year 10 taster days helping you to make choices The next few years will be an exciting time as you begin to unlock your future career and explore all the choices available to you. Our Yr10 Taster Days will help you make an informed decision about your next steps after Yr11. On the day you will have the opportunity to sample real lessons, speak to teachers and students and explore the campus. Taster selection Please take a look through this programme for our range of tasters and select 4 TASTER sessions out of the possible 40, you will be allocated 3. Special clothing requirements We want you to get the best experience possible from your visit to Sussex Downs College so please read the information carefully for the tasters you are interested in and make a note if you need to wear particular clothing on the day. Schedule of the Day – lewes Campus Over 600 students from numerous schools will be attending each day. If you are booking through your school you will receive information regarding the date you are to attend, arrival times and where to register on the day. On arrival to your registration area you will be given your own personal programme for tasters you have selected. There will be staff and students on hand to help you navigate your way around. Please bring a snack and a drink or some money with you for break time.

3 Key to Qualifications Within each subject taster there could be many different types of qualifications on offer. We have over 400 different qualifications ranging from Entry Level though to A Level across the whole of Sussex Downs College. Please view the symbols next to each taster session as it will indicate the different types of qualifications offered. A Levels - with over 40 A Levels to choose from we can provide the right programme for you. A Levels are primarily exam based. Vocational Courses - We have a whole range of vocational areas offering BTEC’s, NVQ’s and City and Guilds courses covering levels 1, 2 and 3.Vocational qualifications are mainly coursework based. On certain vocational courses there is the opportunity for a work placement. Apprenticeships - There has never been a better time to become an apprentice. TASTER: BUSINESS
Do you have what it takes to start your own business? Do you want to work in Business? This session will offer a taste of the interests, skills and abilities you need to become a successful business person. The following courses are available at SDC Lewes; A level Business Studies, Btec Business, Btec Business and Finance and a Level 3 Certificate in Enterprise. Come and find out what each course is about!
TASTER: ECONOMICS
We all have to make decisions about what to do with our time, our money and other resources. We need to make the most of what we have to make sure we THRIVE, not just survive! This taster will be a demonstration of how the study of economics aims to solve the problem of meeting infinite wants with our scarce resources.
TASTER: PRE-PROFESSIONAL LAW
Are you interested in finding out more about the law? Then, take part in an interactive session during which you will consider the following topics: How much of an impact the law has on every day life and at what age you are legally permitted to do certain things. Judges are frequently asked to balance conflicting interests, particularly in the Supreme Court which is the highest court in England & Wales. You will take part in a group Nuclear Bunker Activity - who will you save and who will you allow to perish? We will also look at a legal principle called ‘joint venture’ based on a real case called R v Gnango, which went to the Supreme Court. Gnango and another youth, ‘Bandana Man’ (who was not caught by the police) were involved in a shootout in a car-park and an an innocent passerby was shot by a bullet from Bandana Man’ gun. Is Gnango guilty of murder? What do you think?

When applying to college you can choose between English Literature, English Language or the joint English Language and Literature course. If you really love English, it is possible to study both English Literature and English Language as separate AS levels.

TASTER: AS FRENCH
Bonjour, bienvenue. Are you interested in learning about the language, culture, history and current affairs of the French speaking world? If so, studying a language at A Level could be for you. In lessons you will be doing a variety of activities like listening to radio and TV broadcasts and video clips, having conversations with a native speaker in small groups, reading magazine and online newspapers, writing articles and practising grammar. If you’ve always wanted to learn to speak French fluently and are currently doing GCSE French or have already obtained your GCSE French, then come along to a taster session and see what it will be like to study at A Level.
TASTER: AS GERMAN
Do you enjoy the challenge of speaking in another language? With German being the most spoken language in Europe and the many successful German companies, German study at advanced level can greatly enhance your future. If you are currently doing your GCSE German or have already completed the course, come along and find out what German A level is like.You will have the opportunity of using newly gained language during this taster session.

Do you enjoy the challenge of speaking in another language? Would you like to work abroad, developing your language expertise to help your career prospects? If you are currently doing your GCSE Spanish or have already completed the course, come along and find out what the study of Spanish is like beyond GCSE.
TASTER: IGCSE SPANISH
iGCSE Spanish (for beginners) Deciding to learn Spanish is one of the best decisions you can make if you want to travel and see the world and improve your employability prospects. It really is a no-brainer: More than 400 million people around the world speak Spanish. Not only that, but learning a language is a fun experience that will make you feel good about yourself when interacting with the natives! The GCSE Spanish course teaches you all the basics you need, such as booking hotels, eating out and making friends. It also covers reading, writing, speaking and listening so you can be sure you can gain a good foundation in this useful language. If you haven’t had a chance to learn Spanish yet, please come along!

TASTER: BEAUTY THERAPY
Find out about the work of a Beauty Therapist in our introductory session. Come to our professional salons and experience life in the beauty industry.You will have the opportunity to try some of the treatments yourself. Applicants should have a firm interest in Beauty Therapy as a career. We offer qualifications from the government approved awarding body of VTCT. Year 1:VRQ level 2 in Beauty Therapy; upon successful completion you will have the option to complete a Level 3 VRQ in Beauty Therapy treatments.
TASTER: HAIR & BEAUTY
Our introductory session will enable you to experience what happens on a typical day in the salon.You will have the opportunity to try some of the skills needed to work successfully in Hair and Beauty. Come and find out if a career in Hair and Beauty is right for you. This is a hand’s on workshop, where you will be able to try your hand at some of the elements of Hair and Beauty, including the opportunity to try out skills in Media make-up. We offer: A combined Level 2 Hairdressing and Beauty course, with Media makeup Level 3. Hairdressing Level 2 and Level 3 combined.

TASTER: HISTORY (MODERN)
Do you think history repeats itself? Do you want to know more about the key events that have shaped the last 150 years of global history? Do you like thinking for yourself and challenging received opinions about the present? Then join us for a lively investigation of the past Offered at both AS & A2. A minimum of a C in GCSE is required. If GCSE History has been taken then a minimum of a C grade is required.
TASTER: PHILOSOPHY
What are the great ideas which shape attitudes and human thought? Philosophers cover the broad range of ideas concerning knowledge, truth, beauty and the morally good. Join us for a challenge and some intellectual excitement. Offered at both AS & A2.You will need to have achieved high grades at GCSE, predominant As and Bs.
TASTER: SOCIOLOGY
Sociology looks at a wide range of social issues. The course will require you to develop a critical view of the world we live in through questioning, discussion and evaluation. Sociology is about understanding society in all its variety and exploring the complex relationships between us all as human beings. Topics include sexism, racism, crime, religion, education, the family, equality and a whole range of other areas of debate. Offered at AS and A2. Also offered as a one year fast track for students with exceptional GCSE scores. Minimum of C grade at GCSE in English is required, although as the course demands significant amounts of essay style assessment a B grade is preferred.

TASTER: INFORMATICS
Informatics is about getting the most out of working with IT: A professional looking web site from documents and data? Making a database app for an iPad? We’ve got all that covered. Come along and learn how to do the things no one ever told you about in IT.
TASTER: COMPUTING
Are you passionate about technology? Do you want to learn programming skills that are in demand by companies such as Google, Facebook and Twitter? A Level Computing teaches you the fundamentals concepts of Computer Science. You will learn how modern processors can perform over a billion calculations per second and the mathematical techniques used to design the next generation of chips. You will also learn the different techniques available to programmers and the fundamental principles of writing code. The taster session will include a hands-on session learning how to develop a program in Python and is your chance to learn more about this rapidly moving subject.
TASTER: SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
In Software Development, you make your own interactive web applications. Develop and produce your own games using Unity 3D. Create and manage your own databases and server software. Learn about the bells and whistles of web and games programming. We will cover html, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL and mobile web apps.

This is your first chance to find out what mathematics can be like beyond GCSE and discover that it can still be fun! The taster will give you a chance to try a practical activity at a higher level and see how it works. dept: Media and Digital Media TASTER: COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE
One of the aspects of the course involves looking at codes. Codes are made up of the different elements we use to communicate with others. For example, we have dress codes, linguistic codes, codes of conduct and so on. Come and explore some of the meanings and practices of everyday life through examining cultural codes.
TASTER: FILM STUDIES
For anyone with a serious interest in films and cinema, find out about our approach to films within the AS-Level syllabus. An informal session in which we’ll discuss a range of film extracts and you may discover something new!
TASTER: FILM AND VIDEO PRODUCTION
Come and explore our TV and Video facilities, getting a chance to experience the behind-the-scenes work in a TV studio, trying out some of our equipment and getting a feel for our practical media courses.
TASTER: INTERACTIVE MEDIA
iMedia offers you the chance to explore the creative side of computing, like manipulating images, building web sites, creating animations and editing videos. For a taste of what this course has to offer, come and use our Apple Mac suite and learn some nifty tips and tricks in Photoshop.
TASTER: MEDIA STUDIES
Discover the approach we take to the media on the AS Media course. We look at ways of understanding media products and how they influence our society.

dept: Performing Arts, Music and Dance
TASTER: DANCE
Please note: Students must bring tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt for these sessions, not jeans, or they will not be able to participate or observe. Work is done barefoot. Take the chance to explore your movement potential in this practical dance workshop. The class will provide an introduction to dance technique and choreography. This is a physically active class and so it is not suitable for students who do not wish to participate in practical dance activities.

TASTER: CHEMISTRY
The science of matter and reactions. Come and experience life in the lab. Bunsen burners, dry ice, explosions and more! When applying for College there are options to study an A Level in Chemistry.
TASTER: PHYSICS
Experience life as a student of the subject that helps explain how the universe works. You will have the chance to get your hands on some equipment and investigate such topics as magnetism and static electricity. It will make your hair stand on end! When applying for College there are options to study an A Level in Physics.
TASTER: PSYCHOLOGY
This subject develops an understanding of the methods used by psychologists and explores the five main psychological approaches.You need to have good thinking and analytical skills. An interest in science is important. It is essential to be well organised for success in the practical work.You need to be willing to develop your communication skills.You should take this course if you are interested in studying human behaviour or if you are interested in progressing to further study and/or a career in Psychology, Law, Teaching, Advertising or Health Services. This subject blends well with subjects such as Sociology, Science subjects and Health & Social Care.You do have to have an interest in science and maths as both skills are needed in Psychology.

Following the continued high profile of PE & Sport in society, the role of PE & Sport in contributing to a balanced healthy lifestyle has never been so important. Come along to a taster session to find out more about how the body responds to exercise, what coaching skills are important to a coach, how psychology can affect sports performance and much more information.You will find out how studying a PE & Sport related course at college will prepare you for a career in the PE, sport and fitness industry, or prepare you for studying a PE or Sport related course at university. Additionally, you will find out about the Sport Academies available at the College which include Men’s and Women’s football, Men’s Rugby and Netball.

Visual Arts includes a wide variety of creative work. In these sessions we will explore some of the aspects of art and design. When applying to the College there are a choice of award winning courses in Visual Arts: A Levels in Fine Art, Graphics, Photography, Textiles and Applied Art & Design, and at Level 2 there is GCSE Photography and BTEC Art & Design. Students can mix and match these courses with other subjects to create their own academic pathway. Some practical work in the darkroom to gain an understanding of the fundamental principle of chemical black and white photography.

Come along to our Apprenticeship information session to meet with our Recruitment Advisors who can talk to you about apprenticeships, what employers are looking for and how to start your career as an Apprentice. There has never been a better time to become an apprentice. Earn a real wage, achieve nationally recognised – industry approved qualifications and gain the employment experience local business want. An Apprenticeship is a way for young people and adult learners to earn while they learn in a real job, gaining a real qualification and a real future gaining technical knowledge and practical experience for their immediate job and future career and recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are available at Intermediate, Advanced and Higher (degree) level, covering more than 170 industries and 1500 job roles in sectors from Nursing to Graphic Design, Horticulture to Electric Vehicle Engineering. Over 200,000 workplaces in England offer Apprenticeships. 86% of Apprentices progress to new employment after completing their training with 67% staying with the same employer. In fact, a quarter of all former apprentices had received a promotion within 12 months of finishing!
