The historic and picturesque town of Hastings is a mix of Victorian elegance and modern transformation, with vibrant and thriving business, tourism, leisure and education sectors. Hastings’ identity and reputation as a thriving national and international arts centre is gathering momentum. Hastings is sometimes referred to as Brighton’s little sister, and shares a lot of the same quirky, artistic qualities as its neighbour. But Hastings is beginning to move out of the shadows and make a real name for itself. ... And we much prefer the more recent reference of Shoreditch-on-Sea, because Hastings shares many of the same characteristics that the swanky London suburb is synonymous with. Many of the national news outlets have also been backing Hastings as a very attractive place to live, work, study and play (and of course, we agree!). The Guardian says that the town is undergoing an artistic renaissance and creative talents and businesses are flourishing alongside other like-minded people and the fun spirit of the town. Many high profile creative people are starting to make the move from Brighton and London.

In August 2016, Hastings was named as a hotspot for thriving creative industries. It was identified among 47 creative clusters across the UK that showed that Hastings was starting to have a significant impact on the industry.

DENT Student life isn’t just about studying. It’s about making friends, gaining life skills, and exploring. Hastings is a fantastically unique, independent and bohemian town to explore and spend your free time in.

Hastings Town Centre, as it is today, is a modern pedestrian shopping centre, filled with high street brands, coffee shops, and snack shacks.

We could tell you all about the high street shops where you can spend your student discount, but that’s the same in most towns and cities. What we’re dying to tell you about is the Old Town. Wandering through the quirky streets of the old town or ‘twittens’ as they’re known, you’ll get a real feel for the true spirit and eccentric vibe that this ancient town has.

There is a whole range of vintage and quirky boutique shops and restaurants to grab your attention; many of which have featured in national press and style magazines. If you’re looking for vintage, then you’ll be sure to find it in The Butlers Emporium. Hooks hang from the wooden clad walls displaying all sorts of memorabilia and treasures, fit for decorating your new surroundings with. You’ll be able to create your own unique style and find ‘one-off’ items in clothing and textile specialists, Warp and Weft Styling. Where else would you be able to order a Thai green curry in a bookshop, and enjoy a Lamb Tagine while sat amongst handbags and accessories?

Trip Advisor can give you an idea of the best places to eat and drink, but nobody really knows Hastings like we do. Here are some of our favourites:

The Crown is a very popular pub and highly recommended for its range of craft beers.

Cafe Maroc is a BYOB Moroccan restaurant serving traditional Moroccan feasts.

The Dragon Bar is a swanky London cocktail bar, where its resident DJ plays tracks straight from vinyl on his mini decks.

Ye Olde Pump House is in the heart of the old town and has a stunning interior full of character and is a great place to grab a drink or eat. You’ll find some of the best fish and chips at The Cod Father, The Old Town Fryer and the Kingfisher.

Porter’s Wine Bar is situated in a Grade 2 listed building and regularly has performances from award-winning jazz singer, Liane Carroll. The Boulevard Bookshop is a bookshop by day and Thai restaurant by night, offering a fine range of home-cooked Thai dishes.

The Printworks has two bars and is a great place to try something different from small breweries, vineyards and craft beers. This is a great night out. Walkers wine bar and bistro is a great place for lunch, as well as dancing the night away.

The town has three cinemas, a large shopping centre, Old Town, park, arcades and amusements, a Go-Kart track and the UK’s largest adventure golf complex. To the east, you’ll find a glorious stretch of beach, with Europe’s largest beachlaunched fishing fleet, the iconic black fishing huts, with views of the East Hill in the background. The Jerwood Gallery has very much made itself at home in this part of town since opening in 2011 and offers a ‘uniquely British experience’. Heading west, you’ll find the famous Hastings Pier. After being burnt down in 2010, the pier re-opened six years later. It acknowledges the history and charm of the old one by using some of the old planks in the restoration. It now offers a clean, modern, spacious area for people to

explore. Since re-opening, the pier has been a hive of activity with open-air yoga, cinema screenings, a circus and live music. The pier was once a popular venue for live music. The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Who and Jimi Hendrix all played here in their heyday. It looks as if the pier will once again become a hot spot for live performances after Dizzee Rascal, Madness, the Levellers, and DJ sensations MK and Hannah Wants all played sold out sets. Throughout the year, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard not to get carried away with all the parties and festivals going on in the town. The Seafood and Wine Festival, Jack in the Green, Pirates Day, and its very own version of Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday are some of the best!

Hastings is only a small university town compared to many others, so doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have blocks of student accommodation. Independent Living The cost of living in Hastings is quite low. There are lots of local accommodation options available through letting agencies, private landlords, you could even stay with host families. However we’ve teamed up with the town’s most exciting property developers to offer you a range of clean, stylish, New York style living spaces in the heart of Hastings, Lets2Share.

Lets 2 Share Lets2Share is an innovative accommodation provider, who’s passion is to create sustainable and affordable urban regeneration for students, young people and working professionals. All of their properties are regulated by industry organisations, and are somewhere we know you’ll love to live. The shared and flexible accommodation ranges from three to eight bedroom buildings that are fully furnished with a double bed,

STELL URTON

My three years have been amazing! During my second year I won the Student Open Category and the overall Best in Show at the international design competition, Pewter Live. To have been recognised

at this level as a student is a real honour. My sculptural vessels demonstrated an evolution of a functional form and were the result of six months design and testing to combine pewter and glass.

Persistence finally paid off and allowed me to develop a technique which has never been achieved before. My third year has been filled with work experience for a Silversmith in Ashford

and preparing for my final project. I’m so excited to have been offered a place at the prestigious Royal College of Art next year, to study a Master’s in Jewellery and Metal - I can’t wait to start! | 23

BA (HONS) ANIMATION ART AND PRACTICE VALIDATED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON

ABOUT THIS COURSE: Our BA (Hons) Animation Art and Practice will give you a solid understanding of the subject and a range of practical experience for you to start your career. You will focus on animation and learn transferable skills, technical know-how, and a solid understanding of a range of practical animation skills that will be the basis for your career in animation. You will begin by learning the principles of traditional hand drawn animation, stop-motion animation, and CGI, and then progress onto “live” projects for clients.

AREAS OF STUDY: Throughout the course you will explore and learn a range of diverse practical skills and theoretical studies to underpin your animation. You will be taught through a range of study styles including demonstrations, lectures, practical workshops and

professional projects that will give you the opportunity to transfer your animation abilities. All aspects of animation including character and f/x will be touched upon as well as cutout, stop-frame, hand drawn, 2D software, visual effects and CGI 3D animation software. In the second year you will be engaged upon professional projects for real clients as well as working on your own self-initiated projects. You will be building a show-reel and portfolio which will equip you for industry or postgraduate studies. In the final year you will undertake an extended essay and a final project that will be the culmination of your learning and that will be screened at the final show.

EMPLOYMENT & PROGRESSION: You will be working with industry experienced professionals to gain the necessary skills that will equip you for employment in the creative industries. Alternatively, you may also consider progressing onto

an MA course to further your knowledge and skills. Your very own show-reel and portfolio will help you gain entry to the course.

ABOUT THIS COURSE: Our BA (Hons) Designer Maker course has a strong emphasis on design practice alongside making and provides you with a skill base to establish yourselves as a practitioner. You will gain an understanding of how objects are made including materiality and function. The course is taught by creative professionals who are active designer makers and exhibitors. Throughout, students are guided and supported by group debate, individual tutorial and specialist seminars, allowing development of specialist areas of interest.

AREAS OF STUDY: Throughout the course you will explore a range of mediums including glass, ceramics, textiles and metal. Interdisciplinary practice links the specialisms to allow

you to explore printing processes, drawing and mould making.

ABOUT THIS COURSE: Our BA (Hons) Visual Communication Illustration programme will equip you with the creative skills to communicate a range of narratives and messages. You will learn the theories behind reducing hair growth, learn more about dermatology and microbiology, and understand the physiology of ageing. You will be able learn the advanced techniques of skin rejuvenation and hair removal through intense laser and light treatments in our specialist laser room. You will also expand your knowledge and skill set in advanced microdermabrasion and product chemistry.

AREAS OF STUDY: You will study advanced techniques in microdermabrasion, including spiralling and cross hatching to help remove the effects of scarring and stretch marks. You will learn how to identify those clients who are suitable for IPL / laser treatments, and have the opportunity to carry out these treatments in our IPL laser room. Our commercial salons will give you the opportunity to learn from experience and help you to complete one of your assessments, as you will need to complete four case studies on clients. Learning will also happen outside of the salon in our science labs where you learn more about dermatology and microbiology. You will be required to grow your own bacteria to understand the principles of health and hygiene within the salon. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also learn the science behind hair, skin and nail disorders, what causes them and how to treat them. You will also study the chemistry of hair and beauty products and produce your own products.

ABOUT THIS COURSE: Our teaching courses will provide you with a formal teaching qualification that will allow you to start your career as a teacher in the further education sector and in post compulsory education (age 14 plus). The PGCE qualification can be studied on a full-time and part-time basis, while our Cert Ed qualification is studied on a part-time basis. The practical elements play a big part in your learning during these courses, therefore we recommend that you are able to complete a minimum of 50-100 hours teaching per year. This can be through employment or on a voluntary basis. You will develop the ability to adapt to different learning, assessment, and teaching contexts to support your future studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs. You will become adept at collaborating with others and be able to share your own knowledge with confidence and resilience. You will also be able to critically reflect and be motivated to improve your own practice. By the end of the course you will be prepare for realities of teaching, be able to develop innovative skills, and be creative.

AREAS OF STUDY: During the course you will study six modules, three modules per year for part| 60

time study, reflecting on the generic post-compulsory teaching and learning issues. These issues are current and relevant to the further education and training sector and will be key areas from the new teaching standards.

For example many of our past students are now in employment across the world! They have successfully gained teaching jobs within East Sussex College, in colleges and universities in Kent and London, and two trainees are teaching English in China and Vietnam.

The course meets the Professional Standards for Teachers & Trainers in Education and training.

Some trainees on our part-time courses were all in employment while studying with us, but since graduating have moved into management positions within their places of work.

The full-time PGCE pathway will be perfect for you if you are already working as a trainee teacher, but you will need to provide us with acceptable forms of ID so we can help you to apply for a valid DBS. Due to the nature of the course, you need to allow at least another full day for reading and studying. Delivery of the full-time PGCE: During the first 4 weeks you will be required to attend Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9am - 5pm for induction and observation of teaching in a variety of areas. You will then be required to attend lectures every Tuesday with a further two days for placement. Delivery of the part-time PGCE and CertED: Lectures will take place every Thursday from 4pm - 8:30pm in both the first and second year.

EMPLOYMENT & PROGRESSION: There are plenty of opportunities for you as a Newly Qualified Teachers once you have completed the course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: To apply for our PGCE course (both part-time and full-time) you will need to have an honours degree. To apply for our CertEd course you will need to have an equivalent of a Level 3 qualification in your subject field, for instance - Level 3 Beauty Therapy qualification to go into teaching Beauty Therapy. You will also need GCSE maths & English language at a minimum of grade 4 / grade C For non-native speakers an IELTS 7.0 in all elements. You will also have to provide an up to date DBS from your place of work.
