Alex Young and IM Sandor Kustar Win State Individual Championship Titles
“Western SD” Team Lassoed Victory in the Capital

International Master Sandor Kustar of Okaton regains the title of SD Chess Champion in the 2007 State Closed Chess Tournament held in Rapid City. On September 15th and 16th Grandview Elementary hosted the tournament closed to South Dakota residents along a scholastic event with two sections. The scholastic tournament was on Saturday only with sections for players rated under 600 and under 1200 in K-12. The title of Junior State Champion goes to Alex Young of Rapid City for finishing the highest in the Closed under 20 years of age. IM Kustar won his first four rounds against Mark Derby of Vermillion, Lyle Hanson of Rapid City, Alex Young of Rapid City, and Nels Truelson of Sioux Falls. In the fifth and final round IM

Kustar agreed to a draw with Terry Likens of Rapid City to lock in his first place position that comes with a trophy, $100 cash prize, and the title. The title of state champion allows IM Kustar to represent South Dakota in the national chess tournaments of state champions. Alex Young had a good tournament performance with wins against Zach and Nels Truelson in rounds 1 and 2, and Terry Likens in round 4. He lost only to IM Kustar in round 3 and agreed to a draw in the last round with Lyle

By Mark Derby The 2007 Teams Chess Tournament was held in Pierre on July 14th and 15th at the Capital’s Visitor Center near the Capital’s scenic lake and war memorial. The first round got underway Saturday morning with the Sioux Falls underdog team “Say Mongoose” (average rating 1355) matched up with the “Upstarts” (average rating 1727) and the highest ranked team “Western SD” ( average rating 1829) paired with the “Pierre” team (average rating 1767) while the “Desert Eagles” (average rating 1618) kept their safety on and took the strategic bye. The two victorious teams of round one both won with a score of 2.5 of 4. The heavy favored Western SD wrangled the win on board one and two, with a draw on three, and a loss on four. The Upstarts had a good start by slithering by Say Mongoose with a draw on board one, a win on two and three, and a losing on four. Round two saw the Upstarts hold Western SD to a draw as Dick Rostrom grabbed a win on board four and the third board powerhouse,
