SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE TASTER DAYS The next few years will be an exciting time for you as you begin to unlock your future career and explore all the choices available to you. These Taster Days will help you make an informed decision about your next steps after Year 11. On the day you will have the opportunity to sample real lessons, speak to teachers and students and explore the campus. TASTER SELECTION Please take a look through this programme for our range of tasters and select 5 different taster sessions. You will be allocated 4. SPECIAL CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS We want you to get the best experience possible from your visit to Sussex Downs College so please read the information carefully for the tasters you are interested in and make a note if you need to wear particular clothing on the day. SCHEDULE OF THE DAY Over 600 students from numerous schools will be attending each day. If you are booking through your school you will receive information regarding the date you are to attend and where to register on the day. On arrival to your registration area you will be given your own personal programme for tasters you have selected. There will be staff and students on hand to help you navigate your way around. Please bring a snack and a drink or some money with you for break time.

APPRENTICESHIPS APPRENTICESHIPS

Come along to our Apprenticeship session and meet our Apprenticeship Recruitment Advisor who can talk to you about apprenticeships, what employers are looking for and how to start your career as an Apprentice. Earn a real wage, achieve nationally recognised, industry approved qualifications and gain the employment experience local businesses want. An Apprenticeship is a way for you to earn while you learn in a real job, gaining a real qualification with technical knowledge and practical experience for an immediate job and future career. Apprenticeships are available at Intermediate, Advanced and Higher (degree) level, covering more than 170 industries and 1500 job roles in sectors from Health & Social Care to Motor Vehicle, IT, Accounting and Hospitality. Over 200,000 workplaces in England offer Apprenticeships. 86% of Apprentices progress to new employment after completing their training with 67% staying with the same employer. In fact, a quarter of all former apprentices had received a promotion within 12 months of finishing! Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications. With this in mind there has never been a better time to become an apprentice.

BUSINESS ACCOUNTING & ECONOMICS

We all have to make decisions about what to do with our time, our money and other resources. We need to make the most of what we have to make sure we THRIVE, not just survive! The UK as a country also has important decisions to make; Are we better off in or out of the European Union? How can Economists help to address issues of poverty, obesity and unemployment? This taster will be a demonstration of how the study of economics aims to solve the problem of meeting infinite wants with our scarce resources. Even the best business would fail without sound financial management. So whether you want to be the next Steve Jobs or Alan Sugar or have your own small business, a knowledge of Accounting is vital. This taster will be a demonstration of how the study of Accounting, the “language of business�, will help equip you for a future career in business.


5 BUSINESS BTEC & A LEVEL

Do you have what it takes to start your own business? Do you want to work in Business? This session will offer a taste of the interests, skills and abilities you need to become a successful business person. The following courses are available at SDC Lewes; A level Business Studies, BTEC Business, BTEC Business and Finance and a Level 3 Certificate in Enterprise. Come and find out what each course is about!

ENGLISH & MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

ENGLISH

Know your English! Did you know we offer three different courses in English to appeal to a variety of interests? Come and take part in short activities designed to introduce you to the three exciting courses we offer. When applying to college you can choose between English Literature, English Language or the joint English Language and Literature course. If you really love English, it is possible to study both English Literature and English Language as separate A levels.

FRENCH

Bonjour, bienvenue. Are you interested in learning about the language, culture, history and current affairs of the French speaking world? If so, studying a language at A Level could be for you. In lessons you will be doing a variety of activities like listening to radio and TV broadcasts and video clips, having conversations with a native speaker in small groups, reading magazines and online newspapers, writing articles and practising grammar. If you’ve always wanted to learn to speak French fluently and you are currently doing French GCSE, then come along to a taster session and see what it will be like to study at A Level.

GERMAN

Do you enjoy the challenge of speaking in another language? With German being the most spoken language in Europe and the many successful German companies, German study at advanced level can greatly enhance your future. If you are currently doing your German GCSE, come along and find out what German A level is like. You will have the opportunity of using newly gained language during this taster session.

Do you enjoy the challenge of speaking in another language? Would you like to work abroad, developing your language expertise to help your career prospects? If you are currently doing your Spanish GCSE, come along and find out what the study of Spanish is like beyond GCSE.

HAIRDRESSING & BEAUTY THERAPY BEAUTY THERAPY

Find out about the work of a Beauty Therapist in our introductory session. Come to our professional salons and experience life in the beauty industry. You will have the opportunity to try some of the treatments yourself. Applicants should have an interest in Beauty Therapy as a career.

HAIR & MEDIA MAKE-UP

Our taster session will enable you to experience what happens on a typical day in the training salon. You will have the opportunity to try some of the skills needed to work successfully on the Hair and Media Make-up Course. This is a hand’s on workshop, where you will be able to try your hand at some of the elements of the course.

HAIRDRESSING

Come and find out if a career in Hairdressing is right for you. A hairdresser needs to be skilful and creative with their hands. You will have the opportunity to try some of the skills needed to work in the hairdressing industry.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

Are you interested in a people-orientated career within health care related fields such as social work, teaching, nursing, occupational therapy and many more? Join us for a taster session to find out what we have to offer. Courses available in this sector at our Lewes campus are Health & Social Care and Childcare.


7 HUMANITIES GEOGRAPHY

There has never been a better or more important time to study geography. With growing interest in issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation and globalisation, geography is one of the most relevant courses you could choose to study. Please come along to an informal session to find out more.

HISTORY

Do you think history repeats itself? Do you want to know more about the key events that have shaped the last 150 years of global history? Do you like thinking for yourself and challenging received opinions about the present? Then join us for a lively investigation of the past.

PHILOSOPHY

What are the great ideas which shape attitudes and human thought? Philosophers cover the broad range of ideas concerning knowledge, truth, beauty and the morally good. Join us for a challenge and some intellectual excitement.

SOCIOLOGY

Sociology looks at a wide range of social issues. The course will require you to develop a critical view of the world we live in through questioning, discussion and evaluation. Sociology is about understanding society in all its variety and exploring the complex relationships between us all as human beings. Topics include sexism, racism, crime, religion, education, the family, equality and a whole range of other areas of debate.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INFORMATICS

Informatics is about getting the most out of working with IT: A professional looking web site from documents and data? Making a database app for an iPad? We’ve got all that covered. Come along and learn how to do the things no one ever told you about in IT.


COMPUTER SCIENCE

Are you passionate about technology? Do you want to learn programming skills that are in demand by companies such as Google, Facebook and Twitter? A Level Computing teaches you the fundamental concepts of Computer Science. You will learn how modern processors can perform over a billion calculations per second and the mathematical techniques used to design the next generation of chips. You will also learn the different techniques available to programmers and the fundamental principles of writing code.

The taster session will include a hands-on session learning how to develop a program in Python and is your chance to learn more about this rapidly moving subject.

DIGITAL DESIGN

This is a course for all creative elements of design work with digital platforms. We work with images in industry leading software. We make interactive documents and graphic novels for print, the web and tablets. We produce moving images and special effects in video and help you develop your creative style and identity.

SOFTWARE & GAMES DEVELOPMENT

In Software & Games Development, you make your own interactive web applications. Develop and produce your own games using Unity 3D. Create and manage your own databases and server software. Learn about the bells and whistles of web and games programming.

WEB DESIGN

There is a demand for skilled front end developers who are more than just visually creative designers.Front end developers are able to turn their designs into fully functioning websites using highly developed skills in hand coding of HTML5, CSS3 & jQuery. We give you code and an in-depth understanding of the design process, project planning and the ability to effect design solutions that effectively meet the clients’ needs. You will develop skills in Project Management, Visual Design, Advanced Coding Skills and an ability to make and work with Digital Graphics and Images using advanced Photoshop Techniques including using actions to allow batch processing of whole folders of images for use in Digital Web Galleries.


9 MATHEMATICS MATHEMATICS

This is your first chance to find out what mathematics is like beyond GCSE and discover that it can still be fun! The taster will give you a chance to try a practical activity at a higher level and see how it works. When applying for College there are options to study an A Level in Mathematics with one applied option of Mechanics, Statistics or Decision.

MEDIA & DIGITAL MEDIA FILM STUDIES

For anyone with a serious interest in films and cinema, find out about our approach to films within the AS-Level syllabus. An informal session in which we’ll discuss a range of film extracts and you may discover something new!

FILM & VIDEO PRODUCTION

Interested in Filmmaking? Come and explore our Filmmaking courses, try out some of our equipment and get a feel for our practical creative media courses.

JOURNALISM

In Journalism you will explore the skills of the journalist, research hidden stories, write 'un-put-down-able' copy, pitch ideas, have a day in court, get your head around magazine design, and publish your very own newspaper. Come along to this taster and see how finding your own voice could be the start of an extraordinary career.

MEDIA STUDIES

Discover the approach we take to the media on the Media course. We look at ways of understanding media products and how they influence our society - from Advertising to Zooomr.


PERFORMING ARTS, MUSIC & DANCE

DANCE

Please note: Students must bring tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt for these sessions, not jeans, or they will not be able to participate or observe. Work is done barefoot. Take the chance to explore your movement potential in this practical dance workshop. The class will provide an introduction to dance technique and choreography. This is a physically active class and so it’s not suitable for students who do not wish to participate in practical dance activities.

Then spend some time with us in our purpose built Performing Arts Centre and experience one of our taster workshops. They are fun, physical and practical, and they’ll introduce you to our courses and our approaches to performance and production. If you’re interested in a career in the Performing Arts and Creative Entertainment Industries or want to go on to study either the ideas or practice of performance at drama school or university this is the place for you. Wear clothes that are suitable for you to work practically in.

MUSIC

East Sussex Academy of Music is the music department for students at Sussex Downs College and is based in the performing arts building at the Lewes Campus. Whether you wish to make a career in music by heading off to University or Conservatoire after college, wish to pursue a freelance career or just wish to be in a performing and vibrant setting, - come and find out why ESAM is the best place to study and support your passion. A Level Music – a two year course and is a ‘step up’ from GCSE combining three contents – performance, composition and classical set works. BTEC music - As well as our traditional A Level Music course we also run a very successful Level 3 BTEC Pop Music course which focuses on performing in ensembles and learning about the music industry.


11 MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

Using our MAC computers and the software Logic, Music Technology takes you more behind the scenes of how music tracks are put together. Most work is done using the software to edit, mix and lay down tracks as well as recording instruments. There is not much performance chance but if you are used to working on Garageband and Cubase, then this course will be for you.

SCIENCE BIOLOGY

Explore the subject that unravels the mysteries of life! From the workings of the human body to the complexities of Mother Earth, Biology is all around us, so give it some thought. From eco-systems to the wonders of animals and nature, this taster session lets you view the world around you in a different way.

CHEMISTRY

The science of matter and reactions. Come and experience life in the lab. Bunsen burners, dry ice, explosions and more!

PHYSICS

Experience life as a student of the subject that helps explain how the universe works. You will have the chance to get your hands on some equipment and investigate topics such as magnetism and static electricity. It will make your hair stand on end!

SPORTS

Following the continued high profile of PE & Sport in society, the role of PE & Sport in contributing to a balanced healthy lifestyle has never been so important. Come along to a taster session to find out more about how the body responds to exercise, what coaching skills are important to a coach, how psychology can affect sports performance and much more. You will find out how studying a PE & Sport related course at college will prepare you for a career in the PE, sport and fitness industry, or prepare you for studying a PE or Sport related course at university. Additionally, you will find out about the Sport Academies available at the College which include Men’s and Women’s football, Men’s Rugby and Netball.

TRAVEL & TOURISM TRAVEL & TOURISM

Find out more about the fastest growing people business of the 21st Century! It offers numerous job opportunities in tour companies, travel agencies, call centres, airlines and cruise ships. Come and see our stunning art shows and learn what it takes to make it through the many pathways in an art and design to a future career.

PHOTOGRAMS

An exciting opportunity to try making your own photograms in the darkroom, trying a technique that is 175 years old! You will also get chance to see our famous end-of year photography show and discover more about our courses.

Students will be introduced to working with studio lights, props and portraiture, light painting in the dark! You will also get chance to see our famous end-of year photography show and discover more about our courses.
