What are Taster Days and how do they work? The next few years will be an exciting time as you explore all the choices available to you. Our Year 10 Taster Days will help you make an informed decision about your next steps after Year 11. On the day you will have the opportunity to sample real lessons, speak to teachers and students,and explore the campus. They are a fantastic opportunity for you to see what College life is all about.

CHOOSING YOUR SUBJECTS? Take a look through this programme at the Taster Sessions on offer. When completing your application form select five different taster sessions, ranked from your first to fifth choice. On the day your timetable will be made up of four 55 minute sessions. Please note some of our vocational courses run over two sessions, these are labelled ‘double’ on the course information.

PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY Each day we will be registering students from a number of local schools, alongside home schooled and out of area learners. On arrival staff will guide you to our registration desks to sign in and collect your personal timetable. Throughout the day staff and students will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and also help you to navigate your way around. Feel free to bring snacks and a drink with you, or some money to purchase refreshments during break times.

taster day sessions ART & DESIGN Big Print with bugs and insects Come and meet the art and design team and learn about the different courses on offer. This taster will be a broad-based printing workshop, designed to take you through the various stages of our art and design courses detailed below. What can I study?

A Level Textiles, Fine Art, Graphic Design or the new Triple Award Diploma in Art and Design.

BUSINESS, ECONOMICS & LAW Business Do you have what it takes to start your own company or perhaps you want to pursue a career within the business industry? This session will offer you a taste of the interests, skills and abilities you need to become successful in the competitive business world. You will also find out about the different courses on offer at College. What can I study?

A Level Business Studies, Level 2 & 3 Business Studies BTEC

Economics We all have to make decisions about what to do with our time, money and resources, ensuring we make the most of what we have to THRIVE, not just survive! Within our field we have many decisions to make, including what type of Brexit the UK wants and how economists can help to address key issues like poverty and obesity? This taster will demonstrate how the study of economics aims to solve the continuing problem of meeting infinite wants with scarce resources, and also looks at how even the best businesses could fail without sound financial management. What can I study?

Law Are you interested in learning about how the legal system works? This session is designed to give you an idea of the tough issues the law has to deal with every day and how judges attempt to use legal rules to arrive at fair judgements for defendants, victims and wider society. Studying Law A Level is ideal for students with an enquiring mind. What can I study?

CHILDCARE/HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE Care Are you interested in a career in nursing, midwifery, primary school teaching, becoming a social worker or nursery assistant? Would you like to study subjects such as communicating with individuals, nutrition, child observations, psychology and the human anatomy, physiology, growth and development? Do you want a mix of class based theory and weekly work placement? Come along to the Care taster to find out more! Boys are especially welcome on all Childcare and Health and Social Care courses. What can I study?

Health & Social Care Diploma, Early Years Childcare Diploma or the single award in Health & Social Care which can be part of an A Level programme.

ENGLISH & MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES English Do you enjoy exploring the world through language? Are you interested in finding out how writers influence our state of mind, making us feel happy, sad, scared or thrilled? If you like discussing, debating and analysing English Language and Literature then come along and get involved. You will take part in a number of short activities designed to introduce you to our exciting English courses. What can I study?

Modern Foreign Languages: French & Spanish Join the Modern Foreign Language team and come and learn about our A Level courses. Experience an exciting lesson filled with conversation, songs and culture in French and Spanish. What can I study?

HAIR & BEAUTY Beauty Therapy Enjoy a practical lesson within the on-site beauty salons, learning new skills and exploring the different career paths after College. Please wear closed in, low heeled shoes and clothes suitable for working in a professional environment, e.g. torso covered. What can I study?

Hairdressing Come and learn about the many and varied career paths open to you in the hairdressing industry. You will enjoy a practical, hands-on class within the hairdressing salons, trying out a range of techniques. HUMANITIES Geography There has never been a better or more important time to study geography. With growing interest in issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation and globalisation, geography is one of the most relevant courses you could choose to study. Come along to this informal taster session to find out more. What can I study?

History Do you think history repeats itself? Do you want to know more about the key events that have shaped the last 150 years of global history? Do you like thinking for yourself and challenging opinions about the present time? Then join us for a lively investigation of the past in this taster session What can I study?

Philosophy Philosophy focuses on the benefits of thinking and questioning without expecting definite answers. It exercises our intellectual and imaginative abilities, teaches us how to build and evaluate arguments and lets us explore a range of key concepts in philosophy such as how do we gain knowledge, what is a mind and how do we make ethical decisions. What can I study?

Politics This lively session will provide different insights into the world we live in, both past and present and will give you the chance to voice your opinions on the political agendas around us. You will enjoy a range of activities to support your understanding of what it means to study politics at College. What can I study?

Sociology Studying sociology at College will require you to develop a critical view of the world we live in, through questioning, discussing and evaluating a range of social issues. Sociology is about understanding society in all its variety and exploring the complex relationships between us as human beings. Topics include sexism, racism, crime, religion, education, equality and a whole range of other areas of debate. What can I study?

IT & COMPUTING Animation & Graphical Storytelling

DOUBLE SESSION

Come along and join this exciting new taster session to learn about the different aspects of animation and illustration. Throughout the session you will try out a range of different techniques such as Rotoscoping, whilst gaining an understanding of the different physics such as squash, stretch and bounce. What can I study?

Application & Web Development

DOUBLE SESSION

Enjoy a double session learning about our new Application and Web Development course. Starting with a discussion on career opportunities, we will look at progression routes to Higher Education, Apprenticeships and also possible career choices. In the second part of the session you will carry out practical exercises with web technology and look at how modern web apps are designed and developed. What can I study?

Computer Science Come and enjoy an entirely practical session where we will use some simple programming to create animations. You do not need any particular skill with computers, just be able to use a mouse and a keyboard and have a good imagination! You will also 10 receive some information about the course as a whole. What can I study?

DOUBLE SESSION

Join the IT Team for an introduction about how computer games are designed and developed, including working through strategies, basic coding, and creating a basic game sequence. This taster session will also provide information about computing courses and qualifications that are needed to work in the Games Industry. What can I study?

MATHEMATICS Mathematics & Further Mathematics Join the taster session to learn about our A Level courses. Get involved in a lively debate about controversial maths theories and application, take part in games with your peers and learn how to identify the maths behind any game or puzzle. We will also explore how a strong mathematical mind can help you solve problems outside the classroom. What can I study?

MEDIA, FILM & TV PRODUCTION Film Studies Come to the film quiz of the year and pit your wits against each other in rounds including the Oscars, Indie movies and Superhero Blockbusters. You will find out about the different career opportunities in filmmaking and also further your understanding of the world of cinema developed through our Film Studies course. What can I study?

Media Studies Never trust what you see. Explore the media’s manipulation of ideas and images to zombify your celebrity nemesis using Photoshop! What can I study?

TV and Film Production Interested in filmmaking? Come and meet the team, explore our production suites and find out about our filmmaking production courses. Throughout the session you will have the chance to try out some of our equipment and get a feel for our practical creative media courses. What can I study?

MUSIC Music Throughout this session you will work together as a group to rehearse and perform a well-known popular track. Bring instruments and be prepared to sing! By the end of the lesson we will have come up with a whole arrangement of the sort of music we study here at the East Sussex Academy of Music (ESAM). What can I study?

PERFORMING ARTS Dance Join us for the dance performance workshop and explore the range of skills and qualities you will use and develop when studying Dance at College. Make sure you bring appropriate clothing with you for a fun practical session. What can I study?

Performing Arts: Acting Enjoy this practical acting workshop and learn about the different skills you will be using and developing at College. Throughout the session you will find out about the variety of career opportunities available to our students, and also the differences between our programmes at Sussex Downs. Theatre Production Take part in our production workshop, where you will begin to explore the different skills and qualities developed as part of our Production Arts course. Throughout the session you will explore the different career opportunities and pathways for students once they have finished College. What can I study?

PHOTOGRAPHY Photography Explore the world of photography with this taster session. Throughout the lesson you will take a look at photograms in the dark room, Photoshop effects and how to manipulate images using the enlarger and the different chemicals that make up black and white photography. What can I study?

PUBLIC & UNIFORMED SERVICES Public & Uniformed Services Are you interested in a career in the Armed Forces, Police or Fire Service? Try out our taster activities and start preparing for a career in the public services. You will also find out more information about what goes on in this exciting course. You will need to wear clothes suitable for outdoors such as track suit bottoms and trainers. What can I study?

SCIENCE Biology Are you interested in the study of how life works? Biology is an intriguing subject which allows you to explore how living organisms function. Come to this exciting and fascinating practical session where you will be investigating the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of a water flea – you will be intrigued to see their structure under the microscope and witness the effect LIVE. What can I study?

Chemistry During Chemistry A level ‘organic chemistry’ is a big topic of study. This is the chemistry of carbon compounds that includes petroleum fuels, food, medicines, cosmetics, clothes, DNA and life! In your taster session we will look at the power of O2 in explosives with some big bangs! We will explore how organic molecules can flavour our food and make perfumes with hands-on demonstrations before finishing with the opportunity to make your own mirror using organic chemistry which you can take home. So if you like explosions, smelling good and looking good we will see you there. What can I study?

Forensics & Applied Science Are you interested in learning how to extract DNA? Could you have what it takes to analyse a crime scene? If you enjoy learning through a “hands on” approach involving research, practical experiments and prefer assessments through coursework, then this is the course for you! In this session, students will use analytical techniques to identify an unknown chemical compound. Career paths include Forensics, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Environmental Science and Biomedical Science. What can I study?

Physics Are we alone in the universe? We cannot see planets around other stars, but we now know that many thousands exist. Discover how to find ‘exoplanets’ and figure out if they could support life. Imagine you get into an argument with a ‘flat earther’ who thinks that all photos from space are fakes. Discover how the ancient Greeks proved that the earth is a sphere with a simple experiment. What can I study?

Psychology Join us for a taster in the world of psychology. You will learn about the amazing organ that is our brain. Take part in some activities to help you understand the anatomy of the brain and discuss examples of what happens when the brain is damaged. We will also explore our memory, looking at how we can test its reliability and ways to improve it so we can remember more information - an important skill for all students! What can I study?

SPORT & FITNESS Sport Join the team to find out about sport and fitness at Sussex Downs College. Take a look at how our bodies respond to exercise, what skills are important for becoming a coach and how our mindset can affect our performance and progress. Throughout the session you will touch upon the different career routes within the sport and fitness industry, and also find out about the College’s sports academies. Please wear/bring suitable clothing for outdoor activities such as track suit bottoms and trainers. What can I study?

Come along and learn about working in the travel industry, from joining an airline, working as an airport ground staff, becoming a holiday representative or perhaps how to plan for a once in a lifetime trip around the world to sensational locations.
