As you explore the campus, you will find a range of spaces where you can study, eat, drink and catch up with friends. Sussex Downs is a large College, with campuses in Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven, so there is lots to see and do! When you become a student here, we ensure your studies are focused on one campus, meaning we get to know you really well, and vice versa. We also have a comprehensive tutorial system to support you every step of the way. In short, we are big enough to deliver your course requirements and small enough to care for you as a person. There are many routes to different qualifications, from traditional Sixth Form subjects including English, Humanities and Science A Levels, to technical courses including Brickwork, Beauty Therapy and Theatre Studies. Our adult provision includes Higher Education, Adult Leisure and Community Engagement. Use your time with us to explore all the different options available to you, and speak to staff and advisors who can help you to plan your next steps. Our staff are professionally qualified, often with substantial experience in the industry area in which they teach, and are personally committed to your future. We are extremely proud of our students – and of their many and varied achievements; you will notice this as you look at student work and talk to teachers, tutors and support staff.

SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE OUR STUDENTS ACHIEVE... In 2016 we achieved a 98.3% A Level pass rate, the College’s best performance in five years and above the national average. The number of students receiving grades A* and A was also up 10% from 2015.
OUR STUDENTS WIN AWARDS... Last month Sussex Downs College alumna and Beauty Therapist Kaiya Swain won the only Gold medal for Team UK at the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi. Kaiya’s success follows three years of intensive training at College, which saw her advance through regional and national heats (see more on page 9). Vocational students at College win medals in competitions including SkillBuild, WorldSkills, the Guild of Bricklayers and Young Chef of the Year. Students on academic courses, including Law and Media, are also among our recent award winners.
OUR STUDENTS EXCEL... Academic and vocational students achieve above and beyond what is expected of them, as highlighted in the ALPS report in 2016. Our A Level students ranked in the top 25% in the UK for achieving above their expected grades.

SIXTH FORM
STUDY PROGRAMMES
Our sixth form study programmes are usually regarded as a ‘traditional’ academic route for learners after Year 11. They include qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and Diplomas and are based at our Eastbourne and Lewes campuses. Some of the differences between the courses are detailed below, speak to our staff today for more information about specific subject areas:
A LEVELS: • Two year course • Academic approach to learning • Ideal for students wanting to learn a variety of subject areas • Assessed by final exam, at the end of the two-year programme • Three A Levels make up a full-time study programme • A Level students typically progress to university, others go on to higher apprenticeships and employment • To study three A Levels you must achieve at least five GCSEs grade A*/9 – C/4 in five different subjects, including English Language. Maths GCSE grade C/4 or above is preferred. Please note, individual subject specific entry criteria may apply.
BTECS AND DIPLOMAS: • Two to three year course, depending on entry level • Mixed approach to learning between academic and hands-on • Ideal for students wanting to learn about one subject area in depth • Varied assessments, including coursework and exams throughout your course • BTEC and Diploma students progress to university, higher apprenticeships and employment Explore the campus and visit our sixth form programmes. TRIPLE SCOOP OF A GRADES University is on the cards for the vast amount of learners leaving SDC and the fantastic results achieved in 2017 enables them to do just that. Twentyone SDC learners are celebrating outstanding results, having achieved A/A* grades in all three of their A Level subjects. These include Eastbourne learner Nele Gewert (pictured), who achieved an A* in English Literature and A grades in Psychology and English Language. Daniel Hagan achieved an A* in Mathematics and A grades in Physics and Further Mathematics. In Lewes, Jessica Green achieved three A grades in Philosophy, English Literature and Business. Roisin Fairbairn was awarded A* grades in Sociology and Communication & Culture, and an A in Psychology.

BTEC SUCCESS Grace Rolls-King received a Triple Distinction* in BTEC Health & Social Care Extended Diploma. She is now embarking on a mentor role before attending Roehampton University in 2018. She says: “The College helped me get a mentor role with Willingdon School, where I will be working with learners, helping with their learning or any needs that they may have. I’m really excited about that. Then I’m going to study Primary Education at Roehampton University. The College prepared me for my next step by arranging UCAS drop-ins where they could check over personal statements and things like that. That was really helpful to make sure they were as good as we could get them and give us the best chance of progressing. I’m really happy and really excited for the future! Going to University is something I’ve always wanted to do.”
AMANJOT HEER A Level learner Amanjot Heer has progressed to Durham to study Accounting and Finance after achieving A grades in Business and Accounting and a B in Maths.

STUDY PROGRAMMES
Our Professional and Technical study programmes are ideal for students who want a more hands-on approach to learning. They include Diplomas, BTECs and Certificates, and are based at our Eastbourne and Lewes campuses. • Students achieve a Level 3 qualification over 2-3 years, depending on entry level • Ideal for students wanting to learn about one subject area in depth • Hands-on approach to learning, with assessments based on practical work and coursework submitted throughout your course (exams may be required for some courses). • Professional & Technical learners typically progress onto apprenticeships and employment, with some students continuing to higher education • Vocational subjects remain a popular choice in various fields, including Hair & Beauty, Catering & Hospitality, Construction, Sport, Art & Design and Performing Arts • It is likely you may enter vocational programmes at Level 2, to gain the experience and knowledge to continue onto Level 3 Explore the campus and visit our professional and technical areas. KAIYA SWAIN The most headline dominated College story of recent times is that of 22-year-old Kaiya Swain, who took home the Gold medal in the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi (October 2017). Kaiya’s success follows three years of intensive training with the College, which saw her advance through regional heats and a national final, before selected for Team UK. Kaiya flew to Abu Dhabi to represent the UK in Beauty Therapy, competing against 27 Beauty Therapists from around the globe. Kaiya won the only Gold medal for Team UK in the competition, firmly putting herself, the beauty industry, and the training provided by SDC, in the limelight. Kaiya says: “It was an absolute honour to represent my country. This is a dream come true, I never expected to come out on top”.
STEVEN TATE Steven Tate won gold in the SkillBuild Brickwork regional heat, which took place at East Kent College, Folkestone, in Spring 2017. An Apprenticeship is a real job with training so you can earn while you learn, and pick up some nationally recognised qualifications as you go. There are two types of Apprenticeships we deliver: • Day release - involves attendance at College for one day a week and on average four days in the workplace • Work-based - means your apprenticeship will be entirely delivered in the workplace, with no College attendance Sussex Downs College offers a broad range of Apprenticeships in a variety of subjects and levels, starting from Level 2 all the way up to Level 5 (equivalent to a Foundation Degree). Areas include beauty therapy and hairdressing, customer service, catering and hospitality, adult and early years care, science technicians, management and leadership, business administration, construction, motor vehicle, digital and IT, accounting and legal services. Apprenticeships can also be studied after completing a sixth form or professional and technical programme at College. Billy Cleaver, 18 (pictured left), started his apprenticeship with Chandlers BMW & Mini, Hailsham in August 2016. He said: “Alongside my apprenticeship I have been training as a Product Genius at the Mini Academy. There are brilliant training programmes inside the business including an introduction to sales training. That’s where I am right now; I’m finishing off my apprenticeship, continuing my Product Genius training, and then taking the first steps into sales. I’ve changed so much since starting the apprenticeship. It builds you and you gain confidence.” Apprenticeships with Sussex Downs College are fulfilled by Sussex Skills Solutions.

We have links with around 1,000 employers who tell us they value skills and experience as well as qualifications. STANDS SUPPORT IN CLIFFE LOCATED MALL BUILDING
WELLBEING AND SAFEGUARDING TEAM Our Wellbeing and Safeguarding Advisors provide one to one support for students who need additional support to succeed at College. This could be because of low level mental health needs, caring responsibilities or other welfare concerns. As well as providing one to one support the team can refer learners to other local organisations for help and advice.
CLOCKTOWER NURSERY Our onsite nursery provides high standard childcare for staff and students of the College and families in the community. We are registered with Ofsted and take up to 20 children per session from the age of 1 years up to 5 years old. FOUNDATION LEARNING PROGRAMMES Southover 84 Information stand in Cliffe Building Common Room Foundation learning offers courses for students who need more individual support to achieve an Entry and Foundation Level qualification. The courses allow students to build on essential skills and general education and get experience in vocational areas. Our programmes include access to tasters in art, business administration, carpentry, childcare, construction, floristry, health & social care, horticulture, hospitality, music, motor vehicle, painting & decorating, public & uniformed services, retail, sport and travel & tourism. All students also study English and Maths at a level to suit them. Students will receive support in developing their personal and social skills to ensure they are ready for their next steps in education, training, employment and/or independent living. Whilst Sussex Downs College is proud of its commitment to full-time 16-19 students, it is more than an FE College for school leavers. We offer learning opportunities to adults of all ages, whether you’d like to update and develop a skill, change a career path, improve your job prospects or simply pursue a new hobby and meet new people. Our adult courses have enrolment dates throughout the year, meaning you can start your ideal course as early or as late as you would like. HIGHER EDUCATION
(University equivalent courses) Information stand in Cliffe Building Mall Studying a university level course at Sussex Downs College gives you access not only to high quality teaching but small group sizes, personalised support, lower fees than many universities and tailored training for your next career step. Foundation degrees and Higher Nationals are vocational university-level courses, preparing you for employment and further study. By choosing this route at Sussex Downs College you will benefit from studying in the supportive environment of a leading UK College, as well as your degree being validated by the University of Brighton. NB: BTEC Higher National Certificates and Diplomas are awarded by Pearson Education.
ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Access to HE courses are designed to help adult learners who wish to progress on to degree courses at university. The courses run for one year and you will either study three days a week or two evenings and five saturdays. We offer a wide range of pathways leading to different degree courses including Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Biology, Pharmacy, Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, Law, Teaching, Medicine and Business and many more. Most students will need GCSE Maths and English at a C grade in order to take an Access Course. INDEPENDENT LEARNING FOR ADULTS

Sussex Downs College is able to provide free distance learning to anyone over 19 years who has lived in the EU for over 3 years. Once enrolled we send you a course pack and workbook to send back to us, or you can simply use our website to submit your answers. Courses are Level 2 Certificate Qualification accredited by NCFE and there are four subjects to choose from: Counselling Skills, Awareness of Mental Health Problems, Equality & Diversity and Understanding Health & Nutrition. Expert Assessors will provide feedback and support over the 8 – 10 week programme and there is no charge - all you need to provide is brainpower and 2/3 hours a week.
Engagement programmes will give you the opportunity to meet new people, increase your confidence and develop your independence skills with the support you need to successfully progress onto a full-time College course, into training or employment.
