Progress to A Level 2016/2017 - eastbourne & lewes The Progress to A Level offer is designed to support the progression of students onto an A Level / Level 3 programme. The Progress to A Level offer is aimed at motivated students whose chosen career pathway is tied to the A Level offer. Students will sign up to a programme that will provide them with the qualifications and skills to progress to A Levels at the end of 2016/17. Rather than present these as separate qualifications we want to promote this as a programme of study requiring students to achieve in all the selected elements. On successful completion there will be a progression ceremony where you will be presented with your ‘Progress to A-Level certificate’. The Programme will be made up of GCSE’s selected from the list on the right and compulsory elements. The planned learning hours will also be supplemented by Tutorial/WRL/Self-Study.

All Level 2 students will study English & Maths at GCSE if they have not achieved these at Grade C.

Higher Project Qualiﬁcation – 60/65hrs taught time The Higher Project Qualification allows students to study and complete a research project in an area of interest, this may link to a current or future area of study or interests outside of their curriculum. The Higher Project course develops study skills such as time management, planning, research, gathering resources and evaluating their work. Students will develop an extended piece of work which can take the form of a written report, a work of art, a prototype, design or even a performance or event.

Progression award – 60/65hrs taught time Students will complete a progression award that will enable them to develop the personal study skills required to be successful at A Level. This will include learning how to; locate, retrieve and store information, produce and respond to written materials for a variety of purposes, use IT to organise, edit and compile information and make positive contributions to discussions. Students may also research a career path, develop team working skills, or extend their writing skills further. Achievement of the award is via submission of a portfolio evidence of their personal study skills which can also be presented during A-Level interviews towards the end of the year.

GSCE qualifications

On this course you will study the impact that science and technology has on your everyday life. You will gain an understanding of how science may affect your own and others’ lives. You will develop the skill of deciphering science as it is reported in the media and learn how to present and interpret scientific information yourself. Science (Additional) On this course you will study the science that underpins day-to-day life. The focus will be on scientific explanations and models through which you will gain an insight into how scientists help develop our understanding of ourselves and the world we live in. You will gain skills in scientific data analysis and learn how you can use this information to understand the science and technology that is all around us. The units studied encompass Biology, where you will look at the processes of life, growth and development and the brain and mind. In Chemistry, chemical patterns, chemicals of the natural environment and chemical synthesis will all be covered. Physics looks at explaining motion, electric circuits and radioactive materials. Sociology Sociology is a study of people, their lives and relationships. You will reflect on your own experiences of the world in a variety of social settings. On this course you will study sociological topics such as the mass media, inequality and power. You will develop the ability to evaluate, judge whether it is correct and come to reasoned conclusions. Science (Core)

On this course you will explore many aspects of photography. Emphasis is placed on practical work, the importance of camera skills in both colour, black and white, and traditional black and white processing and printing. The use of digital image processing is also an important element. Alongside practical work, contextual studies are a vital piece of this course, helping you to develop an appreciation of photographic work, both historical and contemporary.

Professional Studies Offer Sport BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate - eastbourne & lewes Entry Requirements: This course is designed for students who achieved four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths. If you have not achieved these, you may take an assessment at interview to ensure your Maths & English skills are at the level to undertake this study programme. Who is it for: A course for those who want to pursue a career in sport coaching, fitness and sport performance. Content: The course is a one year Level 2 course that develops the basic underpinning knowledge of how the body performs when we exercise. At Lewes, there is a level 1 sport course incorporated into the Level 1 Pre-Professional Studies Programme Progression: On completion of the Sport BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate you may be eligible to move up to the Sport BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport or Diploma Sport & Exercise Science if you achieve an overall Merit or Distinction grade. At Lewes, on completion of the Sport BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate you may be eligible to move to the Sport BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 2 A levels) or BTEC Level 3 The Extended Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 3 A levels). Both are two year

courses. For progression to the above courses students need to have achieved a Merit or Distinction from their Level 2 sport qualification and a C in English Language in addition to the standard entry criteria for Level 3 courses.

Public Uniformed Services BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate - eastbourne & lewes Entry Requirements: This course is designed for students who achieved four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths. If you have not achieved these, you may take an assessment at interview to ensure your Maths & English skills are at the level to undertake this study programme. Who is it for: A course for those who want to pursue a career in the Public Uniformed Services. Content: The course is a one academic year, Level 2 course that develops the basic underpinning knowledge of the requirements for entry into uniformed public services. You will study a total of eight units during your time at college and have direct contact with serving members of the armed forces and emergency services. CILEX Level 2 Certificate in Legal Studies - eastbourne Entry Requirements: This course is designed for students who achieved four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths. If you have not achieved these, you may take an assessment at interview to ensure your Maths & English skills are at the level to undertake this study programme. Who is it for: This course is for students that are interested in a career in the legal profession but haven’t yet met the entry requirements for BTEC Applied Law at level 3 (5 GCSEs at grade C or higher including grade C in English Language and Maths). Content: You will study how laws are made, enforced and interpreted. You will sit one multiple choice exam and also submit a range of course work. Progression: Upon successful completion of this course students can progress to BTEC Applied Law at Level 3 (as long as they have achieved grade C or higher in English Language and Maths)

Entry is subject to entry qualifications being obtained and a good reference. An interest in science and an understanding of care skills will be an advantage.

Alternatives: For students who do not have the necessary skill level, there is a Level 1 offer which allows students to explore the care sector whilst accessing English & Maths and any additional support needed. CACHE Level 2 Certificate – Introduction to Children’s Care and Development - eastbourne & lewes Entry Requirements: This course is designed for students who achieved four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths. You will also have an interview to assess your suitability for the course. Entry is subject to entry qualifications being obtained and a good reference. Creative and Digital Studies offer (Eastbourne) We offer fantastic Level 2 programmes in the Creative and Digital sectors, providing opportunities to focus on progression pathways into the thriving creative industries. Each of these courses is designed to enable you to progress to one of our Level 3 Diplomas. These are very practical, more specialist in nature, and very successful in preparing you either for further study of going into work. You normally take Maths, English and ONE from the following:

Art and Design: UAL Level 2 Diploma

This full-time course involves drawing and painting, 3D work, textiles, photography, graphic design, illustration, printmaking, and a diagnostic look at how art and design relates to the world of employment. It is very practical and helps to prepare you for your next steps. Usual progression route: UAL Extended Diploma in Art and Design, where you will become a full-time specialist student before going to university or work.

Creative Media Production: UAL Level 2 Diploma

This full-time course gives you an insight and working knowledge of a number of media pathways including film making, journalism, television and radio broadcasting, design, publishing etc. It is very practical and will involve lots of group productions. Usual progression route: UAL Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (Level 3), in which you will become a full-time student before going to university or work.

Performing Arts: BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate

This course acts as a foundation year to our level 3 courses and is designed to help develop your confidence, communication and performance skills. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to have had any experience in performing, but you do need an interest in theatre and acting in general. The course is designed to be as practical as possible and is delivered through workshops, rehearsal and performance. You will participate in Acting, Movement and Voice workshops and must be willing to attempt all three skills to pass the course. Current units include scripted performances, devising your own work, multimedia production and physical theatre. Usual progression route: BTEC L3 courses in acting, musical theatre, dance and production arts, before entering employment or Higher Education.

Music Production: UAL Level 2 Diploma

This full-time course is designed to prepare you for employment in the music industry, self-employment or further study. You will undertake a wide range of practical project work to establish your interests and strengths, before progressing to either a performance based specialist pathway, or a production (recording, producing, engineering) based one. In the industry you need to be multiskilled and be able to draw upon a wide range of different fields, and so breadth is an important focus. Usual progression route: UAL Extended Diploma Music Production, in which you will become a full-time student before going to university or work.

IT: BTEC Level 2 Diploma

This full-time course is all about being creative through the use of IT and digital tools. You will learn how to make documents that are properly structured, and how to create and launch a web site that you build from the ground up. You will explore the online world and technology systems, and learn to work with software applications like databases, creating computer graphics, creating computer animation and sound. You will also learn the fundamentals of creating and installing a computer network. Usual progression route: BTEC Extended Diploma IT (business), in which you will become a full-time student before going to university or work.

In addition to this there are enrichment activities, trips, the academic tutorial programme and private study requirements.

Creative and Digital Studies offer (lewes) The Creative and Digital L2 programme gives you a chance to focus on progression pathways in this growing sector of the regional, national and international economies. All of these courses are connected, and so you will be part of a larger group of students taking only these options. What will I study? If you are still working towards your Maths and English GCSEs, then you would normally take three out of the five creative pathways below, and so you would opt ‘out’ of two. If you have Maths OR English already, then you can take four (or opt ‘out’ of one). That way, your total programme reaches the 570 guided learning hours (H) required to be a full-time student (if you are 16-18) at the college.

Where next? All of these subjects can be taken to level 3 following successful completion of your L2 programme. If you find that the creative industries are not for you, then the transferrable skills you acquire (discipline, teamwork, problem solving, communication, research, study skills etc.) will lead to successful progression into a number of L3 alternatives.

This course gives you a chance to explore photography and lens based media in depth, both in the darkroom and in a digital environment. You will become proficient in both technical and creative aspects of photography.

vocational Studies Offer - eastbourne Electrical Installation Level 2

Plumbing Level 2

Entry Criteria: This course is for students who have GCSEs mainly at D grades including English Language and Science but with a C in Maths. Students without a C in English Language will be required to study GCSE as part of their study programme.

Entry Criteria: 4 GCSEs at A* to C including maths and English, (Science preferred).

Who is it for?: This is for those who want to pursue a career as an electrician. Content: Course content covers the knowledge and skills required to install electrical equipment in simple systems e.g. houses. Alternatives: There is a one year, Level 1 course for those who do not have the necessary entry criteria, which will prepare learners for the level 2 course. Progression: from level 2 is to the Level 3 course in Electrical Installation which covers the skills required to install equipment in more complex systems e.g. industrial electrical installations. Level 3 is the main entry level for those entering the electrical installation industry.

Engineering Level 2 Entry Criteria: This course is for students who have GCSEs mainly at D grades including English Language and Science but with a C in Maths. Students without a C in English Language will be required to study GCSE as part of their study programme. Who is it for: The course provides a comprehensive and challenging programme of study related to engineering that is particularly suited to post-16 learners who have the relevant interest and aptitude to progress in the sector. Content: This is a general Engineering course which covers many areas within the large umbrella of Engineering. These include electrical, electronic, mechanical and control engineering. Alternatives: To be offered Electrical L1 but you would need at least a D GCSE in both Maths and English. Progression: Apprenticeship workplace or entry onto Engineering L3.

Who is it for: A course for those who want to pursue a career as a plumber. Content: Level 2 Plumbing is the basic entry qualification for entry into the plumbing industry. The course covers the skills and knowledge to install plumbing equipment in straight forward “vented” systems. Equipment includes, pipework (copper and plastic), central heating components (not vented systems and not boilers), bathroom sanitary ware (wash hand basins), kitchen equipment and appliances (washing machines). Alternatives: for students who do not have the necessary entry qualifications, there is a Level 1 Plumbing Course which will prepare students for the level 2 course. Progression: Progression is to Level 3 Plumbing or to a series of short courses that will develop skills in unvented plumbing systems, gas training and the maintenance of gas appliances.

Progression: This course can provide a pathway to Level 3 if you have achieved good grades in the theoretical elements and the practical skills. Alternatively, you may obtain suitable employment in the motor vehicle maintenance and repair industry and continue your studies as an apprentice.

Vehicle Body Repair Level 2 Entry Criteria: For entry to this Level 2 “Fast Track” diploma, students will require C grades in Maths and English and minimum D grades in 2 other GCSEs, preferably Science and/or IT. Who is it for: This course is suitable for anyone who wants to make a serious career in vehicle body repair work. Content: You will combine workshop-based training with the necessary theory needed for modern vehicle body repair. You will gain welding skills including gaining an introduction to MIG brazing and make use of more advanced tools such as a plasma cutter. You will also build your metal finishing skills including single sided repairs.

Vehicle Maintenance (Motor Vehicle) Level 2

Alternatives: For students who do not meet the entry criteria there is a Level 1 course in body repair that will help prepare them for entry into Level 2.

Entry Criteria: For entry to this Level 2 “Fast Track” diploma, students will require C grades in Maths and English GCSEs and C grades in 2 others, preferably Science and/or IT.

Progression: This course can provide a pathway to an apprenticeship or to Level 3 in the following year. You will need to have achieved good grades in theoretical elements and the practical skills.

Who is it for: This course is suitable to anyone who wants to make a serious career in Vehicle Maintenance and repair. Content: You will combine workshop-based training with the necessary technology theory needed for modern vehicle maintenance and repair work. Opportunities to remove, dismantle rebuild and replace many vehicle components. In particular you will build your understanding of more complex operating systems such as charging systems and fuel injections. Alternatives: For students who do not meet the entry criteria there is a Level 1 course in motor vehicle that will help prepare you for entry into L2.

Professional Cookery Level 2

Hairdressing Level 2

Entry Criteria: 4 GCSEs at C or above or Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Professional Cookery.

Entry Criteria: This course is designed for students who achieved four GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths. If you have not achieved these, you may take an assessment at interview to ensure your Maths & English skills are at the level to undertake this study programme.

Who is it for: Those wishing to progress and develop further practical and knowledge skills across all areas of the food service industry. Content: To achieve the full qualification you must complete three mandatory units and 11 optional units, examples of which are effective teamwork, food safety, Health & Safety preparation and the cooking of meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, hot sauces, stocks and soups. In addition you will study NVQ Level 2 in Food & Beverage Service. You will also gain valuable hands-on experience working in our professional kitchens preparing and serving meals in our Restaurant and Bistro, both of which are open to the general public. Alternatives: Professional Cookery L1. Progression: Progression is to NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery or NVQ Level 3 in Patisserie & Confectionery.

Who is it for: Those interested in a career within the Hairdressing industry. You will need to show an excellent record of attendance and commitment from your previous school and a dedication to working in this industry. You will be expected to have a pleasant personality and good personal presentation skills as you will be working with clients. Content: You will have â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hands-onâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; creative lessons in our modern well equipped studios and the opportunity to carry out services on paying clients and develop excellent customer service and practice skills. This experience will develop both confidence and competence in preparation for the workplace or progression to Level 3 Hairdressing. You will learn how to identify flowers and plants, create beautiful handmade tied floral designs, flowers for weddings and other occasions using colour and texture as well as display and promotion design principles related to floristry. Tuition is also given in table design and dressing, learning how to combine colours, mix seasonal flowers and use containers to create the most impact.
