Overview
Welcome! I am delighted that you are thinking about joining us at Sussex Downs College. We open our doors to adult learners of all ages and from a range of backgrounds and starting points. This, we feel, makes for a rich and exciting learning environment. Adults come to college for many reasons; to update and develop expertise, to learn new skills, to change career direction, to get a job, or simply to have fun and meet new people. Whatever your reasons for learning, I hope you will find this Part-Time Guide helpful. We explain not only the wide range of courses and qualifications on offer, but also outline our support services, the facilities available and course fees, which we know are an important consideration for everyone. Finance needn’t be a barrier to gaining new skills and for some students, these fees can be reduced. But the Government rules can be complicated, so to answer any questions you may have, we have friendly advisers in our Student Services Team who can explain more. The College has an extensive range of adult leisure and professional courses on offer with enrolment dates throughout the year. Our academic courses prepare individuals for the best universities, while our vocational courses have an enviable record of helping people to find good jobs and continue their studies at higher levels. And have you thought about studying with the College at degree level? With Sussex Downs you can take a top-rate course on your doorstep, negating the need to travel further afield for Higher Education. If you want to change your career or job, Sussex Downs College has a close relationship with local employers and can keep you informed of vacancies. You can also receive support to refresh your job searching skills and interview techniques, as well as industry-specific training to help you re-enter the job market. Our former students keep in touch with us and tell us about their career pathways and life experiences - some of their stories are brilliant! Learn with us at Sussex Downs College and start creating your own success story now!

www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans
FAST FACTS How much money can I apply for? It depends on the type of course you take and the cost of the course. The minimum loan amount is £300.
www.sussexdowns.ac.uk No matter what stage of life you’re at, the opportunity to study has never been more within your reach - thanks to new funding available for courses at Sussex Downs College. The Government’s new, non meanstested 24+ Advanced Learning Loan means anybody over the age of 24 can improve their qualifications on a ‘buy now, pay later’ basis. The College is offering support in applying for the loan to help pay towards the costs of a range of its advanced courses at Level 3 or 4 - which include A Levels, Access to Higher Education, Diplomas, Certificates and Apprenticeships. Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history and repayments won’t start until 2016 – and only then if your earnings are above £21,000 per year. If you’re interested in finding out more about Advanced Learning Loans, our fast facts will tell you all you need to know.
8
How is the loan paid? The loan will be paid directly to the College once you have attended your course for two weeks or more. How many loans can I apply for? You can apply for up to four loans, but you can only take out one loan at a time. You can’t get a loan to do another similar level course, for instance, two at Level 3. How do I know if I am eligible? 1. You must be over 24 years old on the day you start the course and the course must commence on or after 1 August 2013. The loan cannot be used for courses commencing before this date. 2. You must be living in the UK on the day the course starts and have been a UK resident for three years prior to starting the course. 3. The course must be an approved Level 3 or 4 course. 4. The course must be delivered by an eligible provider such as Sussex Downs College. How do I apply? 1. You can apply either online at www.gov.uk/ advanced-learning-loans or by post now, for courses starting on or after 1 August 2013. You can apply for a course that has already started after that date but not after a course has finished. 2. Applications can take up to five weeks to process but you can track your application. 3. You will need to know your National Insurance Number as no monies can be paid without this. 4. Y ou will also need another source of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate.
For further information, contact Student Services on 08452 601 608 or go to www.sussexdowns.ac.uk
What about repaying the loan? 1. You will not begin loan repayments until April 2016 - even if your course finishes before then. 2. Repayments of the loan, plus interest, will start once you reach the income threshold of £21,000. If your income should drop below this, repayments will be halted until the £21,000 threshold is reached again. 3. If you are self-employed, you will make repayments as part of your self-assessment in your tax return. What if I change my mind about studying once I have taken out the loan? If you leave or change your course after the initial two weeks you may be liable to pay the full amount of the course fees for the year. What about if I want to progress to Higher Education eventually? If you apply for a loan to cover your Access to Higher Education course and then successfully complete a degree, you will not have to pay back your Advanced Learning Loan – it will be written off. To find out more about 24+ Advanced Learning Loans and which courses at Sussex Downs College are eligible for support, contact Student Services on 08452 601 608.
Overview
understanding levels Sussex Downs College offers a wide variety of programmes. Some lead to nationally recognised qualifications at different levels, the details of which can be difficult to get to grips with. Our friendly staff in Student Services are always available to give advice and guidance, but for a brief overview of how qualifications compare, take a look at the table, showing the different levels and what they can lead to. In some cases you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to ensure you gain the background knowledge and skills you need. In others, as long as you have achieved a certain level of qualification, e.g GCSE at grade C , you can go on to higher study. If you are employed in a role that requires higher level skills and competence, you may be able to ‘jump’ a level.

Overview
APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships combine paid work with theoretical learning. They allow you to develop and apply the skills, knowledge and understanding required by employers in particular jobs.
Apprenticeships are available at three levels: An Intermediate Apprenticeship is ideal if you are in a first job or have changed jobs and need to learn new skills. You’ll work towards Level 2 qualifications (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C) and Level 1 Functional Skills.
All Apprenticeships include a number of qualifications including a competence-based Certificate or Diploma, Functional Skills in English and maths and, sometimes, information technology. With some Apprenticeships, job-specific knowledge and skills are taught as a separate qualification. Apprenticeships also include awareness of employment rights and responsibilities as well as personal learning and thinking skills.
An Advanced Apprenticeship builds on the skills and knowledge achieved through experience or an Intermediate Apprenticeship. You’ll work towards Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels) and Level 2 Functional Skills.
There are no specific entry requirements to become an apprentice; however an employer may specify entry requirements for a particular job role, which may include English and maths.
A Higher Apprenticeship is equivalent to a foundation degree and you will need to have relevant employment experience in order to begin this course of training. The College can offer you support to find an Apprenticeship through our Job Shop: www.jobshopsussex.blogspot.co.uk or you can use the Apprenticeship vacancy system at www.apprenticeships.org.uk
