice is to apply to as many universities as you can (although there will be a fee for your UCAS application), and then you will be able to keep your options open. Once you have applied, the university will make you a conditional offer to their course, based on your predicted grades at the time you apply. Once you have opened your A-Level results, and you meet the conditional offer, you will then be able to accept their offer.

You may feel that you’re ready to start earning a salary and begin working full-time after A-Levels. Lots of our past students have opted for full-time work rather than uni or an apprenticeship, and this may be right for you too.

You will have gained Advanced Level qualifications in three subjects, showing that you Lucy Head, A-Level Student are able to learn and retain information. You may be able to find fulltime positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject you have studied, even thanks to their industry placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, galleries, accountancy firms, solicitors, and language schools.

Since a few changes were made to apprenticeships, more students are finishing their A-Levels and are turning to this work-based qualification. Students are able to study Higher Apprenticeship which allows them to gain the equivalent level qualification to a degree, while gaining valuable experience in the workplace. Students have started higher apprenticeships in a number of areas including Engineering, Software Development, and Public Relations.

T-Levels are brand new technical study programmes and are set to become one of the three major options available to you after finishing your GCSEs, alongside A-Levels and Apprenticeships. Digital Environments - You will learn more about computing systems including physical, virtual and cloud, you will understand the landscape of network connectivity, and understand concepts such as SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (platform as a service) and IaaS (infrastructure as a Service).

The thing I like the most, apart from the tutors - they are the best - would be the machining, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so fun! When you first learn the skills it is quite nerve-wracking. But once you have practised a few times, you can create some really great pieces and take pride in what you are doing.

During this course you will develop a range of skills and knowledge across the construction industry, helping you to specialise in one particular area. MOTOR VEHICLE COURSES The Motor Vehicle industry in the UK is booming and is set to keep on going in the future. The total market value for UK primary car body repairs is expected to grow by 14% from £4.75 billion in 2018 to £5.43bn in 2023. When you add that to the £3.65 billion car manufacturing industry, there is plenty of opportunity for employment in this sector. We have our very own, dedicated motor vehicle workshops at the Automotive Training Centre, along Ivy House Lane just north of Hastings town centre. Our two large garage spaces are kitted out with high-tech, industry standard equipment, the types you’d expect to see in all top vehicle repair garages.

As well as gaining hands on experience at college you’ll also be able to understand the industry and put your skills to the test during dealerships tours, industry expert talks, and industry work placements.

We also have some of the best tutors around. They have years of industry experience having worked on thousands of different models of vehicles.

Last year our motor vehicle students completely repaired and renovated a 1986 Robin Reliant so that it could enter into a charity rally across Europe.

CREATIVE & DESIGN COURSES The Creative industry in the UK now generates more than £100bn a year for the economy and employs more than 2m people. The industry continued to power the growth of the UK’s workforce last year as new jobs developed faster in this sector than in any other. Our Creative & Design courses will give you the opportunity to study a whole range of artistic disciplines including fine art, graphic design, photography, animation, fashion, and film. We have a whole floor dedicated to our creative subjects. The fourth floor at Plaza is where you’ll find spacious art studios, equipped with everything you need to explore your subject. We have printing presses, pottery wheels, a kiln, metal workshops, photography studios, a darkroom, and the latest adobe software for digital work.

You will be able to gain valuable experience during your course through client set briefs and industry placements with local, national, and international employers such as the Hastings Contemporary art gallery and De La Warr Pavilion. Each year our art department create and produce a tabloid newspaper. They are responsible for the whole project from planning to print - everything including creating content and design and layout. During this course you will learn the essential skills and in-depth knowledge you need to be able to put together comprehensive training programmes for clients. You will use your passion for exercise to understand the principles of fitness so that you can pass on your knowledge to others. You will learn how to conduct fitness testing and learn a range of advanced fitness techniques. Theory and practical sessions will take place in our fully-equipped gym, where you will be able to consult with clients about their fitness goals, and then create and deliver training and fitness programmes to meet their needs. Once you have completed this course you will be qualified to take personal training sessions and could find employment within a gym or on a self-employed basis.

We have fantastic industry links with lots of local and regional organisations which means there are plenty of opportunities for you to experience the industry. We actively encourage and support you to complete relevant additional training to make you highly employable after college. During this course you will be able to develop all the skills you need to become an effective coach and help improve performance. You will study the Sports, Coaching and Physical Activity sector, while building on your previous knowledge and experience of coaching in your chosen sport. This qualification is a perfect stepping stone to a range of occupations often through the route of higher education.

During this course you will use your passion for the great outdoors to develop your knowledge of industry and work towards a career in this area. You will learn about the types of activities that are available to outdoor adventurers, develop a range of skills that will help you work towards becoming an instructor, and have the opportunity to put your learning into practice during a range of outdoor adventure activities. PUBLIC SERVICES COURSES The Public Services play a vital role in the welfare and safety of people here in the UK and abroad, on the front-line and behind the scenes. There are 5.36 million people employed in the public sector across the UK. Of this figure, there are 122,000 Police Officers, 146,000 people in the Armed Forces, 30,100 Firefighters and 26,000 Paramedics. Our Public Services courses will teach you everything you need to know about the uniformed public services and help you to become an independent thinker and problem solver two skills that are vital for this industry. We have a fantastic range of facilities on-site and nearby for you to test your physical and mental fitness. Plaza gym is fully equipped with modern fitness machinery, Horntye Sports Complex and Summerfields Leisure Centre have a range of facilities including an astroturf and swimming pool, and our natural surroundings of Hastings East and West

hills provide a short but challenging workout. We also regularly trek across the Seven Sisters; camp, canoe and rock climb at local outdoor activity centres; and towards the end of the year, we take on the ultimate test by climbing Mount Snowdon during an expedition on Snowdonia. Our Public Services department also plays a very big part in the community. We often visit local schools to help manage and run their events, we work closely with local authorities such as the police and fire service to help them with their training, and each November, we organise

a Remembrance Parade to mark the anniversary of the First World War. Your learning will be enhanced during a number of trips abroad, most notably our annual trip to the AuschwitzBirkenau concentration camps in Poland. All of our tutors are experts role model the behaviours that you will need to adopt in order to work in the public services. They are expert teachers and have a range of industry and university contacts for you to tap into once you have finished your course.

You will have developed many of the key knowledge, skills, and behaviours that employers are looking for which will make you a prime candidate for employment.

You could become a fullyqualified teacher or study child psychology. Perhaps youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to study sports science or learn more about analysing performance or you could study degrees in Criminology or Policing studies.

What are Specialist courses?

We have a range of specialist courses that have been designed to help you gain the qualifications you need to progress on to our college courses, help you re-engage with education, or help you to build confidence and independence - gaining some valuable skills for life. We have a course that will help you to build your confidence, meet new people, and gain some valuable work experience and employability skills. There are other courses that will help you to become more independent, learn about healthy living, learn how to cook a range of basic recipes, and learn to manage your own money.

Prince’s Trust Team Programme Course Code: 17522 / 17754 / 17755 Our Prince’s Trust ‘Team’ Programme is a 14week personal development course perfect for you if you are aged between 16-25, and not currently in full-time employment, education or training. The course is designed to build your self-confidence, independence and skills, along with CV writing, interview and employability skills. You will also be given support and guidance during, and after the course, to help you find opportunities in work, education and training. You will also get to go on an action-packed residential week, participate in work experience and are given the chance to take part in community projects. During two of the weeks you will complete a work experience placement, giving you valuable experience to put on your CV and talk about during job interviews.

We pack a lot into our Team programme, designed to help you uncover your hidden talents and improve your confidence, as well as gain a nationallyrecognised qualification, while developing your English and maths skills. As part of the course, we also spend some time developing your interview and CV skills to ensure your confidence is sky-high when taking the next step. It’s completely free and won’t affect your Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Supported Education Course Code: 2401 This course has been designed to support young people with severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities, to help them develop greater independence and employability skills. You will be taught and supported by our specialist staff in our dedicated supported education area. You will have access to enabling technology such as task prompters, and a real-life home skills area where you can practise your domestic skills and master the use of household appliances. We also have a safe haven, chill out zone, low arousal environment, sensory room, and creative arts environment. We are also very proud to hold National Autistic Society accreditation for our excellent support for young people with Autism.

We will help you develop skills for everyday life and build your confidence by taking part in events and shows! Our facilities are fantastic - Resources include a safe haven, a chill out zone, a low arousal environment, sensory room, and a creative arts and employability skills environment. You will also develop employability skills to take part in work experience. If you want to gain further qualifications, we can help and guide you to progress onto other mainstream courses. We offer an additional Enrichment programme, available for up to five sessions per week.

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can apply to study more than one course on your application form (a copy of this is at the back of this prospectus). You will have the chance to discuss your options with us at interview. We also offer bookable careers guidance appointments for you to explore your options. The most important thing is you eventually enrol on the course that’s right for you - we are here to help you.

Interviews If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time, as a general rule, these are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents/carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers At the end of your interview, you will be given written confirmation of any exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once your place is confirmed, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin. After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.
