We have two campuses; one on the south coast at Eastbourne and one in the historic county town of Lewes. We are a government college with accreditation from the British Council for our English language provision. Where you will live We have dedicated Accommodation Officers who will do their very best to match your living requirements with our accommodation options. For your safety and comfort, all of our accommodation is thoroughly checked and monitored by our Accommodation and Welfare staff in accordance with the standards set out in the British Council Accreditation Scheme. Sussex Downs College offers two categories of accommodation for students; homestay accommodation (with meals) and residential accommodation.

Residential accommodation Sussex Downs College offers three different types of residential accommodation: residential accommodation with meals, residential accommodation on a self-catering basis and the on-campus residence, Caburn House.
Residential accommodation with meals
(Eastbourne and Lewes) Homestay accommodation with meals is ideal if you wish to enjoy home comforts and would like to take every opportunity to practise conversational English. Your meals are included in the price you pay. You will normally eat with your host and share the common living areas with them. Our homestay providers will welcome you into their home and make you feel part of their household, encouraging you and supporting you throughout your studies. Homestay accommodation with meals includes: Private bedroom with access to a quiet study area O Laundry facilities provided at least once a week O Household bills (excluding telephone) O Breakfast and evening meals on weekdays and breakfast, a small lunch and evening meals at the weekends O

General information
College activities You can participate in a wide range of activities that will support your learning, enabling you to learn new skills and make new friends. Sport at Sussex Downs College We welcome students who share our passion for sport. You will be able to participate in the sport of your choice at the level you enjoy. Joining one of our sports teams is an excellent way to keep fit and make new friends, whilst practising your English with native speakers. Each campus is equipped with a wide range of sporting amenities and there are leisure centres, swimming pools, gyms and athletics training facilities located on or next to each campus. The towns of Lewes and Eastbourne both have rich sporting traditions. Each town has football, hockey and rugby teams, and you will be in easy reach of London Premiership football and rugby clubs. Eastbourne also hosts a major international tennis tournament each year. The nearby city of Brighton & Hove has championshipwinning cricket and basketball teams and a Championship League football team.

Sports Academies Sussex Downs College offers an exciting programme which allows you to combine your studies with the opportunity to develop your sporting ability at a high level. Sports Academies* are offered at both our Eastbourne and Lewes campus. In Eastbourne we offer a Sports Academy in Golf. At Lewes we offer Sports Academies in Men’s Football, Men’s Rugby, Women’s Netball and Women’s Football. These combine weekly training with high level coaching and competition.

You can choose from a wide range of short and longterm English language courses, each designed to help you achieve your language goals. Sussex Downs College is an excellent choice for English language learning. We are proud to be a leading UK government-funded college for the teaching of English, following our British Council inspection in 2010*. You will study in a lively, positive atmosphere and you will be fully supported by a caring and dedicated team who appreciate your needs as an international student. Classes are multinational and you will study alongside students who have a similar level of English to yourself. You can expect an average class size of 13 students, with a maximum of 19 students per class. There are many opportunities to meet UK students and take part in activities such as our Enrichment programme. This includes sports, music, photography, various clubs and parties. Each year more than 450 students from around the world study on this popular and flexible English language course. It is designed to help you improve your general English, gain an English language qualification and study a wide range of options relevant to your interests or personal goals. You can choose from various start dates and course lengths depending on your study objectives.
You will enjoy modern classroom and IT facilities together with language laboratories. There is also a well-resourced Languages Self Access Centre on the Lewes campus. You can choose to study in Lewes, a beautiful historic town close to the city of Brighton & Hove, or in Eastbourne, a vibrant seaside resort. We offer different options at each campus so please see the table opposite to help you with your choice.
Our Short Course is offered at our Eastbourne campus and is ideal if you wish to study for short periods of time. You can join this course on most Mondays during the academic year. Our Long Course is offered at both the Eastbourne and Lewes campuses.

This programme gives you the opportunity to combine English language with optional supplementary academic or vocational studies such as GCSEs or BTEC qualifications. It is an excellent choice if you wish to progress on to an academic or vocational course, such as A Levels or BTECs, but do not have the required level of English or academic background to do so. In 2013 our students achieved an 100% progression rate for further academic study, either at Sussex Downs College or at another UK or overseas institution. You can choose to study two GCSEs, one GCSE and a BTEC Certificate, or a BTEC Extended Certificate, as supplementary studies. The Adult Summer course is popular with students from all over the world. You can choose from three start dates during the summer and study for a length of time that suits you. You will learn in multinational classes using up-to-date materials and resources, studying alongside students who have a similar level of English to yourself. You can combine your studies with our optional social programme which includes activities and excursions to some of the most popular tourist and cultural destinations in the South East of England. Our Adult Summer Course is recommended as excellent preparation for future academic or vocational studies. It gives you the opportunity to take the IELTS test during July or August at the IELTS Test Centre located on our Eastbourne campus, if required.

Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) Preparation Summer Course
This course is ideal for students who already have an upper-intermediate level of English and wish to receive intensive preparation for and take the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) exam. In 2013 our students achieved an impressive 100% pass rate. It will help you to improve all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. It will also further develop your vocabulary and grammar and give you an appreciation of informal and formal styles in writing. All of these skills are essential to your success when taking the FCE exam.

This combines General English with various options and can be joined from 30th June 2014. You can combine your studies with our optional social programme, which includes activities and excursions to some of the most popular tourist destinations in the South East of England as pictured on page 22. By taking part you will be sure to make the most of your time in the UK. The FCE qualification is internationally recognised by employers and universities and demonstrates that you are ready to work or study in an English-speaking environment. It is also accepted by the UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) as a Secure English Language Test for Tier 4 Student Visa applications, if required*.

The International Foundation Year is a one year fast track course, designed to fully prepare you for a demanding university degree programme. It offers you the benefit off achieving an International Foundation Year qualification at the same time as internationally recognised AS or A2 level qualifications. You can choose from seven different pathways: Applied Earth Sciences, Business, Computing, Engineering, Maths, Science and Sociology. For Applied Earth Sciences, Business, Science and Sociology pathways, you will study three academic subjects at AS Level. For Engineering, Maths and Computing pathways, you will study both AS and A2 Level Maths in addition to one further subject at AS Level. Alongside your academic courses you will also study English language, IELTS and Study Skills as well as preparing a 2,500 word research project and formal presentation. Upon successful completion, you will be able to progress to an undergraduate degree programme at one off our partner universities, shown opposite. Please note that for some degree programmes, there may be specific subject requirements. In addition, a range off other UK and overseas universities have accepted successful students from our International Foundation Year programme, subject to their entry criteria and availability. Your AS and A2 Level classes will include UK students, making it excellent preparation for university. Your Personal Tutor will offer you advice and guidance on the university application process and will fully support you throughout your studies.

BTEC Diploma (90 credits) (one year) Equivalent to three AS Levels. You can also choose to take a further year of study to achieve a BTEC Extended Diploma (180 credits). You will study alongside UK students, giving you the opportunity to develop your English language skills and to experience British culture. All tutors are practising artists, designers and craftsmen and women, who will support you throughout your course and encourage you to develop your creative and analytical skills. The programme begins with diagnostic study where you develop your research, drawing, making, thinking and problem-solving skills. You will also work with new materials and processes. The main areas of specialist study are: fine art, graphics and illustration, fashion and textiles, 3D Design and Crafts (metal, wood, ceramics and glass).

The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is an intensive, practical and exciting one year course, designed to fully prepare you for an art or design-based university programme.

Another important element of this course is Contextual Studies, which includes elements of Art and Cultural History and Critical Studies (the study of society and theories of art production). This theoretical aspect of the course will enable you to critically assess works of art in your written and spoken English. As part of your course you will be able to participate in field trips, visit relevant art exhibitions and galleries, as well as developing your own portfolio of work. You will also receive additional English language support to help you with essay writing and new vocabulary, as well as university guidance and application support. A Foundation Degree is studied over two years and is equivalent to two years of a traditional honours degree. It is a qualification in itself and many students gain employment or decide to study for one more year by doing a ‘Top-Up’ honours course. You will study alongside UK students in the supportive environment of Sussex Downs College. Successful candidates will have the option to apply for a one year Top-Up honours degree, to gain a BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons). You can study a Top-Up honours degree in Digital Media Design or Music Production and Creative Recording at Sussex Downs College. Alternatively, you can apply for a relevant Top-Up honours degree at the University of Brighton or at another British university. We offer a wide range of courses that are relevant to the modern global workplace, giving you comprehensive practical and theoretical training for your chosen career. Many Foundation Degrees have work placements as part of the course.

Write a 150 word Student Profile on a separate sheet of paper indicating why you wish to study in the UK, your career or education plans, hobbies and interests in order that we may assess your level of English. Include information on your ability to speak and understand spoken English.

Free online overseas bank transfers Sussex Downs College has arranged an effective method of international payment through the Pay to Study Service. This service is free to use and does not incur bank charges. You will also benefit from significantly beneficial exchange rates. Pay to Study allows you to make payments using your home currency at your local bank, so there is no need to buy sterling from your bank prior to transferring. This option is only available if you have already received an invoice from Sussex Downs College. You can track your payments online, 24 hours a day, so you will not need to contact the College for confirmation. All visa authorities now accept Pay to Study receipts as a means of evidencing payment of tuition fees.
