Scania says new smart watch can boo driver efficiency
HScania believes its new smart watch can improve fuel efficiency. The Scania-branded Sony SmartWatch 3, which links with the truck’s OnBoard fleet management system and the driver’s Android smartphone, is capable of monitoring driving styles. And, according to Magnus Lynberg, who works for Scania’s e-business and
new media division, having a permanent reminder of their driving style on their wrist, will make drivers want to better themselves. This in turn will result in improved fuel consumption. With this in mind, he expects hauliers to buy them for their drivers. “Transport companies operate

Daf boosts fuel-efficiency and enhanc brake on XF and CF models Daf is including a raft of fuelefficiency improvements and a more sophisticated engine brake on XF and CF models produced from this month. Both MX-11 and MX-13 engines have a series of detail changes including new piston rings for less friction. The MX-11 gets seven-hole injectors (instead of six-hole) like the MX-13, for better fuel atomisation, and oil flow has been reduced to minimise parasitic losses. The MX-13 gets a new camshaft with revised valve timing

and has a two-speed water pump as used on the MX11’s 400hp and 440hp ratings, again cutting parasitic losses. A new standard feature on CF and XF models with either engine is eco mode, which caps engine torque in gears one to 11 to 90% of the peak value, thus preventing fuelhungry harsh acceleration. Eco mode also prevents the driver overriding the AS Tronic’s gear selection above 30km/h. The driver can turn off eco mode by de-selecting it on the steering www.hauliermagazine.com

TELEMATICS SYSTEMS: GLOBAL TRACKING SOLUTIONS
G
lobal Tracking Solutions (GTS) was established in 2014 by Philip Wathen and is based in Poole in the South West. The company sources equipment from companies such as Quartix, Tomtom or Globavista depending on the customer’s needs. Phil set up GTS to work closely as a team with these suppliers to provide an efficient supply and installation programme, and thanks to this set up the company are able to cover the whole country between us, whether this is a singular vehicle or entire fleets. In most cases when tracking a vehicle is mentioned to drivers, they feel that they are being monitored and think Big Brother. However, today’s technology is relied upon in so many ways, to keep us safe, to help increase productivity and improve efficiency within all areas of our companies. Putting a vehicle tracker is not just focused on the vehicle, it helps the operations of the back office and provides them with: • why
Who, where, when and information at a glance.
• Driving times that can be easily separated between business and pleasure. • Drivers and operators have clear vision and improved logistics. • Customers can be reassured by having accurate, up to date information regarding

greater service.
This is just the back bone of what can be gained from a fleet management system. Important too, is the money that can be saved running each and every vehicle. Fuel consumption and maintenance bills make up nearly 30% of the total cost of owning a vehicle. Both factors are affected by driving style. A stable, fluid, driving style is more fuel-efficient than speeding or stop-start driving in heavy traffic, for example. It has also been proven that aggressive driving results in greater wear and tear on vehicles.
www.hauliermagazine.com
Independent tests have shown that by changing the style of your driving you can reduce fuel consumption by up to 8%. For example, for trips of less than 20miles, these savings can be as much as 17%. Multiply these savings by the number of drivers you have on the road, and it’s easy to see how a tracking device could drive your costs down. Just by having the devices in place encourages people to drive more conscientiously? As with all technology there can be resistance. Certainly, some experienced drivers will never want their driving performance captured and recorded by either telematics or in-vehicle cameras. However, as

beyond basic GPS technology tions continue to advance r specific fleet needs more and more businesses adopt this approach we have seen a cultural shift. Just in the same way that new laws around seatbelts meant a significant shift in mentality, accepting the value and benefits of tracking and recording technology is starting to become a normal experience of commercial driving. One additional piece of technology currently in favour, are the invehicle cameras and the immediate benefits that they offer. Insurance companies like the live feed and history of information and will often lean on operators to implement these systems, as they are extremely useful during a claim or dispute. Benefiting from an immediate
reduction in insurance premiums is a perfect way to assist and offset some of the installation costs. This becomes an ongoing saving each renewal period. When combined with other vehicle telematics you have the ability to complete the picture. Data feeds and recordings are able to capture times, locations, vehicle running conditions, impact force, driving dynamics, etc. When matched with video evidence this enables us to cross reference accurately and fully. Unfortunately, investing in safety and security measures is often low on the priority list. Clearly legislation and rules governing working practices become a big incentive to adopt the right measures. In such cases
www.hauliermagazine.com
compliance is not an option but essential. Hopefully, when companies start to see the overall benefits, help with cost savings and keep ahead of the competition, this type of technology will gain its own appeal. Any size of fleet can be worked on and all types of vehicle are covered: motorbikes, cars, vans, HGV, Plant equipment, yachts, power boats, luxury yachts. GTS is diverse, and as long as GTS have all the information from the customer that lets them know what they want out of their fleet/vehicle/vessel, they can supply a system that suits. GTS is based in the South West and so generally work that area, but the company will happily cover the UK. Some companies find the costs of telematics systems a little daunting, but if they look at the bigger picture these new systems are most definitely the way forward and generally helpful at all levels. GTS currently has a system that is affordable and provides the information required to help any company. In addition, to the surprise of many, it is possible to reduce carbon footprint by the use of telematics. Without this technology we have no clear sight, and it will definitely help guide us in the right direction to reducing it. evels of carbon emissions in the UK have been well documented, especially in recent years. When all factors such as business and power are taken into account, emissions are decreasing year on year. Transport is only one contributing factor, but its share of the overall problem is growing. Since 1978, CO2 emissions within transport have been steadily increasing with a slight dip in recent years due government intervention such as The Department for Transport’s efforts at MOT tests coupled with a rise in vehicle manufacturer consciousness. However, it’s worth noting that a majority of these initiatives have been focussed on cars in preference to larger vehicle types.
initiatives and objectives in place, companies are now recognising that reducing emissions within their fleet is a viable way to reduce their carbon footprint… and save money. Skanska’s Green Initiative plays a huge part in the company’s corporate social responsibility programme. As a forward thinking company, Skanska recognise the impact that driver behaviour has on fleet emissions and the cost to the business.
telemetry data with a view to reducing fuel consumption.
Driver behaviour is the key factor where significant CO2 and cash savings can be achieved. From July to September an 8 week study of 11 transit van equivalent LGVs was conducted. For the duration of the study period the When we look at the effect of sample vehicles undertook a HGV and LDV commercial vehicles routine mix of work representative on carbon emissions in road of operational requirements. and geographical location of work was consistent across the period. This way, individual fluctuations within the group could safely be attributed to driver behaviour. The pilot highlighted where a single aspect of driver behaviour could be isolated as the main influence on carbon emissions. The driving behaviour analysis demonstrated the impact of excessive idling on fuel consumption. Idling delivers zero miles per gallon and increases engine wear and tear. The driving behaviour also illustrated the impact of harsh acceleration on fuel consumption. Harsh acceleration results in

ejected system.
Skanska have monitored potential CO2 and fuel savings within their fleet and are now looking to set KPI targets. The telematics solution facilitates the effective management of driving behaviour, through which fuel consumption can be improved. Skanska are targeting an annual fuel reduction of up to 10.3% which equates to approximately 1.46 tonnes of CO2 or around £640 per vehicle. As the study below indicates that the actual www.hauliermagazine.com
What does this mean to Skanska? One of Skanska’s strategic objectives is to reduce energy use and associated CO2 emissions globally. As one of the top ‘Times Green Companies’, Skanska will see significant reductions in fleet carbon emissions. With the telematics system installed as one of their green initiatives, Skanska can expect to consolidate on their current position. In addition to the environmental benefit, Skanska can expect to save between £640 – £1,000** in fuel per van, over the coming year, achieving a favourable return on the initial capital outlay. Boyd Neal, Business Manager at Skanska Utilities adds, “We at Skanska are wholly committed to our green agenda and have found that by implementing a tracking and telematics system we have been able to keep in line with our fleet company policy…”

Today it is a family run company run by Michael Moore Managing Director, Lorraine Moore and Laurie Moore, Directors. In 2001 the company left Tockwith and bought larger premises at Hessay much closer to York, and the company was renamed Tockwith Training Services to keep a link with their past. The site comprises of a large tarmac manoeuvring area and two new build industrial units for training purposes. TTS has had 10% year on year growth since moving to York. The company now has 5 full time instructors, but every customer is still assured of a professional, individually focused and an enjoyable training course, some things never change. During the last 40+ years TTS have provided transport related training that their local customers have asked for and although they don’t provide every type of funded training available like some training companies, they and their customers understand that and stick to what we they are best at,

In recent years they have developed their own driver CPC courses which have been extremely popular and well received. On their fleet they have Two 18 ton category C vehicles which are both the latest Volvo Fe 4x2 rigid with the i-shift gearbox, Two 7.5 ton trucks, one articulated 44ton truck which is soon to be replaced by a brand new Volvo FH with again the I-shift automated gearbox and two buses. Over the last 25 years there have been many changes within the industry, some good and some not so good. TTS have witnessed increased customer awareness, regulation, and rising costs and unlike some of their competitors they have always been ready to modernise and change.
Due to the driving test rules changing to allow driver to take their test in an automatic gearbox equipped truck they have bought the latest Volvo’s to enable their customers to drive the best trucks available and have seen their average pass rate increase from 70% to 90%. The company have found training in automatics has had a massive increase in driver success and a vast improvement in safety for both their instructors and the general public. It has made general vehicle control better, hill starts extremely simpler due to the hill start feature and given drivers more ability to concentrate on hazards they encounter while preparing for their test. In 2010 the company certainly noticed a big downturn in the industry but they have found a good surge in business this year and are determined to invest in their company to enable us to

strongly trade over the next 5 years, offering what customers expect of a professional driving school. The company has plans in place to grow and capitalise on the shortage of drivers and has recently ordered a new Volvo FH with I-shifts gearbox to replace their old manual model which will only increase its astonishing pass record even more. They also plan to purchase a very large lorry mounted crane to offer category D+E ALLMI operator training using remote control and various attachments. One thing is for sure with TTS, they put their customers first which is what they specialize in providing all year round to their customers.

Start Training started its life back in April 2009, when Managing Director Paul Moon acquired the company from a haulage firm based in Southampton, and promptly upped sticks and opened at a new location in Portsmouth. This humble start for the company saw Paul working alongside one other Instructor, operating just two vehicles. As the company began to grow with the success of its students 2 Start expanded gradually; encompassing the enlargement of the fleet to include a further, larger depot in Portchester. Over the next few years, 2 Start saw this growth continue and began to operate a further wealth of training. Back in 2002, Paul qualified as an Instructor with the Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR) to provide Forklift Training and was then able to expand 2 Start into the

world of Plant Machinery Training. Between 2009 and today, 2 Start LTD has seen an explosive transition from a small and developing company to being a well established and well staffed training facility. 2 Start are now on the map as one of the largest training providers on the south coast, and we’re still expanding. 2013 saw the opening of 2 Starts second depot in Reading, able to provide training to Berkshire and the surrounding areas. Each of the depots being staffed by highly experienced Instructors, each with their own long and successful careers within the transport industry. Instructors on the road have operated just about every type of vehicle amongst every sector of the industry; there’s always somebody around with the answers. With the recognized expansion of the company, its fleet, vehicles and staff; Plant Machinery followed suit. 2 Start are now able to teach and examine on a staggering twenty-three

Plant Machinery training is conducted by a close-knit team of four fully qualified Instructor/Examiners, and with Paul now qualified as a Tutor (the highest accolade ITSSAR can accredit) the sky’s the limit! Having taught 1764 students on Machines since its beginnings, 2 Start have an excellent foundation built on its experience. But the expansion doesn’t stop there! Two vehicles and two staff in 2009, has become seventeen trucks, six forklifts, two Lorry Mounted Cranes and twenty-two members of staff. 2 Start are now looking to open their third depot in the Southampton area, increasing the areas of coverage for the training centre. Looking back over the past few years and the huge success of the company, this is all expressed in the success of the students. Drivers having been trained by 2 Start number in their thousands, and will have together covered millions of miles since the beginning! Paul remains uncompromisingly

arrot Driver Training was established in 2009 by Duncan Garwell as a traditional “School of Motoring”, offering driving tuition in cars and specialising in intensive courses. Over the last 5 years the company have seen steady growth for intensive training to such an extent that they no longer offer traditional driving lessons and In December of 2013 they purchased a trailer so that they could offer their first type of vocational B+E training. Duncan has worked within the logistics sector for over 20 years and has plenty of contacts in and around Hull where the commercial training company is based, so it was a natural progression towards LGV training and signifies why within 6 months of putting their car and trailer on the road the company was able to expand and buy their first LGV, an Iveco Eurocargo 75e for C1 (7.5t training) 3 months later and due to increased demand they purchased their first

heavy LGV which is a DAF CF 75 410 wagon and drag. The last two years has seen the company expand from a one man band to having nine employees and quite uniquely being the only driver training provider in East Yorkshire that can offer driver training in all categories from car to LGV and more recently they have been able to offer PCV training.
shorten them so they are easier to get round corners. Parrot Driver Training don’t and won’t. This has certainly been instrumental in the company’s growth, simply because the logistics sector can identify with their realistic approach towards training.
All of the LGV instructors are exindustry, it’s a very important rule that Duncan has in place. When we train new students, it’s not all just about passing the test, there is much more to driving trucks than “ticking boxes” for the driving examiner, this is one of the main reasons behind the purchase of the full size and spec training vehicle.
The company operates in Hull, Beverley and East Yorkshire and their Fleet consists of eight vehicles in total including cars and trucks. The DAF CF they use is a full size wagon and drag combination (18.75 metres) with a 16 speed gearbox (range change and splitter). They haven’t altered the wagon at all for training as they feel you should train and take your test in a vehicle that is relevant to what type of vehicle you will actually drive for a living.
Too many training providers have little four wheelers because they think it will be easier for the student to pass the test. There are some companies that go as far as altering their vehicles to make them lighter, or

COMMERCIAL TRAINING: PARROT DRIVER TRAINING turn to LGV training as a way of keeping themselves in employment. Parrot Driver Training have started attracting more and more corporate work for both training and more commonly individual driver assessments. They can supply defensive driver training, initial driver cpc, load safety awareness and eco-driving courses. They have corporate connections with Ferndale Transport, Cranswick Country Foods, LCS Crane Hire Holme on Spalding Moore, Abbey Logistics Group, Lighting and Signs Hull and several scaffolding companies also in Hull to name but a few. The company would like to thank Andrew Saltmer at Ferndale Transport as the company operate from his warehousing and distribution centre. Duncan Said “He has been instrumental in helping us with our vehicle parking, security and manoeuvring area, without which we wouldn’t be able to offer our LGV training”. Running an LGV training school lends itself extremely well from a
logistics provider operating centre, they even have a policy whereby students who pass the LGV C+E (Class 1) can be offered employment straight away, which once again helps them as a business and gives them a massive commercial advantage over their competitors. The economic downturn has definitely helped us grow, simply due to the massive driver shortage and lack of employment. We have even seen academically qualified personnel turn to LGV training as a way of keeping themselves in employment. The cost of fuel is a bug bear for anyone involved in transport and since the introduction of training vehicles now needing to be loaded for driving test purposes this has seen the company’s fuel consumption increase by about 10% overall. This played no mistake buying a 16 speed 9.5l six cylinder 410 DAF for training, they also had it re-mapped for a bit more horsepower, this helps keep the economy up a bit and allows them to be very competitive against other trainer providers using much smaller engines to do the same job and pull the same weight as they are having
to. Their CF rigid weighs 14,570kgs loaded and is averaging well over 10 mpg and bearing in mind it does lots of town driving with inexperienced drivers they certainly can’t complain. The company care about the environment and do their best to try and educate their students in ecodriving whilst they are training with them. They have a “green” policy in their office with very minimal paperwork, almost everything is in digital format with around 85% of their correspondence sent via email. The company are to put a second DAF CF rigid on the road in the first week of November 2014, this is simply due to demand and are currently planning on buying a DAF CF 4x2 tractor unit and trailer early in 2015 for the artic training. They have recently started mini-bus training (D1) with Category D training to be rolled out by summer next year. In addition due to popular requests from the corporate sector Duncan hopes to have forklift and Hiab training available at some point in the near future. WWW.PARROT.ME.UK 01482 811123

elebrating their 35th Anniversary CTT is a family run company that has been operating since 1979. The reason behind their success is exceptional customer care. This has led to a reputation for their service levels that spans not only nationally but also internationally. CTT have customers traveling from Northern Ireland to train with them. The (now retired) company secretary, Betty Petrie, worked on the philosophy that you look after the customers and they will look after you. In Betty’s case, this was so true that she often put them up at her own home for the duration of their training. The company are happy to provide training to everyone and anyone providing they hold the right licence requirements and if they don’t hold the necessary requirements CTT will do their upmost to help them achieve those requirements. In April 2014, the ownership of the company was taken over by Fred Dowling and his Wife Natasha. The previous owner Bob Stock and his right hand Lady, Betty Petrie, made the difficult decision to call it a day and retire after thirty years in the business. However, the most important decision
40
in the sale was that there can be no changes with regard to the service levels the company offers to the customer and the way it is run. The experience will be the same but perhaps with some additional offerings. Fred, was one of Bob’s instructors and Natasha having being involved with the company during Fred’s time there meant that they both knew straight away that they wanted to carry on with the success and help it grow to the next stage. This is already evident in the upgraded fleet and the newly purchased Training room and offices which they are moved into last week. CTT mainly operate within Central Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire trying to keep to test routes where possible but they also use their private reversing area that is set up to mimic a test scenario. This enables pupils to experience what is expected from them at test. CTT’s commercial training also extended internationally to New York! A customer who was immigrating to London was told to contact CTT about doing his LGV licence by a friend who had already emigrated from London to New York. The company currently operate a fleet of 9 vehicles that range from a ford
www.hauliermagazine.com
S-max with an Ifor Williams trailer for horse box and caravan towing training to a DAF 85.410 artic and Trailer. They have just upgraded Their Artic from a “T” reg Volvo FH12 to the DAF 85.410 artic and they have also just upgraded their two sister Truck V867FPO & V869FPO. These have been the workhorses of the company for over 10 years. They also have two DAF CF85.410 Autos that are just in final stages of being painted and sign written. New legislation surrounding vehicle training now allows the company to train candidates and test them in an automatic lorry and this still allows the driver to retain a manual licence providing they have passed a manual car test. Although they still have one or two manual Lorries on fleet, the new legislation is great for them as it allows their pass rate to continue to rise and is less stressful for the trainee as the complex gearboxes are one thing less to have to worry about on their test. They also run a Mercedes 7.5t Ambulance for C1 courses and for their contract with several ambulance services and medical colleges. CTT’s comprehensive vehicle and classroom service includes LGV Cat B+E/D1/D/C1/C/C+E at a competitive
COMMERCIAL TRAINING: COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT TRAINING price and at an exceptional standard with DSA qualified instructors. They are also a JAUPT approved training centre offering DCPC periodic Training on site with a range of instructors with Years of experience within each subject they teach. Their most popular course is Tachographs and Drivers hours as it is something that is not very often taught in detail to new drivers. Until the recent changes in driver periodic training, most new drivers were forced to learn on the job with a quick 15 minutes in the Cab with the Transport Manager and that is where bad habits and potentially costly infringements are made. With the ever changing legislation, this subject that can be a bit grey for most and that is why we have had at least 1 tacho course running each week for the last 6 weeks. They also offer Emergency first and at Work either at their centre or at the client’s premises and ADR – Hazardous Goods, Forklift and Hiab. Over the years CTT has seen three recessions and through cautious management the business has survived each time but not without a cost. The first recession in 1980 took its biggest toll financially and the company had to downsize drastically. However, Bob Stock, the owner at the time did a fantastic Job and managed to keep it going through the tough times and he rebuilt the company back to full strength. Speaking to Bob he said “there was a dramatic decrease in the amount of people training as there was a lack of jobs and people did not have the money and being a young company it really took its financial toll, there was plenty of sleepless nights and even a very serious thought of packing it all in”. Then, over the years and the further recessions Bob had learnt from the first time that the tactical way to steer the business was to scale down and up as necessary. Bob’s ability to control the growth has lead us to where we are now, planned and continued growth. The company know statistically that there is a serious shortage now with a lack of new drivers going in to the transport industry. However, they have a continuous flow of new and existing drivers gracing their door for a new licence or an upgrade and they have noticed a marked increase in the number of pupils having their licences
upgraded by the company they work for. They also have local businesses and agencies ringing them on a daily basis looking for all classes of drivers with no experience needed for large contracts with large blue chip companies at very competitive rates of pay. I do wonder if I was in the position as the owner of a haulage company looking for a driver, how easy I would be able to find a driver and at what cost? We are still having individuals calling asking for the periodic drivers CPC where they have missed the 10th September deadline and they are unable to drive. I think that many thought the periodic CPC would follow our European counterparts and be delayed. From what I can see, something was misjudged somewhere because of the number of drivers that have yet to complete their qualification. Again we have companies that are desperately trying to get their drivers through their CPC as they have missed the deadline but have continued to drive for various reasons, personal and commercial. As a JAUPT approved centre CTT are regularly running CPC courses that range from the odd day or two here and there to full week (35hour) courses. And it does still worry me how many people I see on each course and even now how many people on the courses we see that are still driving and have been since before the deadline yet they are still to gain there CPC card. It is a vicious circle, it is difficult for a driver to take a week off work and still support his family while not earning and having to pay out large amounts but they cannot continue to work and earn until they have completed their 35hours so although many would argue they have had five years to qualify, on a personal level, I can sympathise as for some it is difficult to what other option they can take, Sean says. Now into October, by now it should have started to slow down but up until the end of September and even before the Deadline on the 10th September CTT had courses running every week and thy were having to turn people away because they could not accommodate the volume of people in their training rooms.
www.hauliermagazine.com
The state of the industry as a whole, and the long term effect on the economy is a worrying prospect and something only time will tell. CTT are very proud to have hit their 35th Year in Business and they have celebrated by replacing their older vehicles with modern ones and are looking forward to the next 35 years in business. The company plan to continue to expand their offerings to their clients including National and International CPC and some more specific instructor training. They have also just updated their fleet vehicles to new DAFs both of which are Euro5 and that has led the company too reduce emissions and far lower fuel consumption. All their instructors are required to switch off the engine whenever the opportunity presents itself and they try to minimise the time the vehicle is stopped idling. As technology improves, this cycle will continue and no doubt in a very short period of time they will be looking at LGV electric vehicles and the training that will be required to support their place in the future. CTT would like to thank all of their staff, Natasha, Sean and Chelsea who run the office and look after the day to day running of the Business and arrange all the timings and booking of the pupils and look after the instructors. Betty Petrie – for doing an absolutely amazing job having run the day to day work for the company for the last 35 years mostly by herself and an extra thank you for the delicious cakes she bakes for the staff and pupils now. All of their instructions Eddie E, Eddie O, Phil, John, Shamus & Bob for the great job they all do training pupils and helping maintain the vehicles and an extra special thank you for their longest standing instructor Eddie English for all years he has committed to CTT.

LM Training Services Ltd. is one of the most respected driver training companies in the country, delivering a high standard of training since 1993. ALM owner and Director, Darren Coleman, started the company over 21 years ago. He was initially supported by the Prince’s Trust and provided with advice by the Thurrock Business Association. It is very much a family concern with his eldest son a fully qualified trainer, his eldest daughter the Office Manager and his youngest daughter following an administrative apprenticeship with the company. The company has over 20 staff delivering training on a wide range of programmes. All staff are fully qualified and external inspections have rated delivery as good or better. The company has its own quality manager who oversees the development and structure of all programmes. Success rates are

Darren was born in Tilbury and has a passion for ensuring that his business is based in the area. The current Head Office and largest training base is at the Riverside Business Centre in Tilbury. A second base operates from the Tilbury Resource Centre, a third delivers from the Seedbed Centre in Colchester and a fourth from the Tendring Enterprise Studio School in Clacton. Their Tilbury bases are easily accessible by rail from Fenchurch Street to Tilbury Town or Ferry from Gravesend. A free public bus service operates from the station to their base. Another direct bus service connects their Colchester Centre with Colchester Station. The current demand is high for Driver CPC courses and Fork Lift Driver training programmes. ALM delivers

directly-funded programmes for the EFA and offer programmes funded directly by schools for 14 to 16 year olds. They support all local Job Centre Plus branches by providing a range of courses aimed at re-equipping unemployed trainees with the skills to get back into employment. In addition the company has now established a stand-alone CIC Training Company to ensure that profits can benefit the local community. All the company’s fork lift trucks are now electric following a collaborative project with the Low Carbon Trust. Their new Mobile Training Vehicle carries three state-of-the-art logistics training simulators. Visits to France and China informed the company’s decision to obtain units offering a real experience, with full size controls and large TV screens to replicate the experience of being in charge of a Fork Lift or Crane. These allow learners of all ages to operate a full size set of controls on a range of machines from the
COMMERCIAL TRAINING: ALM TRAINING safety of an air-conditioned learning environment. The simulators ensure that whilst training is real it is costeffective and accessible to all. They are particularly useful in developing vehicle steering skills in candidates who do not drive and are the only solution to offering younger learners the chance to operate a machine. The present Government has increased post-19 funding available for the unemployed to access training but smaller companies are reducing the amount spent on training, hence fewer new candidates but continuing demand for retraining. Pre-16 and 16-to-19 funding has disappeared since the Government changed the way schools are funded. Unfortunately the impact of fuel costs and taxation is complex and restrictive. ALM Training is maintaining training costs to support companies who are continuing to ensure they have a fully trained workforce. They are managing to absorb the ever
increasing cost of sending assessors to training sites and will endeavour to continue this in the short term. ALM Training was awarded the 2014 “Logistics and Distribution Award in the Thurrock Business Awards; other comprehensive awards include 21 years unbroken training delivery in Tilbury approved by several awarding bodies RTITB, NCFE, BTEC, Pearson, British Safety Council and they hold a Matrix award for providing good quality Information Advice and Guidance. They also deliver directly funded programmes for the Education Funding Agency and all trainers are fully qualified and approved. The company has introduced a mobile training vehicle and minibuses available to transport groups of learners to training bases. Furthermore, ALM has just been awarded a contract to enrol and train a number of workers to fill six month contracts in Shipol Airport
in the Netherlands. Training will equip them with the skills to load and unload aircraft cargo holds. The Netherlands Company will offer accommodation and support for the duration of the contract. This specialized training will be offered from their training base in Tilbury. Early discussions are underway to develop a new training campus in Thurrock. This venue would offer a full range of practical training opportunities as well as extensive classroom and virtual programmes. Their intention is to be able to offer logistics, construction and even road building courses from a purpose-built centre on the Thames Enterprise Park. They are proud members of the Essex Federation of Small Businesses, AELP (Association of Employment and Learning Providers) and KATO (Kent Association of Training Organisations). ALM are to obtain Excellence Skills for delivering
confident in their bid the new Standard of Award introduced by Logistics for companies Driver CPC training.
The company also actively support Thurrock Council in the measures taken to reduce carbon emissions. In a collaborative project with the Low Carbon Trust they exchanged their gas driven fork lifts for electric powered vehicles. The Riverside Business Centre, managed by Base Point, has the capability to generate electricity by wind turbine and all lighting is approved by the Low Carbon Trust. www.almtrainingservices.co.uk 01375 489 738

he all-new Ford Tourneo Connect is essentially a hardworking Transit Connect van with rear seats and windows. Now in its second generation, this practical MPV is less boxy than its predecessor and features many improvements aimed at boosting comfort and refinement – something that Ford hopes will distinguish it from rivals, including the Citroen Berlingo Multispace and Peugeot Partner Tepee. Ford’s reputation for building sturdy and reliable commercial vehicles is second to none, while its range of stylish MPVs is also much lauded. And with the Ford Tourneo Connect the manufacturer has managed to combine the best of both of these things. The Tourneo Connect swaps the bulkheads and empty loading bay of the Transit Connect for a rear row of seats and lots of clever storage solutions – one of the advantages of being built on the van’s platform. There’s a selection of strong 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engines (a choice of 94bhp and 113bhp), as well as the excellent 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol, which continues to impress - even in a bulkier model like this.

Vehicle Review: Ford Tourneo Connect 1.6 Ecoboost would be nearly as refined as the C-MAX on the motorway. In town, the steering is light – which helps with parking – but well weighted and accurate when cornering. The Tourneo feels sturdy inside and out, and with its Transit underpinnings you can expect it to be extremely durable. Despite that, Ford scored rather badly in our 2014 Driver Power satisfaction survey, where it ranked in 25th place, with owners complaining about poor build quality and patchy reliability. On the plus side, the Tourneo Connect comes with the same three-year/60,000-mile warranty and 12-year anticorrosion guarantee as Ford’s more mainstream models. Buyers can also relax when it comes to safety, because the Tourneo features all the life-saving equipment you’d expect. and can carry a wide variety of ambient loads due to the internal height of their trailers. Their fleet consists of 3 Mercedes actros tractor units and 3 curtain siders with an internal high between 9’10 and 10’2 which enables them to carry out a variety of different specialised work. All their vehicles are fitted with a tracking device and each cab has the latest sat navs and hands free kits. The company care about the environment and all their vehicles use ad blue which reduces the amount of carbon emissions that is released in the atmosphere. They also service and repair the vehicles on a regular basis to ensure they are up to standards and meet regulations. All their current fleet are euro 5’s and they will look to upgrade them to euro 6 in the very near future.

The recent recession has not affected the company due to the budgeting and planning that was implemented prior to the business commencing. The cost of fuel is always a concern for all transport companies but H and I Transport ensure fuel is monitored on a weekly basis to find the most competitive rates on the current market. The company had their first anniversary in May this year and they won their first trophy at Hereford truck show in August for 3rd best Mercedes actros. They are proud members of the Road Haulage association (RHA) and they also hold an environmental health certificate which enables them to carry waste. They also make sure that every year they make a charitable donation to local children’s organisation to help with different fund raising events.
GENERAL HAULAGE: H and I Transport The immediate future plans at the company are to set up a warehouse and distribution centre which will run alongside their current transport department and they will be looking to increase their fleet of vehicles in the very near future. The company are also organising and hosting a truck show in Evesham in April 2015 which will be open to the public on the 25th and 26th April. Petroleum Haulage: Suckling Transport
S
uckling Transport is an independent haulage contractor which specialises in the provision of petroleum tanker haulage services. The Company’s Head Office is situated close to the M25 motorway in West Thurrock, Essex. The company is registered to the quality standard ISO 9001:2008 and was the first U.K. firm to register to BS EN 12798 which specifically refers to the carriage of dangerous goods by road. The Company operates a modern fleet of 50 tanker vehicles in the UK. The majority of this fleet are painted in the customers’ livery, with the remaining vehicles operating in the distinctive TankShare brand used by the Company. The company has been trading for more than 70 years. Thomas Suckling started J.W. Suckling Transport in 1938. In 1986 the parent company decided to create a fleet specialising in the distribution of fuel for oil companies using the terminals on the Thames. Their subsidiary, Suckling Transport, seemed the obvious choice and the Company has enjoyed continuous growth in that sector to this day, working for major oil companies such as ConocoPhillips, Shell, Total, Petroplus Marketing and Scottish Fuels.

In practice, the policies and procedures are designed to ensure that our employees’ exposure to risk is minimised through assessments, including full site and route risk assessments for every address we deliver to. The company supports this through a management regime
that ensures compliance with regard to EU drivers’ hours regulations, speeding, the use of mobile telephones and other issues that affect safety. The Company provides incentives to drivers to improve safety, holds driver toolbox talks and its managers conduct behavioural safety observations of drivers at work. It has effective methods for communicating safety to the workforce through our quarterly News Bulletin, a monthly Safety in Numbers newsletter and, more formally, through Health Safety and Environment committees, handbooks, policies and procedures. And, finally, it provides training to ensure all employees have the skills they need to perform their duties safely. The Company uses the Haddon Matrix as the basis for its accident management gap analysis to ensure it responds across the whole of the business both in a pro-active manner and in an appropriate reactive one at, and after, an accident. Case Study: Goodyear Dunlop Winter Tyres
Goodyear Dunlop provides winter truck tyres for every need

n many countries, the M+S designation defines a truck tyre as a winter tyre. M+S tyres on truck drive axles are certainly a good choice for winter conditions but there are specific winter tyres that offer better performance on snow and ice than just M+S marked tyres. Goodyear Dunlop, with its Goodyear, Dunlop and Fulda brands, offers a wide selection of such tyres, which are specifically suited for winter road conditions. It is important to make the distinction between standard and winter truck tyres. In fact the distinction should be made between tyres with M+S marking and tyres specifically designed for winter use. Both carry the M+S marking but specific winter tyres produced by the Goodyear Dunlop Group carry the alpine or 3-Peak Mountain Snow Flake (3PMSF
) symbol on their sidewalls, in addition to the M+S marking. Since November 2012, the 3PMSF symbol has been a voluntary identification, which shows that the winter performance of those truck tyres has passed an ISO standard test; UNECE Regulation No. 117.02 defines the method of testing by comparing traction on hard-packed snow between a reference tyre and a test tyre. To pass this test, a tyre must be at least 25 percent better than the reference tyre in six out of ten test cycles. Truck tyres that have passed this test may use the 3PMSF marking and are officially classified as snow tyres for severe winter conditions. Truck tyres with the 3PMSF symbol are a far superior choice for most winter driving conditions than tyres that possess only the M+S designation. Transport companies

whose vehicles operate during the winter months in snowy areas, should use 3PMSF marked tyres. Unpredictable weather conditions across almost all over Europe and increasingly stringent winter tyre regulations have led to a growing demand for all-season tyres. Especially during the winter period traction on the drive axle is key to secure the vehicles mobility. This was a main consideration when the new Goodyear KMAX and FUELMAX tyres were being developed. As a result, they were designed as true all-season tyres and the drive tyres of both lines meet full winter tyre requirements carrying both the 3PMSF and the M+S markings on the sidewalls. Vehicles operating in areas with severe winter weather conditions should use specially designed

tarted in 2008 as H. Clough Transport with 2 DAF trucks in the fleet and working mainly in the UK the company was re-branded in December 2012 as DPK International when Darren Kimberley took over as MD. The Company swiftly moved into European distribution due to Darren’s contacts and 10 years’ experience of working on the continent. Over the next 2 years they worked on expanding the company and their brand. They acquired new vehicles and trailers to meet growing demands. Just recently the company have acquired 2 more meat railers to the fleet and next year are looking to make the move from 6 trucks up to 10. They have recently moved into their own premises as they plan to expand on the company and raise their brand as one of the best in the meat transport industry.
They also have self-employed drivers who work on a full time basis as well as owner drivers that they subcontract work to on a full time basis. At present the company has 3 Scania, 2 Volvos and 1 Daf truck which they operate to specialise in transportation of hanging meat & temperature controlled goods and ambient goods mainly for the food industry to Europe. They also work on ADR contracts for Ian Robinson Transport Ltd in the UK and Europe.
DPK International currently have 5 full time drivers and employ 10 people at present and are looking to increase this number in the very near future.
The company are committed to improving the business and embrace any technology that they feel will help. All their fleet have smart phones with European and data tariffs fitted. All have email capabilities that all the drivers are trained to use. They also use cloud based technology to send and receive information to and from their drivers, this is most useful as they can all access any of this information from anywhere as long as they have a phone or laptop

and an internet connection. They also have dynafleet fitted to some of their vehicles. The company want to make sure that all of their fleet vehicles and trailers are fitted with trackers in the 1st quarter of 2015. They also care and do their part for the environment, so they invest in newer more efficient vehicles and service them regularly to meet the carbon emissions regulations. They also train their drivers to operate as efficiently as possible and with the help of Dynafleet they can monitor drivers driving styles and advise where improvements can be made. Reducing emissions also saves them money so it’s a subject they take seriously and is the responsibility of every DPK employee to make changes that count. During the recession people are spending less so generally business has taken a bit of a hit across the board. However the company haven’t been affected too much though. As the majority of their work is for the
REFRIGERATION HAULAGE: DPK INTERNATIONAL food industry and as much as people are tightening the purse string, the food industry is still booming. The company operate to a budget and work hard to stick to it, they spend only when they need too and they see that as being the best way for any growing business to operate. Rising costs of fuel are crippling the industry and evidentially it’s becoming harder to turn a profit for any haulier. DPK are stung by the this especially due to the fact so much of their work is abroad so as well as the cost of the fuel the company has to pay further costs such as ferry or shuttle crossings. They are seeing less and less UK based hauliers and they believe due to these constant rising fuel prices this trend is going to continue until UK based hauliers are a thing of the past. Hopefully the government will come to their senses while we still have a transport industry and give more help to hauliers. At the moment Fair Fuel UK are doing their best.
To try and beat this the company try to fill up their vehicles in Europe where possible to try and combat costs but apart from that they just have to grin and bear it like everybody else. It’s coming up to the company’s 2nd anniversary as DPK International which everybody at the company are all very proud to be part of. To mark the occasion they are going to replace their first European tractor unit with a new Scania R560. 2015 is going to be a big years for DPK, they intend on growing their fleet from 6 wagons to 10 Which will of course mean more staff and most importantly more work. In addition to their new premises they have just acquired they company now want to expand further and get their own office space on site as soon as possible. ou can now buy a Ford Transit for almost any load-carrying eventuality. With the Transit Custom, Transit Connect, the standard Transit at the top of the range and, this, the Transit Courier, at the bottom, the Transit van is now four. It covers every major van market sector, multiplying the reach of Ford’s all-powerful Transit van brand. The Transit Courier arrives as the last piece in the Ford Transit jigsaw, completing a process that has seen the entire range renewed in under two years. It’s what’s known as a B-platform integrated style van: a purpose-designed van based on Ford’s B-segment platform that also serves as the basis of Ford’s B-Max and Fiesta passenger cars, not to mention the even smaller Ford Fiesta van. The Courier competes against small van rivals like the Mercedes Citan Compact, Nissan NV200 and the platform-sharing triplets, Peugeot Bipper, Citroen Nemo and Fiat Fiorino. It’s more compact than the Transit Connect and is being pitched at operators who need to shift small loads in urban areas where compact size and a tight turning circle are the things to have. The range is refreshingly simple with the Transit Courier offered

The Kombi is a mix of van and small MPV with a row of three seats in the rear that can be folded to maximise the luggage space behind. All models get ESC stability control, remote central locking, a DAB radio with Bluetooth and a USB device dock but the Trend adds a host of extras including electric windows and mirrors, a sliding side door and automatic headlights among other things. Three turbocharged engines are offered: a 1.5 TDCi diesel (74bhp), a 1.6-litre TDCi diesel (94bhp) and a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol. All are available with stop-start and depending on your choice van payloads range between 645 and 660kg. The petrol unit is only expected to account for 5% of sales in the UK.
Low running costs should be the cornerstone of any commercial vehicle and that’s twice as important at the smaller end of the LCV segment. The Transit Courier doesn’t disappoint on this score, with 76.3mpg and 97g/ km in its most economical guise. To get that sub-100g/km CO2 emissions rating, buyers need to specify the 1.6-litre TDCi diesel with stop-start and a 62mph fixed speed limiter. It means the van becomes even more of a specialist at short-trip urban work but even without the speed cap and stopstart that engine can manage 70.6mpg with 105g/km emissions.
Go for the 1.5-litre TDCi and combined cycle returns are 68.9mpg or 72.4mpg with stopstart while even the entry-level 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol can manage 54.3mpg and 119g/ • Best small vans to buy now km with stop-start fitted. the 1.6-litre engine has 94bhp and 215Nm through a slightly wider rev range of 1,750 to 2,500rpm. We tested the Dagenham-built 1.6-litre TDCi unit and it proved more than capable of shifting a Transit Courier with 150kg of payload on board with some vigour. Refinement is generally good, with the noise levels in the cab only becoming intrusive as the engine homes in on the top of its rev range, and the units flexibility made the Courier feel light on its feet around town. The other engine option is the 1.0-litre EcoBoost, a powerplant we’ve been thoroughly impressed with in Ford’s passenger cars. It’s the cheapest of the Courier’s three engines at around £400 under the 1.5 TDCi and, with 99bhp plus a charismatic off-beat three-cylinder thrum, it’s the most enjoyable to drive. That counts for little in the LCV space, however, and unless you’re sticking solely to urban centres, the fuel economy penalty of petrol power will be too big to overcome. On our test the performance and superior refinement of the EcoBoost unit impressed but the diesel model felt slightly more planted on the road, possibly as a result of the extra weight in the nose. Ford has managed to transpose the supple ride and handling fluency we’ve come to expect from its passenger cars onto the Transit Courier and the result is an excellent driver’s van. It corners with impressive stability, steers precisely and rides smoothly. The 5-speed manual gearbox is also great to use but Ford isn’t offering an automatic option.

These are in every vehicle and are used in conjunction with real time reporting which is made available to the customer. The use of Online PODs within the organisation provides a quick method of transferring documents to and from customers. Online PODs also cut the amount of paper used, dramatically minimising waste and reducing costs along with benefiting the local and global environment. The recent fall in oil prices will filter through into consumer confidence and they are optimistic about demand in the next six months and beyond.
The current driver shortage means that the industry will be stretched to maximum capacity and this lack of supply will ultimately have an upward effect on haulage rates. The cost of fuel is a critical component of KMS business model and has grown like a cancer to represent as much as one third of their cost base. This is an unbalanced situation that can never be good for business, however the recent downwards move in prices is a much needed step in the right direction. At Ken Mallinson Transport the pride their selves on being a Green Fleet, 95% of their vehicles are Euro5 whilst the remaining 5% are Euro6 which all produce Low Emissions. Furthermore they can generate weekly reports showing their Carbon Footprint has vastly reduced with these vehicles. Decarbonising the transport sector is a key priority of the EU Transport
policy along with studies have shown that Aerodynamic drag is responsible for up to 40% of HGV fuel consumption at motorway speeds. Therefore that is why here at Ken Mallinson Transport all their vehicles are fitted with the latest air kits to cut down on fuel drag and carbon emissions. As part of their commitment to environmental issues they are currently carrying out studies in fuel efficiency by enforcing speed restrictions on the vehicles as well as their latest additions to the fleet being fitted with auto engine switch off technology, both of which makes their fleet as economic as possible. The Company’s active expansion plan will see the fleet grow to 100 vehicles by 2015 and considering they started with just three vehicles to become what we are today is a proud achievement for any.

Put off by the early starts and long hours involved in the transport industry, the previous owner had decided that it wasn’t for him and had ceased trading.
As the Company progressed, the need for larger vehicles became ever more important. Jon took his HGV test and acquired his first proper truck. In those days the company was based on Stennetts property at Ingham, just north of Bury St Edmunds. It was around this time that Cross Country Carriers began their long standing relationship with Sultans Turkish Delight, who were based in Norwich at the time. Both companies have evolved tremendously since those days. Sultans remain a key customer of Cross Country Carriers and are their longest trading partnership.
The early days saw Jon travelling the length and the breadth of the UK. Van Melle confectionery was an important customer at that time and their business helped set Jon on the way.
In 1991 a fire at the property at Stennetts, necessitated a relocation of the business and it was then that the company moved to its current site at Saxham. In 1981,
the company purchased its first brand new Lorry when it acquired a 16 tonne Volvo curtainsider. In the mid-nineties, a one-off job for Basic Ingredients of Rougham led to an introduction to Freeworld Trading of Edinburgh who remains a significant customer to this day. The business continued to grow and soon it became obvious that the emerging pallet networks were changing the shape of haulage in the UK. It was now possible for businesses to move pallets from one end of the country to the other at much reduced rates and with guaranteed delivery times. Jon knew that in order to keep pace with the competition, the company needed to join a network and so in
1998, the decision was taken to join Pallex who were looking to establish a depot to cover the IP postal district. In seems inconceivable now, but in those days’ deliveries and collections for the whole area were undertaken with just two 18 tonne trucks. The general haulage side of the business remained a key element, offering customers an alternative method of delivery for full loads or particularly fragile freight. In its early days, the company specialised in the transportation of foodstuffs, however in recent years the variety of goods carried has widened to include many non-food items although the company does not carry anything that is hazardous by road. After a short period of time away from the business, Jon returned in 2007. The company had continued to grow in his absence. In early 2009 Cross Country was approached by Palletways who were looking to increase their coverage in East Anglia. It quickly became clear that the

service and network coverage was far superior, so the decision to switch networks was a straightforward one and at that point Cross Country became Palletway’s depot 177. Over the past 5 years the growth of the business has continued. The general haulage fleet has now expanded to include 16 tractor units, seven of which are allocated to dedicated contracts, while the other four are available to customers for full loads or group age deliveries. These are complimented by 2 rigid trucks. The Palletways fleet has also extended and after initially providing the service to the IP post codes, Cross Country was approached to extend their area to include collection and delivery to the eastern CB post codes. The whole area is served by a fleet of 14 rigid trucks, all with tail-lifts and backed up by a night-time trunking service, with 5 double deck trailers travelling to the central hub at Lichfield and a further double deck trailer travelling to the London hub at Greenford.

Last year has seen the fleet increase with the delivery of two brand new Lawrence David trailers, in special livery to mark the 35th anniversary of the company. One trailer has been fitted with a taillift to increase flexibility of the general haulage fleet still further. The past 5 years have seen Cross Country change beyond all recognition, as the fleet has increased so has the infrastructure here at Saxham, with new offices and undercover loading & unloading facilities. Five years ago the company established its first contracted services with the supply of dedicated trucks to Howarth Timber Engineering. The contracts department has grown with five vehicles and trailers being supplied daily to Delamode for deliveries on behalf of Caps Cases in Newmarket. Despite these increases, the company values remain the same: the desire to provide a smart, friendly and professional service
ROAD HAULAGE: CROSS COUNTRY CARRIERS to businesses throughout the UK. At the moment Cross Country Carriers has a large fleet consisting of 30 HGV’s, 20 trailer and 2 vans and the company has currently applied for an increase in its operator’s licence for a further 10 vehicles. All the HGV vehicles apart from two 7.5t trucks are DAF’s, the 7.5 tonners are Mitsubishi’s chosen for their payload and the two vans are both Mercedes. The company have always invested heavily in technology, for the past 10 years their relationship with Mandata has seen a wide variety of I.T. systems incorporated, all the company vehicles are tracked and recently a full telematic system has also been incorporated to help monitor driver behaviour and manage fuel performance. They also take every step to reduce the impact of their business on the environment. Ecological issues are given full consideration when purchasing new equipment and the company fleet is based entirely around modern eco-friendly vehicles.
Since 2008 down to the economic downturn the company has faced very difficult trading conditions however, rather than panic and join in the cost cutting exercise of several of its competitors, the company stuck to its principles of selling on service, rather than price and this has been shown to be the correct approach as in the subsequent period the company has continued to grow. Fuel costs remain a challenge for all hauliers, whilst technology and driver training can be used to combat a certain amount of the effects of rising prices there is a limit to what can be achieved. The recent stability in the fuel price has been of benefit to all but there remains a strong feeling in the industry that when the price of oil drops the fuel cost doesn’t drop as quickly or as far, however when the reverse happens the price rises very quickly. Cross Country Carriers celebrated their 35th anniversary last year in 2013. They have won Platinum status from Palletways for 2014 which is the
third time in the past 4 years that the company has won this award, which is for excellence in service within the network. To qualify, the company has to meet stiff targets across a range of KPI’s over a protracted period. The current application for an extension to their operator’s license is to meet the ever increasing demand for Cross Country Carriers services. The company expects to see the continued growth of its Palletways operation and on the general haulage side of the business it fully expects its contracts division to continue its recent growth.
