President’s Perspective Are you focused? Are you staying the course? I hope you are pushing forward in your business and that your goals are being achieved. Now that one third of the year has passed should you evaluate your sales? Your expenses? Your budget? The HBA Board of Directors meets each month to make sure that we are good stewards of the monies you afford us. We are constantly checking our expenses to date, our income to date and comparing it to our current budget. We compare where we are this month to where we were last year at the same time. We move forward in our industry so that we will sustain and inspire others to follow in our footsteps. As a third generation tradesman, my family has endured the trends of the economy. Be encouraged! Stay focused! Stay the course! Come see us at the HBA for encouragement if you need some! How can the HBA benefit you? Most members do not realize the wealth of knowledge available at our local level. If you are a builder, you may benefit from code updates. A subcontractor could benefit from Lead Paint Training or maybe the new Energy Code requirements. We have resources for sample contracts to help you avoid conflicts. We have books to strengthen your business skills, but most of all we have folks that have “been there, done that” to help you. Getting involved at the committee level will only make these resources more easily available to you. Call the HBA if you’d like to volunteer. Networking is such a strong tool to increase your business. Did you know the average cost to attend our monthly Business After Hours is $5! You get fed good food and are able to brush shoulders with my friends. It is also an opportunity to meet great people and make new friends who support your industry. Also, at many of the events you get a chance to win money and/or prizes! We start at 5:30 and I am often home by 7:30. I can’t encourage you enough to get involved! This month we will be having our 2nd annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction. We have added a beer tasting opportunity so there’s something for everybody! Great Kitchens has graciously agreed to allow us to have this event at their showroom located on Highway 90 just south of Mobile Lumber. Watch your fax or ENews for registration information. It’s always fun to get together with friends, so mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 7th! I hope you enjoy the Memorial Day Holiday this month. It is a wonderful privilege to live in a free country! Love on your family! Sincerely,
Jorge
A Bit of Golf History Compliments of Bay Title Insurance Why do full-length golf courses have 18 holes, and not 20, 10 or an even dozen? During a discussion among the membership board at St. Andrews Golf Club in 1858, one of the members pointed out that it takes exactly 18 holes to polish off a fifth of Scotch. By limiting himself to only one shot of Scotch per hole, the Scot figured a round of golf was finished when the Scotch ran out…. Marriage and Golf A man is getting married, and is standing by his bride at the church. Standing by him is his golf clubs and bag. His bride whispers: “What are your golf clubs doing here?” And the man said, “This is not going to take all day is it?” In Two A golfer set up his ball on the first tee, took a mighty swing and hit his ball into a clump of trees. He found his ball and saw an opening between two trees he thought he could hit through. He took another mighty swing with his 3-wood and the ball hit a tree, bounced back, hit him on the forehead and killed him. As he approached the gates of Heaven, St. Peter saw him coming and asked, “Are you a good golfer?” And the golfer replied, “Got here in two, didn’t I?” Plan your next golf outing at the HBA President’s Cup, May 24tgh at Azalea City. See page 4 for details.

Of course, it will continue to have everything of what you’re used to seeing and a whole lot more! Ads will include a link directly to the company’s website, there’ll be lots of photos, and all pages will be in full color. I hope you like it!
