Use this guide to see what’s on offer here at the College and get a glimpse of life after Year 11. Sussex Downs is a large College, with campuses in Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven, so there is lots to see and do! When you become a student here, your studies are focused on one campus, meaning we get to know you really well, and vice versa. Sussex Downs College is big enough to deliver your course requirements and small enough to care for you as a person. Our staff are professionally qualified, often with substantial experience in the industry area in which they teach, and are personally committed to your future. We offer a range of traditional Sixth Form subjects alongside Professional & Technical courses. Our adult provision includes Higher Education, Adult Leisure and Community Engagement programmes. Use your time with us to explore the options available, and speak to staff and advisors who can help you to plan your next steps. GENERAL INFORMATION STANDS
LEARNER SUPPORT: Help when you need it Providing our students with the support they need to succeed, grow, gain their independence and progress onto further study and employment is one of our top priorities at Sussex Downs College. We have specialist Additional Learning Support Teams, Study Programme Tutors and Wellbeing Advisors, who work closely with learners throughout their programmes to provide individual support and help where needed. Please visit the following support stands during Open Events to find out more information:
Admissions, General Advice and Financial Support Come along and find out about the application process, interviews and auditions and about financial help that you may be able to apply for.
Additional Learning Support (ALS) Learning Support is provided for students who have learning difficulties or disabilities. Every year many of our students need additional help with skills such as literacy, numeracy or indeed day to day learning activities. Support can be provided through a variety of methods which is agreed between the student, ALS tutor and the Learning Support Team, thereby getting the best support package for you.
Wellbeing and Safeguarding Team Wellbeing Advisers provide help and guidance to students who are in need, this can be because of mental health issues, relationship difficulties, homelessness etc. We also provide support for new students who find starting at college particularly difficult, e.g. because of high levels of anxiety. Wellbeing Advisers can signpost or refer students to other organisations. e.g. transgender support groups, Under 19’s Substance Misuse Service, YMCA Housing.
The Hub: Careers and Employability service It’s your future! We have your future in mind, whether you plan to go straight into employment, an apprenticeship or onto university. Our dedicated Careers and Employability teams at Lewes and Eastbourne will work with you to prepare for your future, including: • UCAS application support • Impartial Careers Advice and Guidance, from professionally qualified staff • Support to improve your CV, interview and presentation skills • Workshops to help you to gain paid and voluntary work experience • Help to find apprenticeship opportunities • Careers fairs and recruitment events for you to attend
Apprenticeships: A supportive step into employment An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying assessment and skills development programme. It is a way for individuals to earn while they learn, gaining valuable skills and knowledge in a specific job role. The apprentice gains this through a wide mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-thejob training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment. Sussex Downs College offers Apprenticeships in over 40 areas with many being delivered in full in the workplace. Others will require attendance at college for one day a week. All apprenticeships require you to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job role and we are here to guide you through the process of finding an employer and applying for that Apprenticeship Vacancy. Clock Tower Nursery Our onsite nursery provides high standard childcare for staff and students of the College and families in the community. We are registered with Ofsted and take up to 20 children per session from the age of 1 years up to 5 years old. Higher Education (University equivalent courses) Studying a university level course at Sussex Downs College gives you access not only to high quality teaching but small group sizes, personalised support, lower fees than many universities and tailored training for your next career step - all closer than you think. Foundation Degrees and Higher Nationals are vocational university-level courses, preparing you for employment and further study. By choosing this route at Sussex Downs College you will benefit from studying in the supportive environment of a leading UK College, as well as your award being validated by the University of Brighton or by Pearson Education. Sussex Downs College is a proud holder of a Silver award from the Teaching Excellence Framework for higher education.
Access to Higher Education Access to HE courses are designed to help adult learners who wish to progress on to degree courses at university. The courses run for one year and you will either study three days a week or two evenings and five saturdays. We offer a wide range of pathways leading to different degree courses including Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Biology, Pharmacy, Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, Law, Teaching, Medicine, Business and many more. Most students will need GCSE Maths and English at a C/4 grade in order to take an Access Course. Find out more by visiting our stand this evening or visit the College website.
