LYONS – On Tuesday, July 27 at 7 p.m. the Lyons Community Library will welcome naturalist Martin Ogle for a presentation that will inspire and delight with stories, scientific insights, and the wisdom contained in his book, In the Eye of the Hawk: Reflections on the Cycles of Life. This program will practically and metaphorically reflect on our human relationship to life. Register on our website or via the link in our monthly email newsletter.
The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program will draw to an official close on July 31, which means there’s still time to log activities and reading in the Beanstack app before prize drawings take place. Tickets for prize drawings can be earned by reading books, completing activities, attending programs, writing book reviews, and more. Completion prizes include a free book for those under 18 and a $5 gift card to a local business for adults. Grand prizes for youth include magazine subscriptions, board games, STEM kits, puppets, a ukulele, and a local gift card.
We’ve loved having our young patrons back in the library for Baby/Lapsit Storytimes on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and All-Ages Storytime (+ Craft) on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. The current session of storytimes run until August 4 at which point we’ll take a two-week break. Storytimes will resume on August 24.
There’s still time to register for the popular Henna for Teens on Thursday, July 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. Our friends from Face Fiesta will cover henna basics, including science, safety, and history, combined with design tips and instructions for creating pop culture-inspired designs –everything from Studio Ghibli, to narwhals, and unicats! This class will involve fun, hands-on drawing for whatever you happen to be a superfan of. Supplies provided, please register via our website or by calling the library.
On August 11 at 6:30 p.m., the Busy Readers Book Club will meet in the library’s Community Room to discuss Wallace Stegner’s Angle of Repose. Considered an American masterpiece and iconic novel of the West, Angle of Repose tells the story of Lyman Ward, wheelchair-bound retired professor, who returns to his ancestral home in the Sierra Nevada of California. Ward embarks on a search of monumental proportions to rediscover his grandmother who made her own journey to their valley nearly a hundred years earlier. Like many great quests in literature, Ward’s investigation leads him deep into the dark shadows of his own life. Pick up a copy from the library today. We’re happy to introduce our new, circulating STEM kits. We have various kits aimed at those in pre-K to grade two, grades three to five, and grades six to eight. Kits include Coding with Makey Makey Go, Coding with Micro:Bit, Architecture with Keva Planks, Electricity with Snap Circuits and Electricity with Squishy Circuits. What’s Squishy Circuits?
