The thing I like most about teaching is the light bulb moments. I like the realisation that my students get when they walk out of the classroom knowing something they had no idea about an hour and a half ago. When you overhear them telling their friends that your lesson was really really interesting, that’s a really nice moments for me.

Our tutors are industry professionals and want to help you succeed to university or into the world of work, and you will succeed, if you work hard and stay dedicated.

The college has definitely helped me to prepare for university. Tutors have come into to college to talk to us about it, we’ve had people from UCAS help us with our personal statements and then our main tutors are also able to help us neaten them up before we send them off with our applications. I’m planning to go to Staffordshire University where I’ll be studying networks security management, which will be a four year course with a year of industry built in it. Afterwards I’ll be able to advance into that industry of work, hopefully working for Cisco or Amazon webservers. Level 3 IT Student

I chose the Foundation Construction Skills course because I wanted to get an idea of what each area was like, then I can focus on one in particular and hopefully build a career in it. The teachers are really friendly and they’re really easy to get on with. They know a lot about their subject too, and pass on really good tips from where they’ve had years of experience in the industry. They also push you and stretch your learning so we are not just settling down with the easy stuff - it’s a nice challenge.

I work at Torr Scientific, a local engineering company, as a scientific glassblower, which is quite unusual, but really cool. Recently, I have taken on more responsibility and been able to teach one of the new trainees some of the skills I have learnt. I have enjoyed the past year at work and college. A typical college day is usually in the workshop doing practical tasks on the machines, whether that is turning, milling, welding or fabricating various tools to specification of engineers’ drawings. We work closely with the local industry, ensuring that our courses cover everything the industry expects from its employees. Hastings is a hotbed for engineering, especially vacuum and photonics technology. This partnership keeps our courses industry relevant great for student progression to university or as an apprentice.

Ore Valley is home to our engineering workshops with industry standard machinery and welding bays, as well as classrooms for theoretical study and computer aided-design.

Work experience is a vital part of your time at college whether you study A-levels or a Diploma.

As part of my Level 2 Business course, we have to go on work experience for a week. I found a placement with Santander in Hastings. I really enjoyed my week with them and afterwards my boss Ian, invited me for an interview and I got a full-time job! This is a really exciting opportunity for me and one that I probably wouldn’t have had if I hadn’t been on this course. Thank you!

Businesses we work with. We are always building new relationships with businesses and continually strengthening existing ones. Numerous courses have been endorsed by employers because they recognise that the College has a reputation and consistency for producing highly skilled people, who are trained effectively, and who can help businesses and the economy grow.

The Carpentry and Joinery courses explain to the students exactly what is required of them while instilling core values, so that they can leave college with the essential skills they need for a more sustainable future. Timber Frame

The Travel and Tourism courses are fantastic. The students that we’ve worked with came with a tremendous amount of knowledge about the tourism industry, and were a welcome addition to the team during busy periods. We recognise the importance and relevance of work experience, so we are proud to work with the college. National Trust

The Engineering courses here provide learners with an excellent range of skills and attributes which are essential for meeting our workforce needs for now and the future. Kurt J. Lesker
