Competitions and awards At Sussex Downs College, there will be opportunities to achieve national awards, gain performance recognition and win medals in regional competitions. Here are just a few examples from some of our recent students:

The Men’s Rugby Academy at the Lewes campus were crowned winners of a national competition. They won The British Colleges Sport Men’s Rugby Cup after a stunning game at Burton RFC, where they scored 50-0 against Birmingham Metropolitan College. Full-time Beauty Therapy student Stephanie Cottingham from the Lewes campus reached the national finals of the Student Electrotherapy Beauty Therapist Awards. She will also compete in the Worldskills UK national beauty therapy finals in November, after winning first place in the regional heat.

The Lewes campus student was selected as a finalist in the Royal Academy A Level Summer Online exhibition for her image, Poker. A further five students from the College reached the shortlisting stage. Lewes campus Production Arts students Alice Bull, Josh Meaton, Josh Attwood and John Piper received second place in the prestigious Ready Steady Light! Competition, for designing an exterior lighting scheme in just 180 minutes. Photography student Hannah Martin had her work selected for inclusion in a prestigious exhibition run by the Royal Academy of the Arts.

Drama and Theatre Studies student Hetti Bywater now has a major role playing Lucy Beale in Eastenders. The actress was cast in 2011 following her studies at the Lewes campus. Hettie has also performed in Doctors and Casualty. Chris Li (shown left) studied at the Lewes campus and is the founder and CEO of online retailer Luxury For Less, a leading multi-channel online retailer of bathroom equipment, furniture and accessories. The success of the company was recognised with a string of awards, including Small Online Business of the Year at the National Business Awards. Chris was also named Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Growing Business Awards.

COLLEGE FACILITIES Learning facilities Facilities include a recently-built Performing Arts Centre, visual art studios, media suites, a sports hall, well-equipped classrooms and a high-spec laboratory with full disabled access. There are also on-site hair and beauty salons – both of which are open to the public and mean students can gain first-hand experience with customers. Learning Centres As well as an Information Technology Centre, the campus has a well-resourced Learning Centre to accommodate individual or group study outside of lessons. iLearn iLearn is the College’s online learning environment for students, to help support learning outside of lesson time. Applying to the College On receipt of your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s application an interview date is sent out. At interview, we make sure your child has chosen the right course for them and help them with details about the course or programme. We encourage parents to attend. Usually an offer is made with conditions like GCSE grade requirements. Occasionally a referral will be made to consider alternative options. We recommend an introductory day visit to the College at the end of the summer for your child to attend classes in the subjects they have chosen. Instructions, student support and enrolment details will be despatched during the summer about what to do on GCSE results day.

Beginning College The induction period is seen as an opportunity to make the transition from school to College as easy as possible. TRAINEESHIPS... helping you to excel in the workplace Employers tell us they are concerned that young people can sometimes lack the right skills and attitudes when they apply for an Apprenticeship or other employment. To help overcome this, Traineeships aim to help you develop the skills you need to secure and succeed in employment, including Apprenticeships. Traineeships offer you the opportunity to carry out a substantial work placement and work skills training, alongside support to improve your English and maths. SHORT SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES If a full-time course is not what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking (or are ready for) right now, then the College runs a number of short programmes. With various start dates throughout the year, these programmes prepare you for your next steps to College or work with training and are individually tailored to meet your needs. Exciting experiences are arranged to develop your skills through team building, community projects and vocational skills training, alongside ensuring your maths and English skills continue to develop. Popular examples of these programmes include the Princes Trust Programme, Workskills and Opt In To and new ones are always being developed. LEVEL 2 PROGRAMME The Level 2 Programme is for students to gain or improve GCSE and vocational Level 2 qualifications to progress to Level 3 courses. For many of our students, the Level 2 programme is a year to build a firm base from which to take further study or move into employment. The programme will support you in developing a wide range of skills and knowledge and in building your confidence. Many of our students choose to study one vocational qualification, the equivalent of two GCSEs, while improving their skills and qualifications in maths and English. Others choose to follow a more mixed programme, taking five GCSEs or equivalent in a range of different subjects, or a combination of AS and Level 2 courses. The programme that you choose to follow will be discussed at interview and is tailored to your career aspirations and interests. ACCESS TO HE (HIGHER EDUCATION) WHAT IS AN ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COURSE? Access courses offer adults over the age of 19 a genuine alternative to A Levels as a means of entry into Higher Education. Courses have been created which still give you the time to lead your own life – an important consideration for adult students! However, they are 10 month intensive courses to help committed learners gain a university place, so dedication is required. NATIONALLY RECOGNISED QUALIFICATION? The Access Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification - there are now around 1,000 Access courses running across the country and they are ‘QAA approved’, which means that the Quality Assurance agency for higher education in England approves them as suitable for access to degree courses. They are validated by LASER Learning Awards. Our Access courses have been designed in close collaboration with the universities of Sussex and Brighton. They maintain an excellent reputation both in - and increasingly beyond - the South East region.

WHO IS IT FOR? Often, people who decide to join an Access course feel they didn’t fulfil their potential at school. They may have spent many years in unsatisfying work, been at home looking after children or have otherwise been in a situation where they needed to take a decision about bringing about a change in their lives. What they all have in common is a thirst for knowledge and a desire to carry on with their education. WHAT WILL I STUDY? A number of different pathways are offered, which run as either day time or evening pathways. Access students will commence their studies in September and the course lasts approximately 36 weeks, normally finishing in the first or second week of July the following year. All students on both the day and evening pathways attend classes in study skills, maths, and computer literacy, as well as read academic texts. All students complete an individual research project, and study at least six subject units. Both the day and evening pathways lead to the same qualification.

This course follows on from the AS course. You will undertake two units, including developmental exploration of the theme of identity. This will be supported by a personal study consisting of an essay based on your exploration of the theme in artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; work, and how they relate to your own experiments.

This is a practical course divided into 2 units. On this course you will undertake 3 practical projects where you will learn about different aspects of photography using both film based and digital technology. You will learn how to shoot, process and print photographic film as well as develop some picture editing skills in Photoshop. You will explore composition, visual communication and develop your ability to analyse what makes images effective.

This exciting and creative course encourages you to explore the visual language of photography. You will develop your skills with black and white film and processing, and explore digital photography using Photoshop and other programmes. You will investigate the power of light, recording it through the camera and experiment with darkroom processes, as well as gain an understanding of how the camera controls can effect your images. You will explore composition and formal elements, both through practical activities and by exploring the work of other photographers and artists. The Visual Arts department regularly arranges visits to exhibitions, galleries and museums here and abroad with New York, Chicago and Madrid being recent destinations.

The course is divided into two units. The first is coursework, where you will be introduced to a range of techniques and processes. The second is the externally set assignment, where you work to theme and demonstrate your skills, research and understanding of the subject. What can I do after this course? After successful completion of this course you can progress on to the second year, A2 Textile Design, which will then convert into a full A level qualification.

The coursework will introduce you to further ways of creating images including timebased applications and studio lighting. This is a practical course but you will also submit a personal study research essay of approximately 3,000 words in which you investigate aspects of photography relevant to your own work. The set assignment will be based on a choice of themes set by the exam board. What can I do after this course? You can either use the qualification and portfolio to apply for jobs, or you can go on to a diploma, foundation degree or degree in photography at university. All courses would expect to interview you with your portfolio as evidence of your skills and knowledge.

What will I study? Have you ever wondered how to tell if someone is lying, or if people judge others on their accent? These are some of the issues looed at in Unit 1 of this course, where we explore the whole range of human communication (from the way we think to Facebook) and develop the skills to understand it. The course combines theoretical and practical activities, which will enable you to be a more confident and knowledgeable communicator. In unit 2 you will carry out an independent study, exploring what they mean at a personal and cultural level. This course can provide a pathway to Communication and Culture A2, which will give you a full A Level qualification. However, Communication and Culture also makes a good AS subject. A number of students each year take the subject as a fourth AS Level to show a breadth to their education and the development of practical communication skills.

This course is a good preparation for higher education. There are many university courses with a focus on culture and communication. It is accepted as an entry qualification for other degree courses. The emphasis on personal communication makes Communication and Culture A2 relevant to any career involving communicating.

In the first unit you will take the ideas from AS Level further, through studying theory in more depth and applying them to issues in communication. You will also explore cultural practices such as 'fictions' that are transmitted through, for example, fairy tales or the news. We also consider cultural products, for example how Apple creates technological objects of desire. In the second unit you will explore these ideas further in an independent written study and a creative media piece on a subject of your choice. Previous examples have included the cultural meanings of celebrities wearing fur (leading to a documentary) and the exploration of how McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s targets children (developed into a short horror film).

What will I study?

What will I study? This course is split into two elements; exam and coursework. The exam element looks critically at a range of media forms from music videos to magazine adverts. Previous case studies have included the cult of celebrity, the London riots and teen delinquency. This course follows on from the Music BTEC Level 3 Certificate and will offer students the key knowledge and practical skills required for their potential chosen career as a freelance musician. They will have three lessons per week (four hours' tuition) and will study three subject areas: arranging music, music and sound for the moving image and aural perception skills. There will be an opportunity for each student to carry out an in-depth special subject investigation into a chosen area of their interest. What can I do after this course? What will I study? On this course you will study three areas. The first area is solo recital. Although only one solo recital is required for the exam, at ESAM you will perform four recitals during the year, which gives you more experience and the opportunity to produce your best performance. Classroom listening and learning and written work is enhanced by trips to hear professional performances. The third area of study is composition. What will I study? This Music Technology AS course explores the technical â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;behind the scenesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; work of the pop music world. On this course you will learn how to record pop music including live multi-tracking, and how to produce your own sequenced arrangement of a well-known song. You need to have completed the Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA), showing your potential for progression to the higher level. A formal assessment at the end of the CSLA will determine progression onto the Higher Sports Leadership Certificate (HSLC).

You will need to meet our standard entry requirements. See page 20 for further information. As part of the above this must include GCSEs in Double Science at grades CC or above and English at grade C or above. If you are taking separate sciences at GCSE, a minimum of grade C is required in both. GCSE PE is not essential, but a grade C or above is required if taken.

What will I study? On this course you will learn to lead groups of people from varying backgrounds, ages and abilities. All students must complete a 10 hour minimum voluntary leadership placement in the community. The following units are studied: organisational skills, safety in sport, know your friends and first aid. What can I do after this course? This course can provide a pathway to The Higher Sports Leadership Certificate (HSLC ) in your second year of study at the College. You will need to pass a formal assessment in order to progress on to the HSLC. This is good preparation for teaching/coaching jobs and general leadership.

What will I study? This is an exciting course where you will complete seven units of study about sport leadership. You will also complete 30 hours of community sports work with children, and people with disabilities. The units of study include: developing leadership skills, provision of sport within the community, leading sessions designed to improve fitness, organising and leading a sports event or competition, legal and ethical responsibilities when working with others, leading sport/activity sessions for children and leading sport/activity sessions for disabled people.
