CHINA

This year marks the 10th year since I graduated from Sussex Downs College. Many things have happened since then, but it is nice to take a more careful look back and start to appreciate that the SDC days have actually offered much more than I had realized at my graduation. To me, SDC was the transition point in my journey; it connected my education back in China to the undergraduate and masters experience in the U.K. and the ongoing PhD study in the U.S. It built a foundation for the academic kit you need to develop for university, and it equipped you with the skills to deal with stress, to balance coursework and extra-curricular activities, and most importantly, to manage relationships with peers

I started studying at Sussex Downs College in 2005. I studied English, Maths and IT as my goal was to study Software Engineering at Brighton University. In 2006, I was accepted by Brighton University and graduated with honours. Right after graduating, I started studying a MSc in Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh.

Once I graduated from my master’s programme, I emigrated to the United States and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. Within a few weeks of arriving in the US, I was able to get a job at a consulting firm working for technology companies such as Kabam, Facebook and Google. After a couple of years, I started working for a mobile cybersecurity company, where I was quickly promoted to the role of Chief Architect. In 2015 I founded

and instructors for your higher education. So on a personal note, SDC really provided a comfortable environment that cushioned all the impacts down the road. To many of us at SDC, our tutor Jo was so much more than a personal tutor, she was a mother eagle. She protects, helps and equips you to become a grown-up – she forgives your occasional lack of motivation, but she fences with your indolence and lack of discipline, and she never tolerates with you giving up on yourself. I am now completing my PhD on natural hazards, specializing in landslides, at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the U.S. SDC stays with me as I now use many of the teaching and tutoring techniques that I learnt from Jo with my undergraduate students!

a cybersecurity start-up, along with a friend of mine, in Silicon Valley’s competitive market. Within two years of starting the company, our start-up was acquired by Tenable Network Security. Our product is now being used globally by many large organizations. I am currently serving as Director of Engineering at Tenable Network Security, leading a large distributed team of engineers. During my time at Sussex Downs College, I was guided very clearly towards achieving my aims. My tutor and teachers invested a lot of time in ensuring that I was making progress and on the right track, and they provided a level of support that I haven’t experienced since. Without their help and guidance, I would not have been able to lay the foundation needed for my further studies and career.

“I studied on the English Language Plus programme. The best thing about this course is the way you learn English by doing different activities not just learning it by heart. I like Eastbourne because it has the best weather in England and it is conveniently close to other cities like Brighton and London. In the future I plan to study International Business and Economics in Spain. This course is going to be helpful to give me the opportunity of doing an Erasmus programme. I have received a lot of individual teaching which has been very helpful to get me prepared for the Cambridge CAE exam.”

“I am studying Maths, Art & Design and Business on the International Study Year.

“I am studying on the English Language Plus course and I have enjoyed meeting people from lots of countries on the course. The people of Lewes are very friendly and Lewes has lovely historical buildings and an old castle.

Lewes is a really nice town and small enough that you can walk everywhere and plan trips spontaneously. My plan is to become a rollercoaster constructor and I want to go to university to study Graphic Design in Germany. Sussex Downs College is helping me to improve my English and the Art & Design course is similar to the one I studied in Germany so I will be well prepared for university. The teaching at Sussex Downs College is really interactive and the courses are fun because of that and make it easier to learn.”

I need to improve my English because I want to go to university and study my degree in English. I go to the gym in Lewes Sports Centre and have been on a number of excursions. The teachers are very caring and I love the style of teaching which is very interactive.”
