Our adult courses have enrolment dates throughout the year, meaning you can start your ideal course as early or as late as you would like. Study with us and you will gain a nationally recognised qualification which will help you to move forward in your chosen career. We cater for all abilities, so whether you are a complete beginner, or are looking to build on what you already know, you will find something to suit you. Did you know: at Sussex Downs you can take a degree, or even a post graduate qualification, validated by the University of Brighton? If you are looking to change career, we are here to help. Our relationship with local and national employers will help to highlight the opportunities available to you after your studies. In addition, at Sussex Downs College you will receive support to refresh your job search skills and interview techniques, as well as industry-specific training to help you re-enter the job market. FUTURE

No matter what stage of life you’re at, the opportunity to study has never been more within your reach. The Government’s nonmeans tested Advanced Learner Loan means anybody over the age of 19 can improve their qualifications on a ‘buy now, pay later’ basis. The College offers support in applying for the loan to help pay towards the costs of its advanced courses at Level 3-6 – which include A Levels, Access to Higher Education, Diplomas and Certificates. Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history and repayments start from the April after you have completed your course – and only then if your earnings are above £21,000 per year. If you’re interested in finding out more about Advanced Learner Loans, our fast facts will tell you all you need to know.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I APPLY FOR? It depends on the type of course you take and the cost of the course. The minimum loan amount is £300.

HOW IS THE LOAN PAID? The loan will be paid directly to the College once you have attended your course for two weeks or more.

HOW MANY LOANS CAN I APPLY FOR? You can apply for up to four loans, which can be taken out either one after the other or at the same time. For learners who take out a loan for an Access to Higher Education Diploma, complete it and progress to and complete a Student Finance English funded HE course, the balance of the loan relating to the Access to HE Diploma will be written off.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM ELIGIBLE? 1. You must be over 19 years old on the day you start the course. 2. You must be living in the UK on the day the course starts and have been a UK resident for three years prior to starting the course.

8

3. The course must be an approved Level 3 to 6 course. 4. The course must be delivered by an eligible provider such as Sussex Downs College.

HOW DO I APPLY? 1. You can apply either online at www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans or by post now. You can apply for a course that has already started after that date but not after a course has finished. 2. Applications can take up to five weeks to process but you can track your application. 3. You will need to know your National Insurance Number as no monies can be paid without this. 4. You will also need another source of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate.

WHAT ABOUT REPAYING THE LOAN? 1. You will not begin loan repayments until April 2017 - even if your course finishes before then. 2. Repayments of the loan, plus interest, will start once you reach the income threshold of £21,000. If your income should drop below this, repayments will be halted until the £21,000 threshold is reached again. 3. If you are self-employed, you will make repayments as part of your self-assessment in your tax return.

WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT STUDYING ONCE I HAVE TAKEN OUT THE LOAN? If you leave or change your course after the initial two weeks you will be liable to pay the full amount of the course fees for the programme.

WHAT IF I WANT TO PROGRESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION EVENTUALLY? If you apply for a loan to cover your Access to Higher Education course and then successfully complete a degree, you will not have to pay back your Advanced Learner Loan – it will be written off. To find out more about 19+ Advanced Learner Loans and which courses at Sussex Downs College are eligible for support, contact Admissions on 030 300 38555.

UNDERSTANDING LEVELS Sussex Downs College offers a wide variety of programmes. Some lead to nationally recognised qualifications at different levels, the details of which can be difficult to get to grips with. For a brief overview of how qualifications compare, take a look at the chart below, showing the different levels and what they can lead to.

In some cases you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to ensure you gain the background knowledge and skills you need. In others, as long as you have achieved a certain level of qualification, e.g GCSE at grade C, you can go on to higher study. If you are employed in a role that requires higher level skills and competence, you may be able to ‘jump’ a level.

HUMANITIES The Road to the White House Study and follow the razzmatazz, political infighting for the run-up to the American president election November 2016. This year’s presidential election is proving to be the most fascinating and unpredictable for half a century. Each week will include: how Americans elections work, what they mean to the ordinary citizens, how multiculturalism and gender effects voting patters. Time will be allowed to study media portrayal of candidates. Historical perspectives of previous general elections will be explored. Sessions will be discussion based and fun. Because of the nature of the subject weekly sessions will address current discourse. 6 or 7 sessions leading up to the election and 3 or 4 sessions following for evaluation, analysis and debate. 10 Weeks
