We are delighted that you are interested in finding out more about studying at Sussex Downs College. We are a high quality college, based in the beautiful South Downs area of South East England. We have three campuses; two on the coast at Eastbourne and one in the historic County Town of Lewes. Following our last British Council inspection, Sussex Downs College was awarded the second highest number of publishable points of excellence†of any English language school, college or university in the UK. We have over 5,000 full time UK students with 700 international students from over 70 countries. This rich mix of cultures and backgrounds makes for a vibrant, exciting and welcoming learning community. We are very proud of our international students and their achievements. Examination results are consistently outstanding with 100% of students passing the final year of their A levels with two thirds achieving A* to B grades. Our students have progressed to Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and many other top universities and conservatoires. We are in the top 10% of colleges in England, and we have been recognised for our outstanding provision through the achievement of prestigious awards, including a British Council Beacon award for International Student Support. Lewes is a historic county town with a magnificent castle, old narrow streets full of interesting shops and cosy restaurants and cafés. Lewes is considered a safe and welcoming town by our international students and the College is only a ten minute walk from the town centre. The cosmopolitan university city of Brighton & Hove can be reached in just 13 minutes by train from Lewes.

Eastbourne is a vibrant and world famous seaside resort with five miles of unspoilt beaches. It is a fun place to be an international student with a lively nightlife and a great study environment. Eastbourne has received many national awards, such as “Best UK Resort”, “Tourism Destination of the Year” and “Most Welcoming Town in Britain”. We are extremely proud of our students’ results, which are consistently high. Our students regularly achieve an impressive 100% success rate at GCE A level. We have a long history in preparing our students for a range of English language exams. As a large IELTS test centre and an authorised Cambridge Exam centre, students are able to prepare for and take their exam on the same campus. Our students achieved an overall pass rate of 82% for the Cambridge exams (PET, FCE and CAE) on our Eastbourne campus in 2010-2011. 68% of our students achieved IELTS 6.0 or above in the 2010 to 2011 academic year.

For your safety and comfort, all of our accommodation is thoroughly checked and monitored by our team in accordance with the standards outlined in the British Council’s Accreditation Scheme.

We welcome students who share our passion for sport. You will be able to participate in the sport of your choice at the level you enjoy.

Sussex Downs College is a Centre of Vocational Excellence in Sport and offers an exciting programme which allows you to combine your studies with the opportunity to develop your sporting ability at a high level.

Joining one of our sports teams is an excellent way to keep fit and make new friends, whilst practising your English with native speakers. Each campus is equipped with a wide range of sporting amenities and there are leisure centres, swimming pools, gyms and athletics training facilities located on or next to each campus. The towns of Lewes and Eastbourne both have rich sporting traditions. Each town has football, hockey and rugby teams, and you will be in easy reach of London Premiership football and rugby clubs. Eastbourne also hosts a major international tennis tournament each year. The nearby city of Brighton and Hove has championship winning cricket and basketball teams and a Championship football team.

Sports Academies* are offered in Rugby, Women’s Football, Netball and Hockey and combine weekly training with high level coaching and competition. You will also work towards a City and Guilds Principles of Coaching Award. Sports Academies are open to students studying on full-time courses from September to April and are offered subject to a successful interview on arrival. We require you to have a strong desire to improve your current level of performance and welcome students who are already playing for a club or at regional or national level. Supplementary fees for these programmes apply and vary depending on the academy you choose and the cost of training and kit. If you wish to join one of the Sports Academies, please provide details of your sporting achievements when you make your application.

Make the most of your summer holiday by taking part in our popular English Language Young Learner course. You will have the chance to improve your English, whilst making friends with other young learners from many different countries. Eastbourne is a great place for young learners in the summer as it is a popular and safe seaside resort with miles of unspoilt beaches and many outdoor activities. Our vocational courses will give you the skills and knowledge needed to enter the workplace or university. You will benefit from quality tuition from highly qualified teachers who have considerable industry experience. You will be able to develop your skills in realistic working environments relevant to your course. These include Sussex Downs College’s own travel agency, restaurant, beauty salons and workshops, all of which are equipped to industry standards. Our vocational courses are highly regarded by employers and universities and our results are excellent. Each year students at Sussex Downs College achieve national and regional awards in areas such as Catering, Hair and Beauty, Motor Vehicle Repair, Construction and Electrical.

You can choose from a wide variety of subjects, offered at different levels depending on your experience and ability.

There are five types of Level 3 vocational courses you can choose from: Advanced Diploma Equivalent to 3.5 A levels, an Advanced Diploma will qualify you to enter university or go directly into your chosen career. You can combine this with one AS level BTEC Extended Diploma Equivalent to three A levels, an Extended Diploma will qualify you to enter university or go directly into your chosen career

The Art and Design Foundation Diploma is a practical and exciting one year course designed to fully prepare you for an art or design based university programme. You will study alongside UK students, giving you the opportunity to develop your English language skills and to experience British culture. All tutors are practising artists, designers and craftsmen, who will support you throughout your course and encourage you to develop your creative skills. The main areas of this course are Graphics and Illustration, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art, 3D Design and Crafts, and there are also opportunities to specialise further. Another important element of this course is Contextual Studies, which includes the History of Art and Critical Studies (the study of society and theories of art production). This theoretical aspect of the course will enable you to critically assess and discuss works of art. As part of your course you will also be able to take part in field trips, visit relevant art exhibitions and galleries, as well as developing your own portfolio of work. Our students have high success rates at gaining places at top UK universities and art colleges, such as Central Saint Martins, Edinburgh University, Goldsmiths College, Kingston University, London College of Communications, London College of Fashion, Ravensbourne, the University of Brighton, and Winchester School of Art.

During this two-year programme you will study many complementary therapies, including reflexology, aromatherapy, massage and Oriental diagnostic skills for the detection of illness. You will also undertake a clinical work placement, as well as researching the theoretical foundations of complementary healthcare.

A foundation degree is a university level course that will lead to a foundation degree qualification of FdA or FdSc. You will study alongside UK students in the supportive environment of Sussex Downs College. Successful candidates will have the option to apply for a one year top-up honours degree, to gain a BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons). You can study a top-up honours degree in Digital Media Design or Music Production and Creative Recording at Sussex Downs College. Alternatively, you can apply for a relevant top-up honours degree at the University of Brighton or at another British university. We offer a wide range of courses that are relevant to the modern global workplace, giving you comprehensive practical and theoretical training for your chosen career. Many foundation degrees have work placements as part of the course.

Computing (Computer Games Development) (E) UCAS course code G611 Responding to the growth in the computer games industry, this course will give you the theoretical and practical skills to create interactive software that uses 2D and 3D graphical images. You will develop software solutions using an object-orientated approach to design and analysis, as well as studying the computer games industry. Cisco Network Technologies are used on this course.

Contemporary Dance

All Sussex Downs College foundation degrees are validated by the University of Brighton. This means that you will have access to many sources of support and facilities both at the college and university to help you succeed.

(L) UCAS course code W540 This highly practical course will develop your understanding of contemporary dance and covers topics such as choreography, dance teaching and education. Theoretical elements of the course include contextual and historical study which will enable you to develop your critical thinking. Work placement opportunities and links with professional dance artists, choreographers and the industry are important features of the course.

Digital Media Design (E) (L) UCAS course code W212 The foundation degree and BA (Hons) in Digital Media Design covers both the creative and technical aspects of multi-media design. This programme includes interactive design and digital image creation and manipulation, which will develop students’ conceptual, technical, analytical and design skills required by the industry. This programme has led to three D&AD Yellow Pencil Award winners in the last five years.

Music Production and Creative Recording (E) UCAS course code W300 Preparing you for a career in music production, you will study recording and technology, songwriting, composition, performance and music production. You will gain technical and practical experience

in multi-track recording and mastering, sequencing and programming. Sussex Downs College is a nationally-recognised Apple Authorised Training Centre for Education, and Apple Pro training is available to our degree students.

Sport Coaching and Development

(E) UCAS course code CX61 This course is ideal for students looking for a career in sports coaching and development. Course modules include anatomy and physiology, health, lifestyle and fitness, the analysis of sports performance and coaching, nutrition and sports psychology. You will also undertake a work placement as part of this course. Previous placements have included Fulham Football Club and the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
