Apprenticeships Apprenticeships combine paid work with theoretical learning They allow you to develop and apply the skills, knowledge and understanding required by employers in particular jobs. All apprenticeships include a number of qualifications including a competence based Certificate or Diploma, Functional Skills in English and maths and, sometimes, information technology. In some apprenticeships, job specific knowledge and skills are taught as a separate qualification. Apprenticeships also include awareness of employment rights and responsibilities as well as personal learning and thinking skills.
There are no specific entry requirements to become an apprentice; however an employer may specify entry requirements for a particular job role, which may include English and maths. Apprenticeships are available at three levels: An Intermediate Apprenticeship is ideal if you are in a first job or have changed jobs and need to learn new skills. You’ll work towards Level 2 qualifications (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C) and Level 1 Functional Skills. An Advanced Apprenticeship builds on the skills and knowledge achieved through experience or an Intermediate Apprenticeship. You’ll work towards Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels) and Level 2 Functional Skills. A Higher Apprenticeship is equivalent to a foundation degree and you will need to have relevant employment experience in order to begin one. The College can offer you support to find an apprenticeship through our Job Shop: www.jobshopsussex.blogspot.co.uk or you can use the apprenticeship vacancy system at www.apprenticeships.org.uk.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES The College offers a wide range of Adult languages, and we hope you may find something of interest. Our programme has been designed for students who wish to study languages without the need for formal assessment. If you have any queries about what level you are at, please contact us for advice and guidance. Guide to Language Levels Get By
Post Intermediate
For the complete beginner who is perhaps holidaying in the country and wants to learn basic phrases that will enable them to get by in everyday situations. We will aim to cover a variety of practical topics such as ordering drink and food, finding your way around the town and interact with the locals using basic language. This is a fun course with the emphasis on speaking activities so that by the end of the course you will be able to use a range of key phrases with confidence.
You will expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary by introducing and practicing more complex structures. You will also have the opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills as well as increasing your reading and writing ability. You should have already completed the intermediate course or have equivalent knowledge of studying the language for at least 3 years.
Beginners For complete beginners, learn the basics of the language and gain confidence to speak in everyday situations. We will aim to cover basic topics such as shopping, directions, ordering a meal, booking a room etc. By the end of the course you will be able to speak and understand basic language and grammar. Beginners Continued Aimed at students who have completed the first 10 week course, it builds on the basic knowledge acquired previously, by improving your understanding in a variety of practical situations. Improvers You will have the opportunity to revise and consolidate your existing skills and competence. It is for students who have completed a beginner course or who have studied the language for approximately 1 year. We will aim to build and extend on the basic skills acquired previously. By the end of the course you will be able to communicate more confidently on a wider range of topics. Intermediate You will have the opportunity to revise and consolidate your existing skills and competence. You should have already completed the improver course or have the equivalent knowledge of studying the language for at least 2 years. We will aim to build on current skills, broaden your vocabulary and increase your confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. By the end of the course you will be more confident in speaking and understanding the language.
Lower Advanced You will continue to expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary by introducing and practicing more complex structures. You will also have the opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills as well as expanding reading and writing skills. You should already have completed the Intermediate, Post Intermediate course or have equivalent knowledge of studying the language for at least 3 – 4 years. Advanced You will cover more complex and specialised language to deal with unpredicted situations. By the end of the course you will be able to communicate with greater accuracy, knowledge and fluency on a wider range of topics. You should have studied the language for at least 4 years or have equivalent experience such as AS level grade B or above. Advanced Conversation You will widen your knowledge of the culture, literature, music and visual arts as well as current affairs. We will watch and discuss the news or work on snippets of films, shows and documentaries. Students are encouraged to bring items of news they would like to discuss with their peers. There will be some grammar to help you consolidate your spoken and written command of the language. This course is for nearly fluent speakers of the language who have lived in the country where the language is spoken or studied to the A level.

In 2011 the Government announced the introduction of loans to pay for education for those aged 24 and over. This means that Learners in FE and training will be able to access finance on the same basis as in higher education ‘In further education , individuals aged 24 years and above wishing to gain a level 3 qualification will be supported by the offer of a Government backed student loan to meet tuition costs. Loans will be made available to learners on an income contingent basis.’ 2012 is the last opportunity for adult learners to access government funding in order to subsidise the cost of learning. Sussex Downs is expecting that Loans will apply to all provision at level 3/4 for those aged 24 and over, including Access to HE courses as well as Advanced and Higher Level Apprenticeships Eligibility for these loans will be based on residency and the type of course being undertaken – not the financial position of the learner, their credit history or ability to repay. The loans will only be repaid once the learner has left the course and is earning more than £21,000 a year.
