WELCOME As Principal and Chief Executive, I am both delighted and excited to welcome you to our adult course guide. Whilst Sussex Downs College is proud of its commitment to full-time 16-19 students, it is more than an FE College for school leavers. We offer learning opportunities to adults of all ages, whether you’d like to update and develop a skill, change career path, improve your job prospects or simply pursue a new hobby or interest and meet new people. Whatever your reason for studying, you will find a very wide range of courses and qualifications on offer in this guide. We also outline our support services, the facilities available and details of course fees. Finance needn’t be a barrier to gaining new skills and for some students who meet the criteria, fees can be reduced. Our adult courses have enrolment dates throughout the year, meaning you can start your ideal course as early or as late as you would like. Study with us and you will gain a nationally recognised qualification which will help you to move forward in your chosen career. We cater for all abilities, so whether you are a complete beginner, or are looking to build on what you already know, you will find something to suit you. Did you know: at Sussex Downs you can take a degree, or even a post graduate qualification, validated by the University of Brighton? If you are looking to change career, we are here to help. Our relationship with local and national employers will help to highlight the opportunities available to you after your studies. In addition, at Sussex Downs College you will receive support to refresh your job search skills and interview techniques, as well as industry-specific training to help you re-enter the job market. You are your best investment. Value your future. ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN

How do I know if I am eligible? 1. You must be over 19 years old on the day you start the course. 2. You must be living in the UK on the day the course starts and have been a UK resident for three years prior to starting the course. 3. The course must be an approved Level 3 to 6 course. 4. The course must be delivered by an eligible provider such as Sussex Downs College.

How do I apply?

NO MATTER WHAT STAGE OF LIFE YOU’RE AT,

1. You can apply either online at: www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan or by post. You can apply for a course after it has started but not after a course has finished.

the opportunity to study has never been more achievable. The government’s non-means tested Advanced Learner Loan means anybody over the age of 19 can improve their qualifications on a ‘buy now, pay later’ basis.

2. Applications can take up to five weeks to process - it is possible to track the progress of your application. 3. You will need to know your National Insurance Number as no monies can be paid without this.

Entering advanced courses at Level 3-6 and need help securing a loan? The College offers support for students applying for loans to cover A Levels, Access to Higher Education, Diplomas and Certificates. Receiving the loan doesn’t depend on household income or credit history, and repayments start from the April following the completion of your course (and only then if your earnings are above £21,000 per year).

4. You will also need another source of identity, such as a valid passport or birth certificate.

If you’re interested in finding out more about Advanced Learner Loans, our fast facts will tell you all you need to know:

How much money can I apply for? It depends on the type of course you take and the cost of the course. The minimum loan amount is £300.

How is the loan paid? The loan will be paid directly to the College once you have attended your course for two weeks or more.

How many loans can I apply for? You can apply for up to four loans, which can be taken out either one after the other or at the same time. Learners who take out a loan for an Access to Higher Education Diploma and complete it and following this progress to and complete a Student Finance England funded HE course, will have the balance of the loan relating to the Access to HE Diploma written off.

What about repaying the loan? 1. You will not begin loan repayments until the April after you have finished the course - even if your course finishes prior to this date. 2. Repayments of the loan, plus interest incurred, will start once you reach the income threshold of £21,000. If your income should drop below this, repayments will be halted until the £21,000 threshold is reached again. 3. If you are self-employed, you will make repayments as part of your self-assessment tax return.

What if I change my mind about studying once I have taken out the loan? If you leave or change your course after the initial two weeks you will be liable to pay the full amount of the course fees for the programme.

What if I want to progress to Higher Education eventually? If you apply for a loan to cover your Access to Higher Education course and then successfully complete a degree, the balance of any loan outstanding for the Access to HE Diploma will be written off. To find out more about 19+ Advanced Learner Loans and which courses at Sussex Downs College are eligible for support, contact Admissions on 030 300 39551.

Some lead to nationally recognised qualifications at different levels, the details of which can seem complicated. For a brief overview of how qualifications compare, take a look at the chart opposite, which shows the different levels and what they can lead to. In some cases you will need to start at Level 1 or 2 to ensure you gain the background knowledge and skill level required. In others, as long as you have achieved a certain level of qualification, e.g GCSE at grade C, you can go on to higher study. If you are employed in a role that requires higher level skills and competence, you may be able to ‘jump’ a level.

English for SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) Do you need English for work, study or everyday life? Do you want to improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills? Do you want to meet new people and make new friends? If yes, come and study English for Speakers of Other Languages at our Eastbourne or Newhaven campuses. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are for adults who are not fluent in English and want to improve their language skills for work, study and life in the UK. We offer a range of part-time ESOL courses for every level, available to study in the daytime or evening, in classes composed of other students who have the same level of English. Our experienced teachers use the most up-to-date materials and approaches to make sure each class is interesting, motivating and effective. Classes include group, pair and project work as well as computer-based activities. Here’s what some of our students say about learning English with us: “It has helped me to speak, listen, read and write in English. It also means that I can help my son with his homework, have friends and make appointments.” - Vensa “I have learned so much and have more confidence in myself. “ - Cesar

“I felt close to the rest of my class. The teacher worked hard to create a good atmosphere in the class.” - Nieves Why study ESOL? Our ESOL courses are designed to help you to improve your English language and your awareness of British culture and British values. We can also support you in successfully gaining positive progression into work, an apprenticeship, another college course, volunteering, or any other programme that would benefit you. Our courses consist of separate Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing courses. Our six levels consist of: • • • • • •

Pre-Entry Entry 1 Entry 2 Entry 3 Level 1 Level 2

Before you start your course, you will do an assessment to determine your level of Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening. From this assessment we will discuss with you which classes are best for you. When you start your course, your teacher will continue to assess you to find out more about your language needs. Your teacher will help you to decide on your targets and what you want to be able to achieve by the end of the course. During your course, you will review these targets and discuss your progress with your teacher. In each course, you learn and practise all four language skills:

• • • •

Reading Writing Speaking Listening

TEACHING, TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

Access to Higher Education Diploma: Teacher Education Our Access courses prepare people for degree-level study in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Teacher Education, Sciences and Health Studies. Many of our students go on to the Universities of Sussex, Brighton and Chichester (where we have some guaranteed interviews and some guaranteed places) and an increasing number of our students gain places at universities throughout Britain. The Access Course is ‘QAA approved’, which means that it is validated by LASER Learning Awards (formerly Open College Network). Advanced Learner Loans are available to cover the full course cost for students aged 19 and over; upon successful completion of a degree course, the balance of any loan outstanding for the Access to HE Diploma will be written off. 1 Year

What is a Foundation Degree?

• Enhanced individual welfare and tutorial support

A foundation Degree is equivalent to two years of a traditional Honours Degree. It is a practical, vocation qualification and many students go straight into employment afterwards. Some decide to study for an additional year and take a top-up course, either at Sussex Downs College or at another university, to obtain a full Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in either Arts (BA) or in Science (BSc).

• Our course fees on average are around £2000 cheaper per year than many other universities

What is a HNC/HND? A Higher National Diploma is a two-year practical course at an equivalent level to a foundation degree. Higher National Diplomas are the preferred vocational qualification for many industry sectors, such as Engineering and other technical subjects. These courses use practical learning and assessment to enable graduates to enter employment at a higher level. Higher National Certificates are a one-year course, as part of an HND or as a qualification in its own right.

• Smaller teaching groups, therefore more individual attention

• Excellent facilities including music and dance studios, a sport centre, training restaurant and workshops • Very good teaching and support - the QAA awarded Sussex Downs College top grades in all categories • £1000 Bursary to help with study expenses More information is available at: www.sussexdowns.ac.uk/he or email us at: highereducation@sussexdowns.ac.uk Application is through UCAS only
