5-step guide to becoming a successful DJ 1

TAG MAGAZINE 2015

As the rise of dance music culture is becoming more of the norm than in previous years and the massive uproar in music technology ever expanding, there has been a massive up-rise of aspiring music producers and DJs. From the constant changes in genres and sounds, more DJs and producers are stepping on the scene – such as myself. As a result of this it’s getting harder for DJs/producers to get out there. So I’m going to give a couple of tips on how to become a more successful yet grounded DJ/producer.

2

Make Soundcloud your homepage

In my opinion one of the best things about being a DJ/producer is finding new music and the best way of finding music nowadays is on the internet, but don’t just use Soundcloud, use other websites such as Juno, Discogs, Beatport and even YouTube to discover new music. The best thing about finding new music is that you have more tracks in your sets and mixes, people will start asking, “What’s this tune?” so use this to your advantage. Also finding new music will help inspire you as a producer to explore and experiment with different sounds.

Practise, practise, practise:

This is probably the most important tip. Practice makes perfect simple as that. Truth is that no one is even going to bat an eyelid at a DJ who can’t even beat-match. Another good thing about practising is that you can improve your mixing and producing techniques, which eventually makes you a better all round DJ.

3

Promote, promote, promote

If you’re serious about getting your music and mixes out there, promoting is the way to go. Without telling people, no-one’s going to even know if you have music or mixes out. With the massive rise in the use of social media, social media is the best way to go if you want to promote your stuff. Another trick of the trade is to send your mixes/tracks to artists and labels you like. Keep sending these labels your stuff and they will eventually notice. 2

4

Don’t take requests

From previous experience being asked to do requests is the most annoying thing as a DJ. Having someone come up to you and asking “Can you play some Drake?” You want to tell them to do one. You’re the DJ, you’re going to play what you want to play or what you think will get the dancefloor going. 9 times out of 10 Drake’s not the solution. Why should you sacrifice your set for somebody else’s personal preference?

SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE EXTENDED DIPLOMA CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

5

Expand your sound – Don’t stick to one genre This goes for both DJs and producers. Samegenre DJs are becoming more of a normality than having a kebab on a night out. In my view it’s good to be a multi-genre DJ. Even if you are only playing a range of sub-genres in your sets and mixes, it’s better than rinsing 128 BPM EDM tracks with the same sort of drop. Fact is people will get bored easily. Dance music fans and DJs are always looking for new sounds and the next big thing. The more individual your sets and mixes are, the more recognition you will get – as I’ve learnt from previous experience.

BACK TO YOUR Remember Mario and Pikachu? Then, your only problems were trying to reach the boss level on your latest game. We’re going to revisit some of your favourite childhood games and toys to bring back some of those memories; you’ll be feeling nothing but nostalgia when you’ve finished reading.

N

ow let’s be honest, we’ve all played a Mario game before, I mean, come on, who didn’t play Mario growing up? He’s everyone’s favourite plumber and the most famous games character in history. The game begins with a letter from Princess Peach inviting Mario to come to her castle for cake. However, when he arrives, Mario discovers that Bowser has invaded the castle and has taken the princess away and trapped her. The castle has paintings that are portals to different worlds and in these different worlds are stars that will help you rescue Princess Peach – but not before you have a final battle with Bowser. I’m pretty sure that most of us have played this game and loved it; it is one that we all probably treasure as one of our favourites. Even though the game has been remade in recent years, for us 90s kids, nothing will be better than the original.

CHILDHOOD The Japanese company Nintendo launched the first Game Boy in 1989. Since then, over 100 million consoles have been sold. However, you’re probably more likely to remember the Game Boy Color, which was released almost 10 years later. Popular games for this device included characters such as Mario and friends, as well as all the Pokémon that we know and love. These days we have our Nintendo Wii and DS, leaving the Game Boy behind, but not forgotten. Known for its essential role in the video gaming industry’s jump from 2D to 3D computer graphics, the Game Boy remains the console which really started the video game craze.

I’m sure it was fun for all to shout, “Pikachu, I choose you!” at the top of their lungs, even if you weren’t playing the game. Pokémon Cards weren’t necessarily for everyone, but those who owned them were just crazy about these colourful, rectangular pieces of cardboard. Fans of this trading card game probably would’ve had mountains of cards piling up, ready to play and trade with their

friends or even just to collect. Even now there are probably still hundreds just lying around their house from when they were younger. There were so many different kinds of cards, making it incredibly difficult to obtain the rare cards, which were so desperately wanted. These days, Pokémon Cards are less likely to be played with and more likely to be sold for ridiculous amounts of money on Ebay.

Festivals on a budget

TAG MAGAZINE 2015

T

his is the guide you need to tell you about some cheaper alternatives to the big festivals – to save you money and still guarantee you a good time this summer. Festivals, love them or hate them, are massive all around the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people fight for tickets to attend each year. Festivals here in the UK such as Glastonbury, Reading, and Isle of Wight retain their spots on the list as the biggest and most popular festivals in the country and are renowned for having the most expensive ticket prices. 2015 will mark the first Wildlife festival at Brighton City Airport (actually located outside of Brighton at Shoreham). Disclosure and Rudimental teamed up with festival

6

organisers to bring this massive festival to the south east. Wildlife features global superstars such as Nas, Sam Smith and Mark Ronson. This inaugural festival which takes place this June 5–6, has nearly sold out all of its tickets that are priced at £55 for one day or £99 for both days. The Great Escape in Brighton was founded in 2006 and has since has been dubbed as ‘Europe’s leading festival for new music’ as it showcases a whole bunch of unsigned artists and indie acts over a 3-day period. The format of this festival is unique and different to others as it hosts over 300 acts across different venues such as the Brighton Dome and Komedia across the whole weekend. The show could appeal to a wide audience with its multi-genre format. Weekend tickets for the Great Escape cost only £55. This festival takes place in May each year. For people who have to look after young children, Rugfest in Wallingford is perfect as it provides children’s play areas and family-friendly music. Ticket prices start at £20 for weekend passes. A totally different festival experience this year at London’s Olympic Park on September 12th

is the Holi Festival of Colours. This festival includes mainly dance music but gives the people who attend the chance to throw paint powder around the place, which creates an unforgettable experience. Ticket prices start at £38.99 and this ticket price includes bags of gulal powder to use for while you attend the event.

WE ARE FSTVL is a new EDM (electronic dance music) festival at Upminster in east London. It features over 120 artists across 12 different stages for 50,000 people each year. This festival has won the award for ‘Best New Festival’ and ‘Best Medium-Sized Festival’ and has a headline performance from the massively popular Gorgon City this May. Prices start at £39 for early birds for a day ticket and £135 for a weekend ticket. If DJs and lightshows are your thing, then WE ARE FSTVL is the place to be this summer.

An Evening with Example Example burst on to the music scene with his debut album ‘What We Made’ way back in 2007 and since then he has gone on to create another 4 successful albums, won an array of prestigious awards, partaken in a whole host of big festivals globally and sold

out arenas nationwide. 32-year-old Fulhamborn Eliott Gleave’s unique clash of trance and pop has hypnotized the youth of today and made him one of the biggest stars in the country. So when Gleave announced his annual UK tour for 2014, thousands were shocked by his idea to perform not in arenas, but in small theatres and clubs. When asked over Twitter, why he chose to do this he responded that he “wanted to see more fans than ever before and visit places he would never usually play” . A lot of young people from Eastbourne were delighted with his decision to come and play a show at the Winter Gardens on 6 November 2014. Having previously seen him play in Brighton over 2 years ago, I was determined to attend the concert. His energetic performance, elaborate production, and the atmosphere is indescribable. It is truly hard to come down after the stage show Example provides.

AT THE CONCERT

“ I would LOVE

to see Example

again and again! ”

After entering the venue, just before Example was due on, I saw an excited crowd eagerly awaiting an appearance from the star. Example appeared on stage on time (which unfortunately nowadays is rare for big celebrity names) and instantly started belting out hit after hit. His 90-minute set started with his number one hit ‘Stay Awake’. Example genuinely looked happy to be on stage and the reaction from his audience gave him 100% more energy. Example’s signature crowd pleaser ‘Girls on Shoulders’ was not a stranger at this gig, as well as the fist-pumping and jumping. The auditorium was full to the brim with a very sweaty, excited audience. I found it fascinating that the age ranges in the crowd were so diverse. I saw middle-aged people as well as young adults, teenagers and children. It really brought the town together having such a headline name perform here.

Example battled through his mammoth 19 song set list which boasted not only his biggest hits but also a large amount of the newer, unknown album tracks from his most recent release ‘Live Life Living’, which came out in July 2014. Even though some of his newer material wasn’t as well known, the crowd still enjoyed themselves. His closing song was his biggest single to date, ‘Changed The Way You Kissed Me’ when Gleave started singing it, he received a deafening roar that filled the auditorium wall to wall, the crowd went crazy and danced throughout the whole song!

WHAT I THOUGHT Overall, the concert was an amazing night and definitely confirmed that I WOULD LOVE to see Example again and again. His professionalism along with his amazing light show and an energetic crowd is enough to draw people in. Out of 10, I would give the concert a solid 9.5. The only downside to the whole event was the overly strict security, but this is understandable as it was Eastbourne’s first big concert for years and they would not want anything to go wrong!

Back to the past with a change of wardrobe! Fashion is an industry said to be always looking to the future, constantly changing with the seasons. However it seems the past has caught up and vintage is to the fore. Whether it be modern designs on the high street that are inspired by a specific era or racking through charity shops to find that one piece made before you were born, there is no way to escape the pull of the past, so embrace it! You could be 90s grunge or 80s glam and still be on-trend, but one era of fashion that will never leave any clothes lover’s heart is the 1950s. Poodle skirts and leather jackets are staple items for your rockabilly and pin-up wardrobes. So, guys and dolls – fix your hair and never miss a beat as you step back to the 50s. Female fashion that has evolved through time is the pin-up. Traditionally a style featured on wartime posters or magazines as encouragement for the soldiers, showcasing attractive women in figure-hugging clothes. No longer is this just on paper, it is also on the streets. This trend is growing and is constantly being modified by high street shops. In the past the likes of Marilyn Monroe sported this style making it iconic and a style

SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE EXTENDED DIPLOMA CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

to be passed down to be inspired by, but now that modern stars such as Christina Aguilera are now showcasing it, the 50s style is here to stay. Pencil skirts, red lipstick and synched-in waists are a must to get your pin-up girl look. Second-hand vintage shops are great for finding additions to your closet but even if that isn’t to your taste Brighton and London are full of 50s-inspired clothing shops, giving you a chance to source the required gear at a reasonable price without the fear of breaking an antique. Places like Collectif have an extensive collection whatever your pin-up style. Go on – spend that hard-earned cash on something you’ve wanted for so long! When you think ‘50s fashion for guys’ it’s instantly the Danny Zucco look or a youthful Elvis Presley. Slicked back sides with a quiff taller than most, tight jeans and white tee shirt, and you will not be mistaken. This is almost like the male version of the pin-up travelling through the years to develop into the perfect greaser look. Front man of the Arctic

Lights Camera Vintage

Monkeys, Alex Turner is a keen supporter of this statement style. It’s almost like the high street shops are beckoning the male population to adopt this style once again, with leather jackets being featured whatever the season and the rest is just basics. No matter how easy it is to achieve the look with high street clothing some may yearn for the real deal when it come to the classic leather biker jacket. This is easily attainable along the Brighton lanes, travel a little and it will be worth it, you’ll have a statement piece to last you a lifetime! If you do want to find out more about vintage fashion and the lifestyle and entertainment that goes with the look, then to the internet you go. Blogs like Vixen Vintage will keep you inspired, maybe check out the sparkling burlesque nightlife to add to your vintage lifestyle.

ASPIRING MUSICIAN

As a musician, I’ve met many obstacles to reach my goals. I’ve overcome most and although I am still challenged in some areas. I feel like I have a much wider perspective on the music industry than I did when I introduced myself to it all the way back in April 2013. To help some of you out, I’m going to share some tips on how you can get started as a musician, how you can develop your craft, and what you can do to increase your viewership/fan-base. By applying these tips, I have, in just over a year, signed a record deal, played at the O2 academy, had the pleasure of having recognition from Conor Maynard, Amber Rose, Kevin McCall, Rizzle Kicks, Bastille, Maverick Sabre, Rudimental, MNEK, and heaps more. I‘ve sold out headline performances, recorded an EP, had shows overseas, and that’s only the beginning for me, and this is only the beginning for you.

14

You may have heard of this upcoming teen artist, Sam Tompkins. Online, he is dominating Twitter with his growing fan base, YouTube subscribers and Facebook followers and all this in just under a year. Sam is currrently studying Creative Media Production at Sussex Downs College, although it has no direct correlation with music, he believes he should always have something to fall back on. Recently travelling to Copenhagen, Sam was given the chance to work with one of the biggest producers in Denmark known as ‘Hedegaard’, for a long weekend, after of which I was lucky enough to speak to Sam Tompkins himself, and he told Tag

We spoke to Sam’s manager and close friend who hooked Sam up with a producer who signed him to the record label ‘blu mammoth’. He tells us ‘The journey so far has been amazing”. In six months he went from performing at open mic to performing at the O2 academy. Asking Sam, ‘Performing is a very personal thing, how do you cope with negative comments? ’ He replied “When I’m performing I shut off my mind, but when I’m writing it’s a completely different story”. We will certainly be looking forward to what Sam Tompkins has to offer us in 2015. If you have any questions, tweet @SamTompkinsUK. So take a peak at the page opposite and read Sam’s 5 top tips that have enabled him to get so far in so little time.

Social Media It’s very competitive out there in the big world of music. Technology is at an all-time high and to compete with others, you want to be at the biggest advantage possible. This means that you may have to use Twitter and Instagram to see your music reach a wider audience. Videos, statuses, tweets, and pictures can all help you gain a widespread fan-base. I have an eclectic online following of 40,000, which really helps with promotion.

2

Busking When I started out as a musician, I lacked in confidence a lot. The thing that helped me with that was busking. Busking is street performing. You will learn a lot about performance from this if you choose to take it seriously; it can also be majorly lucrative too. A good performer can speak to audiences, provide them with entertainment, and make money all at once.

3

Business cards

SAM TOMPKINS – BLU MAMMOTH

4

Positive Mindset and Persistence This may sound very clichéd, but if you think you can do something, you can do it. In an over-saturated industry it is so hard to stand out, so you need to show every interested party exactly what you’re about. You’ve got to take every opportunity you can, make good first impressions, and most importantly – stay poasitive. You will get put down constantly, but if you show persistence you will overcome any obstacle. Hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard.

When performing, you will constantly be spoken to about your music afterwards, before or sometimes during. Fortunately if you have business cards, you can give the intrigued audience member all the information about yourself in one small package. This means you can speak to more people about your music, in less time.

5

Learn an instrument For me, this was the most useful tool to get where I am today. I started busking without anything but my voice. I quickly realised that having a guitar changed things and made more people stop. I started playing the guitar a year ago and not only is it a great tool to stand out, it is also powerful when song writing.

FILL YOUR GAP YEAR…

…with unforgetable overseas once-in-a-lifetime experiences

M

any young people jet off around the globe to make a final farewell to their childhood before they embark on the next leg of their life – university. It’s an opportunity to experience the lives of the local communities and also get to see the world as it really is.

Volunteering

Some packages of volunteering also benefit from accommodation and meals as part of the trip. One of the top attractions for all gap year goers is Thailand. From the beautiful islands and picturesque beaches to the cultural richness that the capital, Bangkok, has to offer. Realgap.co.uk offers various

experiences from teaching to building small farms or safe play areas for the local children. From a 2-week period to a 12-week period commencing from a number of different dates. Prices range from around £675 to £1,200. Watch out when booking these types of trips

because some of the ones offered by realgap.co.uk don’t include international travel and return transfers. You can’t talk about gap year volunteering without mentioning Africa. Many different projects are in need of volunteers to help out by providing a range of assistance to those who need it, for example sports coaching at disadvantaged communities in Cape Town, South Africa. If you’re interested in improving the quality of life of others then volunteering is for you. This is truly invaluable work experience. Find out all you need to know about the volunteering in Africa at www.africanimpact.com/ volunteer-impacts.

Backpacking

Australia and New Zealand are two countries which have long been favourites for backpackers. In New Zealand you can start in Auckland – the largest city in the country. Often the first view of New Zealand that newcomers get is the Haurki Gulf filled with yachts. The website workaway.info/hostlist-NZ lists over 300 hosts who will let you stay with them and give you meals in return for work. It could be helping out on a farm, helping a family renovate an old house or even helping a couple run a luxury B&B that they will let you stay in – and use the spa. Australia has over 750 hosts offering a similar variety of hosts who need your help. Of course you still have to pay for the flight. The key thing to remember on a gap year is keeping you and your friends safe and always buy travel insurance.

CURTAIN GOES UP AT EASTBOURNE When was the last time you went to the theatre? Have you ever been to the theatre? Good question isn’t it!

I know the last time I went, I was surrounded by much taller people, men dressed and acting as women and I regularly shouted “He’s behind you!”. If you haven’t guessed it, I saw the pantomime at the ripe age of 10. Is that theatre? No, not really. Stimulating plays, challenging ideas and classic tales is what often defines theatre, pantomime does not. So with this in mind, and feeling rather like I have missed out on something special, I took to our local Devonshire Park Theatre and settled for Three Men In a Boat – a book turned theatre show – boasting comedic value, I could think of nothing better to showcase the theatre experience. Bearing in mind I rarely read anything 18

Written and designed by Megan Carter

before 1999, I had no idea what I was in for, but I was pleasantly surprised. Flaunting bursts of song, happily tending to my musical preference, as well as funny memoirs of the three men’s voyage down the River Thames in a small boat. Energetic and bubbly, it was truly uplifting and light hearted. With comedic characters and high-class acting, it was a pure delight to sit back and watch. Although I was there to see the play, the whole experience of the theatre is the reason I’m writing this article. So often are we trapped to our phones, computers and tablet screens, that we forget the hidden gems in our local town. I’m not saying chuck your phone away, but maybe heading to your local theatre once in a while wouldn’t do you any harm, in fact it’ll be a

nice change in pace and scenery. Flushing Victorian charm, old features and rather comfortable seating, you could say that the scenery of the theatre is what sets it apart from everything else. Roundhouse London

M

y love for Professor Green (Stephen Maderson) has grown over the last four years so I decided I would finally see him in the flesh rather than just looking at the shrine on my wall. After the tour being postponed for 7 months due to Stephen getting married, arrested and run over, you could say people were more eager than ever before but finally it was time. Arriving in London was the first hurdle, but it was all so worth it. Throwing our things in a hotel we were off to stand in the blistering cold for an hour. Thursday 11 December 2014 at the Roundhouse Theatre, London. Seeing the official set list for the first time just made the whole thing seem surreal, I was beyond excited, in fact I was that excited I even spent £5 in the line on a ‘concert tag’ from one of those ‘lookie lookie’ men (WARNING) then found out I had to take it off as soon as I got in the building as it’s not ‘official merchandise’ (gutted). As soon as we walked into the

standing area the atmosphere was already amazing. People were cheering, dancing and singing. My favourite thing about concerts is that everyone is so nice and just wants to have a good time, which everyone did. We already made friends by the time we got in. After watching the support acts everyone was pumped and ready. The stage setting was perfect and I have to say I had a pretty good chance to get his sweat on me from where I was standing. His arrival on stage was so quick and overwhelming. Everyone cheered and just stood there, staring. I think I must

have had a true star-stuck moment. He was beautiful, just as beautiful as his voice. He performed amazingly and really got the crowed involved. He really did make his homecoming memorable by bringing surprise guests out such as Emilie Sande, Rizzle Kicks and Dream Mclean. Even though I fainted half way through (tragic) I still recommend anyone going to see him, if you would like a good night out, just make sure you drink lots of water! I think people underestimate concerts and how fun they actually are, everyone is there for good music and a fun time, who wouldn’t want that? I give it a top rating and would 100% be going to his next tour in 2015.

The year of many musical comebacks

2015

2015’s shaping up to be a year full of hungrily awaited album releases. From Charli XCX, Lana Del Rey, Mumford & Sons, Duran Duran and Drake, among many others. Here’s Tag’s top six mustlisten-to album releases.

Kanye West Rihanna Madonna Rita Ora Fleetwood Mac Britney Spears

Kanye West: The king of controversy, Kanye West is renowned for causing a stir with whatever he does and this is what makes him special. His eighth studio album titled ‘So Help Me God’ is due for release this year. It features the Paul McCartney collaboration ‘Only One’ and will also feature the track ‘All Day’. This album by the rap icon will be the first taste of music from Kanye since 2013’s album “Yeezus”.

Rihanna: Robyn Rihanna Fenty is

undoubtedly one of the biggest musicians to grace our generation and her millions of fans are eagerly awaiting the release of her upcoming eighth studio album, which is currently unnamed. Her latest release dubbed as R8, which stands for Rihanna 8, will be the first release from the Bajan superstar since November 2012’s ‘Unapologetic’. Rumours are circulating the internet as to when it will be released and who will be collaborating with her on the album. We at Tag magazine can’t wait to hear it.

Madonna: Madonna, the queen of

pop has been on the scene for over 30 years, more than half of her life. Each era of the star shows her range of talent and she has earlier this month released her 13th studio album ‘Rebel Heart’. Back in December of 2014, six of the tracks from this album were leaked to the web, which enticed the singer to officially release them along with the album cover which shows a fresh-faced Madonna channeling her 80s ‘Vogue’ era hairstyle. The world has been loving this album since its release.

Rita Ora: The Albanian-born singer

is one of the hottest stars that the UK has to offer. Her first album ‘Ora’ was released back in 2012 and reached the top of the charts. The singer, who was signed to Roc Nation by Jay Z himself, keeps teasing her fans with snippets of her new project, which at the moment is untitled. The album will feature her number one single ‘I Will Never Let You Down’.

Fleetwood Mac: The iconic BritishAmerican band that formed way back in 1967 treated 2014 as their comeback year. After announcing a new tour that broke records by selling out six shows at London’s O2 Arena and announcing headline festival slots, the band revealed they would be releasing their 18th studio album, their first since 2003. This album will prove whether the band still has what it takes to be part of the new music scene.

Britney Spears: Love her or hate

her – is a huge star. The American pop princess is known for her risqué videos, crazy behavior and addictive music. Her fans were pleased to know that 2015 would be the year that she would finally release her ninth album. The untitled studio album will undoubtedly be a hit with her fans worldwide.

PLAY IT AGAIN SAM

Everybody has watched a film that they really enjoyed and have been forever teased with the ongoing rumours of a sequel but they never seem to happen. Here’s the countdown for the Top 5 films you think should have had a sequel. The Incredibles (2004)

1

The number one film you wish had a sequel is the much loved children’s film about a family of superheroes trying to adapt to normal life. It has been circulated with rumours of a second film since the day of release. It would be great to see what the characters are getting up to now. Finding Nemo gets a sequel and so does Monsters Inc. why not the Incredibles?

Truman Show (1998)

2

My Personal favourite Jim Carrey film and I’m glad you agreed that you’d like to see a

sequel. The Truman Show was a unique idea about an insurance salesman/ adjuster who discovers his entire life is actually a TV show. Tag 2015 would love to see how he adapts to the real world as the celebrity of a hit show he never knew existed. I for one would like to see what happens with love interest Lauren on the outside world.

Inception (2010)

3

Coming in at third is the widely confusing Inception. Some people claim to have figured out the mystery of the ending, but I think it would be really great if the second movie picked up right where the first one left off, so we can see what happens (or doesn’t happen) next. The question remains, would Di Caprio be prepared to go behind the camera for another confusing installment?

Knocked Up (2007)

4

A much loved film about big kid and fun loving party animal Ben Stone, played by Seth Rogen who meets Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl) at a club whilst she celebrates her recent promotion to E News TV. A few drinks too many leads to a one-night stand, which leads to Alison falling pregnant. ‘This Is 40’ was a kind of sequel to Knocked Up, however it was widely based around Alison’s sister Debbie, and her husband Pete. I’m glad you agree you would like to see this sequel made and with takings of £1,583,998 in the opening weekend of the films release. It might give Seth Rogen something to think about?

Unbreakable (2000)

5

A film about a seemingly ordinary guy David Dunn (Bruce Willis). Not only is he the sole survivor of a horrific train crash that killed 131 people yet he doesn’t have a scratch on him. Elijah Price (Samuel L Jackson) is an obscure character that approaches Dunn with a seemingly far fetched theory behind it all. I personally enjoyed this film with all the poor films that have been associated with M. Night Shyamalan in the past couple of years a sequel to his pre-super hero flick might fix his stance in the eyes of the public?

TAG MAGAZINE 2015

VOICE OF A GENERATION: With the general election just around the corner, young people who could be voting for the first time must be thinking “Who do I choose?” Well we at Tag have searched through party policies to give you a head start and help you to make your decision a much easier process. We could talk forever about different policies, but we’ve narrowed it down to the two things that matter most to us – education and employment.

EDUCATION The Conservatives’ main plan is to protect the education budgets. They hope to restore discipline in schools and raise educational standards by investing more money into schools. EMPLOYMENT It’s all about small business! The Conservatives plan to create more jobs, 1.7 million in fact, by investing in small businesses, giving them more leeway to hire new people through ‘start up loans’. David Cameron will pledge to increase startup loans lending £300 million with an aim to support another 50,000 businesses if the Conservatives are re-elected in May. They also pledge to scrap income tax all together for everybody under 21.

What will this mean for you? There will be no more cuts to the education system and more money will be pumped into it, meaning more resources for you, books, computers etc. Schools will be stricter on behaviour and also grades, you will be expected to perform to the best of your ability. By the Conservatives backing small businesses, it means there are more job openings for young people like you. If say, your local café is receiving more money, that means they will be more open to hiring new staff, because they can afford it and if you are under 21 you wont have to pay income tax.

24

EDUCATION Apprenticeships, apprenticeships, and apprenticeships. That is the focal point of Labour’s education polices. They want to change the education system; this includes adding more vocational courses, meaning Labour want young people to learn more technical skills to be ready for the workplace. EMPLOYMENT Labour focus on fixing the UK’s current employment problem by getting more and more young people working. Labour plan to do this by training young people with more skills in order to progress in the workplace.

WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR YOU? If you feel you are more of a practical person you will be offered a more vocational route. Let’s face it, exams aren’t for everyone, therefore more apprenticeships will be made available. You will find yourself developing your technical skills as well as academic ones while on the job, giving you vital experience too. More jobs! You will be guaranteed a real, paid starter job. (between the ages of 18–24). If you have been unemployed for a year, Labour will find you a job, (don’t ask me how). 16–17-year-olds who are unemployed will have the chance to take part in a ‘Post 18 apprenticeship scheme’. Allowing you to earn money while learning and gaining vital experience needed in the workplace.

TAG’S GUIDE TO VOTING EDUCATION Due to the current coalition government, the Liberal Democrats have similar views to the Conservatives. However they do plan to make sure no cuts are made to education, this gives schools more money for up-to-date resources. The Lib Dems also plan to create more apprenticeships in order for young people to develop their technical skills whilst gaining vital experience.

EDUCATION UKIP will introduce an option for students to take an apprenticeship qualification instead of four non-core GCSEs. They will remove tuition fees for students taking approved degrees in science, medicine, technology, engineering and maths. Also, UKIP plan to scrap the target of 50% of school leavers going to university.

EDUCATION The Green Party education polices state: “Education should be at the heart of communities and for communities, and should promote equality, inclusivity, social and emotional well-being”. They also plan for all teachers to be employed through local authorities creating a safe environment whilst at school or college.

EMPLOYMENT Again, the Liberal Democrats’ polices are similar to the Conservatives. They also plan to invest money into small business, this is done through ‘start up loans’ helping small businesses get on their feet and employing more young people.

EMPLOYMENT UKIP’s policies are to give British people the upper hand when trying to get a job. For example UKIP employment polices state the following: “Businesses should be able to discriminate in favour of young British workers”. This is quite a controversial policy that many do not agree with.

EMPLOYMENT Safety first! Green party are all about rights this year. The Green party plan to ensure that checks exist ensuring that people are treated fairly and receive the benefits they are entitled too. They plan to ensure suitable legal protection for everyone; meaning employees are treated with respect.

WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR YOU? Much like the Conservative party, it means you will be able to gain more jobs through local business, like your local café for example. If you are not working you will have the opportunity to receive money doing an apprenticeship, therefore gaining vital experience needed in the workplace.

WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR YOU? If you’re British it means that if you apply for a job at your local supermarket, and you’re up against someone from the European union, the company would have to be more biased towards you. To make it simple if you’re young and you’re British, it could be easier to find a job. But is this right?

WHAT WILL THIS MEAN FOR YOU? It may seem like there’s not much in it for you but there really is. It means you will be paid the legal wage for your age. So many young people are underpaid and don’t even know it. Also checks will be in place to ensure that you are safe in the workplace. Also as well as GCSEs you will learn about social aspects, you will learn to treat people with respect and stand up for equality.

YOUTUBER

TAKEOVER Nowdays, if you say the name ‘Pewdiepie’ most teenagers will know who he is. He’s the King of YouTube and the number one most subscribed channel with a whopping 35 million subscribers! His real name is Felix Kjellberg and he’s from Sweden but he’s currently living down the road from us in Brighton. Pewdiepie is a YouTube gamer, that means he plays games and records himself! Now that might sound boring to some people but 35 million subscribers can’t be wrong H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! Yep, his funny wit and his over-reactions to everything are the reasons why he is number one and why we all love him, I mean, come on, who doesn’t love Pewds?! No doubt his YouTube success will continue to grow and he’ll be number one for a long time. “Pewds, just continue to do what you’re doing and you’ll keep on making people laugh *brofist*”. Of course, we can’t forget about the legendary YouTubers, Smosh. Smosh are a YouTube duo that consists of Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox and they’ve been making videos since YouTube started way back in 2005. I guess you could say they were the first real YouTubers.

SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE EXTENDED DIPLOMA CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

Over the past few years YouTubers have taken over the Internet. These days YouTubers seem to be more popular with teenagers than some celebrities. Maybe it’s because they’re funnier? Maybe it’s because they are our age? Either way, whatever they’re doing, they’re doing it right because they’ve managed to captivate an entire generation.

They have almost 20 million subscribers to their main channel, making them the second most subscribed YouTuber out there. Smosh’s main channel content is made up of funny little skits including their very well known ‘Food Battle’ videos. They have a few other successful channels. ‘Smosh 2nd Channel’ which they use for vlogging and has 4 million subscribers, they also have a gaming channel called ‘Smosh Games’ which has 5 million subscribers. Hopefully Smosh’s success will continue because they really deserve it; they’ve been around for so long and have paved the way for many another YouTubers. When you’re talking about YouTubers you have to mention The queen of YouTube, Jenna Marbles. She is the third most subscribed YouTuber with 14 million subscribers. Her channel content is mostly vlogs, rants and just plenty of hilarity. Her ‘I don’t care’ attitude and crude

humour is the reason why she is so popular. Her real name is Jenna N. Mourey and she first started YouTubing in 2009 and since then she has climbed her way up into the top 10 and now sits firmly in 3rd place. I think that Jenna will certainly stay within the top 5 for a long time; she’s too funny not to be one of the best.

GET YOUR Laughter plays an essential role in all of our lives whether we are laughing at witty banter from someone in the crew, or from a funny gag on the TV. We all find laughter in different places but all for one reason, to make us feel good. And what better way to feel good and laugh than by watching some of the country’s most loved comedians. There are so many to choose from that we are really spoiled for choice. Whether you like stand-up comedy, comedy TV shows or any other format of comedy, there is sure to be something that tickles your fancy. So maybe you’re wondering with so many comics to choose from, where do I start? Who do I watch? Well this article is here to help you choose.

28

Russell Howard We start with TAG 15’s favourite comedian, and the highest rated in our survey, Russell Howard. Well known for his BBC show, Russell Howard’s Good News, now in its 9th series, where he takes the latest news stories and gives us his own hilarious twist on it. He’s also produced a variety of stand up DVDs and gigs, as well as appearing on popular panel shows such as Mock The Week. His style of comedy is a very loud and over-the-top kind, where he uses big gestures and a variety of interesting sounds that I wasn’t aware humans could make, but this just adds to the comedy and makes everything he says even funnier, not that it needs to be. He’s hilarious.

Katherine Ryan The second comic we would suggest is Katherine Ryan. Another guest who has featured on panel shows such as Mock The Week, and Never Mind the Buzzcocks, because of her knack for taking hits at other celebrities and whose gigs are more than often completely sold out. Her style is very quick witted with her comedy and often plays upon her personal life. She will flip a negative experience into something hilarious and by doing this, she has managed to set her place as one of Tag’s favourite comedians.

FUNNY ON Michael McIntyre And last but not least, Michael McIntyre, who I have been lucky enough to see live on one of his testing tours. This is where he would try out new material for his next DVD, and I can happily report that it was brilliant. His over-positive personality mixed in with his flamboyant gestures and acting style makes for a fantastic act, one that left me gasping for air from laughing. The Independent and ‘Comedy Gold’ by The Guardian have called him the ‘Coldplay of comedy’. He manages to relate to all audiences and makes any situation funny and is a definite recommendation for all comedy fans.

HEALTHY EATING Have you had your five a day? Are you aware of the effects that bad eating can cause? Here are some top tips to keep fit and healthy and to get you that ‘summer bod’ you’ve been longing for. Did you know... That 2 glasses of wine is the equivalent of a burger, which would take you 33 minutes to burn off. 2 pints of beer woud be equivalent to a burger-and-a-half, and would take 44 minutes to burn off.

“Exercise is a key component to maintaining fitness and reducing the risk of many diseases and illnesses. I would say doing some form of exercise that gets the heart rate up at least twice a week is enough. Of course a balanced diet and staying hydrated play a role in healthy living” Have you always had such a healthy outlook? “I have always walked everywhere from a young age and tried to maintain running, I feel I have become much healthier since training”.

Limit junk food Although it can taste good, junk food is full of oils, sugars and saturated fats. This can be okay in small quantites, but too much can cause heart disease, obesity and tooth decay.

Should we

worRy

about

EBOLA

With recent UK cases arising, the country seems to once again be on red alert for the deadly Ebola virus. Is it worth getting worried about the disease, or should we just ignore it? Ebola is only now showing itself in the western world for the first time. It’s a disease that has been recognised since 1976, when the first few cases spread in Sudan and Zaire. One of the main reasons Ebola outbreaks are usually so severe and cause so many casualties is because it can quickly move from remote villages to unprepared urban environments. So it’s able to quickly spread in close quarters. With no known vaccine it has the potential to devastate communities. While the fact that it spreads in urban environments may panic you, cities even bigger then New York or London have managed to deal with Ebola. A citizen of Lagos in Nigeria last summer went against general advice and sought medical attention in the hospital for Ebola. Doctors believed he only had malaria and eight people died because of the 32

small outbreak. It was a disaster situation in which Lagos officials managed to prevent a major outbreak through careful monitoring and ‘contact tracing’. While eight people did die due to the outbreak, it could have (without the bravery of doctors) been much worse. One of the big concerns for students could be for those who are planning on going travelling this year. With Africa usually being a popular destination for young people looking to volunteer, we would certainly recommend that you research your trip before you commit to anything. For alternative ‘gap year’ destinations check out Page 7 for our top picks. Considering many of our readers are primarily based in the South East, the chances of coming into contact with Ebola are slim. However, you may have seen the report involving an individual who was tested for the disease at Eastbourne District General Hospital, this was due to their history of travel in West Africa. It has since been confirmed in a much less publicised article that the patient’s test returned negative. It also reiterated the fact that ‘The risk of Ebola to the general public in the UK remains very low.’ For more information about the Ebola virus check out: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/

‘Footie’ phrases for uncoached cats

I

n today’s modern fast paced world, full of assignments to complete and working at the weekends, no one really has time to watch a load of football, bar footballers themselves. Alas that doesn’t stop social media and the fans going on about it non-stop and no one wants to hang out with the person who isn’t in the know! So we here at Tag Mag felt it important, (even pivotal) to make sure we keep the readers in the loop, so here’s a guide to some of footballs most vague terms and what they mean.

‘He shoulda just hoofed it’ While from the clips you may see of Vine, football is very rarely about slick skills and long range goals, and much more about defenders making mistakes. Many teams may now try and play fancy passing football which fans cry out for, but that doesn’t mean your 6’8 German defender should be trying to do skills at the back! These are the players who should be smashing the ball up into row Z! You’ll often hear of fans screaming from the terraces in fits of rage due to a defender’s complacency that ‘He shoulda just hoofed it’ and by that, this eloquent phrase of course means that ‘he should have struck the ball with such aggression that it goes away from his goal completely’. Simple stuff.

#Tiki Taka As mentioned before, since the turn of the century, gone are the days of tough tackling and the long ball game (kicking it miles with no real end game in sight). Now fans demand much slower build up play. Many clubs try this, and fail Written by Jack Stevens, designed by Fred Osborne

The bluffer’s guide to staying afloat in social situations of soccer.

to make it exciting at all, but when a team does it right, it’s beautiful to watch. It’s known as ‘Tiki Taka’ football. For example ‘One of the points where Moyesy really let us down was his lack of Tiki Taka footie’. In this ‘tech’ world young people are more likely to express all their opinions online in short ways that don’t require any physical activity or maybe because it’s anonymous? With social media being an absolute blast during football, fill up your timelines with hashtag this and hashtag that, show your support and chuck in a short hashtag of your own. One of the easiest and most popular ones in the simple #COYB or #COYR. This of course stands for ‘Come on you Reds/Blues’. Yes, you could give your team that boost they need with a cheeky hashtag. But remember, with social media so prevalent you could be using it to discuss relevant news, bringing about social change or supporting a local charity.

TAG MAGAZINE 2015

Testicular cancer usually affects younger men from the ages of 15 to 49. When put like that, that makes for some scary reading! But this is far from the case, especially if you are checking yourself regularly and properly. Statistics from Cancer Research UK suggest that 2,300 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer every year. As a 15-year-old male, you are probably wondering if you are checking yourself correctly? We are going to give you a step-by-step guide to checking those testicles.

Step 1

So, you’ve just dried off from showering and are now planning to check those testicles. You should check after a bath or shower because the skin around your scrotum would be relaxed. Now were getting into the nitty and gritty, you should hold your penis out the way and check one testicle at a time.

Step 3 Step 2 Hold one of your testicles between your thumb and fingers. You should use both hands for each testicle. With one of your testicles in your hand, you should roll it gently between your Index finger and thumb.

But remember... ...it is perfectly normal for one testicle to be slightly larger, and for one to drop lower than the other. Well unless you haven’t hit puberty! You should also know that each testicle has a small, coiled tube, which could resemble a lump or bump. These can be found on the outer or middle outer side of the testicle. Testicles also have blood vessels and supporting tissues. But if you have any concerns you should definitely go to your doctor for a second opinion.

For more information on performing self-examinations of your testicles, follow the instructions on the Kid’s Health webpage at:

LOOK AFTER http://kidshealth.org/teen/sexual_health/guys/tse.html

34

Unsure of what you should be feeling for? If this is the case, you need to look and feel for any hard lumps or smooth rounded bumps. Also check for any change in size, shape or consistency of each testicle.

By the time you are 29, not as far away as you’d like to think, the estimated risk of developing breast cancer is 1 in 2,000. From a young age the risk is minimal, but still present. Around 55,000 people a year are diagnosed with breast cancer, this meaning the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is 1 in 8 women. Don’t take a chance; check yourself using these 5 steps.

Step 1

Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror, shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. You should look for two main things; the first being that your breasts are their usual shape, size and colour, the second being that your breasts are evenly shaped without visible swelling or distortion.

Step 3

A life in your control. The Sims franchise has taken the world by storm for the last 14 years, creating an ever growing gaming world, and this new addition to the hit simulation series doesn’t fail to wow. Since its release on 5 September 2014, fans of the series have been wondering if getting the new title is worth the price. At a steep £49.99 for the limited edition PC system of The Sims 4, it is no surprise that many fans are questioning it’s worth. The Sims community of fans is up in arms after the disappearance of toddlers and schools in EA’s latest iteration, The Sims 4. Is this just beginning of the differences between the newest addition, compared with the third version of the game? With heightened graphics and more advanced gameplay capabilities there is a clear

36

advantage to playing The Sims 4, however, there’s downsides of lagging load time and a lack of exploring to be done outside your Sims home. Many players feel this is a major disappointment, with Simmer enthusiast describing it as being a ‘huge frustration, you’re paying for a game that has better graphics yet smaller game play elements’. Adding ‘it’s pointless’. Similar to its predecessors, players create a Sim character and explore different personalities which of course, change the way the game plays out, however, the game’s developers have introduced some pretty interesting new

elements to The Sims 4. There is a new realm of emotional variance within the Sims characters as you the player, now have the chance to enhance your character’s interactions with its friends or family members. For example, based on the personality traits that you set when you design your Sim, your character will have different interaction options compared to other Sims. This allows you to have a lot more flexibility and complexity in your interactions with other Sims, going beyond a basic social life and adding a more humanising depth, along with a whole new range of objects and clothing as usual. Plus, your Sim now has the chance to live in a house that can be manipulated in every single which way, and even when fully designed can be picked up at the drop of a hat and placed wherever you feel suitable. Build controls for homes are much more intuitive, helping you build homes faster without sacrificing the intricacies that the game has developed over time within previous instalments, much like The Sims 3.

...heightened graphics and more advanced gameplay...

Of course, as stated before, loading time is an issue, emphasised more by the fact that the game loads dependent on the player’s computer, however, the requirement of internet connection during the initial installation process for game activation is proving more of an issue with the fan base. The new addition to the Sims franchise has its up and downs, ultimately making it up to you if it’s worth its money, but if you are more interested in having toddlers and a faster loading time, maybe stick with Sims 3 but if you have the patience of an owl, this sequel definitely offers a depth of interaction with your miniature you’s that we have never seen before.

Apprenticeships Getting a job is not the only option. Apprenticeships are a good way to get the experience required for a specific career. You can get an apprenticeship for many different things from engineering to hairdressing. The advantage of this is that you get paid while you’re learning.

Y

oung people are perceived to have little-to-no experience, and employers are more likely to choose people with experience. According to the Health and Safety Executive, there are many things employers have to consider when employing young people. They have to follow a guideline that covers many things such as if you are able to handle yourself both physically and mentally, or if you are at risk of harmful exposure to substances. Your age may not be the crucial factor in why you may not be getting the job. The fact that there aren’t many jobs that young people can do causes competition. This is the problem us young people face when job searching. A tip if you are looking for a job is having a good portfolio. This is the key, you need to be ambitious, everything you have done is a bonus and makes you the person you are. There is no one like you – show it! Employers like to see something different, they like colourful portfolios filled with interesting things that you have already achieved. Be wary of your social media profiles. Potential employers could search for you online; inappropriate pictures or comments will affect your employability. 38

Try to look for volunteer work, this shows your employer that you are willing to look for experience even if you do not get paid for it.

Everything you choose to include in your CV should tell a story, either with words or images to make it interesting to read or look at.

When writing about yourself, include examples of the problems you have faced and how you solved them as this shows that you can keep calm and work under pressure. Don’t put too much information in your portfolio as it could put off the employer from reading what you have to say, it will simply be too long.

Don’t forget to update your portfolio. Only include recent information, no older than three years.

Survey results show that most young people have had work experience but most of them found it difficult to obtain. Combining work with studies can be challenging but remember, it builds up experience and in the long run, it will pay off. Use the

UNSOCIAL NETWORKING

A

re smartphones really affecting us? Are they causing more problems than helping? We are constantly told by experts that smartphones are changing the way we work, play and manage our money. Yes, they enable us to search the web, play games and communicate in ways no one thought was possible, but are they driving this generation into a world of real-life social inability and social isolation? It must be said, smartphones have changed our lives. Be honest, you’re sitting there reading this article, probably thinking about what selfie you’ll next post on Instagram or what you’ll write as your next Facebook status, we’re all addicted in one way or another. They enable us to communicate in ways no one expected 20 years ago; it’s now super quick and easy, even your four-year-old cousin can do it. iMessage, Facebook Messenger, Twitter or Instagram suit the lazy lives of teenagers well. We no longer have to get up and walk to the door of our best friend, just to ask if they did the maths homework. Are they becoming more of a distraction to our lives than a once thought useful tool? Tag ’15 conducted a survey asking a range of ages, about their

40

opinions and views on the use of smartphones. From this survey, we found that 100% of participants found that smartphones have a direct effect on their lives, commonly linked with socialising and communication. Young people note that this could have a knock-on effect with their ability in how they face problems with confidence and face-to-face conversations with someone other than a peer. It is certainly worrying how people can interact with others, without even leaving the confines of their bedroom; sometimes unsure of whom they are actually talking to! Not only is this a distraction from everyday life, it can put you in a vulnerable position without you even knowing. Do you really know who you’re talking to? There is always the possibility that the cute 17-year-old boy you’ve been messaging is someone else altogether. Everyone’s the same, myself included, we’re hooked to updating our status,

Overcome Depression SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE EXTENDED DIPLOMA CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

e’ve all been told our teenage years can be tough, so yes it’s perfectly normal to feel sad or irritable every now and then. But if these feelings don’t go away or become so intense that you can’t deal with them, you may be suffering from a mood disorder known as depression. Heard of it? Well the good news is that you don’t have to suffer in silence. Help is available and you have more power than you think.

It is important to note that these symptoms can also be linked with other types of mood disorders such as postnatal depression, bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). If you find that you are struggling to cope with depression, Mind.org advises that it is wise to seek help from your GP if you have experienced any of these symptoms for longer than a couple of days.

‘What is it exactly?’

Depression comes in many forms, ranging from mild depressive thoughts to major depressive episodes. While not everyone’s experience is the same, commonly the world feels, looks and is understood in a completely different way than before. With no specific causes depression can strike anyone at any time. Emotions don’t just affect your mind, they can also affect your body; this leads us on to the symptoms felt from depression.

‘Treatment?’

It may seem hard, like you are misunderstood and no one can relate to how you feel, but there are millions of people that struggle with the same thoughts and emotions as you. Official statistics taken from Youngminds. org indicate that around 1 in 25 children aged between 5 and 16 have emotional disorders, such as depression and anxiety. So why not take the time to get help. If you’ve been feeling low for more than just a few days, you can take NHS’s short online test to find out if you’re depressed.

‘Don’t let your mind get the better of you, if you’re struggling, don’t be scared, speak up’

‘Symptoms?’

Different people can have different physical symptoms when depressed, some may overeat or have no appetite at all. Some may have trouble sleeping while others sleep too much. Some people may even have headaches or other aches and pains, fatigue or difficulty when concentrating. Emotional symptoms are also common, ranging from feeling sad, guilty, not enjoying things of normal interest and even suicidal thoughts. These symptoms can often go un-noticed or be seen as not of importance to most people, but they really are.

TAG MAGAZINE 2015

Passing your driving test could potentially be one of the most useful achievements of your life. Being able to drive will give you more opportunities in life, such as driving across the country to visit someone or maybe your dream job requires a licence. Either way, you will feel proud you are able to drive, plus it’s a key aspect of becoming an adult. Once that provisional comes through the post, you’re ready to start taking lessons. Your instructor will probably advise you not to rush and we advise the same because there’s nothing worse than rushing through your lessons and taking your test too early. Spending £62 for a test and failing because you rushed the process can crush your confidence. You will need to rebuild this confidence and who knows how long this can take? When you feel confident enough to take your driving test, you should feel some nerves. These nerves are healthy, but you should remain calm and eliminate any negative thoughts from your mind. There are many different things you can do to help with this. Make sure you have plenty of sleep the night before; it has been scientifically proven that the more sleep you have, the quicker your reactions will be. You should also make sure that you eat well before your test; you wouldn’t want to be distracted by a rumbling stomach. Websites such as HelpGuide.org are good for advice on tips for eating and sleeping well. However, driving does come with a few problems and we won’t shield you from the truth.

After saving for your first car, you now have to get the insurance...

Before taking your test, you must go through hours of lessons, which eats away at some spare time, plus the cost of your driving lessons might start to drain your wallet. This brings us to the money issues surrounding your first year as fully licensed driver – car insurance. Over the years, car insurance has become a recurring problem for younger drivers. According to Confused.com the average price for an 18-year-old to cover their vehicle for a year has increased by £85, bringing it up to £1,965.

“A Black Box can make things a lot cheaper”

42

New figures suggest that nearly 12% of people harmed in a car accident, are between the ages of 17–19 years old. That’s nearly one in five accidents involving this particular age group, despite the fact that

Written by Elisha Walter and Joshua Hartley, designed by Joshua Hartley

teenagers make up 1.5% of total licensed drivers. This could affect the way insurance companies pass judgment on teenage drivers. The more likely teenagers are to crash their vehicle, the more expensive the insurance is going to be. This could possibly put teenagers off learning and buying a car. In a recent survey conducted by a Sussex Downs College student, it was revealed that 60% of teenagers are put off driving because of the cost of insurance. However, 40% of them said that this did not affect their decisions to learn. Most insurance quotes give drivers the opportunity to have ‘telematics’ insurance, which will allow them to install a ‘black box’ in the vehicle. This policy will give the company access to the way that the driver controls their vehicle. It can check the speed, acceleration, braking and mileage of the vehicle. This policy is much cheaper than the normal policies but if the driver doesn’t meet the agreements set, they could be charged extra. However, this was

5 Cars For Less Than £1000 Volkswagen Polo Nissan Micra K11 Renault Clio Citroen Saxo Vauxhall Corsa not overly popular with the public. 60% of people saying they wouldn’t consider having the black box installed. We have recently looked at car insurance for an 18–19 year old. The insurance would cover the driver for 1 year and the cover is for a Volkswagen Polo, which is 16 years old. The results showed us that we’d be looking at an average insurance price of around £2,000. This an extreme amount of money to pay out for one year, and would become even harder to afford if you didn’t have a job. Comparison websites such as Compare The Market, MoneySupermarket and GoCompare give you a range of insurance prices from different insurance providers, this is a great way of quickly finding insurance. These websites are helpful but do not always

supply you with the cheapest quotes. You may be able to find much cheaper insurance for your car, but you will have to dig. You might need to invest some time and shop around for the policy that best suits you.

As the figures grow and insurance becomes more expensive, more teenagers aren’t able to find insurance policies that are affordable. Some way down the line, we might be seeing fewer teenagers on the road.

TAG MAGAZINE 2015

TAG magazine is 20 years old this year, which for the majority of us, will seem like a long time, and for some of us, will be longer than we have been alive! So what has changed over the last twenty years? Well that’s what this article is all about; we will be looking at how our world has changed and what new and exciting things have happened in this timeframe.

Something that has taken over our very existence are mobile phones and mobile devices. Nowadays people can’t imagine their lives without their mobiles or tablets, with all the apps, on-demand internet access and built-in HD cameras, but 20 years ago phones didn’t have cameras or apps and the only game they had was Snake, which for those who do not know, was a game where a line chases a dot. How did people live without Instagram and selfies? People can’t imagine life without their gadgets, and in the 2009 issue of Tag magazine, we were just hearing news about the release of the iPod Touch, and now we have the IPhone 6, the iPad Air, and even the iPad mini. All that in just six years! Who knows where we will be in another six.

44

The second item in our list is movies. In the last twenty years we have moved from VHS videos, to DVDs, to Blu Ray and now to online streaming. Websites like Blinkbox and Netflix are now paving the way for the whole streaming world and are becoming increasingly popular – some shows are now Netflix exclusive. Soon it seems, we may not even have DVDs around anymore. Not only has this changed the way we watch movies but it has enabled us to have access to a much broader range of genres. 20 years ago teenagers had to put up with what was on at the cinema or what films they had in a home collection. We are certainly spoilt for choice in 2015.

SUSSEX DOWNS COLLEGE EXTENDED DIPLOMA CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION

When I was younger my social media was MSN, which was something all young adults will remember with its huge range of emoticons and the forever-annoying nudge feature. Not long after that we had Bebo, which was all about sharing the love!

Now however we’ve got Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so many more. In the 2008 Tag magazine, MySpace was all the rage, but I bet if you ask people now, most people wont be able to tell you what MySpace is let alone use it. It’s safe to say we are spoilt for choice when it comes to ways of communicating with one another digitally but is it having an impact on teenagers’ ability to communicate in person?

Finally our last item on our list is games consoles. The most recent consoles being the Xbox One, PS4 and the Wii U, with their Full HD realistic graphics and incredible gameplay, as well as the news of Virtual Reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift becoming available to the public in the near future. It is hard to believe that these consoles are the eighth generation of consoles to be released. Around twenty years ago we were in the fifth generation, which included consoles like the first Playstation and the Gameboy Colour.

Look at the difference between these two games! The one on the left is the first Super Mario game and on the right is the newest installation in Super Smash Bros series.

So these were just some of the things that have changed in the last 20 years, and if this says anything, it’s that the next twenty are sure to be filled with just as many changes; and what we know as new and exciting today, will be old news by then. But hopefully one thing that will remain is Tag, here’s to another 20 years! Written and designed by Sam Deadman

“Miniature wargaming can open up exciting new opportunities such as painting or building competitions, fielding tournaments and meeting new people”

Most people prefer video games and television to painting models and rolling dice. I’m here to tell you why those people are missing out. The hobby itself has a few different avenues that you can venture down. There’s the building side of the hobby where you can put some models together, and if you want you can mix models up and change bits from different kits. This is called converting and many hobbyists enjoy nothing more than sitting down at their paint stations and selecting parts to put together in their latest masterpiece. The next side to this hobby is the fielding of your miniatures. This involves having a battle table and some other assorted items such as dice and tape measures. There are whole rulebooks written to give you an entire universe to battle and wage war in. You can go down to any local hobby store and book a table at no expense and field an army of Ork hordes or weird alien races against one another. The

last side to the hobby is painting which is the most varied and unique part. Once you have your model together, you get to paint it however you like to make them look sinister or heroic! You want to know the best part? No matter how many times you see a way to paint a model someone will always have a new and exciting way of doing it. There is much to learn about painting and making your models look awesome but there is nothing more satisfying than finally completing your new model and revelling in your own glory. Now lets talk about how to get into the hobby and don’t fret for you shall not have to go around and spend lots of money on books and miniatures off the bat. Heck you can just go down to your local hobby shop and watch people use paint stations and playing tables to gain a feel for the hobby. I absolutely recommend this as the atmosphere in the shop is always friendly and inviting.

Miniature wargaming can open up exciting new opportunities such as painting or building competitions, fielding tournaments and the ability to meet new and exciting people who are into the same hobby that you are. If you are one of the many who have caught hobby fever then I hope to see you soon on the fields of battle! FOR THE EMPEROR!!!
