Letting community feedback run its course Elite Women spring into action at Mission Bay during the International Triathlon Union and U.S. Olympics qualifier event May 10-12. The triathlon, which closed main Photos by Paul Hansen I Beach & Bay Press thoroughfares in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, was largely praised by residents and community officials for its organization.

T
he International Triathlon Union (ITU) received mostly positive feedback from the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach communities after the ITU held the U.S. Olympic team trials in San Diego for the first time. The ITU event required road closures throughout the beach area between May 10-12, and featured 2,100 participants and as many as 10,000 spectators. Franziska Petermann and other representatives from the ITU San Diego office attended the monthly Pacific Beach Community Advisory Board and Pacific Beach Town Council meetings on consecutive evenings last week to field comments or questions from the community. Discover Pacific Beach Director Sara Berns said her office fielded no negative feedback from the community. Pacific Beach resident Cathie Jolley, who lives
near one of the road closures, said she had plenty of time to coordinate her schedule because the ITU publicized the event at least two weeks beforehand. Marcie Beckett said the ITU organizers did a “great job,” but she suggested additional signage to give alternate routes for anyone who was unaware of the event. Eve Anderson said the only complaints she heard were secondhand from post office, cable, satellite and transit employees who said they had difficulty navigating around the road closures. Another Pacific Beach resident asked the ITU representatives about the economic impact on the beach area, to which ITU representatives responded that it is too early to determine. There is a possibility the ITU will hold future events in Pacific Beach/Mission Beach. “We would like to come back but we have to wait for the city to evaluate if the event returns,” Petermann said. PB teacher, students tackle art of ancient Egyptians’ mummification BY MARSHA KAY SEFF | BEACH & BAY PRESS King Tut had nothing on this chicken. Just ask one of the students in Amy Civin’s sixth-grade history class at San Diego Jewish Academy in Carmel Valley. King Kluck, the chicken-cum-royalty, was the focus of the class’ recent study of ancient Egypt and the mummification of pharaohs and kings.
Woman’s fate in balance after setting self ablaze Questions abound after a woman believed to be in her 30s inexplicably and intentionally set herself afire at Mariner’s Point on May 19. The woman, who authorities have declined to identify, is in critical condition with third-degree burns over half her body, according to investigators. Police said the incident unfolded about 6:45 p.m. when the woman doused herself with a flammable liquid and asked someone for a lighter. Refused the request, the woman — possibly a homeless woman — approached a barbecue grill and lit her arm on fire after grabbing a hot coal, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital and the case remains under investigation, police said. Her condition has not been released.

A former assistant coach at Mission Bay High School is awaiting a preliminary hearing on July 16 on charges of selling and transporting methamphetamine. Danny Ray Pamaran, 46, pleaded not guilty to the charges during a May 14 arraignment and was allowed to remain free on $20,000 bond. Pamaran was arrested May 7 by San Diego police in Pacific Beach. The eight charges allege he sold, furnished, transported and possessed methamphetamine for sale on May 1 and May 7. Pamaran worked as an assistant baseball coach but he did not teach classes at Mission Bay High. He was reportedly discharged from his duties by school officials following his arrest. The District Attorney’s Office filed four separate charges for each of the two incidents in which Pamaran allegedly possessed meth for sale. Further details were not available. — Neal Putnam

Mayoral candidates weigh in on 2012 issues Candidate: BONNIE DUMANIS (District Attorney) Should San Diego’s mayor and City Council take a more aggressive oversight role with respect to the city’s schools and the San Diego Unified School District? Why or why not? DUMANIS: Yes. I have proposed a bold new “Framework for America’s Finest City Schools” that reforms the school board, in- BONNIE DUMANIS creases transparency, involves parents, and protects taxpayers. The plan consists of eight critical points, including an independent finan-
cial advisory board; steadfast opposition to new taxes; greater transparency in district management; and more parental involvement. The future of our schools is threatened by the possibility of financial insolvency, a lack of stability in top management positions, and a structure that puts too much distance between parents and decisionmakers. Just as other leading cities in the U.S. have done, mayoral leadership is required to provide a vision for firstclass schools in San Diego, transforming my vision into reality.
Do you support or oppose the movement for pension reform in San Diego city govSEE DUMANIS, Page 6
Candidate: CARL DeMAIO (City Councilman) What is the single-greatest challenge or obstacle facing San Diego’s beach communities and what would you do as mayor to meet this challenge or obstacle? DeMAIO: The single-greatest challenge facing all of our communities are the fiscal problems at City Hall — driven by runaway pension costs. For our beach communities, we have seen the fiscal crisis result in service cuts, reduction in police and fire coverage, threats to our fire pits, and streets and boardwalks that are falling apart. I’m not waiting to be mayor to fix this problem, which is why I authored Proposition B that fully reforms the city’s pension system and I expect will be overwhelmingly approved by San Diego voters on June 5. We need to
address the pension and fiscal issues facing our city and restore the services that our citizens in the beach communities want and deserve.
Should San Diego’s mayor and City Council take a more aggressive oversight role with respect to the city’s schools and the San Diego Unified School District? Why CARL DEMAIO or why not? DeMAIO: Education is a personal issue for me. Eduction saved my life when I was orphaned and the Jesuits took me in and gave me an education.
My education reform plan focuses on three key steps. First, lead by example by implementing fiscal reform at City Hall, then helping each school model their reforms after our success. This will allow us to move money from overhead and administration into the classroom where it belongs. Second, we must restore after-school programs that have been cut in the last decade by the City. My plan calls for major restorations in library and park and recreation programs for our kids. Finally, I will be a regional leader on the need for accountability and competition in each school district, by moving to “pay-for-performance” systems for teachers and allowing parents more SEE DeMAIO, Page 6
Former District 2 City Councilman Michael Zucchet has resigned from serving on the Oversight Board he was appointed to in April, explaining in a letter to the city his frustrations that the municipal panel was unable to get any legal representation. The resignation became public May 16 when the City Clerk’s Office posted a legal notice at City Hall announcing the panel now has an “unscheduled vacancy” in light of Zucchet’s resignation. The Oversight Board serves as the successor agency to the defunct Redevelopment Agency, which was dissolved by the governor and state legislature Feb. 1 to help close the state budget gap. Zucchet and six others were appointed by the City Council in April. His letter of resignation was also

made public and he described the process the board will likely follow to be “fatally flawed and a lost cause.” Zucchet noted how City Attorney Jan Goldsmith repeatedly told the panel he could not represent them. Zucchet also said other law firms declined to defend the board against lawsuits, citing legal conflicts because of other clients. He wrote that one law firm without conflicts declined to represent them at all. All board members volunteer their services without pay. Zucchet said this means the Oversight Board “faces additional weeks, if not months, of meetings, deliberations and decision-making votes on the most convoluted and complicated issues without any legal guidance whatsoever.” In 2005, Zucchet was convicted of SEE ZUCCHET, Page 6

I The San Diego Community Newspaper group presents pre-election coverage of the city mayoral race on Tuesday, June 5. A five-question format was developed and submitted to each of the four major candidates. The campaigns of U.S. Congressman Bob Filner and state Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher did not respond. Visit us at www.sdnews.com for more election updates and coverage.
What is the single-greatest challenge or obstacle facing San Diego’s beach communities and what would you do as mayor to meet this challenge or obstacle? DUMANIS: Our beaches are San Diego’s natural treasures and the single-biggest obstacle for beach communities is the city’s overall financial condition. We currently don’t have the money to make real progress on sewer upgrades, for instance. Sewer spills can be devastating in our beach communities, causing environmental, health and economic problems for those communities. As mayor, I would reform pensions and review our expenditures from top to bottom to get the most out of our tax dollars.

The students cleaned it and removed the organs, mixed natron to dry it, stuffed it and dried it again weekly, coating it with cinnamon and baking soda and then re-stuffing it once again. Through the process, they decided, the chicken smelled like “a wet dog” or “Dad’s gym socks.” For the burial, the kids crafted a sarcophagus, which they filled with Mardi Gras necklaces and buttons and other little trinkets they found around their homes. ernment? Why or why not? DUMANIS: I do support comprehensive pension reform. San Diego’s pensions have grown to the point where we simply can’t afford the system we have. Our long term financial stability as a city depends on tackling this difficult problem. I believe we can still offer pensions the taxpayers can afford and that provide the type of financial stability that is important to retirees. As mayor, if pension reform is approved by the voters, I will work to implement a 401(K)-type plan that has an annuity option, so that every employee has the opportunity to have a secure retirement, especially those who risk their lives as firefighters. If it does not pass, I will still make pension reform a clear priority, including a freeze of San Diego City employees’ pensionable pay for five years. The important thing is that we
viduals, organizations, unions) and why does this support matter for your campaign message? DeMAIO: I am proud to have received the support from a diverse group of organizations that focus on protecting taxpayers and small businesses including the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and the California Small Business Action Committee. Most importantly, I have received the endorsement from over 10,000 San Diegans who are ready for reform in San Diego.
I stood with taxpayers in 2004 when I helped uncover the city’s fiscal crisis that the special interests wanted to keep quiet. I led the opposition to Prop D, the highest tax increase in the history of San Diego. I stood with taxpayers to author and qualify Proposition B, the pension reform ballot measure to the June ballot. I am the only candidate with a record of saving taxpayers over $155 million in reforms since taking office in 2008. Candidate’s statement (in their own I am the only candidate that has a words): record of standing with the taxpayers DeMAIO: San Diegans should make instead of the downtown insiders and their decision based on a candidate’s government employee unions — and record of results, not campaign slo- getting results! gans. have a mayor who has the proven ability to bring all sides to the table to get real pension reform, with real savings that’s really going to stick. I have that ability.
What endorsements do you hold (individuals, organizations, unions) and why does this support matter for your campaign message? DUMANIS: I have a broad cross-section of endorsements from every corner of San Diego, including former Congresswoman Lynn Schenk, a Democrat, to Mayor Jerry Sanders and Council President Pro Tem Kevin Faulconer, Republicans. I am endorsed by every member of the County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Bill Gore and a dozen law enforcement organizations. I stated publicly that I would not seek the endorsement of any labor organization with employees at the city early in my campaign, since the mayor plays an important role in negotiating contracts with those organizations. When I ran
for judge, district attorney and now mayor, I ran on a platform of putting party politics aside and working with all groups for the good of our community. I believe that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.
Candidate’s statement (in their own words): DUMANIS: My career as a clerk typist, judge and now district attorney has allowed me to work with hundreds of organizations and on behalf of thousands of San Diegans. I make tough decisions every day in the District Attorney’s Office and I’ll do the same as mayor. Holding people accountable, changing the culture at City Hall and bringing greater transparency. We need a mayor whose resume includes proven leadership skills in a large government organization, the ability to work with all the people of San Diego, and the perspective that comes from more than 30 years of service to San Diego.

federal corruption charges by a jury and resigned from the City Council, but the trial judge overturned the convictions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office decided years later not to seek a second trial for Zucchet, who now represents the Municipal Employees Association. He noted in the letter that “perhaps my life experiences have made me too cynical or paranoid,” but he didn’t feel comfortable serving on a board that has no legal representation. Zucchet wrote he didn’t feel he should put himself and his family “on the line” with the potential risk of incurring legal costs. He wrote that he volunteered because he wanted to return to public service, but that was before he realized the board’s work involved “endless uncertainty, unintended consequences, impossible deadlines, and conflicting fiduciary duties” without legal assistance.

VAVi Sport & Social Club gears up for new sports season beginning June 2
MBHS wraps up spring sports; no CIF berths
With summer just around the corner, VAVi Sport & Social Club is geared up and ready for action, with beach community adult sports leagues starting as early as Saturday, June 2. The Pacific Beach Recreation Center, Mission Beach’s Wavehouse, Mission Bay and area elementary schools will become host to an array of sports and fitness leagues for the summer-

time, including flag football, coed dodgeball, outdoor soccer, beach boot camp, inner tube water polo and golf. Although the VAVi experience typically brings to mind individuals bolstering fitness levels or companies building team camaraderie through sport, VAVi also emphasizes the social aspect beyond the sport with postgame happy hours at local venues,
ensuring that all participants — whether they won or lost — have fun even after the game is over. VAVi offers more than 30 different adult coed sports leagues, fitness and dance classes throughout San Diego. MBHS BASEBALL Mission Bay High lost its final regular-season game against Clairemont 5-4 on May 17 and will not be advancing in CIF playoff action this year. The Buccaneers dropped their final five games and ended the regular season on low note at 4-8, putting them in fifth place in the Western League and notching a 12-16 overall record. Rick Frink completed his first regular season as Mission Bay’s head varsity coach after he replaced the Greg Farrar before the start of the season. “We lost some tough games this year,” said Frink. “Most of our games were by one or two runs.” The Bucs won four games by one run, but ended up losing five one-run games, which included the final three contests against Madison (losing 3-4 and 1-2) and Clairemont (4-5). Even still, Frink said he was satisfied with the performance of the pitching staff this year. “Our strength was the pitching staff, because seniors Leslie Caibling, Alejandro Zavala and Sam Elgoual stabilized the staff,” he said. Caibling, who was named to the First Team All-Western League, posted a 1.47 earned-run average (ERA) and recorded 52 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched. Elgoual (2.28 ERA in 34 innings) and Zavala (1.86 ERA in 68 innings, opponents batted .240 against him) also had solid performances on the mound this year earning them Second Team All-Western League honors. In addition to their pitching, the standout senior trio of Caibling, Elgoual and Zavala led the team on offense. Elgoual batted .419 with 34 hits and 18 runs batted in (RBI). Caibling was also dangerous at the plate, hitting .388 with 33 hits and 24 RBI. Zavala led the team in stolen bases with seven-of-seven attempts. Despite the sub-par season, Frink said he was encouraged by another trio of underclassmen: juniors Connor Vaughs (.268), Jesse Sullivan (.286) and Luis Osuna (.316), and said he expects all three will be counted on to lead the Buccaneers next year. SOFTBALL Mission Bay softball ended its season on May 16 with a 5-0 loss to Del Norte in

the first round of the CIF playoffs. Head Coach Jimmy Ross’ Bucs’ finished 2012 with a 3-9 league record and 8-15 overall. The Bucs performed inconsistently during the year, and when they were good, they won impressively. When they were bad, they lost decisively. Mission Bay scored 10 runs or more in five of their eight wins but gave up 10 runs or more in nine of their 15 defeats, which included a 21-1 drubbing at the hands of Madison in the regular-season finale. They were able to shut out their opponents in three of their eight wins but were also shut out by their opponents in seven of their 15 defeats. Senior Whitney Winchester led the Buccaneers in batting with a .353 average while sophomore Mice’la Ross led the squad in RBI with 14. Ross also led the team with a 2.25 ERA, which was impressive considering Mission Bay was outscored 172-94 on the season. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL Mission Bay boys’ volleyball had a rough 2012 as they opened the year with 12 consecutive losses. The high point of the season was a road victory over the Point Loma Pointers, three games to one. Bucs volleyball finished with a 1-10 league record and 1-13 overall.

Elvis tribute, all-star jazz and moody, atmospheric piano
LIVEMUSIC BY BART MENDOZA | BEACH & BAY PRESS Elvis Presley may have left the building in 1976, but with so many performers onstage around the world recreating his look and music, Elvis has never really been out of the public eye. James Kruk, one of the better impersonators, performs at Brick by Brick on May 25 as part of an improbable bill that also includes a Jimi Hendrix tribute band. Kruk takes on the persona of mid-1970s Las Vegas-era Elvis and does a great job. Anyone can wear the costumes, but Kruk’s voice is a good match for Presley’s. While he has the mannerisms down so pat, it almost doesn’t seem like an act. If you’re a fan at all of the king of rock ’n’ roll, you’ll love every second of this set • “Elite Elvis Presley Tribute,” featuring James Kruk: 8 p.m. Friday, May 25 at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 21 and up. $10. www.brickbybrick.com The month’s hottest jazz event takes place May 27 at Tango Del Rey, when acclaimed trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos presents an all-star tribute of “San Diego Jazz Legends.” On hand will be saxophonists Daniel Jackson and Gary LeFebvre, bassist Marshall Hawkins, guitarist Mundell Lowe and drummer Carlos Vasquez, with Graham Dechter on guitar. The term “legend” is overused these days, but it truly applies to this event, with some of the greatest players to ever call San Diego home taking the stage. If you are even remotely interested in jazz, this concert has to be one of the month’s priorities. • “San Diego Jazz Legends:” 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 27 at Tango Del Rey, 3567 Del Rey St. $20. All ages. www.tangodelrey.com Reggae rockers 3 TonE host a CDrelease show at the 710 Beach Club on June 2. The Spring Valley-based trio captures the sound of the beach perfectly in tunes like “Bikini Girl” and “Blackout.” There seems to be an endless crop of such groups hitting the waterfront each month. MUSTHEAR There is only one original member left in the ska band The Untouchables. But in this case, that’s enough. The key to a successful 30-plus-year run will be clearly evident during the band’s show at The Griffin on Friday, May 25. They’re a great live band. truly is a cut above, featuring fluid lead guitar work and songs with a humorous story line. Fans of groups like Sublime will find much to appreciate in 3 ToneE. • 3 TonE performs at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 21 and up. www.710bc.com Seattle-based indie band Barcelona appears at The Griffin on May 29. The trio performs moody, atmospheric piano-based songs, largely in ballad mode, a la Coldplay. As unlikely as it sounds, the band was recently signed to Universal’s Motown label, but Barcelona’s music is the perfect soundtrack fodder for films. Indeed, the group’s song “Please Don’t Go” was used in a trailer for the film “Water for Elephants.” Though much of the music is down tempo, barely raising its energy level past “mild,” anyone who enjoys songs with an intense,
original frontman Jerry Herman is still center stage, keeping rein over the group’s up-tempo tunes. Expect the biggest cheers for hits like “Free Yourself,” but they have plenty of worthy newer tunes. The Clone Ponies fill the void, playing everything from “Different Drum” to “You’re No Good.” Most of Ronstadt’s top 40 tunes were covers of other artists from Chuck Berry to Elvis Costello, making this show much more varied than one might expect while still full of nothing but crowd pleasers. • The Clone Ponies perform at 9 p.m. on Saturday June 2. WWW.CUTTINGEDGEK9.COM CUTTING EDGE K9 REHAB Has Been Featured On Local & National News, Radio, A Number Of Local Papers & Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a many reasons. Our rehab services offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Nonweight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function & quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain & inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion & cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temperature • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
