What are Taster Days and how do they work? The next few years will be an exciting time as you explore all the choices available to you. Our Year 10 Taster Days will help you make an informed decision about your next steps after Year 11. On the day you will have the opportunity to sample real lessons, speak to teachers and students,and explore the campus. They are a fantastic opportunity for you to see what College life is all about.

CHOOSING YOUR SUBJECTS? Take a look through this programme at the Taster Sessions on offer. When completing your application form select five different taster sessions, ranked from your first to fifth choice. On the day your timetable will be made up of four 55 minute sessions. Please note some of our vocational courses run over two sessions, these are labelled ‘double’ on the course information.

PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY Each day we will be registering students from a number of local schools, alongside home schooled and out of area learners. On arrival staff will guide you to our registration desks to sign in and collect your personal timetable. Throughout the day staff and students will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and also help you to navigate your way around. Feel free to bring snacks and a drink with you, or some money to purchase refreshments during break times.

DOUBLE SESSION

Join the art & design team for a double session of creative workshops. Start by drawing with light - working with images of transparent and translucent objects via the power of overhead projectors. Learn skills in graphic design and illustration using Photoshop and finish the session with silk screen printing onto tote bags. What can I study?

BUSINESS, ACCOUNTING & LAW Accounting We all have to make decisions about what to do with our time, our money and other resources. We need to make the most of what we have to THRIVE, not just survive! The UK as a country has important decisions to make, including what type of Brexit do we want? How can Economists help to address issues of poverty, obesity and unemployment? This taster will demonstrate how the study of Accounting, the “language of business�, will help equip you for a future career in the business industry. What can I study?

Accounting A Level

Business The business world is constantly changing, from high street shopping to the online market place. Come and find out about business in practice and challenge yourself to review real-life case studies, identifying the nature of their financial struggles and make recommendations for future success. What can I study?

Law Are you interested in knowing more about how the legal system works? This session is designed to give you an idea of the tough issues the law has to deal with every day and how judges attempt to use legal rules to arrive at fair judgements for defendants, victims and wider society. Studying Law A Level is ideal for students with an enquiring mind. What can I study?

A Level Law

CATERING & HOSPITALITY Build a Burger Come and learn how to produce your very own burger the professional way! Make your own patty* with spices and seasonings, before getting creative with the additional fillings – how creative are you? (*Chicken and vegetarian options are also available.) Due to the hands on approach of this session please wear: suitable clothing covering your torso and shoulders, closed toe shoes or trainers (no flip flops allowed), hair must be tied back and jewellery removed for hygiene purposes. What can I study?

Various catering and hospitality vocational courses on offer or you can apply for an apprenticeship if you have a suitable employer.

CHILDCARE/HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE Early Years Childcare Are you interested in pursuing a career in early year’s childcare, teaching, or social care related roles? If so this is the taster session for you. The session will begin with an overview of our courses, before getting involved in a practical activity to find out what skills are needed to become an effective early year’s educator. What can I study?

Early Years & Childcare Diploma and Health & Social Care Diploma. You can also apply for an apprenticeship if you have a suitable employer.

Health & Social Care Are you interested in a career in nursing, midwifery, becoming a healthcare assistant or social worker? Would you like to study subjects such as communicating with individuals, anatomy and physiology, diversity and rights, psychology and nutrition? Come along to the taster and find out about all these areas and more. Boys are especially welcome on all childcare and health and social care courses. What can I study?

CONSTRUCTION & BUILDING SERVICES Construction & Architecture

Your generation needs to start building housing and fast, especially as the UK has under built by 2.5 million homes. Could you help solve the crisis by designing modern homes that are stunning in looks, but also really quick to build? Come and have a go at designing your own creations using different scales and materials. What can I study?

DOUBLE SESSION

Come and see the skilled trades that make up the modern construction industry. Find out about employment opportunities for qualified crafts people and try out some basic brickwork during the taster session. The sessions will consist of 1.5 hrs practical work, followed by theory including Maths and English used in brickwork. What can I study?

Are you interested in a career in carpentry, perhaps starting up your own business once you have learned the skills of the trade? Come along to this double taster session, learn about the different programmes on offer and get involved in the practical workshop, learning basic carpentry skills. What can I study?

DOUBLE SESSION

Let us “spark” your interest…What would we do without electricity? No TV, Xbox, hot food, lights and many more! Electricity is an incredibly powerful thing that can be found right across the natural world from small animals to massive lightning bolts but thanks to the inquisitive nature of the human species, we have managed to learn about it, generate it and use it to make our lives easier. If you are interested in learning how to harness this energy to create your own electrical business, come along to the practical taster session and find out about our study programmes. What can I study?

Plumbing

Come along to this double taster session to find out about studying plumbing at College. You will get a chance to join in with practical activities throughout the session, whilst also learning the technical skills and theory behind the pipework. What can I study?

Painting & Decorating

DOUBLE SESSION

Explore the painting and decorating workshops as you learn about the finishing trade of the construction industry. Find out about employment opportunities for qualified crafts people and try out some basic painting and wallpapering for yourself. What can I study?

Level 1 & 2 Painting and Decorating

For all construction taster sessions, you need to bring in the following: Old clothes and any protective clothing you may have (overalls, steel toecap boots, goggles, workshop gloves etc). If you do not have steel toecap boots, please wear sturdy footwear. Girls are especially welcome on all these construction and building service courses.

ENGINEERING & MOTOR VEHICLE Engineering: Electronics

DOUBLE SESSION

Get involved and experience building a small functioning electronic circuit that you can take away. This will involve learning some really useful skills alongside using industry-level equipment throughout the session, mixing theory, demonstration and practical activities together to produce the electronic device. If you’re interested in studying electronics, this session is for you! What can I study?

Come along and learn about fabricating a metal component (which you get to take away with you at the end of the lesson). You will be shown practical demonstrations throughout the workshop, learn how to work from a plan, find out about measuring, cutting and folding – all key skills for joining the engineering world. Motor Vehicle: Body Repair

DOUBLE SESSION

Join the motor vehicle team in this double session and use your imagination to design and make a metal creation of your liking. You will be shown a number of demonstrations from welding materials, painting and preparing material, and at the end of the session you get to keep your design as a reminder of the skills you have learnt. What can I study?

DOUBLE SESSION

Explore the motor vehicle workshops during this double session. You will start with a demonstration of a repair procedure on a motor vehicle, before getting the chance to have a go yourself. The question is, can you remember which tools and equipment to use at the correct stages to complete the task? What can I study?

ENGLISH & MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES English Do you enjoy exploring the world through language? Or are you interested in finding out how writers influence our state of mind, making us feel happy or sad, scared or thrilled? If you like discussing, debating and analysing English Language or Literature then come along and get involved. You will take part in a number of short activities designed to introduce you to the two exciting English courses we offer. What can I study?

Modern Foreign Languages: French & Spanish Join the Modern Foreign Language team and come and learn about our A Level courses. Experience an exciting lesson filled with conversation, songs and culture in French and Spanish. What can I study?

FLORISTRY Floristry Are you interested in following a career in floristry? Enjoy a hands on lesson learning the basic skills to creating a beautiful table arrangement, whilst finding out about the different career paths after College. Hairdressing Come and learn about the many and varied career paths open to you in the hairdressing industry. You will enjoy a practical, hands-on class within the hairdressing salons, trying out a range of techniques. HUMANITIES Geography There has never been a better or more important time to study geography. With growing interest in issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation and globalisation, geography is one of the most relevant courses you could choose to study. Come along to this informal taster session to find out more. What can I study?

History Do you think history repeats itself? Do you want to know more about the key events that have shaped the last 150 years of global history? Do you like thinking for yourself and challenging opinions about the present time? Then join us for a lively investigation of the past in this taster session. What can I study?

Politics This lively session will provide different insights into the world we live in, both past and present and will give you the chance to voice your opinions on the political agendas around us. You will enjoy a range of activities to support your understanding of what it means to study politics at College. What can I study?

Sociology Studying sociology at College will require you to develop a critical view of the world we live in, through questioning, discussing and evaluating a range of social issues. Sociology is about understanding society in all its variety and exploring the complex relationships between us as human beings. Topics include sexism, racism, crime, religion, education, equality and a whole range of other areas of debate. What can I study?

IT & COMPUTING Application & Web Development

DOUBLE SESSION

Enjoy a double session learning about our new Application and Web Development course. Starting with a discussion on career opportunities, we will look at progression routes to Higher Education, Apprenticeships and also possible career choices. In the second part of the session you will carry out practical exercises with web technology and look at how modern web apps are designed and developed. What can I study?

Computer Science Come and enjoy an entirely practical session where we will use some simple programming to create animations. You do not need any particular skill with computers, just be able to use a mouse and a keyboard and have a good imagination! You will also receive some information about the course as a whole. What can I study?

Data Analytics A successful business in today’s industries must be a data business. Companies need skilled marketing staff who know how to handle ‘big data’. In this session, we will look at what you can learn from analysing social media using artificial intelligence. We will also explore some top tips for getting web pages to the top of Google search listings. What can I study?

Software & Games Development

DOUBLE SESSION

Join the IT Team for an introduction about how computer games are designed and developed, including working through strategies, basic coding, and creating a basic game sequence. This taster session will also provide information about computing courses and qualifications that are needed to work in the Games Industry. What can I study?

MATHEMATICS Mathematics & Further Mathematics Join the taster session to learn about our A Level courses. Get involved in a lively debate about controversial maths theories and application, take part in games with your peers and learn how to identify the maths behind any game or puzzle. We will also explore how a strong mathematical mind can help you solve problems outside the classroom. What can I study?

MEDIA, RADIO & TV Media Studies Ever wanted to design and layout a media product? This taster is designed to introduce you to the visual language of media as well as a practical activity to apply what you have learnt. This is ideal for students wishing to pursue media at College. What can I study?

It can be studied alongside other A Levels such as Photography, Graphics & English Language that compliment Media as a mixed programme.

Radio Broadcasting Enjoy the chance to see for yourself and participate in the workings of a radio station. Throughout the taster session you will work within a small team to compile a show consisting of music, interview and live material. Please bring a memory stick if you want to take your programme home with you. What can I study?

Level 3 Creative Media Production Diploma

TV Production is one of the main elements of our Full-time Creative Media Production course. Other areas of the course include: Film & TV Production, Animation, Photography, Graphic Design, & Journalism.

TV Production Ever wondered how a live television studio works? This workshop gives aspiring broadcasters a chance to prepare scripts, conduct interviews, operate lights, sound and TV camera equipment as well as basic production and directing. What can I study?

TV Production is one of the main elements of our Full-time Creative Media Production course here Sussex Downs. Other areas of the course include: Film & TV Production, Animation, Photography, Graphic Design, Radio Production & Journalism.

MUSIC Music

DOUBLE SESSION

Come along and join the Music Performance and Production team for an exciting taster session. Learn about the different courses on offer and experience time in the MIDI Mac suite creating your own music using keyboards, loops and samples. You will then have the opportunity to explore our recording studios to create a live drum session. What can I study?

PERFORMING ARTS Performing Arts & Drama Take part in our performance workshop, where you will begin to explore the different skills and qualities developed as part of our Performing Arts, Drama and Theatre Studies courses. Throughout the session you will have an opportunity to trial a whole range of performance techniques and find out about the courses we offer in detail. Make sure you bring appropriate clothing with you for a fun practical session. What can I study?

PHOTOGRAPHY Photography Explore the world of photography with this taster session. Throughout the lesson you will take a look at photograms in the dark room, Photoshop effects and how to manipulate images using the enlarger and the different chemicals that make up black and white photography. PUBLIC & UNIFORMED SERVICES Public & Uniformed Services The taster session will begin with an introduction to our Public & Uniformed service courses. You will experience a typical scenario of dealing with an incident, be challenged with problem solving and teamwork tasks, before finishing with a command-based activity outside. Please wear clothes suitable for outdoors such as track suit bottoms and trainers. What can I study?

SCIENCE Biology Are you interested in the study of how life works? Biology is an intriguing subject which allows you to explore how living organisms function. Come to this exciting and fascinating practical session where you will be investigating the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of a water flea – you will be intrigued to see their structure under the microscope and witness the effects LIVE. What can I study?

Chemistry From the food we consume to the products we use, chemicals are the foundation of modern life. Chemistry A Level gives you a detailed insight into how changes on a molecular level can have a huge impact on our lives. During the taster session you will get a chance to make some reactions of your own! What can I study?

Forensics & Applied Science Are you interested in learning how to extract DNA? Could you have what it takes to analyse a crime scene? If you enjoy learning through a “hands on” approach involving research, practical experiments and prefer assessments through coursework, then this is the course for you! In this session, students will use analytical techniques to identify an unknown chemical compound. Career paths include Forensics, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Environmental Science and Biomedical Science. What can I study?

Physics Are we alone in the universe? We cannot see planets around other stars, but we now know that many thousands exist. Discover how to find ‘exoplanets’ and figure out if they could support life. Imagine you get into an argument with a ‘flat earther’ who thinks that all photos from space are fakes. Discover how the ancient Greeks proved that the earth is a sphere with a simple experiment. What can I study?

Psychology Are you interested in understanding why people behave or think the way they do? Do you wonder why we develop disorders such as OCD, Depression, and Phobias? If you are interested in studying this in a scientific way, then this is the taster for you. During the session, you will undertake practical tasks and discover whether you have the skills to study Psychology at College. What can I study?

SPORT & FITNESS Sport Join the team to find out about sport and fitness at Sussex Downs College. Take a look at how our bodies respond to exercise, what skills are important for becoming a coach and how our mindset can affect our performance and progress. Throughout the session you will touch upon the different career routes within the sport and fitness industry, and also find out about the College’s sports academies.
